Synthesis, Characterization And Cell Viability Of Novel Tripodal Amines, Kinsley Lupton Nov 2022

Synthesis, Characterization And Cell Viability Of Novel Tripodal Amines, Kinsley Lupton

Honors College Theses

Cancer, over the years, has become a much more prevalent focus for the scientific community. Organizations and laboratories all over the world have spent countless hours searching for a cure, trying to learn more about what makes cancer so powerful and what is the best way to stop its growth. Iron-chelation drugs were already on the market, and it was shown that they did have the ability to act as both iron-chelators and anticancer drugs. Most of these iron-chelating drugs are not as effective at killing cancer cells as the medical field desires. Novel iron-chelating tris-indolyl derivatives, GSO2, GSO4 and …

The Impact Of Academic Development Structures On Self-Perception: Honors Vs Non-Honors University Students, Beatrice M. Bean Nov 2022

The Impact Of Academic Development Structures On Self-Perception: Honors Vs Non-Honors University Students, Beatrice M. Bean

Honors College Theses

The purpose of the current study was to determine if there were variations in the self-perceptions of honors and non-honors collegiate students in areas of academic and non-academic self-concept. This research was important as it provides emphasis on an understudied population as well as gathers a deeper understanding of intricacies related to self-concept by incorporating comprehensive investigative measures. A sample of 236 students (72.6% female, 65.7% White, ages 18-51) took an online survey consisting of questions related to self-concept. By utilizing a series of two-tailed, independent samples t-tests we examined the differences between student self-perceptions of self-concept. Results indicated that …

Path-Stick Solitaire On Graphs, Jan-Hendrik De Wiljes, Martin Kreh Oct 2022

Path-Stick Solitaire On Graphs, Jan-Hendrik De Wiljes, Martin Kreh

Theory & Applications of Graphs

In 2011, Beeler and Hoilman generalised the game of peg solitaire to arbitrary connected graphs. Since then, peg solitaire and related games have been considered on many graph classes. In this paper, we introduce a variant of the game peg solitaire, called path-stick solitaire, which is played with sticks in edges instead of pegs in vertices. We prove several analogues to peg solitaire results for that game, mainly regarding different graph classes. Furthermore, we characterise, with very few exceptions, path-stick-solvable joins of graphs and provide some possible future research questions.

Black Stem Mentors Matter: A Qualitative Case Study Examining The Contextual Factors Of Mentoring Relationships In Stem At A Private Hbcu That Contribute To African American Student Persistence Within Stem Majors, Brittany Chambers Oct 2022

Black Stem Mentors Matter: A Qualitative Case Study Examining The Contextual Factors Of Mentoring Relationships In Stem At A Private Hbcu That Contribute To African American Student Persistence Within Stem Majors, Brittany Chambers

Georgia Educational Research Association Conference

As science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields continue to drive the nation forward, there remains a need for more diversified STEM minds. While there have been many interventions geared toward supporting minorities at predominately white institutions (PWIs), seldom do researchers investigate where African American STEM students experience the most success, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Therefore, this qualitative case study aimed to examine the contextual factors that make up mentoring relationships in STEM at a HBCU that contribute to African American student persistence in STEM. An exploratory, qualitative approach was utilized to focus on STEM students at a …

Alpha Labeling Of Amalgamated Cycles, Christian Barrientos Oct 2022

Alpha Labeling Of Amalgamated Cycles, Christian Barrientos

Theory & Applications of Graphs

A graceful labeling of a bipartite graph is an α-labeling if it has the property that the labels assigned to the vertices of one stable set of the graph are smaller than the labels assigned to the vertices of the other stable set. A concatenation of cycles is a connected graph formed by a collection of cycles, where each cycle shares at most either two vertices or two edges with other cycles in the collection. In this work we investigate the existence of α-labelings for this kind of graphs, exploring the concepts of vertex amalgamation to produce a …

Study On Early-Age Elastic Modulus Of Frc Using Electrical Resistivity And Resonance Frequency, Daniel A. Castillo Pereira, Saman Hedjazi, Ehsanul Kabir Oct 2022

Study On Early-Age Elastic Modulus Of Frc Using Electrical Resistivity And Resonance Frequency, Daniel A. Castillo Pereira, Saman Hedjazi, Ehsanul Kabir

Civil Engineering & Construction: Faculty Publications

The correlation between surface electrical resistivity and modulus of elasticity of fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) was studied within early ages in this study as a novel nondestructive method for predicting the modulus of elasticity of FRC. In addition to the relationship of the two quantities, the influence of various discrete fibers such as glass, nylon, polypropylene, and steel on the early age properties of FRC was investigated. Twenty-one FRC mixes were designed and tested; including four fiber types, three different fiber volume fractions for each fiber type, and three different water-to-cement ratios for all the different mixes. The surface electrical resistivity …

Air Quality And Cancer Prevalence Trends Across The Sub-Saharan African Regions During 2005–2020, Omolola Okunromade, Jingjing Yin, Clara Ray, Atin Adhikari Sep 2022

Air Quality And Cancer Prevalence Trends Across The Sub-Saharan African Regions During 2005–2020, Omolola Okunromade, Jingjing Yin, Clara Ray, Atin Adhikari

Health Policy & Community Health: Faculty Publications

Poor air quality and environmental pollution remain some of the main etiological factors leading to cancers and cancer-related deaths worldwide. As a result of human activities, deleterious airborne chemicals can be dispersed not only in the environment but also released in occupational environments and industrial areas. Air pollutants and cancer links are now established through various oxidative stress-related mechanisms and related DNA damages. Generally, ambient and indoor air pollutants have been understudied in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) compared to other regions in the world. Our study not only highlights the deleterious effects of air pollutants in these developing countries, but it …

Release Of Vocs, Gasses, And Bacteria From Contaminated Landings And Creeks Of Ogeechee River Basin, Victoria A. Clower, Melanie Sparrow, Atin Adhikari

Biostatistics, Epidemiology & Environmental Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

River landings are common public grounds, visited by many people every day. The aftermath of visiting these places may be unsettling since much trash is left behind and scattered throughout. The litter collects and with each rain or high wind, it has a better chance of ending up in our streams, rivers, creeks, and eventually our oceans. The main purpose of this study was to measure both air and water quality throughout the Ogeechee River basin in South Georgia to determine how each was impacted by trash. Ammonia, methane, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) along with temperature and humidity were …

Learning To Teach: Narratives And Counter-Narratives About Preservice Teachers, Meenakshi Sharma Aug 2022

Learning To Teach: Narratives And Counter-Narratives About Preservice Teachers, Meenakshi Sharma

Georgia Educational Researcher

The present article analyzes two critical frameworks within teacher education and how they construct preservice teachers and their learning within teacher education. These frameworks of 'Apprenticeship of Observation' (AoO) and 'Ambitious Practice' (AP) present opposing narratives about preservice teachers. While AoO directs our attention to preservice teachers' belief, AP emphasizes on developing professional practices that are core to the work of teaching. Teacher educators draw on these frameworks and narratives to inform their work with preservice teachers . Each framework has its unique stance on preservice teachers and makes noteworthy contributions that expand the field teacher education and evolve our …
