Students With Autism Spectrum Disorders Who Participate In First Robotics, Karin M. Fisher, Benjamin Gallegos, Taylor Bousfield
Proceedings of the Interdisciplinary STEM Teaching & Learning Conference (Archived)
One of the challenges of educating adolescents with autism spectrum disorders is to find activities that are interesting and engaging. Researchers have shown that adolescents with autism often are attracted to technology. Using an exploratory research method, the experiences of three students with autism who participated in after school robotics clubs were analyzed. Common themes to emerge were the students with ASD were engaged and interested in FIRST robotics and technology. Specifically, they enjoyed coming up with ideas, inventions, and creating or solving missions. Their confidence increased and they learned to work better on teams. Additionally, they needed significant supports …

Pain, Severity, And Attentional Capacity Following Acute Musculoskeletal Injury, Rebekah F. Roessler
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Background: As recreational activities grow in popularity, there is a concurrent rise in musculoskeletal injury. Injury severity is determined through clinical evaluation and defined by a grading scale. Pain is included in the definition of each injury grade, despite the lack of any conclusive evidence relating injury severity and the associated pain. Additionally, previous studies report impairments in cognitive performance due to chronic and acute pain. The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between the perceived pain intensity and the clinically diagnosed severity of an acute musculoskeletal injury, and to determine if attentional capacity is influenced by …
Quantifying The Morphological And Physiological Effects Of Drought, Grass Invasion, And Fire On Longleaf, Loblolly, And Slash Pine, Laura Young
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Climate change is altering ecosystems on a global scale, creating novel ecological scenarios with which plant species must cope. Factors such as altered precipitation and fire regimes and non-native plant invasion may negatively affect native plant species, while interactions between these stressors could magnify their impacts. The complexity of multiple stressors and the effects they have on native pine seedlings are difficult to predict without evaluating their combinations in field experiments. In a multi-year study, I investigated the effects of drought and plant invasion on three southeastern pine species under pre and post-fire conditions. We planted longleaf (Pinus palustris …

Perceptions Of African American College Women: Std/Sti Health Risk Behaviors Among African American Women, Dashawna C. Anderson
Honors College Theses
Sexually transmitted disease/infection (STD/STI) rates are on the rise for African American women. Recent literature argues that African American women may have a lack of education concerning STDs/STIs. To fill this gap in the literature, in-depth qualitative interviews, using a health equity lens, were conducted with ten college, African American women, living in the Southern United States, to gain their perceptions about the causes of STDs/STIs among the African American female population. Consistent with previous research, findings indicate that African American women may lack knowledge about STDs/STIs and be less likely to participate in medical check-ups. Participants were more likely …

Isolation, Athletic Identity, And Social Support: An Exploration Among Injured Collegiate Student-Athletes, Ally W. Claytor
Isolation, Athletic Identity, And Social Support: An Exploration Among Injured Collegiate Student-Athletes, Ally W. Claytor
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Season ending and career ending injuries make up a large portion of all injuries (Tirabassi et al., 2016). Among psychological consequences to these types of injuries, isolation is a social consequence that has been identified as occurring after injury (Gould et al., 1997). Isolation is related to loss of identity for an athlete (Mankand et al., 2009). Additionally, low levels of support have been shown to increase feelings of isolation in injured athletes (Mitchell et al., 2014). The purpose of the present study was to explore the experience of isolation as a psychological response to injury among athletes with career …

"Solace For [The] Very Soul": The Role Of Trees Within The American Short-Story Cycle, Breanna B. Harris
"Solace For [The] Very Soul": The Role Of Trees Within The American Short-Story Cycle, Breanna B. Harris
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Over the last couple of centuries, the American short-story genre became characterized by its observations of life and human nature—specifically by using scenes of nature to highlight characters’ development and the underlying theme. While much critical attention has been given to the role of nature in the American short-story cycle, very little consideration has been given to the purpose of trees and their specific breeds within the genre. This project focuses on three distinct pedagogical approaches to analyzing trees in three short-story cycles. Deleuze and Guattari’s theory of the rhizome and Freud’s theory of dream-thoughts are applied to Mary Wilkins …

Using The Theory Of Reasoned Action To Analyze African American College Students Intentions To Participate In Bio Banking Research, Bethrand O. Ugwu
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The proliferation of biobanks has created new opportunities for researchers to conduct cutting-edge research that was not possible a decade ago. The results of early studies using biospecimens in cancer research have been encouraging. However, researchers are concerned about the applicability of the new knowledge that is being produced to racially diverse subgroups because African American (AA) participation in biobanking research is low. The current study assessed how AA college students’ attitudes and social norms influenced their intentions to participate in biobanking research. This research was guided by Ajzen and Fishbein’s Theory of Reasoned Action as the analytic lens. Methods: …
