Entangled Relationships Illustrated Through Parasitic Plants, Colleen Beyer May 2011

Entangled Relationships Illustrated Through Parasitic Plants, Colleen Beyer

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This thesis paper examines the use of natural forms to metaphorically represent human bonds in my creation of the series of works for my MFA Thesis Exhibition based on interacting relationships between plants. My images focus on parasitic plants, as a metaphor for restrictive and binding aspects of human relationships. Several aspects of my work include psychological influences, my observations of the natural world, my artistic process and my major artistic influences. Chapter I focuses on the formation of my interest in psychology as it relates to entangled personal relationships and the translation of these ideas into my art. Attachment …

Change Does Not Wait, Kristina B. Hall May 2011

Change Does Not Wait, Kristina B. Hall

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The changes found in the growth patterns of trees, as they are impacted by their environment, can be seen as reflecting the journey that one progresses through over their own life. This thesis is the result of inner revelations that led the author to create a series of images that depict connections made between the movements found in trees that can be paralleled to the stresses in our own lives brought on by circumstance and experience. Correlations between human experience and nature are illuminated through the discussion of color usage, composition, historical art reference and development of personal artistic techniques.

Between Morality And Myth: A Parodic Visual Manifesto, Patricia J. Quilichini May 2011

Between Morality And Myth: A Parodic Visual Manifesto, Patricia J. Quilichini

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Acting on the belief that art communicates, that an image speaks all languages, these works were created as a visual manifesto responding satirically to the absurd way in which myths are elevated to the status of moral values. The photographic works created for this thesis challenge long held beliefs and emotions that associate sex with shame and guilt, and that grow out of the moral traditions we have inherited. Judeo-Christian traditions and religious beliefs have created widely unchallenged social/moral constructs, which regard sexuality and sexual awareness as sinful and woman as subservient to the moral authority constructed by men. I …

If I Could Have Opened My Heart, Alla Parsons

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This paper examines the paintings included in my MFA thesis exhibition. The body of work presented in my thesis show is figurative and imaginative. I place figures in an imaginary landscape or interior to explore my physical, psychological and spiritual self as well as my memories, family history and my Russian heritage. I discuss several aspects of my work in this thesis. In Chapter One I discuss the autobiographical origins of my artwork, its philosophical foundations, and the creative process I developed during my graduate studies. Chapter Two explores artistic influences on my work and historical context in which my …

An Examination Of The Association Between The Graduation Coach Program And Georgia's Graduation Rate, Wardell C. Hunter

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

As result of the dropout problem in the United States and in Georgia, many school systems around the nation have placed much emphasis on reducing the incidents of students dropping out of high school. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between the graduation coach program and Georgia's graduation rate of over a 7 year period of time, 2004-2010. The research sought to determine if differences existed between graduation rates pre the induction of the graduation coach programs and post the induction of the graduation coach program when controlling for variables such as, school locale, free and …

The Curriculum Of Capitalism: Schooled To Profit Or Schooled To Educate, Douglas O. Carroll May 2011

The Curriculum Of Capitalism: Schooled To Profit Or Schooled To Educate, Douglas O. Carroll

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Utilizing a critical pragmatist framework for analysis of the United States public school education, the research suggests the United States public education system perpetuates a curriculum of Capitalism linking with democracy; yet social Capitalism remains remarkably undemocratic as the experience of race, class, and gender contradict the curriculum of public schools. The consequence of these contradictions is perpetuation of racist or sexist stereotypes, a distinct class system delineated by financial, educational, and techno-wealth, a heightened if not profound sense that the American ideal is no longer within reach or a political sham. In sharp contrast to conservative theories of education …

Indicators Of Fatigue In Collegiate Women Tennis Players, Philip J. Prins May 2011

Indicators Of Fatigue In Collegiate Women Tennis Players, Philip J. Prins

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

To date very few research studies are available describing a detailed sports science profile of collegiate women tennis players, as many other existing studies only provide data on Junior tennis players or middle-aged subjects. The purpose of this investigation was to examine seasonal changes in training and competition on physiological and psychological measures in 13 NCAA Division I collegiate women tennis players (mean ± SD: age, 19.69 ± 1.32 years; height, 168.82 ± 4.59 cm; and weight, 64.75 ± 2.89 kg). All testing was conducted during the fall season. All subjects signed a University IRB approved informed consent form. Every …

