Collaborating With Faculty: Give Them What They Want Or Give Them What They Need?, Michele Santamaría Sep 2009

Collaborating With Faculty: Give Them What They Want Or Give Them What They Need?, Michele Santamaría

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Michele Santamaría, Delaware County Community Despite greater academic commitment to information literacy, professors frequently request content in an information literacy session without fully understanding the types of skills librarians are trying to teach. Should librarians use the customer service model and teach what professors want or should they teach the information literacy skills which they know students need? This paper will not argue for a simple solution to this question, but instead explore the underlying variables and assumptions influencing this dilemma. As such, this paper will address how both parties are operating under different pedagogical models, with librarians frequently prioritizing …

Learning Style And The Information Search Process, Mary Jane Rootes Sep 2009

Learning Style And The Information Search Process, Mary Jane Rootes

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Dr. Kuhlthau’s Information Search Process theory (ISP) asserts that there are six stages within the quest for information: initiation, selection, exploration, formulation and collection. A successful search for information will entail each of these stages. In each of these stages, a person experiences thoughts, feelings and actions unique to the stage. Kolb’s Learning Style Inventory asserts that those with different predominant learning styles will experience thoughts, feelings and perceptions differently. If this is correct, it would follow that students with different predominant learning styles will experience the thoughts, feelings and actions within each of these stages differently. It is the …

A Measure To Assess Student-Instructor Relationships, Gary Creasey, Pat Jarvis, Elyse Knapcik Jul 2009

A Measure To Assess Student-Instructor Relationships, Gary Creasey, Pat Jarvis, Elyse Knapcik

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

There is a need for an instrument that assesses student-instructor relationships as many experts speculate that close, non-threatening relationships between students and instructors predict positive achievement orientations, academic progress and success. In this paper, we present reliability and additional validity data concerning the Student-Instructor Relationship Scale, a 36-item inventory we developed that taps student-instructor relationship connectedness and anxiety. In the first study, college students completed this instrument twice over a 3-4 week time period and the instrument subscales possessed good test-retest reliability. In the second study, the subscales of the SIRS were associated with student perceptions of test anxiety in …

Towards Cultural Democracy In Teaching And Learning With Specific References To Pacific Island Nations (Pins), Konai Helu Thaman Jul 2009

Towards Cultural Democracy In Teaching And Learning With Specific References To Pacific Island Nations (Pins), Konai Helu Thaman

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This paper argues that the teaching/learning environments of most formal educational institutions in Pacific Islands Nations (PINs) are culturally undemocratic: that is, they do not take into consideration the way most Pacific people think, learn and communicate with one another. This is true not only of the values that underpin the curriculum but also the methods that most teachers use, and the way in which student learning is assessed and evaluated.

Transformative Education In The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning: An Analysis Of Sotl Literature, Lorraine S. Gilpin, Delores Liston Jul 2009

Transformative Education In The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning: An Analysis Of Sotl Literature, Lorraine S. Gilpin, Delores Liston

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) though in its youth, is perceived by many as transforming the academy. Will the transformation of the academy promised by SoTL be a mere shifting of priorities from research in the disciplines to research in pedagogy? Or will SoTL pursue transformation of the conception of teaching and learning whereby the commons influence our identities as knowers and actors engaged in scholarship for the purposes of transformation and growth on local and global scales? Our purpose is to explore whether the scholarship of teaching and learning, as represented in literature associated with SoTL, is …

Improvement In Writing And Reviewing Skills With Calibrated Peer Reviewtm, Adalet Baris Gunersel, Nancy Simpson

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This study analyzed results of an NSF-funded project that used Calibrated Peer Review (CPR)TM to promote writing and reviewing skills. The specific focus of the study was whether students at different levels of performance showed improvement in writing and reviewing competency with repeated use of CPR. The study paid specific attention to progress made by initially lower performing students. The courses of nine instructors with a total of 789 students were included. Repeated measures analyses indicated that across different science disciplines and student levels, students showed improvement in writing skills and reviewer competency with repeated use of CPR. In addition, …

Communities, Voices And Portals Of Engagement, Kathy Takayama Jul 2009

Communities, Voices And Portals Of Engagement, Kathy Takayama

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

What are the portals through which we uncover new perspectives, new approaches and new audiences for sharing our scholarship? The scholarship of teaching and learning creates opportunities for the emergence of new communities of practice across disciplines. Specific “portals of engagement” invite new partnerships for engagement, along with the emergence of “hybrid pedagogies” that evolve from Schulman’s (2005) signature pedagogies. How effective are these hybrids? What are the common elements that catalyze learning during the process of engagement? This essay explores these portals and their role in fostering scholarship across disciplinary and cultural pedagogies.

