Flow In The Community College Classroom?: An Autoethnographic Exploration, Amanda Latz Jul 2012

Flow In The Community College Classroom?: An Autoethnographic Exploration, Amanda Latz

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Flow theory has not been previously applied to faculty experiences in higher education. Upon carrying out this autoethnographic self-study, I discovered that my experiences as a community college instructor were riddled with periods of being in flow. During the spring academic semester of 2010, I created weekly journals of my teaching life. Then, I coded and analyzed the journals and three themes were generated: preparation rituals, feedback, and solidarity. This self-study provided me with a wealth of knowledge about my own teaching and could assist others in understanding their own teaching experiences. It also highlighted the importance of affect in …

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The integration of research and education is an essential component of our university’s teaching philosophy. Recently, we made a curricular revision to facilitate such an approach in the General Chemistry Laboratory, to teach students that investigative approaches are at the core of sciences. The curriculum revision included new interdisciplinary experiments and a research project. Investigative, peer review, and cooperative learning strategies were introduced to enhance student learning and engagement. An environment in which students can analyze results within a laboratory session and reach comprehensive and quantitative conclusions was encouraged.

To assess our results, students completed questionnaires, evaluated their peers and …

Improving The Development Of Student's Research Questions And Hypotheses In An Introductory Business Research Methods Course, Laurie Strangman, Elizabeth Knowles Jul 2012

Improving The Development Of Student's Research Questions And Hypotheses In An Introductory Business Research Methods Course, Laurie Strangman, Elizabeth Knowles

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

In an introductory research methods course, students often develop research questions and hypotheses that are vague or confusing, do not contain measurable concepts, and are too narrow in scope or vision. Because of this, the final research projects often fail to provide useful information or address the overall research problem. A Lesson Study approach was used to develop a new lesson that models the development of research questions and hypotheses and provides multiple opportunities for students to practice this skill. Two tools were also developed to help students navigate this process, and the learning outcomes of the lesson were clearly …

Student Opinions And Preferences Regarding Personal Response Systems In The Graduate Physical Therapy Classroom: A Mixed-Methods Inquiry, Andi Beth Mincer, Anne W. Thompson Jul 2012

Student Opinions And Preferences Regarding Personal Response Systems In The Graduate Physical Therapy Classroom: A Mixed-Methods Inquiry, Andi Beth Mincer, Anne W. Thompson

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Little investigation has been conducted on the use of Personal Response Systems (PRS) in either graduate-level courses or health professions education. Through anonymous participation in focus groups, graduate physical therapy students described specific aspects of PRS that they felt facilitated their learning, as well as aspects that hindered their learning. A Likert-type survey was constructed based on focus group outcomes and was offered to the entire population of physical therapy students at our institution. Results indicated that PRS was perceived to be useful for examination preparation, application of concepts, facilitation of discussion, and immediate feedback. Participants perceived cost and technical …

Use Of Oral Reflection In Facilitating Graduate Eal Students’ Oral-Language Production And Strategy Use: An Empirical Action Research Study, Li-Shih Huang Jul 2012

Use Of Oral Reflection In Facilitating Graduate Eal Students’ Oral-Language Production And Strategy Use: An Empirical Action Research Study, Li-Shih Huang

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Research in the fields of second-language acquisition and education has supported the value of written reflection, but scant research has explored how other types of reflection may come into play when learners employ strategies and produce oral language. This paper reports findings from an action research study that focused on integrating individual oral reflection using digital recorders to facilitate 18 graduate-level English-as-an-additionallanguage (EAL) students’ learning of academic speaking skills. The qualitative and quantitative results provide important empirical information about what strategies graduate students used, the relationships between the learners’ strategic behaviours and oral performance, and differences in the quality of …

Criteria For Evaluating Journals In The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning In Agriculture, Natural Resources, And The Life Sciences, Marianne S. Bracke, Sharon A. Weiner, Judith M. Nixon, Scott Deatherage

