"A Crack In The Ice": Attachment And Insanity In Pink Floyd's The Wall, Margaret E. Geddy Apr 2018

"A Crack In The Ice": Attachment And Insanity In Pink Floyd's The Wall, Margaret E. Geddy

Honors College Theses

Pink Floyd’s concept album The Wall follows a musician named Pink from adolescence to adulthood as he struggles to maintain his sanity while searching for a genuine connection "on the thin ice of modern life." This paper analyzes several aspects of the album to trace the character’s break with reality and what he comes to realize, such as all of the lyrics, the track-listing and the side each song appears on, and any non-musical background noise. Through the lens of Attachment Theory, a type of developmental psychology, the inevitability of Pink’s descent into madness is shown, as is how his …

A Comprehensive Study On The Application Of The Theory Of African American Offending, Janice C. Simon Apr 2018

A Comprehensive Study On The Application Of The Theory Of African American Offending, Janice C. Simon

Honors College Theses

Racial disparity in the Criminal Justice System (CJS) has always been a hot button topic of discussion and the question of whether it exist or not. In the last few decades race and crime have become the overwhelming media topic and it has gone up in flames over the recent killings of young, unarmed, African American men by police officers. However, this study examines and confirms that racial disparity occurs at every level of the CJS, while subsequently explaining how and why society believes the stereotypes and why African Americans effectively exhibit this stereotype.

The Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program: Attitudes Towards Prisoners As Reported By College Students, Laurel M. Sabadosh Apr 2018

The Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program: Attitudes Towards Prisoners As Reported By College Students, Laurel M. Sabadosh

Honors College Theses

The Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program involves students from Georgia Southern University and inmates from Smith State Prison who interact and hope to receive a deeper understanding of the justice system through experiential learning. This style of learning has demonstrated greater effectiveness in learning outcomes and a more positive student experience compared to classical, lecture-based learning. No previous research has compared changes in perceptions of students in the Inside-Out Program to a lecture based course of the same content. The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in students’ attitudes towards prisoners over eight weeks between participants in the Inside-Out …

The Combined Effects Of Atrazine And Tetracycline On Primary Producers And Zooplankton In Freshwater Microcosms, Madison R. Kelly Apr 2018

The Combined Effects Of Atrazine And Tetracycline On Primary Producers And Zooplankton In Freshwater Microcosms, Madison R. Kelly

Honors College Theses

Widespread use of agrochemicals such as herbicides and antibiotics increases their likelihood of entering aquatic systems in mixture. Despite different modes of action, atrazine (herbicide) and tetracycline (antibiotic) adversely affect non-target photosynthetic organisms, such algae and macrophytes, with the potential to reduce food availability to higher trophic levels. However, the effects of simultaneous exposure to both contaminants have yet to be determined. I hypothesized that a mixture of atrazine and tetracycline affects freshwater communities differently than each compound alone. A microcosm experiment was conducted to test effects of environmentally relevant concentrations of atrazine (1 μg L-1) and tetracycline …

The 1492 Jewish Expulsion From Spain: How Identity Politics And Economics Converged, Michelina Restaino Apr 2018

The 1492 Jewish Expulsion From Spain: How Identity Politics And Economics Converged, Michelina Restaino

Honors College Theses

In 1492, after Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand defeated the last Muslim stronghold on the Iberian Peninsula, they presented the Jewish community throughout their kingdoms with a choice: leaving or converting to Catholicism. The Spanish kingdoms had been anti-Jewish for centuries, forcing the creation of ghettos, the use of identifying clothing, etc. in an effort to isolate and “other” the Jews, who unsuccessfully sought peaceful co-existence. Those who did not accept expulsion, but converted, were the subject of further prejudice stemming from a belief that Jewish blood was tainted and that conversions were undertaken for financial gain. The government’s dramatic …

Navigating The Double Bind: Exploring The Relationship Between Gender, Political Ideology, And Human Rights, Ashley Archer Apr 2018

Navigating The Double Bind: Exploring The Relationship Between Gender, Political Ideology, And Human Rights, Ashley Archer

Honors College Theses

Do female chief executives on the political left exhibit better respect towards human rights than their counterparts on the political right? This paper explores the relationship between a female political leader and her ideology and how this relationship may influence policy attitudes, specifically, human rights practices within a country. I argue that women leaders face a political double bind in their actions and that their ideologies affect how they navigate this bind. Past research has found that women leaders must fulfill two roles: their role as leader and their role as woman (Paxton and Hughes 2014). Women leaders must work …

An Area Based Fan Beam Projection Model, Richard E. Steele, Jiehua Zhu Apr 2018

An Area Based Fan Beam Projection Model, Richard E. Steele, Jiehua Zhu

Honors College Theses

Area based projection models for computed tomography mitigate raw data errors by treating X-Rays as beams, whereas traditional line based projection models treat an X-Ray like a line, thus generating significant error. In an existing area based fan beam projection model, a rotation matrix, Q, simulates the rotation of the emitter detector pair to reduce computational load, but this introduces approximations by using an approximated rotation matrix. We eliminate approximations by deriving an exact formula for the entries of Q. Using a rotation of axes and by considering the neighboring cells' contributions to the area, the result has formulations for …

The purpose of this research study is to assess the cognitive and social-emotional developmental outcomes of pediatric cancer survivors who currently receive chemotherapy or have received chemotherapy in the past.

