Creating Peace In Our Communities: An Analysis Of Community Reconciliation Techniques, Jessica Shanken Apr 2016

Creating Peace In Our Communities: An Analysis Of Community Reconciliation Techniques, Jessica Shanken

Honors College Theses

Given the rise in efforts to resolve race issues in American communities and ethnic conflicts internationally through open communication techniques, I examine ways that these efforts can be carried out more effectively by analyzing the structure of dialogue centered on race at a large university in a rural area of the Southeast. For that purpose, survey data was collected from students before and after they attended an open forum about race and race relations on their campus to determine the impact of the forum on students' perceptions and attitudes regarding race in their community. In addition, I draw from two …

The Influence Of Group Development On Stress Appraisal And Coping Responses Of Expedition Trip Leaders, Julie Swantek, John Peden Apr 2016

The Influence Of Group Development On Stress Appraisal And Coping Responses Of Expedition Trip Leaders, Julie Swantek, John Peden

Honors College Theses

Group development has the potential to contribute to our understanding of stress appraisal and coping among expedition trip leaders. Despite extensive research on the stress-coping process in daily life, there has been little effort to determine how expedition leaders appraise and cope with stress in environments characterized by risk and uncertainty. Group development stages and the stress-coping process have been researched independently, but what remains to be explored is their potential inter-relationship. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between Tuckman's stages of group development, stress appraisal, and coping responses among trip leaders of multi-day wilderness expeditions. …

Racial Influences On The Perception Of Police, Sam Omelian Apr 2016

Racial Influences On The Perception Of Police, Sam Omelian

GS4 Student Scholars Symposium

Previous research has found racial background is a significant factor for the perception of police. However, there is little research done on the impact of the race of the police officer on the perceptions of police. This study examined the impact of racial influences on the perception of police. To study this, we used vignettes of a violent police citizen encounter, in which the officer's use of force was justified, unjustified, or ambiguous. Participants were randomly assigned to instructions, in which the police officer was identified as White or African American. Through self-report surveys, participants rated their perception of the …

Repetition And Formatting In Medication Instructions, Jessica Le Apr 2016

Repetition And Formatting In Medication Instructions, Jessica Le

GS4 Student Scholars Symposium

Comprehension of pictures and text in health-related materials like medication instructions and pamphlets plays a critical role in health outcomes. Understanding the materials can help promote information integration, information recall, medication adherence, and improved health communication. Existing research that address the effects of repetition in pictures and text have been in other contexts such as object assembly. It shows that repetitious multimedia results in better free recall and accuracy and response times in order verification (BrunyÌ© et al., 2008). Research also suggests that there is better recall for pictures integrated with the text than separated (Johnson & Mayer, 2012). However, …

Psychopathy, Empathy, And Prosocial Helping: Can You Increase Altruistic Helping For Individuals High In Psychopathy?, Courtney Beussink

GS4 Student Scholars Symposium

Psychopathy is a disorder encompassing a distinct set of interpersonal, affective, and behavioral traits including lack of empathy and remorse, manipulativeness, callousness, selfishness, antisocial lifestyle, impulsivity, aggressiveness, and social deviance. It is estimated that approximately 15-25% of incarcerated individuals and 0.6-1% of individuals within the community are high in psychopathy (Coid, Yang, Ullrich, Roberts, & Hare, 2009; Hare, 2003). Since psychopathic traits are linked with deviant behavioral outcomes and the prevalence rates are relatively high within forensic and community populations, interventions designed to target the core personality deficits and reduce psychopathic tendencies are needed. The current study seeks to induce …

Influence Of Game Stimuli On Participant Snacking, Emily Welsh

GS4 Student Scholars Symposium

In 2003 the Pew Research Center conducted a study which found the 70% of college students play some form of electronic game (video, computer, internet) (Jones, 2003), and it is our belief that this data has only increased with the iPhone take-over that took place in 2007. In 2015 the CDC reported that nearly 35% of adults in the United States are considered overweight or obese, and has been found to be a key influence in the onset Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and numerous other health concerns, to include mental illness in the form of depression, high anxiety, and …

Levels Of Resilience And Life Satisfaction In Those With A History Of Child Sexual Abuse, Kim Iannacone Apr 2016

Levels Of Resilience And Life Satisfaction In Those With A History Of Child Sexual Abuse, Kim Iannacone

GS4 Student Scholars Symposium

The current study investigates the relationship between those with a history of child sexual abuse (CSA) and existing levels of resilience and life satisfaction. The purpose of this study is to gain a better understanding of life events and current functioning among emerging adults.

Previous literature has established predictable outcomes in those with a history of CSA, including resiliency. Resilience is defined as the process of effectively negotiating, adapting to, or managing significant stress or trauma (Windle, 2010). In studying levels of resilience, Liem et al., 1997, found that about 40% of participants reported resilience despite having experienced CSA.

