The Affordable Care Act And The For-Profit Congregate Care Industry: How Good Policy Intent Turned A Fringe Industry Into A Taxpayer-Funded Multi Billion Dollar Industry, Erin Viehmann
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The Affordable Care Act significantly transformed the for-profit congregate care (FPCC) industry, which provides residential treatment for adolescents with behavioral and mental health issues. This study analyzes financial records from Universal Health Services (UHS), the largest provider in the industry, to examine how healthcare policy changes and economic conditions affected the industry's growth and funding structure. Through analysis of SEC Form 10-K filings from 2006-2016, the research documents how the ACA's mental health coverage mandates created new revenue streams that enabled dramatic industry expansion. Findings show that following ACA passage in 2010, UHS more than doubled its behavioral health capacity …

Building Evidence-Based Pbs For Schools, Clinics And Communities, Tom Clees
Building Evidence-Based Pbs For Schools, Clinics And Communities, Tom Clees
Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference
Abstract
For students in both the general and adapted curriculum, low achievement, behavioral excesses and social skills deficits are predictive of each other (Gresham, 2016;). Too, an escalating cycle may lead to further antisocial responses, a decrease in learning outcomes, and exclusion from services for some (Kauffman, 2018). Related to these challenges, the successful application of positive behavior supports has been widely reported by schools, clinics, and community-based services. Although definitions of PBS, and the scope of these practices, vary depending on the reference point of those responsible for administration and application, there seems to be agreement that PBS practices …
Advancing Theory In Psychographic Market Segmentation Research, Jack A. Lesser, Suanne M. Barthol
Advancing Theory In Psychographic Market Segmentation Research, Jack A. Lesser, Suanne M. Barthol
Journal of Applied Marketing Theory
For decades, marketing research has focused on identifying psychographic segments to develop corporate strategy. However, as this article contends, psychographic segmentation research has often lacked sufficient theoretical grounding, particularly in the selection of variables and underlying theories guiding these studies. To address this gap, the present study systematically reviews a broad range of segmentation studies to evaluate their theoretical contributions and identify promising directions for future research. The analysis begins by examining the theories in a comprehensive psychographic segmentation study by Lesser and Hughes (1986a), followed by a review of 38 additional studies to uncover relevant underlying theories. The study …
The Yin And Yang Of Decision Making: Strategic Planning And Improvisation In An Entrepreneurial Culture, Anton Fenik, Ernest R. Cadotte, Helena F. Allman
The Yin And Yang Of Decision Making: Strategic Planning And Improvisation In An Entrepreneurial Culture, Anton Fenik, Ernest R. Cadotte, Helena F. Allman
Journal of Applied Marketing Theory
Only a few empirical studies examine the influence of organizational improvisation on firm performance. Further, more insight is needed regarding the coexistence of normative (i.e., planned) and descriptive (i.e., improvised) forms of decision-making. This paper contributes to the literature by filling these gaps. It investigates the moderating effect of entrepreneurial behaviors on the relationship between improvisation and firm performance. It explores whether improvisational decision-making can improve firm performance beyond planning’s effect on firm outcomes. We employ decision theory and sensemaking literature in our conceptual model. We test our hypotheses with data from a cross-sectional managerial survey and a behavioral simulation …

The Legacy Of Oscarville: Using Critical Participatory Action Research And Learning Teaching As An Interpretive Process To Sustain A Placeless Place, Leah Panther, Kristie Smith, Mary Mitchelson, Robert Bonner Jr.
Teaching Social Studies in the Peach State
The history of Oscarville, Georgia, nestled within the Lake Lanier region of North Georgia, remains both known and unknown, existing as a significant yet elusive part of local lore and historical retellings. This article delves into the innovative approach of a place-based critical participatory action research program, "Historicizing Oscarville," which engaged teacher candidates and educators in exploring the obscured history of Oscarville. The narrative uncovers the complex layers of settler colonialism, slavery, racial cleansing, and subsequent erasure that characterize Oscarville's past. By employing the framework of Learning Teaching as an Interpretive Process (LTIP) within a place-based education model, the project …
Food Insecurity Amongst Urban College Students, Gerron Scott
Food Insecurity Amongst Urban College Students, Gerron Scott
Journal of Higher Education & Student Affairs
Food insecurity is a growing concern among college students. With the rising food and housing costs, more students are going hungry. This narrative inquiry provides a greater understanding of food insecurity's impact on the college-going experience for urban students. Interviews were conducted with five college students who attend a large public urban university in the mid-Atlantic and use the on-campus food pantry. As a result of the narrative inquiry, six themes emerged. They are peer relationships, government assistance, cost of living, access to healthy food, institutional help, and navigating college. As a result of the study, there are several actionable …

