Impacts Of Laurel Wilt Disease On Redbay (Persea Borbonia) Population Structure And Forest Communities In The Coastal Plain Of Georgia, Usa, Kimberly S. Spiegel Jul 2010

Impacts Of Laurel Wilt Disease On Redbay (Persea Borbonia) Population Structure And Forest Communities In The Coastal Plain Of Georgia, Usa, Kimberly S. Spiegel

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Laurel wilt disease (LWD), a fungal disease vectored by the non-native redbay ambrosia beetle (Xyleborus glabratus), has caused mortality of redbay (Persea borbonia) in the Coastal Plain of Georgia, USA, since 2003. This disease has spread 30-100 km/year and little research has evaluated its impacts on redbay population structure and forest communities. Healthy and infested populations of redbay and their associated communities were compared in five sites infested with LWD and three un-infested sites in five counties in Georgia. Tree, shrub, and herb layers were sampled separately to determine redbay population structure and community composition and structure. Only 8% of …

Academic Analytics And Data Mining In Higher Education, Paul Baepler, Cynthia James Murdoch Jul 2010

Academic Analytics And Data Mining In Higher Education, Paul Baepler, Cynthia James Murdoch

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The emerging fields of academic analytics and educational data mining are rapidly producing new possibilities for gathering, analyzing, and presenting student data. Faculty might soon be able to use these new data sources as guides for course redesign and as evidence for implementing new assessments and lines of communication between instructors and students. This essay links the concepts of academic analytics, data mining in higher education, and course management system audits and suggests how these techniques and the data they produce might be useful to those who practice the scholarship of teaching and learning.

The Power Of The Picturebook: Examining Aesthetics And Critical Literacy For Imagination, Margaret Parker Helmly Jul 2010

The Power Of The Picturebook: Examining Aesthetics And Critical Literacy For Imagination, Margaret Parker Helmly

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This study was to explore the notion of the power of the picturebook. My intent was to read picturebooks aloud with my reading community not for information or to entertain but to connect the picturebook with the experiences of both the reader and the listener and then to come away from the reading someone new. Ten Gifted and Talented, (GT) fifth grade students, five girls and five boys, participated in the study. This group was predominantly white, middle class. After our read aloud session, the reading community then proceeded to examine both the text and the illustrations aesthetically and critically …

Rh Glycoprotein As An Ammonia Transport Molecule, Matthew B. Phillips Jul 2010

Rh Glycoprotein As An Ammonia Transport Molecule, Matthew B. Phillips

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Fish use their gills to excrete ammonia in order to eliminate nitrogenous waste. We hypothesize that this mechanism is accomplished by one or more transport proteins in the Rh glycoprotein (RhxG) family. Longhorn sculpin (Myoxocephalus octodecemspinosus) cDNA was amplified using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and then the PCR products were visualized on an agarose gel. The cDNA from the gel bands was then sequenced and the gene sequence fragments were assembled and completed by rapid amplification of the cDNA ends (RACE). By this process we have obtained large portions of the gene sequences of the four known paralogues located in …

Hiv And Hepatocellular And Esophageal Carcinomas Related To Consumption Of Mycotoxin-Prone Foods In Sub-Saharan Africa, Jonathan H. Williams, Jessica A. Grubbs, Jerry W. Hiv And Hepatocellular And Esophageal Carcinomas Related To Consumption Of Mycotoxin-Prone Foods In Sub-Saharan Africa, Jonathan H. Williams, Jessica A. Grubbs, Jerry W. Davis, Jia-Sheng Wang, Pauline E. Jolly, Nii-Ayi Ankrah, William O. Ellis, Evans Afriyie-Gyawu, Natalie M. Johnson, Abraham G. Robinson, Timothy D. Phillips

Environmental Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

Background: Promotion of the HIV epidemic by aflatoxin is postulated but not yet established. Sub-Saharan populations commonly consume food contaminated by mycotoxins, particularly aflatoxins (predominantly found in peanut, maize, rice, and cassava) and fumonisins, which occur primarily in maize. Aflatoxin promotes hepatocellular cancer, and fumonisin may promote esophageal cancer.

Objectives: This analysis was undertaken to test the hypotheses that consumption of mycotoxin-prone staple foods is 1) related to the incidence of HIV infection in Africa and 2) related to “signature” cancer rates confirming exposure to aflatoxins and fumonisins.

Design: World Health Organization data for causes of death and the Food …

Getting Up To Speed: Acceleration Strategies In The Florida Scrub Lizard, Sceloporus Woodi, Eric J. Mcelroy, Lance D. Mcbrayer Jul 2010

Getting Up To Speed: Acceleration Strategies In The Florida Scrub Lizard, Sceloporus Woodi, Eric J. Mcelroy, Lance D. Mcbrayer

Biology: Faculty Publications

Small animals typically rely on quick bursts and intermittent pauses when moving in the wild. Hence, the study of acceleration capacity is important for understanding the ecology and evolution of locomotor performance. In this study, we investigate intraspecific variation in the acceleration capacity of a small lizard (Sceloporus woodi). To quantify animal acceleration performance, the momentum‐impulse theorem is applied to data collected from high‐speed video recordings of individuals accelerating from a standstill and over a subsequent distance of 0.4 m. Unlike earlier studies, the momentum‐impulse approach allows one to directly and precisely quantify the per step contribution to …

Behavioral And Reproductive Plasticity In Eastern Mosquitofish (Gambusia Holbrooki) In Response To Predatory Cues, Carolyn Vanzwoll May 2010

