Writing The Female Body In Alvarez's In The Time Of The Butterflies, Darren K. Broome Jun 2011

Writing The Female Body In Alvarez's In The Time Of The Butterflies, Darren K. Broome

The Coastal Review

Julia Alvarez in In the Time of the Butterflies utilizes the female body and sexuality to combat male dominated rhetoric. The use of the female body retrieves women’s forgotten role as subjects instead of objects as seen in male-oriented novel. Expressing sexuality in a way that is determined by women, she discovers new means of verbal or written expression. The female body emerges as a form of expression in Butterflies which at times is connected to one of the characters’ revolutionary participation.

Chaos As Ecological And Autochthonous Expression: An Ecocritical Study Of La Vorágine, Danion L. Doman Jun 2011

Chaos As Ecological And Autochthonous Expression: An Ecocritical Study Of La Vorágine, Danion L. Doman

The Coastal Review

This article utilizes principles of ecological criticism to provide new readings of both the role and presentation of nature in José Eustasio Rivera’s novel La vorágine. Whereas critics have heretofore focused on Rivera’s memorable subjective descriptions of the Amazon jungle, the present study foregrounds the rich diversity of the real organisms represented in these depictions. In addition, this essay explores the connections between the text’s core trope, chaos, and the current ecological and social scientific understanding of the ecology and the human history of the Amazon Basin.

The Investigation Of Combustion And Emissions Of Jp8 Fuel In An Auxiliary Power Unit, April Covington Jun 2011

The Investigation Of Combustion And Emissions Of Jp8 Fuel In An Auxiliary Power Unit, April Covington

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The US Army Single Fuel Forward policy mandates that deployed vehicles must be able to operate with aviation fuel JP-8. It is for this reason that it is vital that an investigation into the impact of JP-8 on a diesel engine performance be conducted. The author investigated the injection, combustion, and performance of JP-8, 20-50% by weight in diesel no. 2 mixtures in a small indirect injection, 77mm separate three vortex combustion chamber engine, with a high compression ratio, in order to evaluate its' effectiveness for application in Auxiliary Power Units (APUs). The new fuel mixtures were created at room …

Between Morality And Myth: A Parodic Visual Manifesto, Patricia J. Quilichini May 2011

Between Morality And Myth: A Parodic Visual Manifesto, Patricia J. Quilichini

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Acting on the belief that art communicates, that an image speaks all languages, these works were created as a visual manifesto responding satirically to the absurd way in which myths are elevated to the status of moral values. The photographic works created for this thesis challenge long held beliefs and emotions that associate sex with shame and guilt, and that grow out of the moral traditions we have inherited. Judeo-Christian traditions and religious beliefs have created widely unchallenged social/moral constructs, which regard sexuality and sexual awareness as sinful and woman as subservient to the moral authority constructed by men. I …

Contamination Running Deep: Oral Histories Of Environmental Racism, Injustice, And Outrage Of One Family In A Southern African-American Community, Deborah M. Dean May 2011

Contamination Running Deep: Oral Histories Of Environmental Racism, Injustice, And Outrage Of One Family In A Southern African-American Community, Deborah M. Dean

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This is an inquiry into oral histories of five members of my family that are residents of a southern African American community, Hyde Park located in Augusta, Georgia. These members of my family, Eunice Jordan, Sharon Wells, Ernest Jordan, DeWanna Jordan, and Darius Jordan, have endured the environmental contamination and social injustices. These family members are children and grandchildren of Willie and Lillian Wells who moved to Hyde Park in 1950 with the intention of living the "American Dream" and creating a legacy for future generations that began with owning their land and home. Since then the family has learned …

Feasibility Of Integration Of Peanut Based Bio-Diesel Into A Mainstream Market, Dustin Hogan May 2011

Feasibility Of Integration Of Peanut Based Bio-Diesel Into A Mainstream Market, Dustin Hogan