Innovative Climate Pedagogy: Interdisciplinary Approaches To Teaching Climate Change, Jennifer Sweeney Tookes, Lissa M. Leege
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
As a “wicked problem,” climate change requires interdisciplinary understanding and collaboration in order to prepare future leaders to develop solutions. To this end, as an ecologist and an anthropologist at a mid-sized university in the southeastern U.S., we designed a pair of interdisciplinary, research-intensive courses for first-year Honors students with the goal of improving understanding and communicating the urgency of climate change. We employed High Impact Practices (HIPs) and Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs) to accomplish learning outcomes during both years of the course. Gains in scientific knowledge and climate change-specific knowledge were assessed with quantitative and qualitative analysis of …

Practice What We Preach?: A Review Of Journal Publishing Practices Related To Reflective Writing In Sotl, Laura Cruz, Eileen Grodziak, Hillary H. Steiner, Laura Cruz
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) scholars have long advocated for the inclusion of reflective writing as a legitimate form of scholarship. That said, for those instructors seeking to publish their reflective work, especially scholarly personal narratives (SPNs), there are persistent gaps between the aspirations of the field and the realities of scholarly publishing. The present study seeks to illuminate that gap through a systematic analysis of the policies and practices of academic journals as they pertain to the publication of reflective writing in SoTL. The ultimate aim of the study is to enable editors to close the gap between …

Paradisiacal Protection: Exploring Governance In Sustainable Spaces, Rylee Stanton
Paradisiacal Protection: Exploring Governance In Sustainable Spaces, Rylee Stanton
Honors College Theses
Biosphere reserves exist officially as “learning places for sustainable development,” yet they also embody an attempt to bring together ecological governance with market-based and localized solutions to the problem of economic development (UNESCO, 2020). This thesis investigates the conditions under which biosphere reserves became reimagined as an all-encompassing solution to such a diverse set of global governance challenges. I explore the relationship between biosphere reserves and the evolving discourse on sustainable development within global governance. Drawing on Foucault-inspired literature on governmentality and “technologies of governance,” I examine the practices, discourses, and subjects that have made biosphere reserves visible and governable …

Zoomer Generation: Used Car Automobile Purchasing Behaviors, Scott E. Whitaker, Joe Spencer, Giovanni Calise
AMTP Proceedings 2024
There is a growing trend of online automobile purchasing that is altering the relationship between consumers and automobile dealerships. Consumers are more informed and seek a larger variety of inventory and options when shopping for used vehicles. The online marketplace provides a viable alternative to local dealerships who have hereto dominated much of the market. This research shows the current generation of Zoomers is helping to drive this trend which has significant marketing implications toward the industry. There remains a gap in the academic body of knowledge examining this behavior in relation to large online purchases such as automobiles. This …

Cookies And Calamari: Squid Game’S “Dalgona” And Cutting Shapes From Its Impact On Korean Product Purchase And Travel Intentions, Wei Wang, Patrick Tyson, Haeden Overby
AMTP Proceedings 2024
This study explores individuals’ perceptions and attitudes toward Korean popular (henceforth referenced as Kpop) culture. Additionally, this study also aims to assess the impact of Kpop culture on consumers’ Korean product purchase and travel behaviors. Self-construal theory and social identity theory – being applied at individual and collective levels, respectively – will be employed within a qualitative, semi-structured, and inductive approach, an arrangement based around the game of “Dalgona” as seen in the Squid Game Korean Drama (henceforth referenced as K-Dramas). Study data may lend itself to both expansion of theoretical understanding regarding the study model and progression of marketer …

