Exploring Tiers Of Vocabulary In Mathematics (Elementary), Janel Smith
Exploring Tiers Of Vocabulary In Mathematics (Elementary), Janel Smith
Empowering Educators Conference
Across Georgia, teachers are working to implement the basics of the Science of Reading across all disciplines - including mathematics. A key component of the shifts focuses on vocabulary instruction that is developmentally appropriate to all learners.
In this session, participants will explore vocabulary terms from mathematics content through the organizational framework of tiered vocabulary (Beck, McKeown, Kucan, 2013). Along with a discussion of the use of this framework, several instructional strategies will be modeled and practiced.
This session is focused on elementary-level instruction.

Exploring Place Value & Making Algebra Concrete (Make And Take, Elementary & Middle/ Secondary)), Janel Smith, Alesia Moldavan
Empowering Educators Conference
Students often learn to navigate place value operations through algorithms and "moving the decimal". But what does this mean to students? How does this build conceptual understanding of the topic?
In this session, participants will learn about support for teaching place value in the elementary classroom. This session will be hands-on and allow participants to take materials back to their school.

Exploring Predictive Modeling For Food Quality Enhancement: A Case Study On Wine, Cemil Emre Yavas, Jongyeop Kim, Lei Chen, Christopher Kadlec, Yiming Ji
Computing: Faculty Publications
What makes a wine exceptional enough to score a perfect 10 from experts? This study explores a data-driven approach to identify the ideal physicochemical composition for wines that could achieve this highest possible rating. Using a dataset of 11 measurable attributes, including alcohol, sulfates, residual sugar, density, and citric acid, for wines rated up to a maximum quality score of 8 by expert tasters, we sought to predict compositions that might enhance wine quality beyond current observations. Our methodology applies a second-degree polynomial ridge regression model, optimized through an exhaustive evaluation of feature combinations. Furthermore, we propose a specific chemical …
Face-Magic Labelings Of Polygonal Graphs, Wai Chee Shiu, Richard M. Low, Andy K. Liu
Face-Magic Labelings Of Polygonal Graphs, Wai Chee Shiu, Richard M. Low, Andy K. Liu
Theory & Applications of Graphs
For a plane graph $G = (V, E)$ embedded in $\mathbb{R}^2$, let $\mathcal{F}(G)$ denote the set of faces of $G$. Then, $G$ is called a \textit{$C_n$-face-magic graph} if there exists a bijection $f: V(G) \to \{1, 2, \dots, |V(G)|\}$ such that for any $F \in \mathcal{F}(G)$ with $F \cong C_n$, the sum of all the vertex labels along $C_n$ is a constant $c$. In this paper, we investigate face-magic labelings of polygonal graphs.
A Characterization Of Chordal Graph Without Sun And Co-Rising Sun As Convex Geometry, Silvia B. Tondato
A Characterization Of Chordal Graph Without Sun And Co-Rising Sun As Convex Geometry, Silvia B. Tondato
Theory & Applications of Graphs
In this paper we introduce the notion of $t_3$ \textit{convexity}, a natural restriction of triangle convexity. A \textit{triangle path} is a path allowing just short chords. A triangle path $P$ between two non-adjacent vertices in a graph $G$ is called $t_3$ \textit{path} if the first vertex of $P$ is among vertices from $P$ adjacent only to the second vertex of $P$, and the last vertex of $P$ is among vertices from $P$ adjacent only to the second-last vertex of $P$. A set $S \subseteq V(G)$ is $t_3$ \textit{convex} if for any two non-adjacent vertices $x, y \in S$ any vertex …

Failed Zero Forcing Numbers Of Trees And Circulant Graphs, Luis Gomez, Karla Rubi, Jorden Terrazas, Rigoberto Florez, Darren A. Narayan
Theory & Applications of Graphs
Given a graph $G$, the zero forcing number of $G$, $Z(G)$, is the smallest cardinality of any set $S$ of vertices on which repeated applications of the forcing rule (described below) results in all vertices being in $S$. The forcing rule is as follows: if a vertex $v$ is in $S$, and exactly one neighbor $u$ of $v$ is not in $S$, then $u$ is added to $S$ in the next iteration. Zero forcing numbers have attracted great interest over the past 15 years and have been well studied. The zero forcing number is used to study the maximum nullity/minimum …

Evaluating Spatiotemporal Vegetation Index Variation To Detect Salt Marsh Dieback On The Georgia Coast, Emmanuella Bosompemaa Obeng
Evaluating Spatiotemporal Vegetation Index Variation To Detect Salt Marsh Dieback On The Georgia Coast, Emmanuella Bosompemaa Obeng
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Salt marshes, essential for coastal protection and carbon sequestration, are increasingly vulnerable to dieback events, threatening ecosystem resilience and vital services. Detecting these shifts early is essential for timely intervention. However, few studies have applied Early Warning Signals (EWS) to coastal marsh systems. Most EWS research has focused on lakes, forests, or climate tipping points, with limited application to salt marsh dieback in the southeastern U.S. Site-specific, long-term spatial analyses are also lacking, as prior work often examines short time frames or single disturbance events. This study investigates the spatiotemporal patterns of salt marsh dieback on the Georgia coast from …

The development of automated warehouse systems has been driven by advancements in computing, communication, and control technologies. However, throughput models and guidelines often lag behind industrial implementation. This paper analyzes the historical progression of automated warehouse systems, highlighting the decades-long gap between system realization and model development. By classifying storage technologies and tracing their evolution, we emphasize the need for systematic methodologies to accelerate throughput modeling, ensuring that performance evaluation keeps pace with innovation in warehouse automation.