The Working Alliance In Teaching And Learning: Theoretical Clarity And Research Implications, Daniel T. Rogers Jul 2009

The Working Alliance In Teaching And Learning: Theoretical Clarity And Research Implications, Daniel T. Rogers

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The working alliance has proven to be a valuable concept in psychotherapy research, but its utility in understanding change processes in teaching and learning has yet to be realized. Despite previous applications of the concept to educational contexts, empirical research on the working alliance in student-teacher collaborations is lacking. To address this disconnect and encourage research, I present an overview of working alliance theory, clarify the application of the concept to educational contexts, and explore its relationship to the scholarship of teaching and learning. Potential applications of working alliance theory to teaching and learning research are considered as informed by …

What Drives Research-Focused University Academics To Want To Teach Effectively?: Examining Achievement, Self-Efficacy And Self-Esteem, Linda Evans, Maria Bertani Tress Jul 2009

What Drives Research-Focused University Academics To Want To Teach Effectively?: Examining Achievement, Self-Efficacy And Self-Esteem, Linda Evans, Maria Bertani Tress

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

What motivates research-focused academics, employed at a leading research university, to want to teach well – particularly considering that many of them admit to prioritising research above teaching? Why do they not simply settle for expending as little time as possible on their teaching planning and preparation, delivering run-of- the-mill, lack-lustre seminars and lectures that fail to inspire their students? These are the central questions addressed in this article, which revisits and re-analyses data from a 1993-4 case study of teaching and learning in a UK research-intensive university. Selected qualitative data from the original study are used to present an …

Clickers In Large Classes: From Student Perceptions Towards An Understanding Of Best Practices, Marc Patry Jul 2009

Clickers In Large Classes: From Student Perceptions Towards An Understanding Of Best Practices, Marc Patry

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Handheld wireless transponders, commonly referred to as ‘clickers’, are similar to standard household remote controls. The present study advances a dialogue in the literature about the specific ways in which clickers may be effectively used in the classroom. The present study was a survey of 516 students who were using clickers in a university course in 2006 or 2007. Student perceptions related to the use of clickers were more favorable in 2007 than in 2006. In addition, responses were more positive among introductory psychology students compared to other participants. Almost half (46%) of the responses to an open-ended question about …

Evaluating Gender Bias In Ratings Of University Instructors’ Teaching Effectiveness, Suzanne Young, Leslie Rush, Dale Shaw Jul 2009

Evaluating Gender Bias In Ratings Of University Instructors’ Teaching Effectiveness, Suzanne Young, Leslie Rush, Dale Shaw

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The purpose of this study was to examine the gender bias in student ratings of effective teaching. Students in five colleges were invited to rate instructors on three factors: interpersonal characteristics, pedagogical characteristics, and course content characteristics. We analyzed group differences based on student gender, instructor gender, and student level. Ratings of pedagogical characteristics and course content characteristics yielded significant interactions between student gender and instructor gender, but no differences were found among groups on interpersonal characteristics. We concluded that gender bias plays a role in students’ views of effective teaching in terms of how students evaluate pedagogical and content …

Service-Learning: A Venue For Enhancing Pre-Serviceeducators’ Knowledge Base For Teaching, Karen Meaney, Kent Griffin, Heidi Bohler Jul 2009

Service-Learning: A Venue For Enhancing Pre-Serviceeducators’ Knowledge Base For Teaching, Karen Meaney, Kent Griffin, Heidi Bohler

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Scholarship of Teaching and Learning research examining the impact of service-learning on student’s personal qualities has shown positive results. Findings indicate that students participating in high quality service-learning programs show increases in their perceptions of self-efficacy, civic responsibility, social justice, and diversity awareness. Less information regarding the effect of participation in service-learning on student’s intellectual and knowledge outcomes is known. This case study examined the influence of participation in a service-learning program on pre-service educators’ knowledge base for teaching. Participants included 31 undergraduate physical education majors enrolled in a Motor Skill Development for Children course at a large state university …

Perceptions Of Visual Culture In Turkish Pre-Service Art Teacher Preparation, Nur Balkir Jul 2009

Perceptions Of Visual Culture In Turkish Pre-Service Art Teacher Preparation, Nur Balkir

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

One of the key tasks of the university in the 21st century is to nurture visually literate students in the information age. Given that we live in a very highly visualized world, it is increasingly important that students are educated as critical viewers who are able to respond to visual images in an analytical and selective manner. The education of critical viewers starts with art teachers who appreciate and understand the embedded value of imagery within cultures, cultural differences, students’ knowledge and experience, critical thought, and reflection. The creation of progressive models in art teacher education that connect art and …

Book Review: Designing Coherent Science Education: Implications For Curriculum, Instruction, And Policy By Yael Kali, Marcia Linn & Jo Roseman, Editors (Teachers College Press, 2008), Andreina Parisi-Amon Jul 2009

Book Review: Designing Coherent Science Education: Implications For Curriculum, Instruction, And Policy By Yael Kali, Marcia Linn & Jo Roseman, Editors (Teachers College Press, 2008), Andreina Parisi-Amon

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Excerpt: The importance of science education is slowly gaining the support it deserves. President Obama stated that “science is more essential for our prosperity, our security, our health, our environment, and our quality of life than it has ever been” (Obama 2009). He recognized that “progress and prosperity of future generations will depend on what we do now to educate the next generation,” while announcing a renewed commitment to math and science education and challenging states to improve achievement in these areas. To create and sustain this improvement many areas need to be addressed. These include teaching science within …
