Interrogating The Experience Of Quaker Scholars In Hindy And Sikh Studies: Spiritual Journeying And Academic Engagement, Eleanor Nesbitt Feb 2015

Interrogating The Experience Of Quaker Scholars In Hindy And Sikh Studies: Spiritual Journeying And Academic Engagement, Eleanor Nesbitt

Quaker Studies

This article reports a recent investigation of the relationship between the spiritual and academic journeys of seven scholars whose fields involve the study of aspects of Sikh and/ or Hindu faith. Several frameworks for the study are suggested, including Quaker encounter with Indic religions; the changing nature of social diversity; and the insider/ outsider discussion in religious studies. Discussion of their experience highlights the participants' faith background and promptings to attend a Quaker Meeting for Worship as well as the initial impetus to their academic specialism, their guiding values and their self-identification. Multiple connections between the two 'journeys' emerge-not least …

Pentecostal Feeling In Conversation With William James And Rudolf Otto: A Preliminary Exploration, Ekaputra Tupamahu Feb 2015

Pentecostal Feeling In Conversation With William James And Rudolf Otto: A Preliminary Exploration, Ekaputra Tupamahu

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

Pentecostals have reached people from many different nationalities, races, languages, and social status. This inevitably leads to a great diversity within the movement and Allan Anderson has rightly pointed out that, “it is very difficult to find some common unifying features or distinctiveness by which they might be defined." However, it is certainly true that Pentecostalism is greatly diverse, yet it can also be argued that one of the most important characteristics of this movement is the display of emotion or feeling in both public and personal worship. Pentecostal worship is filled with emotional expressions such as crying, laughing, and …

The Aesthetics Of Friends' Meeting Houses, Roger Homan Jan 2015

The Aesthetics Of Friends' Meeting Houses, Roger Homan

Quaker Studies

In an attempt to identify a Quaker aesthetic as it applies to English meeting houses, this article draws upon the physical evidence of English Meetings past and present, upon the records of discussions preceding the design and construction of meeting houses, upon interviews with Friends at some thirty meeting houses and upon the observational and interpretative literature. The main part of the discussion is structured around the moral principles of plainness, worthiness and simplicity. A distinction is made between the effect of plainness, which has in the past been regulated, and simplicity, which is here explored as a moral attribute …

Studying Wisdom: Toward A Christian Integrative Perspective, Paul Mclaughlin, Mark R. Mcminn Jan 2015

Studying Wisdom: Toward A Christian Integrative Perspective, Paul Mclaughlin, Mark R. Mcminn

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Wisdom is both a current topic of empirical investigation and a vital part of religious thought. What is the proper relationship between the science of wisdom and religious tradition? We suggest four possible approaches: remove the study of wisdom from its religious moorings, disregard the science of wisdom, look for commonalities in wisdom traditions, and look for particular contributions with religious faiths. Whereas the first two approaches introduce a number of problems for those committed to the integration of faith and psychology, the latter two approaches create a number of intriguing possibilities. Three potential areas of wisdom investigation are offered …

Worship, Veneration, And Idolatry: Observations From C.S. Lewis, Jason Lepojärvi Jan 2015

Worship, Veneration, And Idolatry: Observations From C.S. Lewis, Jason Lepojärvi

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

What does it mean to love God 'more' than people? This article engages the difficulty of defining worship, veneration, and idolatry, by looking at C. S. Lewis's observations on the subject. Lewis offers helpful nudges towards more than a merely conceptual distinction, but he does not consistently apply his love principles to cover human love for the saints (Mary in particular). The article concludes with eight follow-up questions that benefit philosophers and theologians alike as they seek to formulate more focused definitions of worship, veneration, and idolatry.

