Up-Converted Emissions Of Er3+ Doped Gd2(Wo4)3 Phosphors, Grayson L. Wiggins Jan 2016

Up-Converted Emissions Of Er3+ Doped Gd2(Wo4)3 Phosphors, Grayson L. Wiggins

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

In this work, the up-conversion (UC) emissions of Er3+ in a gadolinium tungstate host was investigated to analyze the possible processes of up-conversion by 1500 nm and 980 nm excitation. Studies were conducted to see how the 4S3/2 -> 4I15/2 transition changed with varying current through the excitation source, varying excitation wavelength, and doping concentration. Power dependent studies revealed that under 1500 nm excitation the 4S3/2 -> 4I15/2 transition needed 3 photons, while 980 nm excitation could do the same transition with 2 photons. It was found that 1500 nm could produce more efficient red emission due to the 4I9/2 …

A Phenomenological Study Of Teachers' Perceptions Of Kindergarten Retention: Are Standards To Be Blamed?, Ginger Delaigle

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Currently there are a number of Kindergarten students who are being retained for not mastering Common Core State Standards. One of the methods that teachers can use to support Kindergarten students in achieving these standards are Developmentally Appropriate Practices. The exploration of the perceptions of teachers who have experienced the phenomenon of retaining Kindergarten students served as the goal for this qualitative, phenomenological study. The results provided data for examination of the perceptions the teachers had with retaining Kindergarten students and their perceptions of the developmental appropriateness of the Common Core State Standards. Four Kindergarten teachers participated in three interviews …

Combinatorial Optimization Of Subsequence Patterns In Words, Matthew R. Just Jan 2016

Combinatorial Optimization Of Subsequence Patterns In Words, Matthew R. Just

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Packing patterns in words concerns finding a word with the maximum number of a prescribed pattern. The majority of the work done thus far is on packing patterns into permutations. In 2002, Albert, Atkinson, Handley, Holton and Stromquist showed that there always exists a layered permutation containing the maximum number of a layered pattern among all permutations of length n. Consequently, the packing density for all but two (up to equivalence) permutation patterns up to length 4 can be obtained. In this thesis we consider the analogous question for colored patterns and permutations. By introducing the concept of colored blocks …

Exploring Students’ Perceptions Of The Connection Between Personal Effort And Academic Performance, Kimberly Kinsey Mannahan, Jennifer P. Gray Dec 2015

Exploring Students’ Perceptions Of The Connection Between Personal Effort And Academic Performance, Kimberly Kinsey Mannahan, Jennifer P. Gray

Georgia Educational Researcher

The goal of this study was to explore the relationship between students’ perceptions of the link between personal effort and academic performance to promote effective pedagogy, contributing to the potential for increased retention/progression/graduation rates. Based on Treisman’s (2013) assertion that students do not connect hard work with success, the researchers hypothesized that students would fail to connect the level of effort (as measured by motivation, effort, attendance, attention/engagement, and reading the textbook) they invested in a course with performance in the course (as measured by expected course grade). A mixed-methods survey containing both quantitative and qualitative measures of effort was …

Entropyexplorer: An R Package For Computing And Comparing Differential Shannon Entropy, Kai Wang, Charles A. Philips, Arnold M. Saxton, Michael A. Langston

Computing: Faculty Publications

Background: Differential Shannon entropy (DSE) and differential coefficient of variation (DCV) are effective metrics for the study of gene expression data. They can serve to augment differential expression (DE), and be applied in numerous settings whenever one seeks to measure differences in variability rather than mere differences in magnitude. A general purpose, easily accessible tool for DSE and DCV would help make these two metrics available to data scientists. Automated p value computations would additionally be useful, and are often easier to interpret than raw test statistic values alone.

