Broadening Conceptions Of What Constitutes Knowledge And Evidence In Sotl, Sharon Thomas
Broadening Conceptions Of What Constitutes Knowledge And Evidence In Sotl, Sharon Thomas
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
In the two decades since the publication of Boyer’s (1990) seminal work, the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) has earned an increasingly venerable reputation as a legitimate area of scholarship. What remains contentious, however, is the form that such scholarship takes. Despite the publication of numerous books and articles lauding alternative epistemologies, SoTL advocates regularly have to defend their approaches. The purpose of this essay is to encourage higher education practitioners to broaden their conceptions of what constitutes knowledge and evidence in SoTL. An epistemological discussion, it aims to provide a strong theoretical framework within which SoTL practitioners can …

Impact Of Giving Students A Choice Of Homework Assignments In An Introductory Computer Science Class, Steven Fulton, Dino Schweitzer
Impact Of Giving Students A Choice Of Homework Assignments In An Introductory Computer Science Class, Steven Fulton, Dino Schweitzer
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Student assignments have long been an integral part of many university level computer science courses to reinforce material covered in class with practical exercises. For years, researchers have studied ways to improve such student assignments by making them more interesting, applicable, and valuable to the student with a goal of improving learning outcomes by increasing student appeal. One often studied way to improve the learning outcome is by allowing students a choice in assignments. To ensure fairness for all students in providing such a choice, care must be taken to ensure assignment “equality” by ensuring an equal learning experience for …

Developing A Statistically Valid And Practically Useful Student Evaluation Instrument, Jeffrey S. Skowronek, Bruce K. Friesen, Heather Masonjones
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
The current article presents the findings on the development of a student evaluation instrument in which course evaluation is directly tied to student learning outcomes. With a committee consisting of instructors from six distinct disciplines brought together as part of a working group for this purpose, the instrument was developed utilizing research on the components of effective teaching and how these components impacted student learning. The instrument was tested at two time points, once via pen and paper (n=340 students) and the other online (n=2636 students). Factor Analysis resulted in one latent factor both times. The instrument also had high …

Analysis Of The Performance Of Peanut Fame In A Single Cylinder Idi Engine And Investigations Of Neat Methyl Ester Influence On Fuel Quality, Jeffery Lewis
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Author's abstract: To meet evolving standards set forth by the U.S. EPA and U.S. Energy Policy it is necessary to consider a variety of feedstock for biofuels synthesis and to understand the role individual fatty acids contribute to the overall performance. It is the belief of the authors that excess peanut production would provide an excellent source for high quality biodiesel feedstock, and the complete property and combustion analysis of the fatty acid components will provide insight for future biofuel developments. The preliminary investigations of the project focused on the combustion performance and thermal efficiency of peanut FAME and its …

Environmental Health Sciences: Faculty Publications
This review describes the biology, ecology, and epidemiology of known human pathogens in the family Anaplasmataceae that are transmitted by ticks and belong to the genus Anaplasma and genus Ehrlichia.
