Making Content Sticky: What To Do When Students Don't Get It Or Can't Remember It, Joanne Billingsley
Making Content Sticky: What To Do When Students Don't Get It Or Can't Remember It, Joanne Billingsley
National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Conference
Do your students struggle with the mountain of new vocabulary they need to master each year? Do you have difficulty getting students to speak, read, and write using academic language? Years of research confirms a direct link between word knowledge and academic success. However, stark gaps in vocabulary knowledge across ethnic groups and income levels still persist. This session will focus on neuroscience based strategies that are proven to accelerate the acquisition of core academic vocabulary and dramatically increasing student opportunities for listening, speaking and writing using academic language. Participants will leave with skills to transform vocabulary lessons into a …

Networked Heterogeneous Systems In A Ros-Enabled Cloud Environment, Christopher Reid
Networked Heterogeneous Systems In A Ros-Enabled Cloud Environment, Christopher Reid
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
It is important in the development of cloud robotics that the challenges presented by transferring computational loads to networked resources are properly addressed. The challenges include network latency, data integrity, security, and privacy. The objective of the present work is to investigate the issues of latency and data integrity in a representative cloud robotics environment. The present work involves setting up a cloud robotics network in an open-source Robot Operating System (ROS) framework and carrying out investigations on the levels of latency and reduction in data integrity as utilization of the network increases. In this study, a virtual datacenter has …

Showing Up Is Half The Battle: Assessing Different Contextualized Learning Tools To Increase The Performance In Introductory Computer Science Courses, Christine Rolka, Anja Remshagen
Showing Up Is Half The Battle: Assessing Different Contextualized Learning Tools To Increase The Performance In Introductory Computer Science Courses, Christine Rolka, Anja Remshagen
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Contextualized learning is considered beneficial for student success. In this article, we assess the impact of context-based learning tools on student grade performance in an introductory computer science course. In particular, we investigate two central questions: (1) does the use context-based learning tools, robots and animations, affect student performance? (2) How do age, gender, and ethnicity impact performance? To explore these questions, we compare the impact of educational robots in conjunction with animations against a second group of students who use only animations, while controlling for the effects of gender and ethnicity. We find that the addition of robots did …
The Sensitivity Of A Test Based On Spearman's Rho In Cross-Correlation Change Point Problems, Congjian Liu
The Sensitivity Of A Test Based On Spearman's Rho In Cross-Correlation Change Point Problems, Congjian Liu
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
In change point problems, there are three main questions that researchers are interested in. First of all, is there a change point or not? Second, when does the change point occur in a time series? Third, how quickly can we detect the change point? In this thesis, we first explain what a change point is, and what a cross-correlation is. We then discuss prior research in this area. Then we discuss and examine a test based on Spearman's rho, introduced by Wied and Dehling (2011), which tests the null hypothesis of no change point, and compare the change point we …
The Obama Effect On African American High School Males, Aundra Simmons Vaughn
The Obama Effect On African American High School Males, Aundra Simmons Vaughn
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
“Of all the challenges in education today, I can think of none greater than the challenge of motivating, educating, and empowering black male learners” (Kafele, 2012, p. 67). Research documents the struggles of African American males in society and education. There is concern among educators for role models for young people to emulate (Lines, 2001). To explore President Obama as a role model and the impact of his historic election on African American recent high school male graduates, a qualitative research study was used. A phenomenological design helped described the “essence” of the phenomenon— the election of an African American …
The Role Of Artificial Structures In Facilitating Range Expansion Of The Introduced Barnacle Megabalanus Coccopoma In The Southeastern U.S.A., Alicia M. Reigel
The Role Of Artificial Structures In Facilitating Range Expansion Of The Introduced Barnacle Megabalanus Coccopoma In The Southeastern U.S.A., Alicia M. Reigel
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The barnacle Megabalanus coccopoma is a recent invader of the southeastern U.S.A. from the tropical eastern Pacific. In Georgia, M. coccopoma populations along the immediate coastline often suffer extensive mortality during the winter, but population rebuilding is common after these events suggesting that there may be nearby larval sources. I investigated the hypothesis that artificial structures (i.e., buoys, towers), occurring far enough offshore of Georgia for water temperatures to be moderated by the Gulf Stream, provide refuges for breeding adults of M. coccopoma and can serve as the larval source. I investigated this hypothesis by first developing thirteen microsatellite primer …

Functional Violence In Martin Mcdonagh's The Lieutenant Of Inishmore And The Pillowman, Lindsay Shalom
Functional Violence In Martin Mcdonagh's The Lieutenant Of Inishmore And The Pillowman, Lindsay Shalom
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
While Martin McDonagh’s plays have engendered laughter, disgust, and fear, he might be best known as part of a long line of Irish playwrights who faced controversy due to their art. Much like Synge, Shaw, and O’Casey, McDonagh has faced criticism and even outrage due to the violence and misunderstood portrayals of the Irish in his plays. Though the violence in plays like The Pillowman and The Lieutenant of Inishmore has been labeled gratuitous, we might better understand the purpose of that violence by examining them in light of Michel Foucault’s concepts of knowledge and power. Foucault’s approaches best highlight …
Paper 2: Using Ti-Nspire To Engage Preservice Mathematics Teachers In An Exploratory Geometry Module, Alesia D. Mickle, Pier A. Junor Clarke
Paper 2: Using Ti-Nspire To Engage Preservice Mathematics Teachers In An Exploratory Geometry Module, Alesia D. Mickle, Pier A. Junor Clarke
Georgia Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (GAMTE) Annual Conference (2007-2019)
In the mathematics classroom, most preservice mathematics teachers possess basic skills to use technology as an instructional strategy in communicating content standards. However, today’s demands for preservice teachers to engage in a variety of “best teaching practices” in their preservice teaching and edTPA requirements can oftentimes place the acquisition of technical skills and integration of new technology in content curriculum far from the forefront of their minds. Ertmer, Conklin, Lewandowski, Osika, Selo, and Wignall (2003) acknowledged preservice teachers’ desires to gain the adequate technical skills necessary to use technology in teachers’ daily tasks of facilitating and managing their classrooms. They …
The Truth About Lying: Does A Lie Cause Ego Depletion?, Shannon A. Summerlin Jr
The Truth About Lying: Does A Lie Cause Ego Depletion?, Shannon A. Summerlin Jr
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Ego depletion is defined as the loss of self-control resulting from prior acts of self-control. Several tasks cause ego depletion, including effortful cognitive tasks. I proposed that lying would create ego depletion due to the cognitive control associated with telling a lie. I further anticipated that the potential embarrassment associated with getting "caught" in a lie would cause additional ego depletion among participants. In the proposed study, we asked participants to lie to a confederate and either gave them the impression they would be caught in the lie or gave them a clear indication that they would not be caught …