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

There has been increased emphasis on alternate energy sources in recent years. This interest stems from diminishing supplies of fossil fuels combined with an ever-increasing global demand for energy. Biodiesel constitutes one such source of alternate energy. It is a renewable diesel fuel substitute that can be manufactured from a variety of naturally occurring oils and fats. Several methods of production have been tried and successfully implemented to develop biodiesel as a viable energy source. However, this research has been confined primarily within the auspices of a research laboratory. The mass appeal of biodiesel and its viability as a dominant …

Dynamic Postural Control In Individuals With Multiple Concussions, David Krazeise May 2011

Dynamic Postural Control In Individuals With Multiple Concussions, David Krazeise

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

There are an estimated 1.6 - 3.8 million sports-related concussions which occur in athletics annually in the United States; however, the actual rate may be higher, as many studies suggest that nearly half of the concussions that occur may go unreported. Recent evidence suggests life-long behavioral and cognitive impairments in individuals with multiple, usually 3 or more, concussions; however to date there has been limited assessment of motor impairments in this population. The transitional movement of gait initiation, literally the act of starting to walk, has effectively identified impairments in postural control in a wide range of neurologically impaired populations …

In Chapter One I discuss the autobiographical origins of my artwork, its philosophical foundations, and the creative process I developed during my graduate studies. Chapter Two explores artistic influences on my work and historical context in which my …

The Sun Also Sets: British Authors And The Death Of The Empire, Brian Butler May 2011

The Sun Also Sets: British Authors And The Death Of The Empire, Brian Butler

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This thesis traces the decline of the British Empire through the perspectives of prominent British authors, beginning with Rudyard Kipling's Kim, which establishes the height of the British Empire. Thereafter, the Empire's decline is incisively chronicled through the various catalysts that contributed to the overall demise of the Empire: E.M Forster illustrates the impact of the introduction of British women into India in A Passage to India; George Orwell demonstrates the significance of burgeoning native dissent and the empowerment of the compradore class in Burma in Burmese Days; Anthony Burgess offers an exhaustive fictional meditation of the zenith of native …

Value Of Professional Sport Teams In The Community: Reexamining The Measurement Properties Of The Community Impact Scale, Dae Hyun Kim, James J. Zhang, Yong Jae Ko Apr 2011

Value Of Professional Sport Teams In The Community: Reexamining The Measurement Properties Of The Community Impact Scale, Dae Hyun Kim, James J. Zhang, Yong Jae Ko

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

The Community Impact Scale was developed by Zhang et al. (1996) to measure essential value dimensions of professional sports in the community. The original scale includes 45 items under eight factors (Community Solidarity, Public Behavior, Social Equity, Pastime Ecstasy, Health Awareness, Individual Quality, Excellence Pursuit, and Business Opportunity). To further ensure its usefulness for theoretical and practical applications, this study re-examined measurement properties of the scale through conducting a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Research participants (N = 349) were residents of three major metropolitan areas, who responded to a survey in various community settings. With some modifications and eliminations of …

Polynitroxylated Pegylated Hemoglobin: A Novel Neuroprotective Hemoglobin For Acute Volume-Limited Fluid Resuscitation After Combined Traumatic Brain Injury And Hemorrhagic Hypotension In Mice, David K. Shellington, Lina Du, Xianren Wu, Jennifer Exo, Vincent A. Vagni, Li Ma, Keri Janesko-Feldman, Robert S. B. Clark, Hülya Bayır, C. Edward Dixon, Larry W. Jenkins, Carleton J. C. Hsia, Patrick M. Kochanek

Physics & Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Objective: Resuscitation of hemorrhagic hypotension after traumatic brain injury is challenging. A hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier may offer advantages. The novel therapeutic hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier, polynitroxylated pegylated hemoglobin (PNPH), may represent a neuroprotective hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier for traumatic brain injury resuscitation.

Hypotheses: 1) PNPH is a unique non-neurotoxic hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier in neuronal culture and is neuroprotective in in vitro neuronal injury models. 2) Resuscitation with PNPH would require less volume to restore mean arterial blood pressure than lactated Ringer's or Hextend and confer neuroprotection in a mouse model of traumatic brain injury plus hemorrhagic hypotension.

Design: Prospective randomized, controlled experimental …
