Impact Of Peer Evaluation Confidentiality On Student Marks, Christina Hamme Peterson, N.Andrew Peterson
Impact Of Peer Evaluation Confidentiality On Student Marks, Christina Hamme Peterson, N.Andrew Peterson
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Although group work is commonly used in university-level instruction, social loafing, domineering team members, poor attenders, and inequitable distribution of marks have been identified as obstacles to team-based learning. Peer evaluation has been proposed as one vehicle to address these issues. For use in grading, peer evaluations are often anonymous; however, as tools to address team functioning, they should not be conducted anonymously, but rather with the results discussed as feedback. It has been suggested, however, that non-confidential peer evaluations will artificially elevate students’ marks. In this study, we investigated the impact of peer evaluation confidentiality on students’ marks. Without …
Course-Embedded Mentoring For First-Year Students: Melding Academic Subject Support With Role Modeling, Psycho-Social Support, And Goal Setting - Ta, Jim Henry, Holly Bruland, Jennifer Sano-Franchini
Course-Embedded Mentoring For First-Year Students: Melding Academic Subject Support With Role Modeling, Psycho-Social Support, And Goal Setting - Ta, Jim Henry, Holly Bruland, Jennifer Sano-Franchini
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
This article examines a mentoring initiative that embedded advanced students in first-year composition courses to mentor students to excel to the best of their abilities. Mentors attended all classes along with students and conducted many out-of-class individual conferences, documenting each of them using program-implemented work logs. Four hundred four first-year students provided end-of-term anonymous feedback on standardized forms, which were transcribed, digitized, and tabulated for analysis. Analysis showed that the mentoring was effective in providing the four constructs key to mentoring as identified by Nora and Crisp (2008): psychological/emotional support; support for setting goals and choosing a career path; academic …

Surfacing The Structures Of Patriarchy: Teaching And Learning Threshold Concepts In Women's Studies*, Holly Hassel, Amy Reddinger, Jessica Van Slooten
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Patriarchy is a threshold concept in women’s studies—a significant, defining concept that transforms students’ understanding of the discipline. This article reviews our design, implementation, and findings of a lesson study crafted to teach women’s studies students the complex idea of patriarchy as a social system. We analyze the lesson using both quantitative and qualitative analysis, in keeping with the ideals of feminist pedagogy, suggesting a new model of SoTL research for the women’s studies field.
"Mentor Me To Mister" A Case Study Of Mentoring Through The Kappa Leadership And Developmental League, Christopher Eugene Johnson
"Mentor Me To Mister" A Case Study Of Mentoring Through The Kappa Leadership And Developmental League, Christopher Eugene Johnson
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore the non-academic strategies the Kappa Leadership and Developmental League uses to mentor African American males and the impact it has on their academic and social achievement. The researcher used a collective case study design to identify the best practices of the Kappa League. Purposeful sampling was used to identify and invite Kappa League mentees, parents, advisors/mentors and school administrators as participants in the investigation. Kappa League members, their mentors, school administrators, and parents alike perceived the Kappa Leadership and Development League as highly effective in providing both direction and support for African …
Institutional Difference: A Neglected Consideration In The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning?, Chrissie Boughey
Institutional Difference: A Neglected Consideration In The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning?, Chrissie Boughey
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Excerpt: This invited essay considers how thinking about institutional differences can enhance the scholarship of teaching and learning. It does this by drawing on a recent piece of South African research which used data produced as part of a national process of auditing institutions for quality assurance purposes (Boughey, 2009; Boughey 2010; Boughey & McKenna, 2011a; 2011b). Overwhelmingly, the research revealed that, although universities were paying attention to issues related to teaching and learning (and drawing on literature and research produced as part of the scholarship of teaching and learning to do so), little attention had been given to the …
Sex, Affect, And Academic Performance: It's Not What You Think, Rich Lewine
Sex, Affect, And Academic Performance: It's Not What You Think, Rich Lewine
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
The academic impact of serious depression among college students is beginning to receive increased attention in the research literature. In contrast, we know very little about the affect of mild depression, or dysphoria, on academic performance. This study examines the relationship of baseline dysphoria in 188 students to five measures of academic performance following baseline. Results suggest that even mild dysphoria is associated with poorer academic performance among, paradoxically, academically stronger female students. We discuss the importance of attending to this group of students who are often overlooked because they are relatively high achievers, but who may benefit from short-term, …
Best Practice In Developing Critical Analyses: An Empirical Study Of Self-Efficacy From An Interdisciplinary Perspective, Coleen E. Sams, Doreen Sams
Best Practice In Developing Critical Analyses: An Empirical Study Of Self-Efficacy From An Interdisciplinary Perspective, Coleen E. Sams, Doreen Sams
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Despite substantial usage of case study analyses as learning tools in diverse fields of study, business graduate students often arrive with little to no prior knowledge in how to effectively use this tool. Using the Sams efficacy model (2009) strategic to business education this study identified a dearth in the usage of case study analyses in business graduate courses and also provides a step-by-step process to increase critical analysis and efficacy through the usage of case studies. Findings demonstrate that critical analysis is developed through a combination of teaching tools through additive strategies to impact more learning modalities at the …

