Assessing The Effectiveness Of Reality-Based Focusing Events Across The Curriculum, Eloy Nunez, Ernest G. Vendrell, Nancy Ryan

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

A mythical Democratic-Republican National Convention (DRNC) was created as a focusing event which serves as the overarching theme for all newly redesigned courses in the graduate Criminal Justice Department at Saint Leo University. The study examines the effectiveness of focusing events in a graduate level curriculum. Students in the newly redesigned DRNC courses were surveyed. The results indicate that the overarching theme was perceived as being a valuable learning tool. The respondents indicated that the DRNC scenarios were highly realistic and would strengthen decision-making skills in their individual criminal justice careers. Behavioral Intervention Teams: A Campus Wide Collaboration, Douglas Bell

Campus behavioral intervention teams vary greatly from campus to campus, guided by their institution’s mission statement, ensuring a safe, educational environment for all members of the campus community. Assessments and interventions of distressed students and students exhibiting disturbing behavior provide a unique opportunity to collaborate with constituents of the campus community. This collaborative approach will assist in eliminating information silos and allow meaningful student interventions to take place.

Following the shooting at Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 2007, colleges began formally implementing threat assessment teams to help identify threats and prevent violence from occurring. On many campuses those teams have developed into Behavior Assessment Teams (BATs) that evaluate threats as well as support students by identifying concerning behavior and strategically implementing interventions to reduce the risk of violence. Many of those teams are now well established and need some method for evaluating their effectiveness.

Mass School Shootings: Predicting The Usage Of Firearms In Acts Of School Violence, Melanie A. Hart

Due to increased media attention and associated fear, school shootings have become a major concern for the public. Attempts to predict and prevent shootings have been developed by a variety of government agencies such as the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. A psychological profile, however, has yet to be established. This study uses demographic and behavioral characteristics of perpetrators and school characteristics to predict the likelihood of a perpetrator’s usage of firearms.