Teacher Attrition During And After A Pandemic: A District’S ‘New Normal’ View, Tammy H. Jacobs
Teacher Attrition During And After A Pandemic: A District’S ‘New Normal’ View, Tammy H. Jacobs
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Teacher attrition has long been a concern in the K-12 educational sector, driven by various factors such as low salaries, lack of administrative support, increased teacher workload and responsibilities, and teacher stress and burnout. When the COVID-19 pandemic struck in March 2020, these existing pressures intensified. The abrupt transition to remote learning placed additional stress on teachers, who had to rapidly adapt their teaching strategies and engage students in virtual learning environments. As educators faced heightened expectations and were given additional duties, many chose to leave the profession entirely or retire early, exacerbating the ongoing teacher shortage. The combination of …

Investigating Concealments In Infanticide: Incidents And Forensic Entomological Implications, Gillian L. Johnson
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Forensic entomology plays a critical role in estimating the minimum postmortem interval (mPMIs), based on insect evidence. When victims are concealed, this can complicate mPMI estimates. Utilizing data from the National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS) from 2018 to 2021, I found that victims of infanticides and neonaticides are often concealed. I first investigated the demographics of offenders and victims, how often victims are concealed, and the most common means of concealment. I found that victims of infanticide were likely to be concealed 5% of the time, and neonaticides 50% of the time. Next, I investigated how concealment alters insect …
Comparative Analysis Of Eye-Metric Algorithms For Code Comprehension In Introductory Cs Course, Noushin Gauhar
Comparative Analysis Of Eye-Metric Algorithms For Code Comprehension In Introductory Cs Course, Noushin Gauhar
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Eye-tracking technology offers a non-intrusive way to study cognitive processes by tracking where and how long individuals look. In computer science education, it provides valuable insights into how students understand source code—a task that requires intense visual and mental effort. This study investigates how eye-tracking can reveal differences in code comprehension strategies among students in an Introductory Programming course. By analyzing three key metrics—dwell time, gaze entropy, and the K coefficient—the research explores how students engage with code. Dwell time indicates cognitive focus on specific code elements, the K coefficient measures attentional shifts between scanning and focused reading, and gaze …

Synthesis Of Tu100 Analogs And Biological Assays, Feyisope Tonye Oladapo
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
TU100 (14-methyl-5H-5,12-epiminobenzo[4,5]cyclohepta[1,2-b]naphthalene-6,11,13(12H)-trione) exhibits exceptional chemotherapeutic properties. It operates via a distinct mechanism that triggers cell death to create cytotoxic effects while concurrently inhibiting topoisomerase I and II. Its efficacy rivals that of well-known chemotherapeutic drugs like Daunorubicin. The distinctive characteristics of TU100 have led to initiatives aimed at creating structurally similar compounds to discover even more effective bioactive alternatives.
The analog synthesis incorporated quinoxaline or its derivatives (diphenyl quinoxaline, dipyridinyl quinoxaline, and dibenzophenazine-10,13-dione) that have been shown to have promising chemotherapeutic effects. Synthesizing the hetero naphthoquinones required a multi-step synthetic process, so quinoxaline/ derivatives intermediates are first prepared, then the …
Response Of Galactic Disks To Dark Matter Halo Triaxiality, Alex J. Hutton
Response Of Galactic Disks To Dark Matter Halo Triaxiality, Alex J. Hutton
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
In this study we examine the influence of dark matter halo triaxiality on the evolution of galactic disks. We do this by running a series of collisionless N-body models. In a first set of models we place the galactic disk within an oblate halo at various orientations and examine the resulting evolution. In our second set we construct fully self-consistent models of a stellar disk embedded within a spherical halo, with an impacting external dark matter dwarf galaxy. After evolving the simulations for a Hubble time, we examine the disk orientation and warping along with other quantities such as bar …
Majority Decision Using Top-Performing Neural Networks Models For Improved Credit Risk Prediction, Vincent Dey
Majority Decision Using Top-Performing Neural Networks Models For Improved Credit Risk Prediction, Vincent Dey
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Credit risk prediction remains both a challenging and high-interest problem due to the inherently unbalanced nature of financial datasets and the continuous drive for higher pre- dictive precision. In this work, I build upon previous advancements in credit risk modeling and introduce an ensemble-based Artificial Neural Network (ANN) architecture designed to enhance classification performance. By leveraging a selective ensemble of decision net- works, this approach not only improves prediction accuracy but also mitigates the chal- lenges posed by imbalanced data distributions. While the primary focus is on credit risk prediction, my analysis demonstrates that the proposed model can be effectively …

The current number of people in America with diabetes is approximately 38.4 million, that population is expected to rise to 54.9 million by 2030. Chronic wounds, which are characterized by impaired or stalled healing, are commonly associated with diabetes. These wounds if not treated properly can cause significant complications such as sepsis, infection, and gangrene which can lead to limb amputation or death of the patient. Limb amputations can be a large financial burden and significantly reduce the patient’s quality of life. The timely and efficient treatment of chronic wounds is essential to prevent adverse patient outcomes. Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy …
Embodied Mythology Of Rhetoric: The Dialectic Of The Gender Binary Logos, Isaac A. Lacap
Embodied Mythology Of Rhetoric: The Dialectic Of The Gender Binary Logos, Isaac A. Lacap
Honors College Theses
Gender is often described as a social construct. This description usually contrasts social construction with other unchanging, unambiguous concepts. Through Chiara Bottici's analysis, I argue the concept of myth breaks us from this dichotomy. By understanding myth as the persistent creation of significance through narratives, we no longer leave myth to the ambit of untruth and unreality. Instead, we see myths as a way to direct people’s actions by giving them a way to see the world. By integrating Bottici with Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology, I argue the significance of myth occurs through embodiment by organizing gestures. These gestures form a system …
