"I Probably Wouldn't Be As Happy": Childhood Parental Separation And Posttraumatic Growth Narratives From Eight College Students, Meagan C. Arrastia-Chisholm, Hoa Nguyen, Africa Pippin, Heather M. Kelley Ph.D. Sep 2025

"I Probably Wouldn't Be As Happy": Childhood Parental Separation And Posttraumatic Growth Narratives From Eight College Students, Meagan C. Arrastia-Chisholm, Hoa Nguyen, Africa Pippin, Heather M. Kelley Ph.D.

Journal of Higher Education & Student Affairs

Parental separation during childhood leads to long-lasting psychological and socioemotional impact on the lives of emerging adults as they transition into higher education. The long-term effects of childhood parental separation on college students' academic performance, physical health, and overall mental wellbeing are well-documented. However, students can develop resilience to cope with challenging family and life experiences and even demonstrate post-traumatic growth. Post-traumatic growth refers to the positive changes and experiences college students discover after enduring life disruptions, such as being separated from their parents at an early age. To better understand the connection between parental separation and posttraumatic growth, a …

Examining The Relationship Between Discriminated Medical Care And Telehealth Use In The United States, Jennifer E. Akpo, Samuel Opoku, Bettye A. Apenteng, William A. Mase Jul 2025

Examining The Relationship Between Discriminated Medical Care And Telehealth Use In The United States, Jennifer E. Akpo, Samuel Opoku, Bettye A. Apenteng, William A. Mase

Health Policy & Community Health: Faculty Publications

Introduction: Discrimination in healthcare can lead to reduced trust in the system and reluctance to seek care. Telehealth and other digital health technologies may have the potential to reduce inequality and bias within the healthcare system since the virtual space may minimize the implicit social and cultural biases that can influence face-to-face interactions in the traditional in-person healthcare delivery settings. However, amidst a growing body of literature on how different racial and ethnic groups use telehealth services, the extent to which discrimination in medical care drives the use of telehealth in the United States has remained largely uncharacterized. We aimed …

Rural Hospital Philanthropy: Community Awareness And Willingness To Donate To The Georgia Rural Hospital Tax Credit Program, Linda Kimsey, Bettye A. Apenteng, Samuel Opoku, Charles F. Owens, Angela Peden, Aishat Adewoye, Foram Patel

Health Policy & Community Health: Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: The Rural Hospital Tax Credit program, legislated by the Georgia General Assembly, provides financial support to rural hospitals by allowing Georgia taxpayers to contribute to eligible rural hospitals, receiving a 100% tax credit for their donation. While the policy aims to improve hospital financial stability, little is known about public awareness of the program or factors influencing willingness to donate. This study examines community members’ awareness of the Georgia rural hospital tax credit program and their willingness to donate to it to better understand donor perspectives in underserved areas.

METHODS: The study analyzed secondary data obtained from surveys completed …

Defining Economic And Environmental Typologies Across 77 Countries To Prioritize Opportunities For Nonsewered Sanitation, Hannah A. C. Lohman, Yalin Li, Xinyi Zhang, Victoria L. Morgan, Shion Watabe, Stetson Rowles, Roland D. Cusick, Jeremy S. Guest Jul 2025

Defining Economic And Environmental Typologies Across 77 Countries To Prioritize Opportunities For Nonsewered Sanitation, Hannah A. C. Lohman, Yalin Li, Xinyi Zhang, Victoria L. Morgan, Shion Watabe, Stetson Rowles, Roland D. Cusick, Jeremy S. Guest

Civil Engineering & Construction: Faculty Publications

Lack of access to sanitation is a challenge that persists globally, with low sewerage connection rates in many low- and lower-middle-income countries. Engineered nonsewered sanitation (NSS) technologies can meet treatment requirements without sewers, but their relative sustainability varies across potential deployment sites. Here, we characterize the costs and carbon intensity (CI) of three emerging NSS technologies, two community reinvented toilets (CRTs) and one Omni Processor (OP), across 77 countries, identify sustainability performance typologies, and map typology prevalence in countries across the globe. Locality-specific factors such as wages, diet, and material costs drive regional variability in NSS costs by up to …

Social-Emotional Learning In A Week-Long Theatre Camp For Youth, Emily E. Virtue, Lisa C. Mann, Hannah Diener Jul 2025

Social-Emotional Learning In A Week-Long Theatre Camp For Youth, Emily E. Virtue, Lisa C. Mann, Hannah Diener

Current Issues in Middle Level Education

Understanding how social-emotional learning develops in middle level education is important for educators and parents as they work to guide youth toward healthy relationships and responsible citizenship. Many studies demonstrate that students who participate in theatre have shown greater emotional health and more capacity to move through conflict positively. This study asks if social-emotional learning through theatre education can still happen outside of a formal educational setting. This study is a mixed methods investigation of a week-long theatre camp in the summer for upper elementary and middle school youth. Four aspects of social emotional learning were studied: task articulation, self-regulation, …

Exploring The Impact Of A Middle Level School Therapy Dog On Students And Staff And Connections To Best Practices In Middle School Education, Brandye Nobiling, Sherry Maykrantz, Tara Downes, Joshua Nobiling

Current Issues in Middle Level Education

The presence of therapy dogs in schools has increased due to the growing body of research showing positive effects of assisted-animal interaction. But there is little published research on how an innovation such as a therapy dog connects to best practices in middle level education. The goal of the research was to use the Diffusion of Innovation (DOI) theory to connect the implementation of a therapy dog to the Association for Middle Level Education’s (AMLE) essential attributes and characteristics as well as components of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) model. Focus …

From Observation To Ethical Inquiry: Course Redesign In Middle Level Educator Preparation, Sarah Straub, Elizabeth Gound

Current Issues in Middle Level Education

This manuscript explores the transformative impact of ethical engagement in the course MLGE 3301: Adolescent Learning, designed for pre-field students in an educator preparation program. Focused on middle-grade education and special education, this course incorporates a significant service learning component, with undergraduate students spending 10 service hours in middle school classrooms and conducting interviews with middle school students. The purpose of the interviews is to enable pre-field students to engage with middle school students and use the insights gained to reflect on the alignment between their coursework in adolescent learning theory and real-world experiences. Two professors leading the course recognized …

Advancing Circular Bioeconomy Through A Systems-Level Assessment Of Food Waste And Industrial Sludge Codigestion, Md Nizam Uddin, Cassidy Hartog, Emma Murray, Jacob Loveless, Luke Roberson, Asli Aslan, Francisco Cubas, Stetson Rowles Jul 2025

Advancing Circular Bioeconomy Through A Systems-Level Assessment Of Food Waste And Industrial Sludge Codigestion, Md Nizam Uddin, Cassidy Hartog, Emma Murray, Jacob Loveless, Luke Roberson, Asli Aslan, Francisco Cubas, Stetson Rowles

Civil Engineering & Construction: Faculty Publications

Disposal of food waste (FW) in landfills remains an unsustainable practice for organic waste management. Simultaneously, pulp and paper mills produce significant amounts of recalcitrant organic waste that is difficult to decompose due to its high lignocellulosic content. In this study, we developed an innovative approach to improve the digestion of pulp and paper mill sludge (PPMS) by amending FW to produce a low chemical oxygen demand (COD) sludge while recovering methane in the process. This codigestion process was evaluated through lab-scale biogas production experiments coupled with a comprehensive economic and environmental sustainability assessment. Biomethane production results revealed that the …