The Effect Of Pettlep Imagery In A Pre Shot Routine On Full Swing Golf Shot Accuracy: A Single Subjects Design, Scott Swainston May 2011

The Effect Of Pettlep Imagery In A Pre Shot Routine On Full Swing Golf Shot Accuracy: A Single Subjects Design, Scott Swainston

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Context: Imagery has been shown to be an effective tool for enhancing performance in a variety of sports. Specifically, imagery has been found to be extremely effective within the sport of golf (e.g., Nicholls & Polman, 2005; Woolfork, Parish, & Murphy's, 1985). For example, Ploszay, Gentner, Skinner, and Wrisberg (2006) found imagery to improve putting performance. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect that a PETTLEP imagery intervention implemented into a pre shot routine had on a full swing golf shot. A single subjects design was used with three conditions: imagery before pre shot routine, imagery after …

Tomorrow’S Champions Of Sustainability: How Everyday Leaders Can Harness Grass Roots Momentum To Advance Adoption Of Ecologically Sound Practices In Sport And Event Management, Dorene Ciletti, John M. Lanasa, Diane P. Ramos, Richard E. Mathisen Apr 2011

Tomorrow’S Champions Of Sustainability: How Everyday Leaders Can Harness Grass Roots Momentum To Advance Adoption Of Ecologically Sound Practices In Sport And Event Management, Dorene Ciletti, John M. Lanasa, Diane P. Ramos, Richard E. Mathisen

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

For more than a decade, we have appealed to corporations to consider sustainability. Leading companies have enjoyed positive media attention, improved bottom line profits and enhanced competitiveness through environmental management and social initiatives. Sustainability in the broader sense has become everyone’s job, and the momentum crosses age groups and economic strata. This paper focuses on the event organizer as ordinary leader, inspiring an engaged, accessible audience toward sustainability, and offers rationale for promoting socially and environmentally responsible event management. With a captive audience, ordinary leaders have an opportunity to model socially and environmentally responsible practices through effective education, communication, metrics …

Value Of Professional Sport Teams In The Community: Reexamining The Measurement Properties Of The Community Impact Scale, Dae Hyun Kim, James J. Zhang, Yong Jae Ko Apr 2011

Value Of Professional Sport Teams In The Community: Reexamining The Measurement Properties Of The Community Impact Scale, Dae Hyun Kim, James J. Zhang, Yong Jae Ko

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

The Community Impact Scale was developed by Zhang et al. (1996) to measure essential value dimensions of professional sports in the community. The original scale includes 45 items under eight factors (Community Solidarity, Public Behavior, Social Equity, Pastime Ecstasy, Health Awareness, Individual Quality, Excellence Pursuit, and Business Opportunity). To further ensure its usefulness for theoretical and practical applications, this study re-examined measurement properties of the scale through conducting a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Research participants (N = 349) were residents of three major metropolitan areas, who responded to a survey in various community settings. With some modifications and eliminations of …

Self, Social, Team, And Situational Factors Influencing Televised Sports Viewership, Donghun Lee, James Zhang, Ketra L. Armstrong, Soon Ho Kim Apr 2011

Self, Social, Team, And Situational Factors Influencing Televised Sports Viewership, Donghun Lee, James Zhang, Ketra L. Armstrong, Soon Ho Kim

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

This study examined personal, social, and team motives associated with the consumption of televised sports (CTS) while taking into consideration market constraints variables. Research participants (N = 304) were university students who responded to a questionnaire that consisted of four segments: (a) watching televised sports, (b) motives for watching televised sports, (c) situational constraints, and (d) demographics. Semi-structured interviews as an ad hoc study were conducted with additional 22 frequent viewers of televised sports to ensure inclusion of all relevant factors affecting CTS. Multiple regression analyses revealed that self, team, and social motives were significant factors (p < .05) related to CTS. Two situational factors (weather and ticket availability) were found to have a significant (p < .01) impact on the CTS. Findings from the interviews further revealed that four conceptual themes affected CTS: individual-related factors, team-related factors, event-related factors, and media features.
