The dynamics and complexities of building positive relationships with students are impacted when teachers’ attitudes, values, and biases conflict with school culture. Therefore, schools must learn as much about their students and their experiences as possible to create a culture built on relationships. This essay showcases the values, beliefs, and attitudes necessary to promote a nurturing culturally relevant learning environment which impacts student performance.

A Glance At Spark: Multiple Perspectives Of An Innovative Mentorship Program, Sungmin Park, Thomas Peterson

National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Journal

Youths from high-risk settings are often labeled based on their behavior, which leads to cycles of negative stigmatization and punitive interventions. Traditional behavioristic approaches used in schools, courts, and therapy have shown limited success in fostering long-term positive change. The SPARK mentoring program offers an innovative approach by following the principles from Martin Buber's “I and Thou” philosophy to view the youths with a humanistic and spiritual model. The SPARK program is a 10-week peer-mentorship program that connects youth on probation with college students who aspire to be educators. The SPARK program aims to ignite the spirit of hope, healing, …

A School’S Guide To Tackling Bullying With The B-Pat Framework, Eric Landers, Juliann Sergi Mcbrayer Nov 2025

A School’S Guide To Tackling Bullying With The B-Pat Framework, Eric Landers, Juliann Sergi Mcbrayer

National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Journal

Bullying is one of the most prevalent forms of victimization in schools, affecting nearly one in five students and contributing to academic decline, absenteeism, and mental health concerns. The Bullying Problem Analysis Triangle (B-PAT) provides a schoolwide framework to proactively address bullying by examining three core components: the aggressor, the target, and the opportunity. When one of these elements is disrupted, the bullying dynamic weakens. B-PAT also emphasizes empowering support staff as place managers, protecting targets through effective school climate and education, and redirecting aggressors toward prosocial leadership. Using data, schools can analyze patterns and adapt policies. Through training, strategic …

The Progression Of Deinstitutionalization And Its Effects On The American South: A Judicial Analysis Of 20th-Century United States Supreme Court Decisions, Eva-Marie V. Jones Nov 2025

The Progression Of Deinstitutionalization And Its Effects On The American South: A Judicial Analysis Of 20th-Century United States Supreme Court Decisions, Eva-Marie V. Jones

Honors College Theses

This thesis explores the effects of four landmark Supreme Court cases on the deinstitutionalization movement in the American south. Previous literature frequently discusses the legislative implications of this era; however, no law is applicable without the interpretation and application of the judiciary, which so often contextualizes the greater public perspective. Rarely has an analysis of judicial decisions involving psychiatric care merged with regional focus, and certainly not in a format accessible to the average individual.

From unmarked graves to abandoned infrastructure, the legacy of historic psychiatric care in the United States has been largely obscured – yet its consequences continue …

Forbidden Triples For $2$-Connected Graphs With Minimum Degree Three Which Contain $K_4$ And $K_{2,2}$, Takafumi Kotani, Yoshimi Egawa Oct 2025

Forbidden Triples For $2$-Connected Graphs With Minimum Degree Three Which Contain $K_4$ And $K_{2,2}$, Takafumi Kotani, Yoshimi Egawa

Theory & Applications of Graphs

For a family $\mathcal{H}$ of graphs, a graph $G$ is said to be $\mathcal{H}$-free if $G$ contains no member of $\mathcal{H}$ as an induced subgraph. Let $\mathcal{G}_2^{(3)}}(\mathcal{H})$ denote the family of $2$-connected $\mathcal{H}$-free graphs having minimum degree at least $3$. This paper is concerned with families $\mathcal{H}$ of connected graphs with $|\mathcal{H}| = 3$ such that $\mathcal{G}_2^{(3)}}(\mathcal{H})$ is a finite family. In particular, we show that for a connected graph $T$ of order at least $3$ that is not a star, $\mathcal{G}_2^{(3)}(\{K_4,K_{2,2},T\})$ is finite if and only if $T$ is a path of order at most $6$.

Law As A Tool Of Empire: A Transhistorical Comparison Of Mandate Palestine And Ancient Rome, Will L. Hisle Oct 2025

Law As A Tool Of Empire: A Transhistorical Comparison Of Mandate Palestine And Ancient Rome, Will L. Hisle

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

Through a comparative analysis of Law and Identity in Mandate Palestine by Assaf Likhovski, and A Legal History of Rome by George Mousourakis, this essay demonstrates that law was crucial to the expansion of empire. When read in tandem, these monographs provide a transhistorical framework for viewing law outside of itself, as a mechanism of colonial and imperial domination.

