Empowering Research Topic Development With Generative Ai Prompts - A Pilot Study For First-Year Writing Students, Yanling Liu, Yan He

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

As generative AI tools like ChatGPT become increasingly embedded in academic and everyday contexts, educators have a timely opportunity to leverage these technologies to support foundational research skills. In general education writing courses, students participate in library sessions with librarians to support their research projects. A central challenge is formulating a focused and relevant research topic, as many struggle to identify and develop ideas and refine them into viable research topics that are suitable for college-level writing and align with assignment requirements. This study explores how generative AI tools - specifically ChatGPT - can be integrated into library instruction to …

One Step Forward, Three Steps Back: Picturing Working Men And Women In New Deal Government-Sponsored Art, Gabrielle Wills Feb 2026

One Step Forward, Three Steps Back: Picturing Working Men And Women In New Deal Government-Sponsored Art, Gabrielle Wills

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

The Depression era introduced both unprecedented and reoccurring anxieties that deeply affected average Americans. The question of how to respond aesthetically to major issues of economy, social instability, and an unsure future led artists to follow a canon of popular art that pointed to the idealized solidarity of an American people bonded by an imagined national community. Government-sponsored artists distilled ideals of national identity and unity in their depictions of working men and women, ignoring regional tensions and differences that had once divided the nation into disparate entities.

Best Served Cold: Operation Coldstore 1963 And The Reasons For The Singapore Government’S Decision, Jiansheng Zhang Feb 2026

Best Served Cold: Operation Coldstore 1963 And The Reasons For The Singapore Government’S Decision, Jiansheng Zhang

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

Operation Coldstore, launched in 1963 by Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew and resulting in the arrest of 113 Singaporean left-wing figures, cemented the People’s Action Party’s dominance in Singaporean politics—a position it holds to this day. Given its political and symbolic significance, Operation Coldstore remains one of the most hotly contested episodes in Singaporean historiography. Drawing on a wide range of primary sources, including declassified British documents, newspapers, and political memoirs, this essay evaluates competing interpretations and argues that the Singapore government’s principal motivation was to satisfy Tunku Abdul Rahman of Malaya and secure Singapore’s merger with Malaya. By emphasizing …

Imagined Nations: Ireland, Palestine, And The Politics Of Anti-Colonial Memory, Grace P. Wingerter

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

This paper covers the life and career of notable IRA operative Brendan “the Dark” Hughes and how his thoughts on the “Armed Struggle” or “Cause” changed over time. Brendan Hughes was forced to frequently deal with violent and heavy handed discrimination from Protestants, which led to him joining the Paramilitary movements as a result of frustration and misplaced youthful vigor. Brendan played a major role in the Troubles through his planning of prolific violent attacks such as the Four Square Laundry attack, Bloody Friday, and the H Block blanket protest and subsequent hunger strike in the Maze Prison. Brendan’s disconnect …

A Feminine Flame In The Midst Of Repression: The Concealed Role Of Women In The Isolated Siberian Tundra, Jenny N. Liang Feb 2026

A Feminine Flame In The Midst Of Repression: The Concealed Role Of Women In The Isolated Siberian Tundra, Jenny N. Liang

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

The modern Russian state is distinctive in her history of utilizing the isolated Siberian tundra for eliminating political dissent, with millions of dissidents disappearing into penal colonies, labor camps, and gulags, some never to reappear. Of the incomprehensible mass of numbers are the stories of steadfast wives refusing to abandon their husbands, women surviving the brutal political prison camps, and girls manipulated as political pawns into Siberia. In a historically patriarchal Slavic society, the stories of women have been conveniently pushed aside. The distinctive Russian practice of exiling political dissidents to the remote Siberian tundra has led to stories of …

Nude: A Transition To Subjectivity In Japanese Art And Beauty, Bomi Park Feb 2026

Nude: A Transition To Subjectivity In Japanese Art And Beauty, Bomi Park

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

This essay examines the tumultuous shift the Meiji Era of Japan encountered towards conventions of arts and the notion of ‘beauty,’ visually analyzed through the collisions in the depiction of nudes. Nudity identifies westernization and a new input in the Japanese arts system, becoming a hybrid of tradition and modern. Accompanied by the early influence pioneered through Kuroda Seiki and the creation of a lineage and teaching of yoga art—the appropriation of Western art practices. This essay highlights that this convention of beauty, wherever it comes from and taught by precursors, capturing and expressing an ambiguous concept of ‘beauty,’ can …

American Women's Clubs In The Nineteenth Century: The Case Of The Female Relief Society Of Nauvoo (1842-1844), Adithi Nythruva

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

Throughout the nineteenth century, women’s clubs provided American women with the space to influence the patriarchal-dominated public sphere and venture beyond their traditional domestic roles. This paper demonstrates that the Relief Society women developed a more nuanced relationship with feminist agency through their initiatives. Through an analysis of 33 sets of meeting notes from the society’s early years, this paper argues that the Relief Society women established feminist agency by exercising female authority, addressing scandals and injustices, and building a sisterhood. Additionally, through feminist agency, the Relief Society paralleled, and pre-dated the activities of many popular women’s clubs during the …

Balancing Play And Policy: Navigating Joyful Learning In A High-Stakes Third Grade Classroom, Ashley P. Osier, Andrew N. Sutton, Marcus T. Wilson, Johna A. Wright, Karyn A. Allee

Georgia Educational Research Association Conference

This qualitative case study explores how a third-grade teacher in a Southeastern US state integrates active, playful learning in a high-stakes accountability environment. Despite increasing political and curricular restrictions—including mandatory retention policies, banned books, and high-stakes standardized testing—this teacher designs and implements learning experiences that center student engagement, voice, and joy. Drawing on classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and instructional artifacts, the study investigates how she navigates formal and informal policies while maintaining developmentally appropriate and culturally responsive instruction.

Early findings suggest that playful pedagogies can not only coexist with accountability mandates but may also serve as a stabilizing force for …

Subjective Perspectives On Antarctic Wilderness: An Application Of Integral Ecology, Annabelle G. Mayes Jan 2026

Subjective Perspectives On Antarctic Wilderness: An Application Of Integral Ecology, Annabelle G. Mayes

Honors College Theses

Parties to the Antarctic Treaty have set Antarctica aside for peace, scientific research, and environmental protection. However, they have yet to take concrete actions to protect Antarctica’s wilderness values as agreed under the 1991 Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty. Meanwhile, pristine areas that are free from human interference are declining as human activity escalates. This study examines perceptions of Antarctic wilderness through the lens of integral ecology. Data from 1,640 people and 16 study populations were extracted from four published studies. Content analysis was conducted to determine how subjective perspectives differ across populations and geographic regions. All …

A Real-Time Mobile Robotic System For Crack Detection In Construction Using Two-Stage Deep Learning, Emmanuella Ogun, Yong Ann Voeurn, Doyun Lee

Civil Engineering & Construction: Faculty Publications

The deterioration of civil infrastructure poses a significant threat to public safety, yet conventional manual inspections remain subjective, labor-intensive, and constrained by accessibility. To address these challenges, this paper presents a real-time robotic inspection system that integrates deep learning perception and autonomous navigation. The proposed framework employs a two-stage neural network: a U-Net for initial segmentation followed by a Pix2Pix conditional generative adversarial network (GAN) that utilizes adversarial residual learning to refine boundary accuracy and suppress false positives. When deployed on an Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) equipped with an RGB-D camera and LiDAR, this framework enables simultaneous automated crack detection …
