Faculty Center: News & Publications
Excerpt: "Program change is underway at the Center for Excellence in Teaching & Learning. Having taught college for about twenty years and directed a faculty center at another university, I became the full-time director of the CET in June 2006. With the collaboration and work of the whole staff, we have begun a new and re-imagined stage in the CET’s support for faculty in teaching, student learning, scholarship, and academic life. The banyan tree, the “tree that walks,” is now our logo. For why we are hanging out in its branches, and swinging from its roots, go to http://academics.georgiasouthern.edu/cet/banyan.htm. With …

Principals' Perceptions Regarding Recess In Georgia Elementary Schools, Lori Elaine Morrison
Principals' Perceptions Regarding Recess In Georgia Elementary Schools, Lori Elaine Morrison
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The researcher's purpose in this study was to obtain the perceptions of principals regarding recess in Georgia's elementary schools, their recess practices, their considerations in developing recess, their guidelines of implementing recess, and principal's demographics. The quantitative data was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) (1999)-program version 11.0. The researcher developed a Likert-scale survey that was mailed to 500 Georgia elementary principals. Two hundred ten principals completed and returned the questionnaire. In the overarching question, the researcher proposed to examine the perceptions of principals regarding recess in Georgia elementary schools. The following findings support principals' perceived recess positively …
Perceived Threat Of Hiv/Aids Between Men Who Have Sex With Men And Heterosexual Males, Traci Laquey Cleveland
Perceived Threat Of Hiv/Aids Between Men Who Have Sex With Men And Heterosexual Males, Traci Laquey Cleveland
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This study compared the perceived threat of HIV/AIDS and explored the sexual risky behaviors between men who have sex with men (MSM) and heterosexual males. Participants were asked to complete a 33 question survey which included 22 Likert-type scale questions developed to measure the perceived threat of HIV/AIDS, 8 dichotomous questions designed to measure sexual risk behavior and 3 demographic variables; age, sexual orientation and race. The case group consisted of 52 MSM and the control group consisted of 96 heterosexual males. No statistical significant diffrence was found among sexual risky behaviors. Findings from this study indicate that HIV/AIDS prevention …
Coach Effectiveness And Personality Assessments: An Exploratory Analysis Of Thin Slice Interpersonal Perceptions, Jennifer Lynne Knight
Coach Effectiveness And Personality Assessments: An Exploratory Analysis Of Thin Slice Interpersonal Perceptions, Jennifer Lynne Knight
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This research examined accuracy, consensus, and self-other agreement of personality assessments and coaching effectiveness based on thin-slice judgments of 30-second video clips of 9 recreation level coaches. Two hundred and six naive raters viewed the clips and rated the targets on coaching effectiveness and personality attributes. Ratings of coaching effectiveness were correlated with expert ratings of effectiveness to measure accuracy. The ratings of attributes were correlated with expert ratings of the same attributes to measure consensus. Gender, race, and level of sport participation of naive raters was subjected to independent sample t-tests and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) to determine …

Sexually Dimorphic Developmental Patterns Of Chemosensory Behaviors In African Elephants (Loxodonta Africana), Dhaval Kartik Vyas
Sexually Dimorphic Developmental Patterns Of Chemosensory Behaviors In African Elephants (Loxodonta Africana), Dhaval Kartik Vyas
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Like many polygynous mammals, African elephants exhibit social dimorphism in which females reside in matriarchal groups while males often travel alone or in bachelor groups. Males search for receptive mates who may advertise their condition through chemical and other signals. The difference in adult lifestyles suggests that the developmental pattern of communication for the two sexes should diverge when the social environment and reproductive opportunities of males and females begin to differ. In this study, I examined the differences between the sexes and across four age classes (calves, juveniles, subadults and adults) in the performance of chemosensory behaviors. African elephants …
Secession Diplomacy: A Study Of Thomas Butler King, Commissioner Of Georgia To Europe, 1861, Mary Pinckney Kearns
Secession Diplomacy: A Study Of Thomas Butler King, Commissioner Of Georgia To Europe, 1861, Mary Pinckney Kearns
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The objective of this thesis is to determine the function and effectiveness of state diplomats in the Confederate cause abroad by examining the mission of Thomas Butler King to the courts of Europe for the state of Georgia within the context of the international dimensions of the first year of the Civil War. The work will address the various Confederate arguments for recognition through the examination of propaganda documents published by King and their effect on French and British policies. The work will further investigate the direct trade movement of the 1850s and its effect on the southern diplomatic effort.
