Explaining Dynamic Interactions In Wiki-Based Collaborative Writing, Mimi Li, Wei Zhu Aug 2016

Explaining Dynamic Interactions In Wiki-Based Collaborative Writing, Mimi Li, Wei Zhu

Writing & Linguistics: Faculty Publications (1990-2022)

This article reports a case study that examined dynamic patterns of interaction that two small groups of ESL students exemplified when they performed two writing tasks, i.e., Research Proposal (Task 1) and Annotated Bibliography (Task 2) in a wiki site. Group A demonstrated a Collective pattern in Task 1, but switched to an Active/Withdrawn pattern in Task 2. In contrast, Group B exhibited a Dominant/Defensive pattern in Task 1, but switched to a Collaborative one in Task 2. These patterns were substantiated by group members’ ongoing task approaches in terms of “equality” and “mutuality,” reflected via the analyses of language …

Voices From The Field, Lina B. Soares Jul 2016

Voices From The Field, Lina B. Soares

Georgia Educational Researcher

This research study sought to determine the impact from participation in a practicum field experience on teacher candidates’ perceived professional dispositions for effective teaching. A further intent was to describe what teacher candidates perceived to be the necessary professional dispositions for effective teaching as they reflected on their experiences in their particular preparation contexts. A mixed-methods sequential explanatory design was used to examine and understand the development of dispositions from pre-service teachers’ perspectives. The participants consisted of seventeen middle grade undergraduate students who completed over 200 hours of field experience while attending a mid-size university in the Southeastern region of …

Is Cultural Responsiveness Part Of Effective Teaching?: Preservice Teacher Perspectives, Yasar Bodur

Georgia Educational Researcher

The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which preservice elementary teachers integrated culturally responsive pedagogy into their perspectives on effective teaching and being an effective teacher and if these perspectives changed over time. Data were collected from 53 preservice teachers in the form of a perspective paper written in two consecutive semesters at the end of field experience courses. Data were analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. Findings indicated that preservice teacher integrated issues of cultural and linguistic diversity into their perspectives minimally. Linguistic diversity was more integrated than cultural diversity. Their perspectives included less integration of …

A Hopeful Pedagogy To Critical Thinking, Mark C. Nicholas, Miriam Raider-Roth Jul 2016

A Hopeful Pedagogy To Critical Thinking, Mark C. Nicholas, Miriam Raider-Roth

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Elements of what we are calling a “hopeful pedagogy” emerged when faculty reflected on the question - Do you think your current approach to develop CT in students is successful? Faculty across disciplines and institutions used the word “hope” to characterize the outcome of their efforts. While attempting to disentangle the “hopeful pedagogy”, we found answers in (a) how faculty defined CT in disciplinary and non-disciplinary contexts; (b) a misalignment between faculty and institutional approaches to CT; (c) a disconnect between faculty and their own approaches to CT, and (d) logistical and curricular issues within general education programs that placed …

The Transformative Linguistic Politics Of Mountain Language, Matthew Wentz Apr 2016

The Transformative Linguistic Politics Of Mountain Language, Matthew Wentz

GS4 Student Scholars Symposium

Although, as Robert Gordon observes, many critics view Harold Pinter’s political plays as simply didactic (163), his radical drama Mountain Language resists this perceived didacticism. This political play offers a nuanced understanding of how fascist bureaucracies manipulate language to authorize and authenticate violence against political subjects and how these subjects utilize language to resist governmental oppression. Employing Walter Benjamin’s theory that fascist states aestheticize politics, this essay argues that the fascist bureaucracy of Mountain Language aestheticizes language to justify and conceal its violence. In Mountain Language, anthropomorphism and offensive humor construct a dehumanizingly fascist aestheticization of language. Raymond Williams concept …