DESIGN/METHODS: This pilot study used a quantitative survey to assess cognitive and social-emotional developmental outcomes of pediatric cancer survivors. The inclusion criteria for this study included parents of school aged children (ages 5-18) who received chemotherapy for at least six months, either currently or …

Reverting To The Right: Analyzing The Recent Reversion Of Western Liberal Democracies, Kevin Crosby Apr 2018

Reverting To The Right: Analyzing The Recent Reversion Of Western Liberal Democracies, Kevin Crosby

Honors College Theses

This paper will investigate and analyze the rise of the far right movement’s influence and legitimacy in European Union (EU) states. The far right movement has been characterized by its nationalism, nativism, and skepticism of global and regional integration. In Europe the global financial crisis of 2008 and the current European immigration crisis have shaken public faith in EU integration efforts and led to the legitimization of far right political movements that previously represented a bare minority in political discourse. The expansion of such movements has led to massive policy shifts throughout Europe, such as the United Kingdom’s decision to …

Adherence Of Collegiate Level, Recreational/Intramural And Non-Athlete College Students To The Mediterranean Diet, Amber E. Ugbo Apr 2018

Adherence Of Collegiate Level, Recreational/Intramural And Non-Athlete College Students To The Mediterranean Diet, Amber E. Ugbo

Honors College Theses

The Mediterranean Diet, which is rich in complex carbohydrates and plant-based foods, may be beneficial to athletic performance. To date, no one has examined adherence of collegiate athletes to a Mediterranean Diet. This study compared how closely collegiate, recreational/intramural, and non-athletes in college followed a Mediterranean Diet. Surveys and validated Mediterranean Diet score questionnaires were completed by 933 undergraduates in HLTH 1520: Healthful Living at Georgia Southern University. Participants self-reported following various diets including decreased or increased carbohydrate, increased protein, and increased water intake. No one specifically reported following a Mediterranean Diet and total calculated Mediterranean Diet scores were low …

Perceptions And Use Of Nonnutritive Sweeteners Among College Students Based Upon Athletic Status, Gender, And Academic Major, Madison B. Heydinger Apr 2018

Perceptions And Use Of Nonnutritive Sweeteners Among College Students Based Upon Athletic Status, Gender, And Academic Major, Madison B. Heydinger

Honors College Theses

Nonnutritive sweeteners, which include sucralose, aspartame, saccharin, and stevia may positively impact health of individuals by helping to reduce Caloric and added sugar intake. Athletes may consider these factors when attempting to improve performance and, as such, may benefit from their use. However, no one has examined sources of nutrition knowledge and perceptions as well as use of nonnutritive sweeteners in college students based upon athletic status, gender, and whether students are studying a health or non-health related major. The objective of this study was to compare college students’ sources of nutrition knowledge to their perceptions and consumption of nonnutritive …

Read, Write, And Relax: Teachers Perspectives On The Decrease Of Naptime In Kindergarten, Ashleigh Marion Apr 2018

Read, Write, And Relax: Teachers Perspectives On The Decrease Of Naptime In Kindergarten, Ashleigh Marion

Honors College Theses

There have been multiple studies from different perspectives, about the role that naptime plays in early childhood education classrooms. However, there is limited research on how teachers feel about this subject. The purpose of this study is to explore and understand teachers’ perspectives and experiences with the current decrease in nap time and how this decrease affects their Kindergarten classrooms. To gain a better understanding of teachers’ perspectives of the decrease of naptime in Kindergarten classrooms, I interviewed six veteran Kindergarten teachers. These teachers have taught in Kindergarten classrooms where naptime was part of their schedule and in classrooms where …

Examining Origins And Reasoning For Beliefs Surrounding Contraceptive Practices In College Women, Kathryn Keith Apr 2018

Examining Origins And Reasoning For Beliefs Surrounding Contraceptive Practices In College Women, Kathryn Keith

Honors College Theses

This research project studies how students’ perceptions, actions, and thoughts around contraceptive practices develop over time and through college. The literature addresses how the environment of college and American culture affects how women develop contraceptive practices that are convenient not only for their bodies but their schedules. Research focuses on how educational background, religion, culture, and relationships influence contraceptive choices among students, especially women. Social factors influencing availability of contraception and education about contraception potentially lead to confusion about the most effective ways to prevent sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and pregnancy. I focused exclusively on the Georgia Southern University community, …