Layer By Layer: Elevating Mathematics Learning With 3d Printing, Jia He, Eryn Michelle Maher, Heidi Eisenreich, Ha Nguyen Oct 2025

Layer By Layer: Elevating Mathematics Learning With 3d Printing, Jia He, Eryn Michelle Maher, Heidi Eisenreich, Ha Nguyen

Proceedings of the Annual Meeting of the Georgia Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators

This article explores how 3D printing, particularly through the free and widely used slicing program Cura, can support the Concrete-Representational-Abstract (CRA) instructional model in alignment with Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) mathematics standards. Through the CRA lens, students engage with tangible models, modify drawings and diagrams, and connect these experiences to symbols and formulas through a cyclical process. Cura’s design and printing processes invite authentic mathematical reasoning about geometry, measurement, and proportionality. Real-world constraints, such as infill density and support structures, create opportunities for students to explore relationships among shape, size, and resource optimization. By sharing approachable examples and classroom …

Oer Financial Literacy Curriculum For Mathematics Educators And Georgia’S New Mandates, Marnie Phipps, Patty Condict, John Bragelman Oct 2025

Oer Financial Literacy Curriculum For Mathematics Educators And Georgia’S New Mandates, Marnie Phipps, Patty Condict, John Bragelman

Proceedings of the Annual Meeting of the Georgia Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators

In 2022, Georgia agencies added new financial literacy requirements for both high school students and teacher qualifications to enhance financial literacy across the state. In response, a group of faculty members in an education preparation program acquired funding and developed a financial literacy curriculum for secondary preservice teachers. The OER curriculum was implemented in a senior-level capstone course. This manuscript presents a pilot study of the curriculum, including data collection and analysis for the project.

Tools, Differentiation, And Professional Growth: What Preservice Teachers Gain From Attending A Mathematics Teaching Conference, Heidi Eisenreich, India Fleming Oct 2025

Tools, Differentiation, And Professional Growth: What Preservice Teachers Gain From Attending A Mathematics Teaching Conference, Heidi Eisenreich, India Fleming

Proceedings of the Annual Meeting of the Georgia Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators

This study explores how Preservice Teachers’ (PSTs’) attendance at a professional mathematics teaching conference influences their development as future teachers. Fourteen University PSTs attended the Georgia Mathematics Conference (GMC), a two-and-a-half-day teaching conference for K–16 mathematics teachers and administrators. Using constant comparative analysis to code qualitative data, we analyzed responses from one question on tool usage in pre- and post- conference surveys. Initial findings indicate that conference attendance increased PSTs' commitment to ongoing professional development, while simultaneously helping them develop more nuanced understandings of the complexity of teaching.

False Friends: The Pereiaslav Agreement Of 1654 And Competing Narratives In Russian And Ukrainian Historiographies, Jiansheng Zhang Oct 2025

False Friends: The Pereiaslav Agreement Of 1654 And Competing Narratives In Russian And Ukrainian Historiographies, Jiansheng Zhang

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

The Pereiaslav Agreement of 1654, concluded between the Cossack Hetmanate and the Grand Duchy of Muscovy at the Pereiaslav Rada, marked the beginning of modern Cossack-Muscovite (in perspective, Ukrainian-Russian) relations. Owing to its central role in shaping both Russian and Ukrainian national narratives, the agreement remains a highly contentious event in Eastern European history. Historians from the Russian and Ukrainian historiographical traditions offer divergent interpretations of how the agreement was conceived and received by the Cossacks and Muscovites. Drawing on a wide range of primary and secondary sources, this essay critically examines these competing narratives and concludes that Ukrainian historiography—emphasizing …

Qisas: The Incremental Formation Of Jihad Amidst The Islamic Mujahideen Across The Middle And Near East, Jenny N. Liang Oct 2025

Qisas: The Incremental Formation Of Jihad Amidst The Islamic Mujahideen Across The Middle And Near East, Jenny N. Liang

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

Since its inception in seventh-century Arabia, Islamic thought and the concept of jihad have been present among Islamic scholars. Nevertheless, despite a history of conflict with Western nations through religious wars in the Near and Middle East, the rapid transformation of Islamic extremism by means of global terrorism in the late twentieth- and early twenty-first century ultimately traces to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and the rise of the Mujahideen. Islamic yearning for retribution through strategic retaliation began after December 1979, when Soviet Red Army troops invaded Afghanistan. Following the resolution of World War II and the emergence of a …

Through His Eyes: The Life Of American Pows In Germany And Ben Phelper’S Diary, Bianca Shah

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

This paper aims to examine the treatment American prisoners of war experienced at the hands of their German captors during World War II. Ben Phelper, a US Airman who was taken captive by the Germans from 1943-1945, wrote a diary detailing his daily life while living in the stalags. This research uses Phelper’s diary to understand what life was like for Americans in German POW camps and compares Phelper’s experience to existing literature on how Germans treated their American POWs. This paper specifically focuses on four aspects of Phelper’s life in relation to the provisions of the Geneva Convention, the …