Critical Thinking Skills Of Nursing Students In Lecture-Based Teaching And Case-Based Learning, Mahmoud A. Kaddoura Ph.D.
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
In today's technologically advanced healthcare world, nursing students should be active learners and think critically to provide safe patient care. A strategy that promotes students' active learning is case-based learning (CBL). The purpose of this study was to examine critical thinking (CT) abilities of nursing students from two different curricular approaches, CBL and didactic teaching. The design used in this research was a comparative descriptive survey. The sample included 103 participants; 65 students from the CBL nursing program and 38 students from the didactic nursing program offered by the MOH Schools of Nursing in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Data …
Reconsidering Boyer's Reconsideration: Paradigms, Sharing, And Engagement, David Starr-Glass
Reconsidering Boyer's Reconsideration: Paradigms, Sharing, And Engagement, David Starr-Glass
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Ernest Boyer provided a purpose for a scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) although he might not have provided a description of the process. Boyer’s contribution concerned the nature of scholarship and research and, as such, it implicitly questioned existing assumptions, paradigms and epistemologies. Disciplinary paradigms are examined through the work of Thomas Kuhn in order to appreciate their strengths and limitations. An analysis of Boyer’s reconsideration of research and scholarship of engagement then provides purpose and direction for the scholarship of teaching. As an emergent discipline, SoTL finds itself defined and described. In that description there are concerns about …
An Analysis Of The Occupational Stress Factors Identified By Certified Teachers, Sue Ellen Johannsen
An Analysis Of The Occupational Stress Factors Identified By Certified Teachers, Sue Ellen Johannsen
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Teacher attrition is a serious issue facing school administrators today. In order to implement effective educational programs, schools need experienced teachers who are equipped to deal with such challenges. In response to increased work demands, and the challenge of educating a diverse student population, many teachers are leaving the field of education, citing stress as a primary reason for leaving. Stress factors cited most often include inadequate salaries, work overload, curriculum concerns stemming from federal, state and local mandates, lack of shared decision making and unsatisfactory relationships with stakeholders. The researcher sought to compare the stress factors experienced by teachers …
The Effects Of Stereotype Threat On State Levels Of Stigma Consciousness And Overall Performance On A Stereotype-Relevant Task, Gwenith Blount-Nuss
The Effects Of Stereotype Threat On State Levels Of Stigma Consciousness And Overall Performance On A Stereotype-Relevant Task, Gwenith Blount-Nuss
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Situational anxiety surrounding performance has been shown to adversely impact task performance by members of negatively stereotyped groups, creating a stereotype threat effect. This study tested the hypothesis that the anticipation of being stereotyped, known as stigma consciousness, is one of many contributing factors to the expression of stereotype threat effects. One area in which stereotype threat has been shown to exist is in the domain of mathematics, with females being negatively stereotyped in the subject and often underperforming relative to males. In this study, male and female participants were presented with a stereotype prime manipulation and then asked to …
The Message Or The Messenger: The Effects Of Political Attitudes And Source On Perceptions Of Media Bias, Emily E. Eisenhart
The Message Or The Messenger: The Effects Of Political Attitudes And Source On Perceptions Of Media Bias, Emily E. Eisenhart
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
As the televised news media market becomes increasingly diversified, the evidence available suggests that news media audiences are more fragmented than ever, audiences trust the media less and less, and that news consumers tend to seek outlets that they believe share their political attitudes and worldview (Knobloch-Westerwick & Meng, 2009, Tsfati & Capella 2003, Niven 2002, Stalder, 2009, Pew Center, 2009). Researchers Vallone, Ross, and Lepper (1985) were some of the first to describe empirically an observation they call the “hostile media phenomenon.” This phenomenon draws from social judgment theory and assumes that “individuals evaluate the legitimacy of an object …

Chaos As Ecological And Autochthonous Expression: An Ecocritical Study Of La Vorágine, Danion L. Doman
Chaos As Ecological And Autochthonous Expression: An Ecocritical Study Of La Vorágine, Danion L. Doman
The Coastal Review
This article utilizes principles of ecological criticism to provide new readings of both the role and presentation of nature in José Eustasio Rivera’s novel La vorágine. Whereas critics have heretofore focused on Rivera’s memorable subjective descriptions of the Amazon jungle, the present study foregrounds the rich diversity of the real organisms represented in these depictions. In addition, this essay explores the connections between the text’s core trope, chaos, and the current ecological and social scientific understanding of the ecology and the human history of the Amazon Basin.