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The purpose of this paper was to identify existing criteria that may be considered in evaluating journals in the scholarship of teaching and learning in agriculture, natural resources, and the life sciences. This can assist faculty authors and evaluators of promotion and tenure cases to explain indicators of the quality of the publications. The commonly accepted criteria are: peer review; acceptance rate; longevity; open access availability; inclusion in indexing/abstracting services; citation analysis; and expert opinion. These data were collected for a representative set of journals which indicated that: acceptance rates for the journals varied widely; most of the journals existed …

Mental Preparation Techniques And Accomplishment Of Race Goals By Ironman Triathletes: A Qualitative Investigation, Kayla Frimmel May 2012

Mental Preparation Techniques And Accomplishment Of Race Goals By Ironman Triathletes: A Qualitative Investigation, Kayla Frimmel

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The Ironman triathlon is a rapidly growing sporting event worldwide but little research has been found on the psychological processes employed by its participants. Grand' Maison (2004) found that 97% of Ironman participants interviewed responded strongly or very strongly when asked "How important do you believe that mental skills are in Ironman training and racing?" However, which of these mental skills produce the best race results is still unknown. The purpose of this study is to discover which mental skills the Ironman participant population is utilizing during training and how these skills are seen to influence. Accomplishment, or lack of …

Utilizing Self-Determination Theory To Assist In Understanding College Students' Motivation For Physical Activity, Tyler Coe Mcdaniel May 2012

Utilizing Self-Determination Theory To Assist In Understanding College Students' Motivation For Physical Activity, Tyler Coe Mcdaniel

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Obesity has become a national epidemic, (CDC, 2006; Desai, Miller, Staples, & Bravender, 2008), while causing life-threatening health conditions including cardiovascular disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes and other functional issues (Schoenborn & Strommel, 2011). It has been estimated that less than half of populations in industrialized countries are sufficiently physically active to prevent health issues (Sapkota, Bowles, Ham, & Kohl, 2005). The current study utilized the Self-Determination theory (SDT) by Deci and Ryan (1985, 2002) to help understand motivation, but more specifically exercise motivations. This study targeted basic psychological need (PNSE) and motivation regulations (BREQ-2) of a general population of …

Skin Deep: The Elusive Aphrodite, Amy Lynn Fix May 2012

Skin Deep: The Elusive Aphrodite, Amy Lynn Fix

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

"Skin Deep: The Elusive Aphrodite" explores women's body image issues influenced by a variety of sources, with the most common culprit being mass media's portrayal of "beautiful" women in current American culture. The artworks in this series create a dialogue with the viewer about varying definitions of women's beauty by using a variety of women as models for either hand-made paper body casts, or for large-scale, emotionally-charged, representational portraits. The concept of ideal beauty is alluded to by the Venus or Aphrodite-inspired positions within the portraits, while the detrimental effect of the pursuit of an often-unattainable image of perfection are …

Perceptions Of The Influence Of Teacher Of The Year Awards Upon Teachers' Personal, School, And Professional Morale, Sherri Baker Butler May 2012

Perceptions Of The Influence Of Teacher Of The Year Awards Upon Teachers' Personal, School, And Professional Morale, Sherri Baker Butler

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate k-12 teachers' perceptions of the influence of Teacher of the Year (TOTY) awards upon teachers' personal, school, and professional morale, as defined by Mackenzie (2007a). The sample was comprised of the 198 respondents to the researcher's online Teacher Recognition Schemes survey during July-August 2011. The study utilized a mixed methods approach that included collecting and analyzing both quantitative and qualitative research data. Statistical significance was noted in the following areas: TOTY recipients perceived significantly greater influences of the award upon both personal and professional morale than did their non-recipient colleagues. Further, TOTY …

Complicated Conversations On The Dis/Ease Of Mental Illness: The Ebb And Flow Of Bipolar Disorder, Doreen Louise Williams May 2012

Complicated Conversations On The Dis/Ease Of Mental Illness: The Ebb And Flow Of Bipolar Disorder, Doreen Louise Williams

