An Efficient Algorithm To Test Forcibly-Connectedness Of Graphical Degree Sequences, Kai Wang Jul 2018

An Efficient Algorithm To Test Forcibly-Connectedness Of Graphical Degree Sequences, Kai Wang

Theory & Applications of Graphs

We present an algorithm to test whether a given graphical degree sequence is forcibly connected or not and prove its correctness. We also outline the extensions of the algorithm to test whether a given graphical degree sequence is forcibly k-connected or not for every fixed k ≥ 2. We show through experimental evaluations that the algorithm is efficient on average, though its worst case run time is probably exponential. We also adapt Ruskey et al's classic algorithm to enumerate zero-free graphical degree sequences of length n and Barnes and Savage's classic algorithm to enumerate graphical partitions of even integer …

Finite Asymptotic Clusters Of Metric Spaces, Viktoriia Bilet, Oleksiy Dovgoshey Jul 2018

Finite Asymptotic Clusters Of Metric Spaces, Viktoriia Bilet, Oleksiy Dovgoshey

Theory & Applications of Graphs

Let (X, d) be an unbounded metric space and let \tilde r=(r_n)_{n\in\mathbb N} be a sequence of positive real numbers tending to infinity. A pretangent space \Omega_{\infty, \tilde r}^{X} to (X, d) at infinity is a limit of the rescaling sequence \left(X, \frac{1}{r_n}d\right). The set of all pretangent spaces \Omega_{\infty, \tilde r}^{X} is called an asymptotic cluster of pretangent spaces. Such a cluster can be considered as a weighted graph (G_{X, \tilde r}, \rho_{X}) whose maximal cliques coincide with \Omega_{\infty, \tilde r}^{X} and the weight \rho_{X} is defined by metrics on \Omega_{\infty, \tilde r}^{X}. We describe the structure …

Student Resistance To Collaborative Learning, Sheri Stover, Cindra Holland Jul 2018

Student Resistance To Collaborative Learning, Sheri Stover, Cindra Holland

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The advancing complexity of today’s corporate environment requires that employees are able to collaborate in the workplace. This mixed methods research study follows a nursing faculty’s efforts to incorporate collaborative learning (CL) into an introductory nursing class. The mixed-methods research study found that while students’ final grades improved in the initial CL flipped classroom design (p < .0005), their levels of student resistance deepened which resulted in significantly lower levels of community of inquiry (p = .004), lower levels of satisfaction, and many negative open-ended comments (83%). Using Tolman and Kreming’s (2017) integrated model of student resistance (IMSR) as a guideline, the instructor was successful in redesigning the CL class to overcome students’ resistance as measured by …

How Novice Researchers See Themselves Grow, Prajukti Bhattacharyya, Catherine W.M. Chan, Meg Waraczynski Jul 2018

How Novice Researchers See Themselves Grow, Prajukti Bhattacharyya, Catherine W.M. Chan, Meg Waraczynski

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Engaging in undergraduate research is identified as a High Impact Practice (HIP), an experience that improves student learning outcomes. In this paper, we report the differences in the relative rates of increase in skill and knowledge gains associated with early engagement in undergraduate research from students who have little to no prior research experience. We studied the relative rates of changes in novice researchers’ perceptions of the progressive development of different research-related skills and conceptual understandings of their own projects, as well as how their attitudes, such as confidence in their own abilities as researchers, develop with continuous participation in …

The Teaching-Research Nexus: Perceptions Of Exchange Students In The United States And United Kingdom, Barry J. Griffiths Jul 2018

The Teaching-Research Nexus: Perceptions Of Exchange Students In The United States And United Kingdom, Barry J. Griffiths

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

An extensive amount of study in recent years has focused on the relationship between teaching and research among academic staff, with many concluding that an environment of increased scrutiny and assessment has tilted the priority towards research. Few studies have looked at how students perceive the teaching-research nexus, and this paper offers a new perspective on the issue by considering the perceptions of exchange students from the United States and the United Kingdom.

Data was collected by conducting in-depth interviews with twelve multidisciplinary students representing eight universities in the two countries, and an analysis conducted according to established phenomenological principles. …

Exploring Differences In Decisions About Exams Among Instructors Of The Same Introductory Biology Course, Christian D. Wright, Austin L. Huang, Katelyn M. Cooper, Sara E. Brownell Jul 2018

Exploring Differences In Decisions About Exams Among Instructors Of The Same Introductory Biology Course, Christian D. Wright, Austin L. Huang, Katelyn M. Cooper, Sara E. Brownell

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

College instructors in the United States usually make their own decisions about how to design course exams. Even though summative course exams are well known to be important to student success, we know little about the decision making of instructors when designing course exams. To probe how instructors design exams for introductory biology, we conducted an exploratory interview study with seven instructors teaching the same introductory biology course at a large university. We found that despite designing exams for the same course, instructor exam decisions differed with regard to what content was assessed, the exam format, the cognitive difficulty of …

Teaching The Monty Hall Dilemma To Explore Decision-Making, Probability, And Regret In Behavioral Science Classrooms, Kevin L. Bennett Jul 2018

Teaching The Monty Hall Dilemma To Explore Decision-Making, Probability, And Regret In Behavioral Science Classrooms, Kevin L. Bennett