Effects Of Uncertainty Avoidance On Film-Motivated Tourists' Perceptions Of Destination Image, Place Attachment, And Intentions, Patrick Tyson, Wei Wang
AMTP Proceedings 2024
In an attempt to increase understanding of such film-motivated traveler bases, this study will apply self-congruence, film, and culture factors within a touristic background. This background, coming from a cross-cultural analysis between the Brazilian and Japanese episodes from the Netflix docuseries Street Food, will allow for exploration and analysis of the following research question: How does uncertainty avoidance affect the relationship between film-motivated tourists’ perceptions of destination image, place attachment, and travel intentions?
Study purposes include 1) examining mediation effects of place attachment in relationship between self-congruity theory and travel behavioral intentions and 2) evaluating moderation effects of film …
Puros Técnicos And Luchadores Rudos: Debating The New Cultural History Among Latin Americanists, Carl Friesenhahn
Puros Técnicos And Luchadores Rudos: Debating The New Cultural History Among Latin Americanists, Carl Friesenhahn
Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History
This essay dives into the debate and surrounding context of a special issue of the Hispanic American Historical Review. It was on the new cultural history—its usefulness, its methods, and its relation to truth. I argue that the new cultural historians eventually vanquished their critics and internalized their methods and epistemology within historians of Latin America at large. Stemming from earlier texts, the special issue of the HAHR is the most revealing collection of texts on the philosophical foundations of the new cultural history. It showcases scholarly activity from supporters and detractors of the novel movement with considerable focus on …
Does Where We Live Matter To Oral Health? Tensions Between Rural Older Adults’ Concept Of Community And Health Individualism, Swaha Pattanaik, April M. Schueths Dr., Raymona H. Lawrence, Bettye A. Apenteng, Georgia Dounis
Sociology & Anthropology: Faculty Publications
Oral health is essential to overall health; however, structural obstacles influence older rural residents' oral health outcomes, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds in the South. Poor oral health is typically attributed to individual choices, shifting the focus from the inconspicuous community influences, making it more difficult for older rural people to obtain oral healthcare. This qualitative study explores how older adults in rural Georgia understand the community's role in shaping their oral health. Twenty-two older adults were interviewed from five rural communities in southeast Georgia. Participants defined their community in geographic terms. Community barriers and self-reliance emerged as themes of …

From Lived Experiences To Social Activism: Latino Fraternity Brothers Critical Service To The Latinx Community, Regina L. Suriel, James Martinez, Christian Bello Escobar, Jamie L. Workman
Journal of Higher Education & Student Affairs
Colleges and universities are seeing growth of Latinx students actively engaged in Greek life. In this study, six Latino participants share their testimonios as members of different Chapters of a Latinx Greek Letter Organization (LGLO) nestled within Predominantly White Institutions located in the state of Georgia, USA. Informed by LatCrit theory, this qualitative study uses member’s testimonios to shed light on their varied and sometimes politically charged and racist lived experiences. The researchers draw on these experiences to show how the LGLO supported these members’ character and leadership development and their desire and commitment to critical service and socially just …

A Qualitative Exploration Of Spousal Labor Migration And The Postpartum Experiences Of Women In Nepal, Sandhya Lohani
A Qualitative Exploration Of Spousal Labor Migration And The Postpartum Experiences Of Women In Nepal, Sandhya Lohani
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Labor migration is a prevalent phenomenon in Nepal, with many men leaving the country searching for employment opportunities, often leaving their families behind. This study explores the impact of this migration on women's postpartum experiences, including factors such as emotional support, financial strain, and childcare responsibilities. A qualitative approach was used, conducting interviews of 31(16 women with labor-migrant spouses and 15 with non-migrant spouses) to gather insights into the unique challenges faced by the two groups of women during the postpartum period. The findings highlight the significant differences in postpartum experiences between women with migrant spouses and those without, shedding …
From Expectations To Experiences: Students’ Perceptions Of Specifications Grading In Higher Education, Adriana Streifer, Michael Palmer, Jessica Taggart
From Expectations To Experiences: Students’ Perceptions Of Specifications Grading In Higher Education, Adriana Streifer, Michael Palmer, Jessica Taggart
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Specifications grading is a form of alternative grading that emphasizes transparency, low stakes, student learning, and equity. It has attracted practitioners for its potential to enhance student motivation, and to remedy several challenges of traditional grading. Specifications grading has become increasingly popular, yet little is known about students' perceptions of and experiences with it. We examined students’ predicted and actual experiences of specifications grading in courses across several disciplines at a research-intensive, public university in the United States. Particular attention was paid to how students perceive specifications grading to influence their motivations to learn. Most students expressed positive attitudes toward …
Queer Baltimore: An Unlikely Home For All, Anna K. Trull
Queer Baltimore: An Unlikely Home For All, Anna K. Trull
Honors College Theses
At the time Baltimore’s queer community emerged, much of the country did not accept anyone who identified as gay. Appearing during the 1940s, gay bars then paradoxically expanded following the Pepper Hill raid in 1955. The thesis builds upon the work of Lucas Hilderbrand (Duke UP, 2023) and Susan Ferentinos (“Maryland LGBTQ Historic Context Study,” 2020) to argue that the physical infrastructure of gay bars and the neighborhoods that developed around them drove the creation of a public culture in Baltimore out of LGBTQ subcultures. It uses a geospatial database based on oral histories and newspaper archives to analyze neighborhoods …