Streamlining The Johnson-Neyman Technique For Two-Way Interactions, Stephen W. Carden Apr 2016

Streamlining The Johnson-Neyman Technique For Two-Way Interactions, Stephen W. Carden

GS4 Student Scholars Symposium

When trying to determine the effect of one variable upon another, it is often the case that the strength of the effect depends on a third variable. For example, it is well known that alcohol has an effect on reaction time, but the size of that effect depends greatly on the body mass of the individual. These types of situations are the subject of moderation analysis, also known as interaction analysis. One of the techniques for studying these interactions is the Johnson-Neyman technique. While the statistical concepts are fairly simple, the computations are tedious and involved, and most software packages …

Psychological Inflexibility And Prejudiced Reactions When Exposed To Violent Isis Propaganda, Arthur T. Hatton Apr 2016

Psychological Inflexibility And Prejudiced Reactions When Exposed To Violent Isis Propaganda, Arthur T. Hatton

GS4 Student Scholars Symposium

The purpose of this research is to examine the psychological effect of viewing news stories reporting on violent ISIS propaganda films. In particular, I am seeking to determine whether exposure to these news clips influences how people think about Muslims, Syrian refugees, political candidates, or unfair profiling in security policies, and whether psychological inflexibility, a construct taken from clinical psychology, influences this reaction. Psychological inflexibility is a behavioral trait that describes the degree to which people can tolerate distressing internal events, such as negative emotions, thoughts, and pain, and whether a person modifies his or her own behavior in order …

Building Students’ Civic And Moral Responsibility And Assessing Outcomes Through Service Learning, Lori Moog Apr 2016

Building Students’ Civic And Moral Responsibility And Assessing Outcomes Through Service Learning, Lori Moog

Gulf South Summit on Service-Learning (Archived)

Colleges and Universities have great potential to make a positive difference in meeting community needs and addressing complex social and economic problems through service learning because it is a distinct program from other campus-community partnerships due to its deliberate intent to work collaboratively through service that is linked to course work. Developing service learning programs that engage students in meeting community needs also helps students meet their own educational goals. Integrating service and academic study optimizes resources for the community. Because of these mutually beneficial goals, service learning fits into higher education’s mission of service to the community. Moreover, in …

The Impact Of A Community-Based Engaged Learning Experience For Students And Community Partners Through Cancer And Exercise Wellness Programs, Emily Simonavice, Laura Childs

Gulf South Summit on Service-Learning (Archived)

There are a growing number of cancer survivors within our society that experience negative physical and psychological side effects from cancer related treatments. Exercise has been shown to be an effective way to attenuate some of these negative side effects; however, reports indicate that the majority of cancer survivors do not engage in adequate amounts of exercise. Thus, the goal of the present study was to incorporate a five-hour service learning project into the Exercise Science curriculum in which students would educate cancer survivors about the benefits of exercise and basic exercise prescription information. Additionally, students implemented a comprehensive exercise …

Who's In Charge Of Whom? A Study Into The Deference Paid By Federal Court Judges To Executive Agencies, Andrew Smallwood

Honors College Theses

With judicial decisions instigating much of the immediate political changes in recent history, this study delves into the relationship between a judge’s tenure on the bench as well as other contributing factors, such as political ideologies, and the decision in cases relevant to politically charged agencies. This purposeful study into the United States Court of Appeals, District of Columbia Circuit, attempts to isolate specific determinants in cases involving the National Labor Relations Board and the Environmental Protection Agency. Logistic Regression analysis is used to determine the existence of possible relationships between judicial behavior and factors such as prior executive experience …

Elementary School Students' Quantitative Reasoning: Processing Whole Numbers And Proportions, Ty W. Boyer, Natalie Branch Apr 2016

Elementary School Students' Quantitative Reasoning: Processing Whole Numbers And Proportions, Ty W. Boyer, Natalie Branch

Psychology: Faculty Publications

Elementary school-aged children have great difficulty reasoning proportionally and struggle with fractions and decimals, theoretically because proportions do not abide by the same principles as more familiar whole number quantities. The present study examines individual differences in proportional reasoning and whole number representations and tests a prediction for a nonlinearity in the development of relations between the two. Pre-kindergarten through fifth-grade students completed a battery of computerized tasks, including a proportional reasoning task, “which is more?” and “which is #?” whole number comparison tasks, and symbolic and nonsymbolic numerical line-estimation tasks. The results indicate that though younger children’s performance on …

Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association

Background: Among children, there are substantial ethno-racial minority disparities across a broad range of health-related behaviors, experiences, and outcomes. Addressing these disparities is important, as childhood and adolescence establish health trajectories that extend throughout life.

Methods: The current study employed a community-based participatory research approach to gain community insight on child health priorities and to frame an intervention aimed at improving the health of minority children. Eight focus groups were conducted among seventy-five African American parents in a Southeastern city. The current study was guided by an ecological theoretical framework.

Results: Although the focus of this investigation was on community …

Background: The obesity epidemic has garnered much attention as a public health crisis. In order to make progress, it is necessary to understand the factors associated with obesity. One area of research needing more development is the link between obesity and other chronic health conditions. The objective of the present study was to further understand the relationship between obesity and the prevalence of anxiety and depression in Athens-Clarke County in northeast Georgia.

Methods: Data from the 2015 Athens-Clarke County Community Health Needs Assessment (n=1234) were used to assess the relationship between obesity and the prevalence of anxiety and depression among …
