On The Stability Of Cycles By Delayed Feedback Control, Dmitriy Dmitrishin, Paul Hagelstein, Anna Khamitova, Alexander M. Stokolos

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

We present a delayed feedback control (DFC) mechanism for stabilizing cycles of one dimensional discrete time systems. In particular, we consider a delayed feedback control for stabilizingT-cycles of a differentiable functionf:R→Rof the form

x(k+1)=f(x(k))+u(k)

where

u(k)=(a1−1)f(x(k))+a2f(x(k−T))+...+aNf(x(k−(N−1)T)),

with a1+...+aN=1. Following an approach of Morgül, we construct a map F:RT+1→RT+1 whose fixed points correspond to T-cycles of f. We then analyze the local stability of the above DFC mechanism by evaluating the stability of the corresponding equilibrum points of F. We associate to each periodic orbit of f an …

Building A Culture Of Hope For Youth At Risk: Supporting Learners With Optimism, Place, Pride, And Purpose, Emily L. Gibson, Robert D. Barr Oct 2015

Building A Culture Of Hope For Youth At Risk: Supporting Learners With Optimism, Place, Pride, And Purpose, Emily L. Gibson, Robert D. Barr

National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Journal

A Culture of Hope provides a blueprint for schools wanting to meet the social/emotional needs of youth placed at risk. While the importance of meeting students’ social/emotional needs is clearly supported in the literature and in the media, teachers and administrators may need help in determining where and how to start. This essay introduces the Culture of Hope, provides an overview of the four Seeds of Hope, and shares links to student and staff surveys as well as methods for analyzing surveys to reveal student and staff needs.

Student Perceptions Of Caring Mathematics Instruction, Andrew B. Spires Oct 2015

Student Perceptions Of Caring Mathematics Instruction, Andrew B. Spires

Georgia Educational Research Association Conference

In my study I would like to examine how students who are part of a ninth grade mathematics intervention program describe caring mathematics instruction. Researchers have shown the importance of caring instruction especially as it relates to high school mathematics instruction of students who have a history of academic struggles and failure. Given that caring is a complex construct, students’ perceptions of teacher caring not only has the potential to inform high school mathematics instruction but also could lead to healthier and stronger teacher-student relationships.

Evaluating A Behaviorist And Constructivist Learning Theory For 21st Century Learners, Paul F. Sidney Oct 2015

Evaluating A Behaviorist And Constructivist Learning Theory For 21st Century Learners, Paul F. Sidney

Georgia Educational Research Association Conference

A critical issue in educational learning theory involves examining the effectiveness of the modern constructivists and the traditional behaviorist educational theories to impact 21st century global student learning. Research articles by Ultanir, E. (2012). An Epistemological Glance at the Constructivist Approach: Constructivist Learning in Dewey, Piaget, and Montessori, addresses learning development based on natural talent as an assertion of constructivism. Additionally Magni, Polina, Cappetta, & Proserpio (2013) in their article Diving Too Deep: How Cognitive Absorption and Group Learning Behavior Affect Individual Learning assert that the constructivist theory provides students with an intrinsic, collaborative effort towards learning. Additionally Oakland (2012) …

Technology Integration Into Differentiated Mathematics Instruction: Teacher Attitudes, Ardyth Foster, Jackie Kim Oct 2015

Technology Integration Into Differentiated Mathematics Instruction: Teacher Attitudes, Ardyth Foster, Jackie Kim

Georgia Educational Research Association Conference

Differentiated instruction (DI) is based on the idea that students differ significantly in their interests, learning styles, and readiness, and teaching strategies and decisions involving content, process, and product should vary accordingly[1]. Grimes and Stevens (2009)[2] reported a positive correlation between students’ academic success, motivation, and self-efficacy with its use. DI has also been found to result in improved test scores on district and state assessments in every subject, at every grade level. Beecher’s (2008) study supports the idea that using a DI approach and enriched learning experiences could help close the achievement gap between culturally and …

Gorenstein Flat Preenvelopes, Alina Iacob Oct 2015

Gorenstein Flat Preenvelopes, Alina Iacob

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

We consider a two sided noetherian ring R such that the character modules of Gorenstein injective left R-modules are Gorenstein flat right R-modules. We then prove that the class of Gorenstein flat right R-modules is preenveloping. We also show that the class of Gorenstein flat complexes of right R-modules is preenevloping in Ch(R).

In the second part of the paper we give examples of rings with the property that the character modules of Gorenstein injective modules are Gorenstein flat. We prove that any two sided noetherian ring R with i.d.Rop R < 1 has the desired property. We also prove that if R is a two sided noetherian ring with a dualizing bimodule R VR and such that R is left n-perfect for some positive integer n, then the character modules of Gorenstein injective modules are Gorenstein flat.

A New Class Of Generalized Modified Weibull Distribution With Applications, Broderick O. Oluyede, Shujiao Huang, Tiantian Yang Oct 2015

A New Class Of Generalized Modified Weibull Distribution With Applications, Broderick O. Oluyede, Shujiao Huang, Tiantian Yang

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

A new five parameter gamma-generalized modified Weibull (GGMW) distribution which includes exponential, Rayleigh, modified Weibull, Weibull, gamma-modified Weibull, gamma-modified Rayleigh, gamma-modified exponential, gamma-Weibull, gamma-Rayleigh, and gamma-exponential distributions as special cases is proposed and studied. Some mathematical properties of the new class of distributions including moments, distribution of the order statistics, and Renyi entropy are presented. Maximum likelihood estimation technique is used to estimate the model parameters and applications to a real datasets to illustrates the usefulness of the proposed class of models are presented.
