Choosing My Tradition, Travis Ryan Pickell Jan 2014

Choosing My Tradition, Travis Ryan Pickell

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

The term millennial—as in, that generation born between 1981 and 2000—does not tend to bring to mind the notion of tradition. Millennials, considered as a group, are not particularly known for rigorous adherence to particular traditions. Nor are they known for their “traditional” ways of doing things. That said, a number of commentators have noted a rising tide of interest in tradition in the spiritual lives of young people in this country. For some, this interest takes the form of a self-conscious appropriation of a single theological or historical expression of the Christian faith, as demonstrated, for example, by joining …

Pentecostal Feeling In Conversation With William James And Rudolf Otto: A Preliminary Exploration, Ekaputra Tupamahu Jan 2014

Pentecostal Feeling In Conversation With William James And Rudolf Otto: A Preliminary Exploration, Ekaputra Tupamahu

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

I met Dr. Wonsuk Ma for the first time during the orientation of incoming students at Asia Pacific Theological Seminary in the Philippines in 2003. I have come to know him since then as a leading Asian Pentecostal thinker who has a deep conviction that the task of constructing theology has to be undertaken from within a real human context. This essay is rooted in a similar conviction. I will attempt to approach Pentecostal spirituality from a standpoint of human religious experience.

“The One For The Many” Theme In James Torrance's Theology, Jeannine Graham Jan 2014

“The One For The Many” Theme In James Torrance's Theology, Jeannine Graham

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

The theme of the one for the many is a golden thread weaving its way through the heart of Torrance’s understanding of the Person and atoning work of Jesus Christ. Distinct from a Platonic connotation, it expresses the yearning and relentless determination of the Triune God to reclaim creation from its dysfunction and realize its true destiny in personal union and communion with the Triune God of grace. Anchored in the manifold richness of God’s outgoing love as Father, Son and Spirit, the God’s covenant relationship with Israel is decidedly marked by its commission to be the one for the …

The Edict Of Milan Through The Prism Of Students At The Faculty Of Orthodox Theology In Macedonia, Ruzhica Cacanoska, Maja Angelovska Jan 2014

The Edict Of Milan Through The Prism Of Students At The Faculty Of Orthodox Theology In Macedonia, Ruzhica Cacanoska, Maja Angelovska

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

This paper is an integral whole of three, seemingly different parts, each of which has the Edict of Milan as its main topic. The first part presents the historical data and key elements of the Edict of Milan which serves as an introduction into the research, which also serve as a part of the basic information that are pointed out to students. The second part of this paper points out how the anniversary of issuing the Edict of Milan--a date of utmost importance for Christianity--is being celebrated in the region. The third part contains an account of the sociological research …

Library Research Instruction For Doctor Of Ministry Students: Outcomes Of Instruction Provided By A Theological Librarian And By A Program Faculty Member, Charles D. Kamilos, Rodney Birch Jan 2014

Library Research Instruction For Doctor Of Ministry Students: Outcomes Of Instruction Provided By A Theological Librarian And By A Program Faculty Member, Charles D. Kamilos, Rodney Birch

The Christian Librarian

At some seminaries the question of who is more effective teaching library research is an open question. There are two camps of thought: (1) that the program faculty member is more effective in providing library research instruction as he or she is intimately engaged in the subject of the course(s), or 2) that the theological librarian is more effective in providing library research instruction as he or she is more familiar with the scope of resources that are available, as well as how to obtain “hard to get” resources.

Reflections On The Potential Of Gender Theory For North American Pentecostal History, Linda M. Ambrose, Leah Payne Jan 2014

Reflections On The Potential Of Gender Theory For North American Pentecostal History, Linda M. Ambrose, Leah Payne

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

In this article we show how gender is a useful category of analysis for students of North American pentecostal history. First, we provide a working definition ofthe term gender (a term with a plethora of meanings!). Then we cite a few examples from current scholarship that demonstrate how gender as a theoretical construct illuminates certain aspects of the North American movement. Finally, we reflect on the potential benefit of using gender to recount a variety of pentecostal histories, both North American and beyond.

