The Jungle Down The Street, The Town Across The Bridge, All Is Very Well, Taylor B. Tyson
The Jungle Down The Street, The Town Across The Bridge, All Is Very Well, Taylor B. Tyson
Honors College Theses
The Jungle Down the Street, the Town Across the Bridge, All is Very Well is a series of short, nonfiction essays attempting to paint several portraits—regional, ecological, familial, and personal. Focused around the town of Apalachicola, Florida, it addresses themes of family, folklore, tragedy, and the “New Sublime,” or the feeling of wonder at the beauty that precedes an inevitable end. The piece attempts to blend multiple narrative and thematic arcs through the use of humor, anecdote, and historical research.
Using The Stroop Effect To Examine The Effect Of Words To Which Humans Are Sensitive On Cognitive Conflict, Stacia Fritz
Using The Stroop Effect To Examine The Effect Of Words To Which Humans Are Sensitive On Cognitive Conflict, Stacia Fritz
Honors College Theses
The purpose of experiment one was to test the effects of drink consumed (glucose, artificial sweetener, or water) and stimuli (food or non-food) on cognitive conflict. Glucose has been known to better cognitive functioning, and preoccupation with food worsens cognitive functioning on a food-related task. We hypothesized that participants who received glucose and non-food stimuli will perform best on the cognitive tests, and participants who received aspartame and food-stimuli will perform worst on the cognitive tests. Participants were each given an 8 oz. drink to consume, shown six minutes of stimuli, performed an “X-word” Stroop test, shown six more minutes …
"That Flesh-Locked Sea Of Silence”: Language, Gender, And Sexuality In Beckett’S Short Fiction, Emily F. Oliver
"That Flesh-Locked Sea Of Silence”: Language, Gender, And Sexuality In Beckett’S Short Fiction, Emily F. Oliver
Honors College Theses
This paper asserts the interconnectedness of language, gender, and sexuality in the short prose of Samuel Beckett. “Assumption,” “First Love,” and “Enough,” are used as specific examples of Beckett’s fiction, selected because they assist in understanding Beckett’s participation in, and inversion of, the hegemonic privileging of the masculine. This interpretation focuses on the use of gendered language, verbalization as a sexual expression, and the manipulation of the “male” and “female” voice. The analysis is both informed by, and seeks to nuance, the linguistic criticism established by second-wave French feminists Kristeva, Irigaray, and Cixous.

Identification Guide To Larval Stages Of Ticks Of Medical Importance In The Usa, Kymbreana Coley
Honors College Theses
Scanning Electron Micrographs were prepared of four morphologically diagnostic regions (dorsal capitulum, ventral capitulum, scutum, leg coxae) for the larval stage of the 16 species of ixodid (hard) ticks known to parasitize humans in the USA. These species are: Amblyomma americanum, A. maculatum, A. mixtum, A. tuberculatum, Dermacentor albipictus, D. andersoni, D. occidentalis, D. variabilis, Haemaphysalis leporispalustris, Ixodes angustus, I. cookei, I. pacificus, I. scapularis, I. spinipalpis, I. texanus, and Rhipicephalus sanguineus. Based on the morphological characters observed, a dichotomous identification key to ixodid larvae that parasitize humans in the USA was prepared. Common names, hosts and geographical distributions are …

Increased Perception Of Mosquito Problems During A Stormwater Restoration Project, Rosmarie Kelly
Increased Perception Of Mosquito Problems During A Stormwater Restoration Project, Rosmarie Kelly
Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association
In 2008, a plan for improvement of the McDaniel Branch Watershed was prepared for the city of Atlanta, Department of Watershed Management. This included the construction of ponds in a kudzu-covered area at Bowen Circle. There is a perception that wetlands create mosquito problems. In point of fact, most of the vector and nuisance species in Atlanta are either container breeders or floodwater species, and do not breed in ponds. Because there is an average of 5 cases of West Nile virus (WNV) reported in Fulton County per year, most of these near Combined Sewer Overflow streams, county residents are …

This course covers the use of mathematical and computational approaches to study infectious diseases. We will discuss models that address both the dynamics of infectious disease spread through populations and the dynamics of pathogens inside an infected individual. Students will learn how to build and analyze models for a variety of human and animal diseases. We will look at the impact of interventions on disease outcomes. Students will learn how to interpret results of modeling studies to make informed public health policy decisions.
A Hybrid Simulation And Hands-On Experimentation For Electric Machines Laboratory, Youakim Kalaani, Rami J. Haddad, Bikiran Guha
A Hybrid Simulation And Hands-On Experimentation For Electric Machines Laboratory, Youakim Kalaani, Rami J. Haddad, Bikiran Guha
Electrical & Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
In this paper, we presented a hybrid approach to integrate hands-on experimentation with virtual simulation environment in an Electric Machines course. This was achieved by using Lab-Volt’s LVSIM-EMS software as a platform for the virtual simulation environment. The use of this simulation software allowed students to freely experiment and test various circuit designs before they actually conduct any physical experimentations. This hybrid approach helped promote lab safety and also avoid damaging the equipment due to random testing. In addition, it allowed for more student-centric experiments with less hazardous lab environment. A new experiment to derive the equivalent-circuits of a transformer …

This Is Not A Fable: Using Storytelling In A College Classroom To Enhance Student Learning, Diann C. Moorman
This Is Not A Fable: Using Storytelling In A College Classroom To Enhance Student Learning, Diann C. Moorman
SoTL Commons Conference
This research endorses storytelling as means to enhance student learning in the college classroom. Indeed, many of our earliest learning experiences may have involved storytelling—from Esoph’s Fables to Grimm’s Fairy Tales. Rare is the American adult who has not heard “The Boy Who Cried Wolf” or “The Ugly Duckling”. Both are childhood stories that provided reflective life messages. As such, storytelling is an enduring form of communication. Although many educators use storytelling in their classrooms, the stories are often presented spontaneously and may not be considered integral to the day’s learning and teaching activities. In fact, in many fields, the …
Isomorphism And Similarity For 2-Generation Pedigrees, Haitao Jiang, Guohui Lin, Weitian Tong, Daming Zhu, Binhai Zhu
Isomorphism And Similarity For 2-Generation Pedigrees, Haitao Jiang, Guohui Lin, Weitian Tong, Daming Zhu, Binhai Zhu
Computing: Faculty Publications
We consider the emerging problem of comparing the similarity between (unlabeled) pedigrees. More specifically, we focus on the simplest pedigrees, namely, the 2-generation pedigrees. We show that the isomorphism testing for two 2-generation pedigrees is GI-hard. If the 2-generation pedigrees are monogamous (i.e., each individual at level-1 can mate with exactly one partner) then the isomorphism testing problem can be solved in polynomial time. We then consider the problem by relaxing it into an NP-complete decomposition problem which can be formulated as the Minimum Common Integer Pair Partition (MCIPP) problem, which we show to be FPT by exploiting a property …

"My Brain Doesn't Work Like That" Creating Success With Non-Traditional (And Traditional) Learners By Accommodating Learning, Jane Bluestein
"My Brain Doesn't Work Like That" Creating Success With Non-Traditional (And Traditional) Learners By Accommodating Learning, Jane Bluestein
National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Conference
So many of the kids we identify as “at risk” have learning preferences and needs that may not be an ideal match for the way they are being taught or how they are expected to learn. For adults whose learning styles are somewhat more traditional, it can be hard to understand kids who actually learn and perform better when their preferences look very different from our own. Trying to force kids into a picture of learning or attending that is unnatural for them can create stress for them, result in behaviors that create stress for us, and ultimately interfere with …