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The Monty Hall Dilemma (MHD), made famous by the television game show Let’s Make a Deal, can be an effective teaching tool with wide ranging behavioral science applications. The format and history of the problem are presented as well as experimental data and variations on the original design. Strategic game playing choices are discussed from several perspectives including statistics, decision making, social and personality psychology, and cognitive functioning. Because the classroom exercise is engaging and counterintuitive, it challenges students to generate explanatory ideas that draw from multiple perspectives. It exemplifies the type of detective work and creative thinking that …

Three Approaches To Focusing Peer Feedback, Daniel L. Reinholz Jul 2018

Three Approaches To Focusing Peer Feedback, Daniel L. Reinholz

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Peer assessment has great potential to improve student learning. However, assessment is not an everyday activity for students, and thus providing appropriate guidance to students is a key component of creating a successful peer assessment experience. This paper explores how to structure peer feedback in the guided process Peer-Assisted Reflection (PAR), by comparing the artifacts and practices associated with three different iterations of PAR in undergraduate calculus. The iterations are referred to as the Questions, Critique, and Balanced approaches. Through a detailed analysis of this design-based research project, new insights are generated about how particular artifacts shape the feedback provided …

New Perspective On Tpack Framework In The Context Of Early Childhood Education: The “A” Stands For Affective, Elizabeth K. Park, Jace Hargis Jul 2018

New Perspective On Tpack Framework In The Context Of Early Childhood Education: The “A” Stands For Affective, Elizabeth K. Park, Jace Hargis

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The purpose of this exploratory single-case study is to investigate the affordances of iPad transpired within a technological pedagogical and content knowledge (TPACK) framework by four early childhood educators with varying Technological Knowledge (TK) at a low-income preschool. Pre/post and follow-up survey, group and follow-up interviews, classroom observations and document of iPad workshop data were analyzed using coding methods in two cycles. The exploration in how teachers discovered the iPad affordances indicated parallel progression in TK and change in their value system. The exploration in the progression of TK and change in their value system suggest a relationship between progression …

From Fact To Fiction: The Wuxia Experience And The Wushu Practice, Kadien S. Hill Jun 2018

From Fact To Fiction: The Wuxia Experience And The Wushu Practice, Kadien S. Hill

Honors College Theses

Since its beginnings in China, martial arts have intrigued people with its mastery over mind and body, from the Shaolin monk practices of hand-to-hand combat and body conditioning to folktales of martial heroes with their mastery of swordplay and their almost superhuman-like fighting abilities. Martial arts have fascinated and astonished people in China for centuries, and since their introduction to the West they have captivated other cultures the world over. Their intrigue has caused them to penetrate entertainment circles through novelization early on. Chinese classics such as Water Margin and The Seven Heroes and the Five Gallants solidified martial arts …

Special Education Teachers' Response To Consistent Changes In Curriculum Standards, Megan Fromme Jun 2018

Special Education Teachers' Response To Consistent Changes In Curriculum Standards, Megan Fromme

Honors College Theses

This research explored how the changing standards have influenced special education teachers’ efforts to meet the needs of their students, and the teachers’ perceptions of the consistent changes in standards. A narrative, qualitative design was used, which involved eight participant interviews. In each interview, the participants answered questions pertaining to their level of comfort teaching the Common Core Standards and Georgia Standards of Excellence, whether or not they received professional development on the standards, and what they think of the new standards. Currently, there is a paucity of research regarding teacher’s perspectives on curriculum standards, and this research project fills …

Presence Of Antibiotic-Resistant Escherichia Coli In Wastewater Treatment Plant Effluents Utilized As Water Reuse For Irrigation, Asli Aslan, Zach A. Coles, Anunay Bhattacharya, Oghenekpaobor Oyibo Jun 2018

Presence Of Antibiotic-Resistant Escherichia Coli In Wastewater Treatment Plant Effluents Utilized As Water Reuse For Irrigation, Asli Aslan, Zach A. Coles, Anunay Bhattacharya, Oghenekpaobor Oyibo

Biostatistics, Epidemiology & Environmental Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

Providing safe water through water reuse is becoming a global necessity. One concern with water reuse is the introduction of unregulated contaminants to the environment that cannot be easily removed by conventional wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). The occurrence of ampicillin, sulfamethoxazole, ciprofloxacin, and tetracycline-resistant Escherichia coli through the treatment stages of a WWTP (raw sewage, post-secondary, post-UV and post-chlorination) was investigated from January to May 2016. The highest concentrations of antibiotic resistant E. coli in the effluent were detected in April after rainfall. Ampicillin-resistant E. coli was the most common at the post UV and chlorination stages comprising 63% of …

Gamma-Realizability And Other Musings On Inverse Domination, John Asplund, Joe Chaffee, James M. Hammer Iii, Matt Noble Jun 2018

Gamma-Realizability And Other Musings On Inverse Domination, John Asplund, Joe Chaffee, James M. Hammer Iii, Matt Noble

Theory & Applications of Graphs

We introduce and study γ-realizable sequences. For a finite, simple graph G containing no isolated vertices, I ⊆ V(G) is said to be an inverse dominating set if I dominates all of G and I is contained by the complement of some minimum dominating set D. Define a sequence of positive integers (x1,…, xn) to be γ-realizable if there exists a graph G having exactly n distinct minimum dominating sets D1,… Dn where for each i ∈ {1,… n}, the minimum size of an inverse dominating set in V(G) …