The Darkling Lights Of Lucifer: Annihilation, Tradition, And Hell, Ross W. Mccullough Mar 2013

The Darkling Lights Of Lucifer: Annihilation, Tradition, And Hell, Ross W. Mccullough

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Gregory of Nyssa is famous for defending both the doctrine of epektasis, the continual ascent of the blessed toward God, and, in places, the doctrine of apokatastasis, the eventual restoration to God of all creation, including the Devil. This is a curious conjunction, for while Gregory connects them more than adventitiously, the tradition of the Eastern Church has largely received the former and rejected the latter.1 The point of this essay is to follow that intuition, not to say inspiration, of the tradition: briefly to challenge Gregory's conjunction and to develop from that challenge and with certain currents in philosophy …

The Perfect Priest: An Examination Of Leviticus 21:17-23, Jared Wilson Jan 2013

The Perfect Priest: An Examination Of Leviticus 21:17-23, Jared Wilson

Seminary Masters Theses

Leviticus 21:17-23 is a text that discriminates against priests who have one of the twelve blemishes listed, approaching the text with the intent to redeem the text for modern application. An exploration in the role of priests in the ancient Near East will show how the priests were human representations of the deity and many cultures and religions had physical restrictions for the priests similar to Lev 21:17-23. Examining the language of Lev 21:17-23 will show that the restrictions were not merely symbolic but intended to stop blemished priests from approaching the altar. However, they were not statements about the …

Wahlde's "The Gospel And Letters Of John" - Book Review, Paul N. Anderson Jan 2013

Wahlde's "The Gospel And Letters Of John" - Book Review, Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

This revised dissertation (Catholic Theology Faculty, Tübingen) was written in conscious dialogue with the Vatican II documents on Jewish and Christian relations. Still, the volume has value for all scholars seeking more clearly to understand the Lukan and Pauline perspectives on the future of Israel. Schafer argues that both Paul and Luke, like most Jewish writers of their time, were deeply influenced by Deuteronomistic theology on the abiding, but conditional, nature of God’s covenant with Israel. According to Schafer, both Luke and Paul regarded the initial presence of a core group of Jewish believers within early Christianity as essential for …

Platonic And Stoic Passions In Philo Of Alexandria, Loren Kerns Jan 2013

Platonic And Stoic Passions In Philo Of Alexandria, Loren Kerns

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

Philo of Alexandria forged his theory of the soul and its passions while expositing the meaning of Torah. Though writing as a Jewish teacher and disciple of Moses, his biblical reflections display a strong orientation toward Middle-Platonic philosophy. On the topic of the soul and its passions, however, Philo also exhibits significant Stoic influence. The introduction notes Philo’s apparent incompatible use of both the complex Platonic and the monistic Stoic psychological models. After assessing the degree to which Philo understood 'passion' to be a type of Stoic impulse or opinion (chapter one), chapter two demonstrates that Philo consistently drew upon …

Blind Men And Elephants: A Multi-Method Analysis Of Periodical Literature, Garrett Trott Sep 2011

Blind Men And Elephants: A Multi-Method Analysis Of Periodical Literature, Garrett Trott

The Christian Librarian

One blind man feels a tree. Another blind man feels something sharp, like a spear; and a third, feels something like a fan. All these men feel the same thing, an elephant, but different parts of it. This article looks at journal content through three separate lenses: faculty perception, citation analysis, and journal use. Each lens perceives journal value differently. Once these pictures are assembled, the challenge begins, attempting to understand what they compose. Like the disagreements these blind men had on what they were feeling, the data produced from these three lenses does not appear to coincide. It did …

Conference Participation And Publishing (Chapter Eight Of Prepare, Succeed, Advance: A Guidebook For Getting A Ph.D. In Biblical Studies And Beyond), Nijay K. Gupta Jan 2011

Conference Participation And Publishing (Chapter Eight Of Prepare, Succeed, Advance: A Guidebook For Getting A Ph.D. In Biblical Studies And Beyond), Nijay K. Gupta

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

Two clear marks of a good scholar or doctoral student are published pieces of research (articles, essays, reviews, etc.) and active participation in academic conferences (presenter, chair, respondent, etc.). Especially for graduate students, the research experience can be very isolated and have a minimal impact without attention to such avenues of dialogue and interaction. Also, practically speaking, when the time comes for the job search, a demonstration of such activity often shows that the prospective professor is a real participant of and contributor to the field of biblical studies. We will begin by discussing how to get involved in conferences.

Contextualizing The Gospel To Muslims, Maya J. Morgan Jan 2011

Contextualizing The Gospel To Muslims, Maya J. Morgan

Seminary Masters Theses

Muslims are considered some of the least reached peoples in the world. As "Christianity" is often associated with Colonialism, the Crusades, and Western culture, traditional models of “casting the seed” have proven ineffective. Those seeking to share the goodness with Muslims must explore new contextual ways to communicate the message of Christ to the Islamic community. This thesis begins by defining and giving a brief history of contextualization. Basic methods of contextualization are explained, and issued of syncretism are addressed in chapter one.

Contextualization must be practiced when communicating the good news. Chapter two focuses on the aspects of cross-‐cultural …