Results: EntropyExplorer is an R package for calculating DSE, DCV and …

Correction Of Verication Bias Using Log-Linear Models For A Single Binaryscale Diagnostic Tests, Haresh Rochani, Hani M. Samawi, Robert L. Vogel, Jingjing Yin

Biostatistics: Faculty Publications

In diagnostic medicine, the test that determines the true disease status without an error is referred to as the gold standard. Even when a gold standard exists, it is extremely difficult to verify each patient due to the issues of costeffectiveness and invasive nature of the procedures. In practice some of the patients with test results are not selected for verification of the disease status which results in verification bias for diagnostic tests. The ability of the diagnostic test to correctly identify the patients with and without the disease can be evaluated by measures such as sensitivity, specificity and predictive …

Extended Lindley Poisson Distribution, Mavis Pararai, Gayan Warahena-Liyanage, Broderick O. Oluyede

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

The Extended Lindley Poisson (ELP) distribution which is an extension of the extended Lindley distribution [2] is introduced and its properties are explored. This new distribution represents a more flexible model for the lifetime data. Some statistical properties of the proposed distribution including the shapes of the density, hazard rate functions, moments, Bonferroni and Lorenz curves are explored. Entropy measures and the distribution of the order statistics are given. The maximum likelihood estimation technique is used to estimate the model parameters and a simulation study is conducted to investigate the performance of the maximum likelihood estimates. Finally, we present applications …

How To Sustain Excellence: Reigniting Your Mojo, Dr. Laurel Kinard, Jaime Espinosa, Kelly Mcnabb Nov 2015

How To Sustain Excellence: Reigniting Your Mojo, Dr. Laurel Kinard, Jaime Espinosa, Kelly Mcnabb

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

Sustainability is a widely recognized and researched component for continued positive outcomes of a school or district’s implementation of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). Many schools and districts find that around two years after initial implementation, sometimes even with past positive outcomes, implementation efforts can lose effectiveness and teams lose momentum. Data may show that schools are implementing with poor fidelity or focusing on only limited elements of the PBIS framework. Drawing on the body of published research, knowledge and tools, two large school districts in the metropolitan Atlanta area collaborated in their efforts to reignite the commitment and …

Monitoring For Adverse Events Post Marketing Approval Of Drugs, Karl E. Peace, Macaulay Okwuokenye Nov 2015

Monitoring For Adverse Events Post Marketing Approval Of Drugs, Karl E. Peace, Macaulay Okwuokenye

Biostatistics: Faculty Publications

This brief communication provides information to those developing monitoring plans for serious adverse events (SAE’s) following regulatory approval of a new drug. In addition, we (1) illustrate how many patients would need to be treated in order to have high confidence of seeing at least 1 pre-specified SAE, (2) show that absence of proof of a SAE is not proof of absence of that SAE, and (3) identify statistical methodology that could be used for formal statistical monitoring of SAE’s.

Molecular Gas And Star Formation In The Cartwheel, James L. Higdon, Sarah J.U. Higdon, Sergio Martín Ruiz, Richard J. Rand

Physics & Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array 12CO(J = 1–0) observations are used to study the cold molecular ISM of the Cartwheel ring galaxy and its relation to H i and massive star formation (SF). CO moment maps find (2.69 ± 0.05) × 109 M⊙ of H2 associated with the inner ring (72%) and nucleus (28%) for a Galactic ICO-to- conversion factor (αCO). The spokes and disk are not detected. Analysis of the inner ring's CO kinematics shows it to be expanding (Vexp = 68.9 ± 4.9 km s−1), implying an ≈70 Myr age. Stack averaging …

Tight Super-Edge-Graceful Labelings Of Trees And Their Applications, Alex Collins, Colton Magnant, Hua Wang Nov 2015

Tight Super-Edge-Graceful Labelings Of Trees And Their Applications, Alex Collins, Colton Magnant, Hua Wang

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

The concept of graceful labeling of graphs has been extensively studied. In 1994, Mitchem and Simoson introduced a stronger concept called super-edge-graceful labeling for some classes of graphs. Among many other interesting pioneering results, Mitchem and Simoson provided a simple but powerful recursive way of constructing super-edge-graceful trees of odd order. In this note, we present a stronger concept of “tight” super-edge-graceful labeling. Such a super-edge graceful labeling has an additional constraint on the edge and vertices with the largest and smallest labels. This concept enables us to recursively construct tight super-edge-graceful trees of any order. As applications, we provide …
