Dynamic Batching For Order Picking In Warehouses, Jelmer Pier Van Der Gaast, Bolor Jargalsaikhan, Kees Jan Roodbergen Jan 2018

Dynamic Batching For Order Picking In Warehouses, Jelmer Pier Van Der Gaast, Bolor Jargalsaikhan, Kees Jan Roodbergen

15th IMHRC Proceedings (Savannah, Georgia. USA – 2018)

Dynamic batch picking is characterized by combining product demand from multiple customer orders into one pick tour where new orders are continuously received. Using modern order-picking aids, updated picking instructions can be included in the current pick tours which allows pickers to be re-routed to pick for new orders even when they already started a pick tour. We develop a mathematical model for dynamic batch picking that minimizes the order throughput time of incoming customer orders. In case of new order arrivals, we can quickly re-optimize the model and determine new updated pick tours. This allows for short order throughput …

Evaluating Blended And Flipped Instruction In Numerical Methods At Multiple Engineering Schools, Renee Clark, Autar Kaw, Yingyan Lou, Andrew Scott, Mary Besterfield-Sacre

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

With the literature calling for comparisons among technology-enhanced or active-learning pedagogies, a blended versus flipped instructional comparison was made for numerical methods coursework using three engineering schools with diverse student demographics. This study contributes to needed comparisons of enhanced instructional approaches in STEM and presents a rigorous and adaptable methodology for doing so. Our flipped classroom consisted mostly of in-class active learning, with micro-lectures as needed, and technology used both in and out of class, including for expected pre-class review of new content. Our blended classroom consisted mostly of lecture with some in-class active learning, and technology utilized both in …

Assessing Peer Leader Skill Acquisition And Group Dynamics In A First-Year Calculus Course, Rebecca Glover, Nicholas B. Hammond, Justin Smith, Dalyana Guerra

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Peer-led team learning (PLTL), specifically the model known as ‘Workshops’, has been shown to contribute positively and significantly to student success in STEM courses across subjects (Gosser et al., 2001). Our research adds to the SOTL literature describing the effectiveness of Workshops by reporting on the changes in student leaders. We examine the level to which leaders acquired new skills in effective teaching and describe the pedagogical interactions in the groups they led as a result of the combination of training and experience facilitating first-year Calculus Workshop sections. This was a semester-long study on twenty-two Workshop leaders for two multi-section, …

Sparse Trees With A Given Degree Sequence, Ao Shen Jan 2018

Sparse Trees With A Given Degree Sequence, Ao Shen

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis, we consider the properties of sparse trees and summarized a certain class of trees under some constraint (including with a given degree sequence, with given number of leaves, with given maximum degree, etc.) which have maximum Wiener index and the minimum number of subtrees at the same time. Wiener index is one of the most important topological indices in chemical graph theory. Steiner k Wiener index can be regarded as the generalization of Wiener index, when k = 2, Steiner Wiener index is the same as Wiener index. Steiner k Wiener index of a tree T is …

A Motion Capture System Framework For The Study Of Human Manufacturing Repetitive Motions, Francis Mendez, David Wierschem, Jesus Jimenez

15th IMHRC Proceedings (Savannah, Georgia. USA – 2018)

Our research proposes a framework to obtain and analyze real time data concerning the dynamic and natural motion of individuals in manufacturing-like processes that involve human labor. The framework that we propose consists of five main components: a tracking system, a system of sensors, a processor that collects time series data, data processing and discovery module, and an alert or reporting component. Using motion capture cameras, data is collected on a variety of human subjects performing simulated labor-intensive manufacturing operations. This data is analyzed for identification of actual and optimal activity motions. This project has significant potential impact for contribution …

Digital Design Of Intralogistics Systems: Flexible And Agile Solution To Short-Cyclic Fluctuations, Anike Murrenhoff, Christoph Pott, Moritz Wernecke, Philipp-Akira Burger Jan 2018

Digital Design Of Intralogistics Systems: Flexible And Agile Solution To Short-Cyclic Fluctuations, Anike Murrenhoff, Christoph Pott, Moritz Wernecke, Philipp-Akira Burger

15th IMHRC Proceedings (Savannah, Georgia. USA – 2018)