Behavioral And Reproductive Plasticity In Eastern Mosquitofish (Gambusia Holbrooki) In Response To Predatory Cues, Carolyn Vanzwoll

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Olfaction in fishes can be an important mechanism in determining the level of predation risk. Many fishes possess alarm signaling systems, wherein an individual can detect injured conspecifics via olfaction and respond behaviorally to the presence of a predator. The superorder Ostariophysi exhibits a fright reaction to injured conspecifics, characterized by specialized cells and alarm substances. I tested if a live-bearing non-ostariophysan, Gambusia holbrooki, exhibited a similar behavioral response to its injured conspecifics. I also examined the effects of exposure to this and other predatory cues during a single pregnancy cycle. I hypothesized that immediate exposure to the cues would …

Size Correlations Between Sucking Lice And Their Hosts Including A Test Of Harrison's Rule, Sherri M. Cannon May 2010

Size Correlations Between Sucking Lice And Their Hosts Including A Test Of Harrison's Rule, Sherri M. Cannon

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Ectoparasite size can be influenced by many factors; one is host size. Harrison's rule states that larger hosts typically have larger parasites. In this study, sucking lice (Insecta: Anoplura) were used to test this rule. Sucking lice should provide a good test for this rule because they are generally host-specific and because, as a group, they parasitize hosts of different sizes. Also, sucking lice use their tibio-tarsal claws to grasp host hairs, therefore, correlations between claw size and host hair diameters were also tested. Raw analyses including 206 species of slide-mounted sucking lice from throughout the world, followed by analyses …

The Need For Revision: Curriculum, Literature, And The 21st Century, David P. Owen May 2010

The Need For Revision: Curriculum, Literature, And The 21st Century, David P. Owen

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation argues that curriculum, especially as it is practiced in high school education, needs revision, that literature is the place to start that revision, and that literature class itself needs to be revised to incorporate a much broader understanding of the texts to be studied so that such work might take place there. This dissertation also recognizes that the work of teaching literature and humanities classes is especially difficult today, and argues that this difficulty has dire ramifications for all teachers and researchers in and of public education, and particularly for the field of curriculum studies. This work argues …

Cultivating Global Citizenship? Life In Transit, Jeffrey Matthew Palis May 2010

Cultivating Global Citizenship? Life In Transit, Jeffrey Matthew Palis

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This study explores my border crossing experience among and between cultures. Although a large portion of my narrative addresses my time living as a Fulbright grantee in Latvia, this study is much more than a solitary six-month sojourn. It is a lifelong journey and an attempt to understand what is entailed when we cross physical, cultural, linguistic, socio-political, and intellectual borders. Four bodies of research provide the theoretical framework for the study: critical theory (Apple, 2001; Aronowitz and Giroux, 1993; Ayers, 2006; Chomsky, 2004, 2006; McLaren, 1997, 2005; Giroux, 1992; Zinn, 1980, 2007), exile and borderland pedagogy (Anzaldúa, 1987; Freire …

A Nonparametric Method For Ascertaining Change Points In Regression Regimes, Alfreda N. Rogers May 2010

A Nonparametric Method For Ascertaining Change Points In Regression Regimes, Alfreda N. Rogers

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Of interest is the specific model called the joinpoint two regime regression or broken line model composed of one regression line and a horizontal ray. This is a very restricted but highly useful subset of the well-researched change point problem. The usual approach to a more general model was first presented by Quandt (1958) who found the maximum likelihood estimates of the slope, intercept and joinpoint by assuming that the error terms are generated under the usual assumptions, that is, from a normal distribution with constant variance and are uncorrelated. We develop a method that does not rely on this …

Sources And Consequences Of Ecological Intraspecific Variation In The Florida Scrub Lizard (Sceloporus Woodi), Steven C. Williams May 2010

Sources And Consequences Of Ecological Intraspecific Variation In The Florida Scrub Lizard (Sceloporus Woodi), Steven C. Williams

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Sceloporus woodi is a small, sexually dimorphic Iguanid lizard endemic to dry xeric habitats in Florida. This species is most often found in sand-pine scrub habitats, but also inhabits relic long-leaf pine "islands" within the scrub of the Ocala National Forest in north central Florida. In the current study I investigated seasonal and sexual variation in foraging behavior of S. woodi and compared microhabitat use, behavior, diet, morphology, and ectoparasite load at a pine island site to S. woodi in scrub habitats. No variation in movement patterns existed between seasons and sexes. However significant seasonal and sexual differences did exist …

Invasive Interactions, Jennifer Galusha May 2010

Invasive Interactions, Jennifer Galusha

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This paper discusses the body of work developed for my thesis, Invasive Interactions, which represents abstracted trees as a metaphor for humanistic situations. Through my forms I will discuss equality, abuse, isolation, community, and at the fundamental level, nature itself. Invasive Interactions was created to evoke a subtle awareness in the subconscious of the viewer and to emphasize our world's diverse natural landscape and its fragility.

Objects Of Attraction, Jessica Stewart May 2010

Objects Of Attraction, Jessica Stewart

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The work in Objects of Attraction is a culmination of the skills and experiences that I have acquired while at Georgia Southern University. The pieces are abstractions of natural flowers and seedpods that stem from my experiences in South Georgia woods. These brightly colored ceramic works are a reflection of the joy and wonder that I receive from the natural world. Colors, textures and forms found in nature are the driving force behind my work; I feel that so many of these natural attributes are often ignored. By creating work based on nature I strive to inspire viewers to take …