Roots And Fruits: Materials Relating To The Quaker Peace Testimony In The Commonweal Collection, Christina Arber

Quaker Studies

This article includes a select review of books, pamphlets, journals and archives in the Commonweal Collection relating to the Quaker Peace Testimony. It provides an introduction to and background information about the Collection, an independent library which focuses on non-violence and movements for social change. The materials reviewed relate to the Peace Testimony's beginnings, development and interpretation; to Conscientious Objection in two world wars including the Friends Ambulance Unit; and to the witness of individual Friends. Many books and pamphlets reviewed illustrate the transition to a broader understanding of the peace testimony encompassing nonviolent action, mediation, and postwar peace campaigns.

Friend In The Field: A Reflexive Approach To Being A Quaker Ethnographer, Eleanor Nesbitt Nov 2014

Friend In The Field: A Reflexive Approach To Being A Quaker Ethnographer, Eleanor Nesbitt

Quaker Studies

Acknowledgement of the significance of reflexivity in social research has generated numerous autobiographical references in introductions to reports of field studies of faith communities. In particular the relevance of the researcher's gender- or at least female gender - has been a subject for scholarly reflection. Moreover, the insider/outsider dichotomy has been invoked and contested, and the changing relationship between the ethnographer and the field during field work has been charted. In this article it is some ethnographers' religious context and orientation that is the focus. With particular reference to some contemporary British Quakers whose field work has had a religious …

Religious Silence: British Quakerism And British Buddhism Compared, Sandra Bell, Peter Collins Nov 2014

Religious Silence: British Quakerism And British Buddhism Compared, Sandra Bell, Peter Collins

Quaker Studies

In this paper we explore the communicative function of silence among British Quakers and British Theraviida Buddhists. Both examples link silence to stillness with the implication that non-activity is a means of evoking sacred presence. It is proposed that such an evocation is achieved through attaching aesthetic and ethical value to the performance of stillness and silence. Furthermore, we suggest that the identity of each of these religious communities is, in many respects, defined through the emphasis that is placed on the existential and moral significance of silence.

An Evaluation Of The Doctrine Of The Inward Light As A Basis For Mission - As Exemplified By Quaker Approaches To Jews And Muslims In The Seventeenth Century, Kathleen Thomas Nov 2014

An Evaluation Of The Doctrine Of The Inward Light As A Basis For Mission - As Exemplified By Quaker Approaches To Jews And Muslims In The Seventeenth Century, Kathleen Thomas

Quaker Studies

The concept of the Inward Light, variously understood, was the basis for Quaker missionary activity m the seventeenth century. Quakers made attempts to convert Jews and Muslims, both by going out to meet them and by writing tracts and epistles. Considerable use was made of the Hebrew Scriptures and of the Qur'an. The conversionist approach proved unsuccessful, and this led to a change in the Quaker understanding of mission.

Money Matters - The Experience Of English Friends In Stavanger, 1885-1900, David Adshead Nov 2014

Money Matters - The Experience Of English Friends In Stavanger, 1885-1900, David Adshead

Quaker Studies

The economic depression in Norway in the mid- 1880s led to the virtual bankruptcy of two of the key members of the Stavanger Meeting at a time when there was also a crisis of leadership following the death of Endre Dahl for so long the leader of the Quaker group there. A small group of English Friends led by Walter Morris (later, Morice) made an appeal for funds so as to be able to make commercial loans and thus ease the situation for Carl Nyman and Peter Fugilie who had by now made arrangements with their creditors. But just as …

Moral Issues In The Recent History Of The Bulgarian Orthodox Church, Ivelina Nikolova Nov 2014

Moral Issues In The Recent History Of The Bulgarian Orthodox Church, Ivelina Nikolova

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

Over the past centuries Bulgarian people experienced severe religious and ethnic threats due to which they have developed defense mechanisms and a strong sense of sympathy for persecuted ethnic and social groups. In recent history, this reflex was manifested most clearly in the behavior of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church in defense of the Bulgarian Jews. At the same time two other events, however, reveal its controversial image that caused it a severe damage. In recent years, many Bulgarians are seeking the moral dimensions of these phenomena that influence the spirituality and morality of the younger generations.

