Colon Cancer Knowledge, Screening Barriers, And Information Seeking In Northeastern Georgia, Jeffrey K. Springston, Su-I Hou
Colon Cancer Knowledge, Screening Barriers, And Information Seeking In Northeastern Georgia, Jeffrey K. Springston, Su-I Hou
Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association
Background: The present study assessed utilization of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening and knowledge, barriers, and information-seeking among adults in northeastern Georgia.
Methods: A total of 245 people aged 40 years and older from selected rural, suburban, and small towns in northeastern Georgia participated in this cross-sectional survey.
Results: Respondents aged 50 years and older were more likely to think that they “don’t need screening at their current age” as compared with those in their 40s. Higher information-seeking correlated with lower screening barriers (p
Discussion: Respondents generally had a low level of knowledge about CRC. Individuals with lower perceived screening barriers …

The Importance Of Music Festivals: An Unanticipated And Underappreciated Path To Identity Formation, Kimberly F. Rudolph
The Importance Of Music Festivals: An Unanticipated And Underappreciated Path To Identity Formation, Kimberly F. Rudolph
Honors College Theses
The purpose of this study is to understand and explain the growing popularity of music and art festivals around the world. Music festivals are events consisting of a variety of bands and musical artists performing shows, on numerous stages, over a period of days to a large audience in outside and inside venues. Through field research, participant-observation, personal interviews, and survey research at the 2015 Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, this study suggests that they are much more than simple entertainment venues. Because humans desire to belong and music functions in the capacity as a global language, music festivals are …

Psychological Inflexibility Predicts Attitudes Toward Syrian Refugees And National Security Policies, Arthur T. Hatton Sr., Michael Nielsen
Psychological Inflexibility Predicts Attitudes Toward Syrian Refugees And National Security Policies, Arthur T. Hatton Sr., Michael Nielsen
Psychology: Faculty Presentations (2009-2022)
Our research examines whether psychological inflexibility predicts support for national security policies that limit civil liberties, unfairly target Muslims, and exclude Syrian refugees from entering the country. New research has suggested that high psychological inflexibility may be implicated in prejudice (Vilardaga, Estevez, Levin, & Hayes, 2012). According to that theory, inflexibility may contribute to discriminatory behaviors because it describes a person's tendency to engage in behaviors aimed at down-regulating internal distress. Recently, an enormous number of refugees from Syria have relocated from Syria into the EU, other Middle Eastern Countries, and in the United States. A political backlash to both …

School-Based Dbt: Merging Mental Health And Behavioral Supports For High School Students At Tiers Ii & Iii: Sb-Dbt Nuts And Bolts, Jim Hanson
Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) is a research-based methodology to teach students and families emotional, behavioral, cognitive, and interpersonal regulation skills. Greencycling at the Botanical Garden: A living buffer and composting solution to an ever-growing problem
Carolyn Altman, Botanical Gardens of the Coastal Plain ($8,800)
Greencycling at the Garden created a living border around most of the 11-acre Garden. The plants in this border added to the Garden’s collections and helped address the air, noise and water pollution created by the busy Fair Road and Georgia Avenue Corridors. The creation and maintenance of this border produced more leaves and limbs than the Garden soil can absorb, so the project also included a request for a dump trailer, which was used to …

Police And Gangs: Undergraduates’ Perceptions Of The Similarities And Differences, Seroyah Williams
Honors College Theses
Police have been said to be the largest gang in America with badges. With recent events occurring throughout the United States, including police shootings of unarmed citizens, some may say that the police have shown various characteristics similar to those of gangs. Does the public also view officers, in general, in the same perspective? Surveys were administered to a large class of Georgia Southern University students to acquire their perceptions of both the police and gangs. Each student listed characteristics of the police and gangs, their opinion, and different ways those perceptions have been formed. The data collected revealed more …

Reliability Of Gastrocnemius Pennation Angle Using Ultrasound With 15 Degree Adduction And Abduction In Standing Position, Diana J. Tyler
Honors College Theses
A pennate muscle has fascicles that attach obliquely to its tendon. In parallel, more fascicles can be aligned allowing for greater production of force. In previous research, pennation angle has been measured using ultrasound while in a laying supine position. The purpose of this study was to measure pennation angle of the gastrocnemius muscle with ultrasound while standing neutral, in a mechanically loaded position. 16 participants, one two separate days, had their ultrasound imaging taken in three different foot orientations: neutral, fifteen degree adduction / abduction positions. This information was then be analyzed using ImageJ software. This research shows the …

Human Trafficking: Exploration Of Best Practices For Restoration And Integration For Survivors In Southeastern United States, Joel D. Shafer Mr.
Human Trafficking: Exploration Of Best Practices For Restoration And Integration For Survivors In Southeastern United States, Joel D. Shafer Mr.
Honors College Theses
Domestic human trafficking, especially of minors, has become a serious though largely
invisible issue in the United States. There are, however, organizations and policies in place that
have become active in caring for, restoring and reintegrating those survivors who have been able
to escape. Through the perspectives of service providers, this exploratory qualitative study
examines the factors of vulnerability of victims, the issues that support reintegration for
survivors and the best practices as well as indicators of success when caring for survivors. This
was accomplished through in-depth, semi-structured interviews with representatives from
various social service agencies in Georgia that are …