The Influence Of Training Load On Performance And Psychological Variables In Female Collegiate Swimmers, Jacquelyn A. Nagle
The Influence Of Training Load On Performance And Psychological Variables In Female Collegiate Swimmers, Jacquelyn A. Nagle
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Overtraining has become a very important topic in athletics over the past few decades. Resulting from an imbalance between training stress and recovery, the manifestation of overtraining is unique to each individual, with deviations in physiological, psychological, and performance variables. Regardless of the overwhelming amount of research, there is a lack of any comprehensive studies addressing all components of overtraining. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to describe the effects training load had on performance and psychological variables across a competitive season in collegiate female swimmers. Participants included 19 Division I female swimmers (Age: 19.74±1.19 yrs) who completed 6 …
Currere, Illness, And Motherhood: A Dwelling Place For Examining The Self, Michelle C. Thompson
Currere, Illness, And Motherhood: A Dwelling Place For Examining The Self, Michelle C. Thompson
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation is a pathography, my experience as a mother dwelling with illness which began because of my son's illness. The purpose of this dissertation is two-fold: to examine my Self as a mother dwelling with illness so that I may begin to work through repressed emotions and to further complicate the conversation begun by Marla Morris (2008) by illuminating the ill person's voice as one which is underrepresented in the canon. This dissertation is written autobiographically and analyzed psychoanalytically. The subjects of chaos, the Self, and motherhood are examined as they apply to my illness. In addition to psychoanalysis, …

Caregivers Of Children Enrolled In Georgia's Early Intervention Program: The Influence Of Rural Or Urban Residence On Knowledge Of Rights, Community Resources And Social Supports, Matthew William Walker
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to establish the baseline for understanding the impact of place of residence on socio-demographic factors for caregivers of children enrolled in Georgia's Early Intervention (EI) program. This study is a secondary analysis of nine questions from the Family Outcomes Survey (FOS) collected between January of 2006, and May of 2010 (N=15,474). The Kruskal-Wallis Statistic and the Samawi-Vogel Overlap Coefficient were used to examine the relation between the rural or urban classification of county of residence, the health district in which participants reside, and the participant's knowledge of rights, access to community resources, and social …
A Case Study Of Single-Sex Biology Classes In A High School In South Georgia, Robert Huston Costlow
A Case Study Of Single-Sex Biology Classes In A High School In South Georgia, Robert Huston Costlow
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The research on single-sex classrooms, especially in high schools, is at best, sparse. Settings and findings vary so dramatically from one area to another that correlating studies is difficult. However, with the advent of No Child Left Behind (2001), schools have been given the opportunity to explore new and creative ways to increase student achievement. Single-sex classrooms are one of the ways schools across the country are attempting to meet the criteria of NCLB. Some single-sex studies have shown that female students improve test scores in areas that are generally thought of as male-dominated areas, such as math and science; …
Ego Depletion And Delay Of Gratification, Shrinidhi Subramaniam
Ego Depletion And Delay Of Gratification, Shrinidhi Subramaniam
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Ego depletion suggests that self-control draws from a limited resource. Therefore, resistance to immediate temptation can be impaired when that resource is depleted. Participants performed a difficult or easy serial subtraction task (cognitive processing) in front of or in the absence of a video camera (social processing). Participants then completed a delay-of-gratification task where they either chose the immediate, small reward of 1 research participation credit or waited for a larger amount of credit. Participants who completed a difficult task while being recorded by a video camera waited a shorter period of time for more credit than those who performed …

Contamination Running Deep: Oral Histories Of Environmental Racism, Injustice, And Outrage Of One Family In A Southern African-American Community, Deborah M. Dean
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This is an inquiry into oral histories of five members of my family that are residents of a southern African American community, Hyde Park located in Augusta, Georgia. These members of my family, Eunice Jordan, Sharon Wells, Ernest Jordan, DeWanna Jordan, and Darius Jordan, have endured the environmental contamination and social injustices. These family members are children and grandchildren of Willie and Lillian Wells who moved to Hyde Park in 1950 with the intention of living the "American Dream" and creating a legacy for future generations that began with owning their land and home. Since then the family has learned …

An Assessment Of Hpv Vaccination By Georgia Physicians: Knowledge, Barriers, Supports, Practices, And Adherence To Acip Guidelines And Recommendations, Elizabeth Dixon
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine Georgia physicians' administration of the quadrivalent human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine to 11-12 year old females according to the Advisory Council Immunization Practices (ACIP) guidelines, their intention to recommend HPV vaccine to 11-12 year old males, and their perceived knowledge and barriers associated with HPV vaccination. A distinction between urban and rural was examined to determine if there were differences in HPV vaccination recommendation. A stratified sample was created from the Georgia Vaccine For Children (VFC) provider list. The final sampling frame included 264 (n = 264) providers. Of these, 218 physicians were …
