Pre-Service Teachers’ Perceptions About The Effectiveness Of The Toon Comic Books In Their Guided Reading Instruction, Ewa Mcgrail, Alicja Rieger, Gina M. Doepker
Pre-Service Teachers’ Perceptions About The Effectiveness Of The Toon Comic Books In Their Guided Reading Instruction, Ewa Mcgrail, Alicja Rieger, Gina M. Doepker
Georgia Educational Researcher
Recently, education and literacy researchers have acknowledged educational merit in guided reading that incorporates interactive and authentic reading texts, such as graphic novels, which meet the needs of today’s predominantly multimodal learners (Jennings, Rule, & Zanden, 2014; Kist & Pytash, 2015). This qualitative study explores through interviews and a questionnaire the perceptions of pre-service teachers about the effectiveness of the comic book series known as TOON comics in guided reading with struggling readers and writers, from kindergarten through fifth grade. Pre-service teachers have expressed positive views concerning the use of these comic books in guided reading instruction with their struggling …

An Examination Of The Testing And Spacing Effects In A Middle Grades Social Studies Classroom, Mary C. Liming, Joshua Cuevas
Georgia Educational Researcher
This study investigates the relation between review spacing and question format on student retention. Participants in an 8th grade Georgia Studies class reviewed previously learned material either in one sitting (massed review) or in multiple sessions (spaced review). Following the review, each participant answered questions either in multiple choice or short answer format. Subsequent to answering the questions, all students received feedback. One week following the completion of the reviews, students were given a post test. One month after the post test, students were given a final test. Pre-, post- and final tests were identical and no treatment occurred between …

Coliphage As An Indicator Of The Quality Of Beach Water To Protect The Health Of Swimmers In Coastal Georgia, Javier Gallard-Gongora, Kathryn Munck, Jeff Jones, Asli Aslan
Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association
Background: Gastrointestinal disease affects millions of people in the United States and places a substantial economic burden upon healthcare systems. Recreational waters polluted with fecal material are a main source for transmission of gastrointestinal disease. Georgia beaches are monitored for the presence of fecal indicator bacteria, but these bacteria are not well associated with enteric viruses. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) has recently proposed coliphage (a virus of Escherichia coli) as an alternative indicator of fecal contamination in recreational waters. The present study compares fecal indicator bacteria and coliphage concentrations at two Georgia beaches with adjacent creeks …

An Empirical Assist To Determine Whether An Activity Is Engaged In For A Profit, William Brian Dowis, Ted D. Englebrecht, Justin S. Cox
Accountancy: Faculty Publications
Taxpayers engage in activities for both tax and nontax reasons. Some of these undertakings are geared to earn a profit. Other activities provide personal pleasure and recreation. Regardless of the activity type, expenses are incurred and can be substantial. Depending on the type of engagement, profit may or may not be achieved. Naturally, many of these pursuits are undertaken for a number of consecutive years. Because of the tax benefits these activities possess, this issue remains highly litigated and closely scrutinized by the Internal Revenue Service. This study investigates the guidance delineated by the Service and creates a model of …

Network Modeling Of Infectious Disease: Transmission, Control And Prevention, Christina M. Chandler
Network Modeling Of Infectious Disease: Transmission, Control And Prevention, Christina M. Chandler
Honors College Theses
Many factors come into play when it comes to the transmission of infectious diseases. In disease control and prevention, it is inevitable to consider the general population and the relationships between individuals as a whole, which calls for advanced mathematical modeling approaches.
We will use the concept of network flow and the modified Ford-Fulkerson algorithm to demonstrate the transmission of infectious diseases over a given period of time. Through our model one can observe what possible measures should be taken or improved upon in the case of an epidemic. We identify key nodes and edges in the resulted network, which …

Learning To Program In Python – By Teaching It!, Bryan J. Fagan M. Ed., Bryson Payne
Proceedings of the Interdisciplinary STEM Teaching & Learning Conference (Archived)
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts over 8 million job openings in IT and computing, including 1 million cybersecurity postings, over the current five-year period. This paper presents lessons learned in preparing middle-school students in rural Georgia for future careers in computer science/ IT by teaching computer programming in the free, open-source programming language Python using Turtle graphics, and discusses exercises and activities with low-cost drones, bots, and 3D printers to get students interested and keep them engaged in coding. Described herein is one pair of instructors’ (one middle-school, one university) multi-year, multi-stage approach to providing engineering and technology …
The Progesterone Receptor – To Be Or Not To Be: The Anti-Inflammatory Effects Of Progesterone In Raw 264.7 Cells, Christopher I. Brandon Jr., Bagie George
The Progesterone Receptor – To Be Or Not To Be: The Anti-Inflammatory Effects Of Progesterone In Raw 264.7 Cells, Christopher I. Brandon Jr., Bagie George
Proceedings of the Interdisciplinary STEM Teaching & Learning Conference (Archived)
It has been widely established that, in addition to its role in reproduction, progesterone (P4) also has potent anti-inflammatory effects. While the precise mechanisms have never been clearly elucidated in RAW 246.7 cells, it seems logical to assume that this response is – at least in part - a consequence of activation of and signaling through the progesterone receptor (P4-R). However, it has recently been shown that in a rat model, this anti-inflammatory effect is – in fact - independent of the progesterone receptor. In this project, the aim was to characterize this response by assaying nitric oxide production from …
