Scouting For A Tomboy: Gender-Bending Behaviors In Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird, Laura Hakala Jan 2010

Scouting For A Tomboy: Gender-Bending Behaviors In Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird, Laura Hakala

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

In Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, Scout Finch challenges gender stereotypes in her determination to remain a tomboy. Scout interacts with five parental characters (Atticus, Calpurnia, Aunt Alexandra, Miss Maudie, and Boo Radley), who offer models for Scout's behaviors. Though primarily unconventional in terms of gender, these parental figures fluctuate between ideals, demonstrating that gender is an unstable standard that alters according to each individual. Lee depicts characters who resist conforming to the paradigms of masculinity and femininity and instead fill middle positions between the stereotypes, as Scout's tomboyism exemplifies. After encountering different models, Scout consistently exhibits these genderbending …

At The Intersection Of Politics & Consumption: A Review Of Ethical Shopping In America, Julie M. Pharr Jan 2010

At The Intersection Of Politics & Consumption: A Review Of Ethical Shopping In America, Julie M. Pharr

AMTP Proceedings 2010

This paper condenses the existing literature on ethical shopping in the United States with the goal of providing an up-to-date review of the topic. It profiles the ethical shopper and distinguishes the various institutions and instruments of political consumerism evident in the Fair Trade movement. It also provides recommendations for more rigorous study of moral consumer behavior and implications for implementing fair trade marketing strategies.

A Tale Of Two Worlds: A Second Life For Higher Education?, Daniel Demaiolo, Donna Walsh Jan 2010

A Tale Of Two Worlds: A Second Life For Higher Education?, Daniel Demaiolo, Donna Walsh

AMTP Proceedings 2010

This exploratory research investigates the virtual world industry, explanations for its growth and emerging trends for entrepreneurial ventures and marketing communications. It then explores the effectiveness of operating and promoting higher education in Second Life. Results illustrate consumers 17-24 years old still rely on traditional media for information related to higher education. Developing a business model and marketing mix in Second Life, that often features uncensored content, may not be an appropriate method of connecting with the target demographic. Benefits of utilizing virtual worlds are considered; further research is recommended; suggestions are offered to increase Second Life’s viability in higher …

Sotl In Online Education: Strategies And Practices For Using New Media For Teaching And Learning Online, Gila Kurtz, Barry Sponder Jan 2010

Sotl In Online Education: Strategies And Practices For Using New Media For Teaching And Learning Online, Gila Kurtz, Barry Sponder

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Over the past two decades the research and dissemination of the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) in higher education has sought to improve the quality of the academic experience in face-to-face courses, online classes, and even on virtual reality campuses. Many scholars, including the authors of this essay, have utilized this public discourse to help inspire their practices and then subsequently contribute to the SoTL literature and research. What ideas from the SoTL literature did we find useful for using new media when teaching online? What new strategies and practices have we added to our teaching repertoire? How have …

Stream Invertebrate Responses To A Catastrophic Decline In Consumer Diversity, Jose Checo Colón-Gaud, Matt R. Whiles, Karen R. Lips, Catherine M. Pringle, Susan Kilham, Roberto Brenes, Scot D. Peterson Jan 2010

Stream Invertebrate Responses To A Catastrophic Decline In Consumer Diversity, Jose Checo Colón-Gaud, Matt R. Whiles, Karen R. Lips, Catherine M. Pringle, Susan Kilham, Roberto Brenes, Scot D. Peterson

Biology: Faculty Publications

Tadpoles are often abundant and diverse consumers in headwater streams in the Neotropics. However, their populations are declining catastrophically in many regions, in part because of a chytrid fungal pathogen. These declines are occurring along a moving disease front in Central America and offer the rare opportunity to quantify the consequences of a sudden, dramatic decline in consumer diversity in a natural system. As part of the Tropical Amphibian Declines in Streams (TADS) project, we examined stream macroinvertebrate assemblage structure and production for 2 y in 4 stream reaches at 2 sites in Panama. One site initially had healthy amphibians …

Art And Memory: An Examination Of The Learning Benefits Of Visual-Art Exposure, James Tyler Rosier Jan 2010

Art And Memory: An Examination Of The Learning Benefits Of Visual-Art Exposure, James Tyler Rosier

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Past research has indicated that art education can be beneficial to students' education, possibly through beneficial effects related to learning and memory. Although some prior research has explored effects of art education for children, relatively little research has investigated beneficial effects of art in relation to adult learners. The aim of the current study was to explore whether a beneficial relationship exists between art and memory for adults in the context of an experimental study. Participants were randomly assigned to one of four conditions: Engaging in creative art, viewing art, discriminating among visually presented shapes, and writing a description of …

Active Learning In Introductory Economics: Do Myeconlab And Aplia Make Any Difference?, Trien T. Nguyen, Angela Trimarchi Jan 2010

Active Learning In Introductory Economics: Do Myeconlab And Aplia Make Any Difference?, Trien T. Nguyen, Angela Trimarchi

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This paper reports experiment results of teaching large classes of introductory economics with modern learning technology such as MyEconLab or Aplia. This new technology emerges partially in response to the enrollment pressure currently facing many institutions of higher education. Among other things, the technology provides an integrated online teaching and learning environment that allows active learning through student direct participation in the learning process as well as interaction with their instructor, peers, and the outside Internet. Our results showed that, for the classes in the experiment, modern learning technology could make a difference in helping students improve their class mark …