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This work is a conversation about mental illness, specifically bipolar disorder. It is a complicated, convoluted conversation that covers a broad spectrum of facets. The central theme is to uncover the role that bipolar disorder has played in impacting schools, communities, and families and how that role aggravates and perplexes students, teachers, parents, community leaders. This dissertation does not try to create any answers or solutions. It is an investigation, an exploration of why mental illness creates such confusion in our minds. How did this confusion develop and what perpetuates its continuation? Can or even should we, consider it a …

The Effect Of Classroom Structure And Practice On Transition To Middle School, Eric Paul Schexnaildre May 2012

The Effect Of Classroom Structure And Practice On Transition To Middle School, Eric Paul Schexnaildre

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The passage from elementary school to middle school, along with physical, social, and emotional changes associated with adolescence, often results in personal and social, organizational, and academic declines. The classroom structure of elementary school varies between a team teaching setting and a self-contained setting, and each instructional environment has the potential to impact all areas of development for each student. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between fifth grade classroom setting (team teaching vs. self-contained) and sixth grade student behavior. The gender and the socio-economic status of transitioning students also served as variables of the study. …

The Mediation Of Personal Distress On Negative Television News And Donations, Walt Beddingfield Collins May 2012

The Mediation Of Personal Distress On Negative Television News And Donations, Walt Beddingfield Collins

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Previous research has shown that negative television news can lead to a reduction in positive affect (Harrell, 2000; Szabo & Hopkinson, 2007). What has yet to be investigated though is how negative television news influences an individual's interactions with others; precisely, how negative television news affects a person's empathy for persons in need and donation behaviors to help others. Participants were randomly assigned to four different conditions: local victim news condition, nonlocal victim news condition, far victim news condition, and a neutral media condition. Participants viewed media clips that corresponded with their condition and then filled out a questionnaire that …

Alcohol-Cues Relate To Self-Perceptions Of Aggression, Natalie Christine Hooks May 2012

Alcohol-Cues Relate To Self-Perceptions Of Aggression, Natalie Christine Hooks

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Alcohol consumption is linked to increases in aggression. Recently, alcohol-related cues alone have been shown to increase aggressive thoughts and behaviors. Furthermore, aggression is displayed differently by men and women; men are more physically aggressive, whereas women are more relationally aggressive. The current study further explored this influence of alcohol-related cues on physical and relational aggression. Furthermore, the study explored the influence of participant gender on type of aggression expressed. In this study, 126 undergraduates were primed with alcohol-related (e.g., Miller Lite) or non-alcohol related commercials (e.g., Diet Coke). Additionally, participants completed a competitive noise-blast task (physical aggression measure of …

K-12 Principals' Perceptions Of Their Technology Leadership Preparedness, Wendy Burns Metcalf May 2012

K-12 Principals' Perceptions Of Their Technology Leadership Preparedness, Wendy Burns Metcalf

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Adopting technology in the K-12 classroom has moved from adapting lessons that highlight a technology to pervasive use of interactive and handheld devices. This instruction-technology connection creates high expectations to engage today's learners and transform education to support 21st century skills. School leaders have the complex task of incorporating technologies to enhance teaching and learning. The 2009 NETS-A standards were used to define the dimensions of leader preparedness for a technology-rich environment. The research design used a quasi-experimental quantitative study to identify leaders' perceptions of technology leadership preparedness and to determine the impact of one program, the Quality-Plus Leader Academy …

The Last Word, Kristin Lawhon Kyzer May 2012

The Last Word, Kristin Lawhon Kyzer

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The last word, as defined by Webster's dictionary, describes the final remark in a verbal exchange, the power of a final decision, a definitive statement or treatment, and the most advanced, up-to-date, or fashionable exemplar of its kind. I venture to explore and utilize the meaning of this well-known idiom through the creation of visual artworks that comprise my Master of Fine Art thesis research. Within this body of visual artworks, titled The Last Word, I explore the evolution and realization of self-image through the examination of disparate and reciprocal relationships. Utilizing personal symbolic imagery, provocative text and mixed media …