In times of fast-paced, fluctuating and individual markets, intralogistics systems, such as warehouses, have to adapt to the resulting volatile performance demands dynamically. Hybrid systems, in which humans and machines work together efficiently and communicate in socio-technical networks, can be the answer to manage these high-frequency markets. Hybrid systems of the future need to adapt frequently and permanent change becomes the “new normal”. A one-time planning of warehousing systems upon first installation becomes obsolete. This results in the question of how to design and implement processes for future logistics systems in an agile way in order to exploit the flexibility …

Generalized Matching Preclusion In Bipartite Graphs, Zachary Wheeler, Eddie Cheng, Dana Ferranti, Laszlo Liptak, Karthik Nataraj Jan 2018

Generalized Matching Preclusion In Bipartite Graphs, Zachary Wheeler, Eddie Cheng, Dana Ferranti, Laszlo Liptak, Karthik Nataraj

Theory & Applications of Graphs

The matching preclusion number of a graph with an even number of vertices is the minimum number of edges whose deletion results in a graph that has no perfect matchings. For many interconnection networks, the optimal such sets are precisely sets of edges incident to a single vertex. The conditional matching preclusion number of a graph was introduced to look for obstruction sets beyond these, and it is defined as the minimum number of edges whose deletion results in a graph with neither isolated vertices nor perfect matchings. In this paper we generalize this concept to get a hierarchy of …

A General Lower Bound On Gallai-Ramsey Numbers For Non-Bipartite Graphs, Colton Magnant Jan 2018

A General Lower Bound On Gallai-Ramsey Numbers For Non-Bipartite Graphs, Colton Magnant

Theory & Applications of Graphs

Given a graph H and a positive integer k, the k-color Gallai-Ramsey number grk(K3 : H) is defined to be the minimum number of vertices n for which any k-coloring of the complete graph Kn contains either a rainbow triangle or a monochromatic copy of H. The behavior of these numbers is rather well understood when H is bipartite but when H is not bipartite, this behavior is a bit more complicated. In this short note, we improve upon existing lower bounds for non-bipartite graphs H to a value that we conjecture to …

On The Planarity Of Generalized Line Graphs, Khawlah H. Alhulwah, Mohra Zayed, Ping Zhang Jan 2018

On The Planarity Of Generalized Line Graphs, Khawlah H. Alhulwah, Mohra Zayed, Ping Zhang

Theory & Applications of Graphs

One of the most familiar derived graphs is the line graph. The line graph L(G) of a graph G is that graph whose vertices are the edges of G where two vertices of L(G) are adjacent if the corresponding edges are adjacent in G. Two nontrivial paths P and Q in a graph G are said to be adjacent paths in G if P and Q have exactly one vertex in common and this vertex is an end-vertex of both P and Q. For an integer ℓ ≥ 2, the ℓ -line graph Lℓ (G) of a …

Augmented Reality Chemistry: Transforming 2-D Molecular Representations Into Interactive 3-D Structures, Derek Behmke, David Kerven, Robert Lutz, Julia Paredes, Richard Pennington, Evelyn Brannock, Michael Deiters, John Rose, Kevin Stevens

Proceedings of the Interdisciplinary STEM Teaching & Learning Conference (Archived)

Spatial reasoning is defined as the ability to generate, retain, and manipulate abstract visual images. In chemistry, spatial reasoning skills are typically taught using 2-D paper-based models, 3-D handheld models, and computerized models. These models are designed to aid student learning by integrating information from the macroscopic, microscopic, and symbolic domains of chemistry. Research has shown that increased spatial reasoning abilities translate directly to improved content knowledge. The recent explosion in the popularity of smartphones and the development of augmented reality apps for them provide, a yet to be explored, way of teaching spatial reasoning skills to chemistry students. Augmented …

Using Google Forms To Inform Teaching Practices, Ha Nguyen, Eryn M. Stehr, Heidi Eisenreich, Tuyin An

Proceedings of the Interdisciplinary STEM Teaching & Learning Conference (Archived)

Kay and LeSage (2009) conducted a literature review of research on use of student response systems in university courses (typically Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics courses) and categorized benefits into classroom environment, learning, and assessment. The objectives of the proposed session are to discuss how using Google Forms will benefit those three above categories. Examples of Google Forms used to gather data, receive in-the-moment feedback to students and instructors, engage students’ learning, and assess their learning will be shared throughout the paper. Limitations of Google Forms will also be discussed. This session can be beneficial to all K-College educators.

