College Women And The Occurrence Of Unwanted Sexual Advances In Public Drinking Settings: A Feminist Routine Activities Approach, Abby Mccoll Johnson Jul 2006

College Women And The Occurrence Of Unwanted Sexual Advances In Public Drinking Settings: A Feminist Routine Activities Approach, Abby Mccoll Johnson

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Using existing data from the 1999 Harvard School of Public Health College Alcohol Study, this thesis analyzes the social predictors of unwanted sexual advances experienced by college women and where this type of victimization occurs. Hypotheses were derived from routine activities theory and feminist theory. Findings show that attendance at bars has a more significant effect on experiences of unwanted sexual advances than attendance at parties, attendance at drink promotions, and participation in drinking games. Increased alcohol consumption at bars has a signifcant effect on unwanted sexual advances. The analysis also reveals that alcohol abstention at parties has a significant …

Forbidden Fruit: Dryden's The State Of Innocence And Fall Of Man, An Operatic Version Of Paradise Lost, Devane King Middleton May 2006

Forbidden Fruit: Dryden's The State Of Innocence And Fall Of Man, An Operatic Version Of Paradise Lost, Devane King Middleton

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Ever since Dryden published his opera The state of innocence, critics have speculated about his reasons for making a stage adaptation of Milton's Paradise lost. The fact that Dryden worked for Milton in Cromwell's government may have been a factor. Dryden's Puritan indoctrination during childhood, followed by influences from a royalist schoolmaster in his teenage years, makes the answer to the question somewhat more complex, as does the fact that the play, its source a Puritan epic adapted by an Anglican royalist poet, is dedicated to the Catholic bride of James, Duke of York and brother to Charles II. Throughout …

Elementary Principals' And Pta Parent Representatives' Perceptions About The Effects Of Parental Involvement On Student Achievement In Georgia Title I Schools, Zack K. Phillips

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The primary focus of this study is to explore the perceptions of elementary principals and PTA parent representatives about the effects of parental involvement on student achievement in three Georgia Title I schools. This particular study evolved from firsthand experiences while working with less fortunate students in a Title I school setting. The affective factors include but are not limited to the perceptions of the elementary principals and parent representatives. Based upon findings in the review of literature, the researcher gained an understanding about how to structure interview questions in order to prompt in-depth responses from the interviewees. Data collection …

Age Effects On Social And Investigative Behaviors In A Closed Population Of African Elephants, Christen Eileen Merte May 2006

Age Effects On Social And Investigative Behaviors In A Closed Population Of African Elephants, Christen Eileen Merte

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

In this study of African elephants (Loxodonta africana), I examined two competing hypotheses to explain the development of social and reproductive behaviors. The reproductive hypothesis states that behaviors change around the time when an individual begins successfully reproducing, while the social dominance hypothesis states that behaviors change throughout the life of an individual, reflective of changes in social rank. These hypotheses were explored in male and female elephants during the entry to a signal-rich waterhole and in female African elephants across seasons. Chemosensory and social behaviors were recorded in Addo Elephant National Park between May 2004 and June 2005 using …

Nurse Practitioners In Burn Centers: An Exploration Of The Developing Role, Trisha Ann Myers May 2006

Nurse Practitioners In Burn Centers: An Exploration Of The Developing Role, Trisha Ann Myers

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore job satisfaction, barriers to practice, roles, and collaboration among nurse practitioners (NPs) choosing to practice in the environment of caring for burned patients. Exploration and identification of the role of NPs practicing among this unique population may benefit patients, and the burn community, when the expertise of the NP is added to a greater multi-disciplinary team. Two data collection instruments were utilized to measure the criterion variable job satisfaction: The Misener Nurse Practitioner Job Satisfaction Scale and a semi-structured telephone interview. Study participants consisted of 24 NPs employed in 16 burn centers …

Teaching Ethics In The Information Systems Curriculum, Camille FrançOise Rogers

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation evaluates the importance of teaching ethics in the Information Systems curriculum. It begins with a review of the expectations and recommendations of three distinct academic and professional organizations (AACSB, IS2002 Model Curriculum, and ABET) specifically related to ethics teaching. This case study is centered on a set of ethics instruction that was used to teach ethics to senior level Information Systems students, which included a discussion of professional codes of ethics, mini-case studies, contemporary news events, a historical novel called IBM and the Holocaust (Black, 2001a), a Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) ethics grid created by the instructor, …

Playground For The Imagination, B. Darlene Miller May 2006

Playground For The Imagination, B. Darlene Miller

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Over the past years, my work has been based on a desire to depict the spiritual and physiological interdependence humans have with the wetland ecosystem. As I examine the shapes of trees and their roots through rubbings, paintings, and sculpture, I sought to express this interaction between humans and nature. My artwork metamorphosed from the traditionally separated forms of painting and sculpture into an environment. The transformation of natural materials into manufactured products led me to cultivate a deeper understanding of ecology, where humans are participants in the natural process of the life cycle. Nature becomes the primary subject and …

Principles For Education Of The Social Reconstructionists And Critical Theorists: A Yardstick Of Democracy, Laurie Gertrude Hill

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This work is a theoretical and historical study of democracy as it relates to democratic educational practices and explores the implications that democratic reform in education has the potential to diminish inequity and social injustice in society. The study presents an intense review of the development of democracy from Plato to the present day. The progressive principles for democracy of the Social Reconstructionists and Critical Theorists form the theoretical framework for the dissertation and a Yardstick of Democracy is developed that draws upon the tenets of John Dewey, George S. Counts, Jane Addams, Paulo Freire, and Michael Apple. Included in …

Right Reverend Stephen Elliott: Political Influence And The Protestant Episcopal Church In Georgia, 1840-1866, Paulette S. Thompson May 2006

Right Reverend Stephen Elliott: Political Influence And The Protestant Episcopal Church In Georgia, 1840-1866, Paulette S. Thompson

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

By the late 1840's, the South's religious and political convictions upheld slaveholders' social and economic views. These convictions permeated worship services in Georgia via the ministries. At the onset of the Civil War, spirituality provided an essential source of Southern strength in both victory and defeat. As fortitude subsided, religion also played a prodigious role in perpetuating the Confederate experience. For a generation, its theology had endorsed the South's social arrangement, asserted the morality of slavery, expunged Southern sins, and recruited the populace as God's devout guardians of the institution. Sustained by the belief that they were God's chosen people, …

Georgia Public School Superintendency: An Exploration Of The Profession, Tina Mychele Swain May 2006

Georgia Public School Superintendency: An Exploration Of The Profession, Tina Mychele Swain

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

During the study, the researcher investigated the overall characteristics of the Georgia public school superintendency. The school superintendent has many functions, but all of these functions are to achieve one primary goal: the best possible educational environment for all children. Demands that are now being placed on school superintendents require them to create conditions in which all students can increase achievement, while creating these conditions with fewer and fewer resources. The superintendent constantly seeks consensus between the board, staff, and the community to make the best educational decisions for all students. The superintendent is a leader in the true sense, …