Feminine Critique And Domestic Mystique: Representations Of The Home In Elizabeth Madox Roberts, Lyndsey Brown May 2012

Feminine Critique And Domestic Mystique: Representations Of The Home In Elizabeth Madox Roberts, Lyndsey Brown

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Elizabeth Madox Roberts, once considered one of the most important authors of the early twentieth century, has suffered critical neglect since her death in 1941. Though Robert Penn Warren wrote an important essay calling for her recovery in 1963, the political and social environment of the 1960s, including the advent of second-wave feminism, contributed, in part, to the continued neglect of Roberts's work. Roberts's texts do not actively protest social or economic injustice; instead, they focus on the internalized lives of her protagonists. This internalization is seen in Roberts's complex portrayal of the home and domesticity. This paper analyzes the …

Leveling The Playing Field: Curriculum Studies And Fast Pitch Softball, Melinda M. Roberts May 2012

Leveling The Playing Field: Curriculum Studies And Fast Pitch Softball, Melinda M. Roberts

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Women in sport challenge our cultural assumptions about gender and sexuality. Athletics has been viewed as a male domain, with its emphasis on strength, agility, competition, intellect, and aggression. To play sports, women are pressured to maintain and emphasize their femininity without appearing overly aggressive or possessing masculine traits associated with sport, particularly in the team sport of softball. This research examines the expectations a patriarchal society places on young women who play sports competitively and how such expectations with regards to femininity in both behavior and appearance influence a young female athlete's identity formation. Through the lenses of gender …

The Stares To Achievement: African American Youth Resist Risk And Rhetoric To Achieve Academic Success, Ch́E Yvette Wyatt May 2012

The Stares To Achievement: African American Youth Resist Risk And Rhetoric To Achieve Academic Success, Ch́E Yvette Wyatt

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

For African American students, academic achievement is often discussed in terms of student deficits and cultural deficiencies. Citing high dropout rates and the achievement gap, focus is often centered on understanding African American achievement in terms of school failures. As such, African American students are, at times, recognized negatively in terms of their academic abilities. Moving away from this deficit perspective of understanding African American students and their school achievement, this study examines the standpoint of six African American students who, despite possessing characteristics that complicated their school experiences, achieved success. Interrupting common discourse and recognizing these students as holders …

Comparison Of Archeological Survey Techniques At Camp Lawton, A Civil War Prison Stockade, James Kevin Chapman

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

In 2009, Dr. Sue Moore of Georgia Southern University was contacted by State Archeologist Dr. Dave Crass of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Historic Preservation Division. He proposed an exploratory survey of the site of a Civil War Confederate prisoner of war camp known as Camp Lawton located on Magnolia Springs State Park and Bo Ginn National Fish Hatchery in Millen, Georgia. Camp Lawton was constructed, occupied, and abandoned over an approximately three month period in the fall of 1864. The survey served a twofold purpose. First, was to evaluate survey methods to determine the most efficient for use …

Perceptions Of The Psychological Rehabilitation Of A Student-Athlete With An Injury In Sport At The Ncaa Division I Level : A Narrative Approach Of Student-Athletes And Athletic Trainers, Hannah Rita Bennett May 2012

Perceptions Of The Psychological Rehabilitation Of A Student-Athlete With An Injury In Sport At The Ncaa Division I Level : A Narrative Approach Of Student-Athletes And Athletic Trainers, Hannah Rita Bennett

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

How an athlete responds and recovers from an injury varies with each unique situation. One's reaction to their sport injury can be an influential determinant of their return to sport (Ahern & Lohr, 1997; Podlog & Eklund, 2005; Podlog & Eklund, 2009; Podlog, Lochbaum, & Stevens, 2009; Walker, Thatcher, & Lavallee, 2007). Those working directly with injured athletes are in a unique position to administer both physiological and psychological rehabilitation. Research has surfaced regarding the need of athletic trainers to also focus on the mental aspects of recovery (Barefield & McCallister, 1997; Gordon, S., Milios, D., & Grove, J.R., 1991; …