The Art Of Joseph Edward Southall, Roger Homan Oct 2014

The Art Of Joseph Edward Southall, Roger Homan

Quaker Studies

Joseph Southall (1861-1944) was an artist distinguished in his field, a political activist of considerable stamina and a Quaker greatly loved and honoured by some Friends, albeit not by all. His political involvement as chairman of the Independent Labour Party in Birmingham from 1914 to 1931 afforded an opportunity for witness that was in harmony with his religious affiliation. But his profession as an artist was pursued against a climate of ambivalence toward the arts within the Quaker community, which was diminishing in the early twentieth century but had not altogether disappeared. This paper illustrates the traditional disapprobation of the …

John Brewin's Tracts: The Written Word, Evangelicalism, And The Quaker Way In Mid Nineteenth Century England, Edwina Newman Oct 2014

John Brewin's Tracts: The Written Word, Evangelicalism, And The Quaker Way In Mid Nineteenth Century England, Edwina Newman

Quaker Studies

This study explores seven volumes of tracts collected between 1827 and 1850 by John Brewin, a Cirencester Quaker. This period was a critical one for the Religious Society of Friends, notably in its relationship with Evangelicalism. The collection allows us to test something of the nature and extent of change at grassroots level, by providing an insight into the range of issues that were of interest to provincial English Quakers, the means by which ideas were disseminated, and how they might have been received by readers. The conclusion is that, while Evangelical influence was clearly growing, Quakers remained deeply attached …

Religiosity, Marital Adjustment, And Intimacy, Bryan L. Presler Jun 2014

Religiosity, Marital Adjustment, And Intimacy, Bryan L. Presler

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

The purpose of this study was to examine the complexities of how religious attendance, personal religious activity, and importance of religion are related to marital adjustment and emotional, sexual, and spiritual intimacy. Previous research suggests that church attendance is related to higher marital adjustment; however, the relationship between sexual satisfaction and religiosity appears to be minimal, although Christian authors often suggest a link. The Revised Dyadic Adjustment Scale (RDAS), and the Emotional, Sexual, and Spiritual Intimacy Scale (ESSI) were administered to a sample of 88 married individuals. One-way ANOVAs found that religious attendance was not related to marital adjustment, or …

From Genocide To Dialogue Christian-Muslim Relations In The Former Yugoslavia, Paul Mojzes Apr 2014

From Genocide To Dialogue Christian-Muslim Relations In The Former Yugoslavia, Paul Mojzes

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

Extremely complex historical circumstances and modern political manipulations have caused in the Balkans three major waves of genocides during the twentieth century. The conflicts were so varied and widespread that it will not be possible to provide an adequate overview in this paper. The first one took place during the I and II Balkan Wars in 1912-1913, in which genocides occurred in the effort of four allied countries (Bulgaria, Greece, Montenegro, and Serbia) to liberate themselves from the Ottoman Empire. Then the second war broke out leading to genocidal ethnic cleansing as the embattled nations of the Balkans attempted to …

Trinitarian Theorizing And Mystery As A Way Forward: A Critical Examination Of The Forms Of Trinitarian Hypothesizing, Why They Fail, And Why Mystery Is A Way Forward, Matthew J. Conniry Mar 2014

Trinitarian Theorizing And Mystery As A Way Forward: A Critical Examination Of The Forms Of Trinitarian Hypothesizing, Why They Fail, And Why Mystery Is A Way Forward, Matthew J. Conniry

Seminary Masters Theses

Scholarship reveals that there are at least two primary ways of handling the issue incumbent within Trinitarian theorizing. Most theologians resolve the issue by addressing the inconsistencies, finding various ways to make important distinctions to eliminate apparent contradictions. This is no doubt the most popular route. Among these are social Trinitarians and Latin Trinitarians. A rough distinction can be made here, wherein social Trinitarians start with the Threeness of God and reason from that stance that God is one by an inexorable and eternal loving relationship. Oppositely, Latin Trinitarians start with God as one and reason how God can possibly …
