Bone Artifacts At Mont Repose: Possible Motivationos For Production And Trade, James B. Harper Jun 2009

Bone Artifacts At Mont Repose: Possible Motivationos For Production And Trade, James B. Harper

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Material culture is a vital component of archaeology. The identification and designation of artifacts and their uses can assist in contextualizing historical sites. At Mont Repose, a rice plantation inhabited during colonial and antebellum times, a structure has been partially excavated. Included in a collection of bone artifacts unearthed from this site are bone buttons, bone toothbrushes, bone handfan parts, bone lice combs, and artifacts thought to be parts of a needle case or a Yoruba status item. These items display a high degree of manipulation and offer many interesting hypotheses regarding slave plantation life. The bone artifacts associated with …

Are Holding Patterns Predictive Of Infant Attachment Classification In 12 To 18 Month Old Infants?, Lauren Beam May 2009

Are Holding Patterns Predictive Of Infant Attachment Classification In 12 To 18 Month Old Infants?, Lauren Beam

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Research investigating infant attachment has demonstrated the benefits of infants' secure attachment to their mothers. While Ainsworth (1973) has determined four maternal behaviors, tender holding, stimulation, contingent responding and maternal sensitivity to infant signals, that promote a secure attachment in infants, are there other behaviors a mother could perform to promote a secure attachment in her infant? Whether infant attachment classification could be predicted from maternal holding patterns was investigated in the current study. Infant attachment classification was determined by infant behavior in Ainsworth's Strange Situation Procedure. Maternal holding patterns were comprised of eight holding behaviors. Results revealed that mothers …

Metacognition Moderates Math Anxiety And Affects Performance On A Math Task, Angela Marie Legg May 2009

Metacognition Moderates Math Anxiety And Affects Performance On A Math Task, Angela Marie Legg

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Math anxiety is a general fear or tension associated with thinking about or engaging in tasks requiring mathematical computations or interpretations. Past research paid little attention to the role of metacognition. It was expected that metacognition would moderate the effects of math anxiety such that performance, reaction time, and confidence would decrease as anxiety levels increased. Participants completed a math anxiety scale, a modular arithmetic task, and a state metacognition scale. Participants also provided information regarding their confidence in how well they answered each math question correctly as well as their estimation of their overall performance. As expected, metacognition moderated …

Chosen Ones: A Qualitative Inquiry Into The Collegiate Team Captain Experience, Jedidiah E. Blanton May 2009

Chosen Ones: A Qualitative Inquiry Into The Collegiate Team Captain Experience, Jedidiah E. Blanton

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The team captain is a highly recognizable position held in collegiate athletics. Loughead et al. (2006) suggests the team captain represents the formal peer leader in athletics. Although this may be the case, only one study was found which qualitatively investigated this position in male ice hockey (Dupois et al. 2006). Moran and Weiss (2005) highlighted differences in male versus female peer leadership in sport. A gap in the current sport psychology literature exists in the critical evaluation of both male and female, and team and individual peer sport leadership, from the first-person perspective. The purpose of this study was …

Troubling Women: Female Texts And Voices Of The Northern Irish Conflict, 1969-1998, Kelly M. Twilley May 2009

Troubling Women: Female Texts And Voices Of The Northern Irish Conflict, 1969-1998, Kelly M. Twilley

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This thesis explores the bloody conflict in Northern Ireland between the Irish nationalist community, those desiring a united Ireland, and the Ulster loyalist community, those longing to remain a part of the UK, known as the Troubles (1969-1998). More specifically, this thesis centers on the strong and courageous women who played undeniably significant roles throughout the conflict. Some women campaigned for better and equal rights for women, some protested for political justice, some picked up guns to fight, and still others advocated for peace. Using the real women of history as a guide, it will create a lens through which …

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between resilience and the academic achievement of at-risk students in the Upward Bound Program in Georgia. The researcher used a quantitative method to collect data for the study. The researcher used the Healthy Kids Survey (Module B) instrument to assess the resilience of participants; it had 33 items on it and the researcher added a demographic section to the survey to collect information about the participants' families, schools, GPAs, and SAT/ACT scores. All of the participants chosen for this study were at-risk students due to their status as low-income and …

Influence Of Pictures On Word Recognition, Audrey A. Hazamy May 2009

Influence Of Pictures On Word Recognition, Audrey A. Hazamy

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The picture superiority effect is a well-documented phenomenon that is defined as the superior memory of pictorial stimuli compared to word stimuli. The predominant explanation for this effect is that pictures are encoded more effectively than words, and are therefore able to be better remembered. Research has demonstrated the benefit that pictures provide for remembering words. However, little work has been to done to examine any negative and/or intrusion effects of pictures on memory for words. The current study further explored the picture superiority effect and facilitation effects of pictures on words as well as interference effects of pictures on …

America Inc.: The Rise And Fall Of A Civil Democracy, Keith W. Edmonds May 2009

America Inc.: The Rise And Fall Of A Civil Democracy, Keith W. Edmonds

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The field of Curriculum Studies has thoroughly outlined the detrimental effects of corporate ideology on education in terms of curricular mandates, the corporatization of higher education, rampant privatization, and globalization. Educational mandates have created an atmosphere of control in which students are methodically deprived of exploration and creativity through strict adherence to a prescribed curriculum. This results in the de-skilling of teachers and the loss of Self as students are forced to memorize facts based on educational mandates, with teachers having to constantly redirect outlets for creativity in order to teach to the test. As a result of this study, …

Mexican American Identities And Histories In Children’S Picture Storybooks: Thinking Critically, Thinking Diversely, Scott A. Beck

Middle Grades & Secondary Education: Faculty Publications

Each year increasing numbers of Mexican-heritage students are served by teachers with little knowledge of the history and diversity of the Mexican American community. This article introduces teachers to Mexican American history and diversity while taking a useful and critical look at children’s picture storybooks regarding Mexican-heritage peoples in the U.S. Ideas in the article regarding how to select, compare and contrast these picture books in the classroom will allow teachers to learn about their Mexican-heritage students, counter prejudices and stereotypes, and more effectively reach out to build academic and personal connections with these students.

Math Island At Brewer Elementary School: A Learner-Centered Model For Education, Vikki K. Collins, H. Marguerite Yates Apr 2009

Math Island At Brewer Elementary School: A Learner-Centered Model For Education, Vikki K. Collins, H. Marguerite Yates

Georgia Educational Researcher

This paper examines a learner-centered model for the teaching of elementary mathematics established at an urban Georgia school that serves a highly mobile, diverse population of approximately 475 students. The school was on its state’s list of schools needing improvement because students continued to perform poorly on standardized tests. Math Island, a support center for students designed to facilitate the conceptual understanding of mathematics, was created, and professional development programs were implemented to assist teachers in developing their pedagogical and content expertise in the teaching of mathematics. The school made substantial progress after these initiatives were employed and was removed …

The Impact Of Single-Sex Education On The Performance Of First And Second Grade Public School Students, Katherine Bradley Apr 2009

The Impact Of Single-Sex Education On The Performance Of First And Second Grade Public School Students, Katherine Bradley

Georgia Educational Researcher

In this article, I present the findings of a single-sex public education experiment adapted from a dissertation study. The rationale for conducting this research focuses on the renewed and unprecedented interest in single-sex public education as a strategy for increasing student performance. According to various educational theorists and researchers, single-sex education is an effective instructional strategy for improving student performance. However, little is known about the impact of single-sex public education. This quantitative ex post facto research analyzes the impact of single-sex education on academic achievement, discipline referral and attendance for public school first and second grade students. The findings …