Encouraging Teacher Candidates To Cultivate Habits Of Reflection, Amanda Wall

Middle Grades & Secondary Education: Faculty Publications

The conceptual framework for the College of Education at Georgia Southern University is: Reflective Practitioners for a Diverse World. Three of the five Middle Level Teacher Preparation Standards from the Association of Middle Level Education (AMLE, 2012) also specify reflection as a habit. Standard 5 on Middle Level Professional Roles, for example, states: “Middle level teacher candidates understand, reflect on, and are successful in their unique roles as middle level professionals.” In order for teacher candidates to become reflective, they need multiple opportunities to engage in reflection.

From Worldviews To Classrooms: Framing Evolution Acceptance In Pre-Service Science Teachers In The Southeastern United States, Amanda Glaze Jan 2018

From Worldviews To Classrooms: Framing Evolution Acceptance In Pre-Service Science Teachers In The Southeastern United States, Amanda Glaze

Georgia Educational Researcher

Research demonstrates that teachers' acceptance or rejection of evolution impacts whether they teach evolution in their classrooms. Furthermore, factors such as religiosity and nature of science understanding impact acceptance or rejection. What is absent from the literature is an exploration of experiences that inform choices made regarding acceptance or rejection, experiences that illuminate the counter-intuitive relationships demonstrated in quantitative studies. For this reason, we explore the lived experiences that inform the worldviews of Pre-Service Secondary Science Teachers (PSSTs) and how those worldviews might inform their acceptance or rejection of evolution. Coding and pattern analysis informed themes within the data explaining …

The Effects Of Preceding Stimuli Formats On Proportional Reasoning Ability In Elementary School Students, Natalie D. Branch Jan 2018

The Effects Of Preceding Stimuli Formats On Proportional Reasoning Ability In Elementary School Students, Natalie D. Branch

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The National Mathematics Advisory Panel (2008) described fraction knowledge as the most important, yet most underdeveloped foundational skill among students. Due to the complex nature of fraction education, this study sought to understand the underlying fraction problem-solving skill of proportional reasoning in the hopes of gaining insight into children’s problem-solving strategies in order to implement more focused educational designs. The current study examined the effects of stimuli formats on children’s proportional reasoning ability by presenting four conditions involving two formats (continuous and discrete). Previous research indicates that students perform better on continuous stimuli and the goal of this study was …

The survey …

Multiclass Classification Using Support Vector Machines, Duleep Prasanna W. Rathgamage Don Jan 2018

Multiclass Classification Using Support Vector Machines, Duleep Prasanna W. Rathgamage Don

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis, we discuss different SVM methods for multiclass classification and introduce the Divide and Conquer Support Vector Machine (DCSVM) algorithm which relies on data sparsity in high dimensional space and performs a smart partitioning of the whole training data set into disjoint subsets that are easily separable. A single prediction performed between two partitions eliminates one or more classes in a single partition, leaving only a reduced number of candidate classes for subsequent steps. The algorithm continues recursively, reducing the number of classes at each step until a final binary decision is made between the last two classes …

A Survey Of Clustering Analysis And Clustering Analysis In Graphs, Raven D. Gilmore Jan 2018

A Survey Of Clustering Analysis And Clustering Analysis In Graphs, Raven D. Gilmore

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Clustering analysis is an important topic in data mining, where data points that are similar to each other are grouped together. Graph clustering deals with clustering analysis of data points that correspond to vertices on a graph. We first survey some most well known algorithms for clustering analysis. Then for graph clustering we note that one of the fundamental factors is the distance measure between vertices. We further examine various known venues for defining such measures and propose some others.

Producing Smooth Flow In Atom Circuits By Stirring, Olatunde Oladehin Jan 2018

Producing Smooth Flow In Atom Circuits By Stirring, Olatunde Oladehin

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

We studied how smooth flow can be produced by stirring an ultracold atom circuit consisting of a gaseous Bose--Einstein condensate (BEC) confined in a ``racetrack'' potential. The racetrack potential was made up of two straight parallel channels of length L connected on both ends by semicircular channels of the same width and (energy) depth as the straightaways. We used the Gross--Pitaevskii equation to simulate the behavior of the BEC in this potential when stirred by a rectangular paddle at various speeds and barrier heights. We found that smooth flow could be produced and conducted a systematic study of the flow …
