Four Gardner-Webb University students will compete at the Ethics Bowl hosted by North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (NCICU). Teams from 24 private colleges and universities will participate in the event, which will be held Feb. 16 and 17 at the Legislative Complex in Raleigh, N.C. The GWU team includes senior Harley Burgess of Forest City, N.C., as well as freshmen Destiny Neesmith of Kings Mountain, N.C., Carlee Winstead of Jacksonville, N.C., and Darby Yates of Hickory, N.C.

Rev. Wesley Smith thought he was following God’s will for his life in 2001 when he received his bachelor’s in criminal justice from Gardner-Webb University. However, he became discouraged when he didn’t find a job in juvenile probation and parole and wasn’t sure what to do. Direction came during a church revival service.

Theater critics in Washington, D.C., are taking notice of Amber McGinnis, 2004 alumna of Gardner-Webb University. Recent articles in the Washington Post and Broadway World describe McGinnis as “rising through the directing ranks in DC Theater.” The Bessemer City, N.C., native came to GWU to major in religious studies with a missions focus, but adjusted her plans after discovering her interest in theater arts.

Gardner-Webb University inducted more than 20 new members into the Gamma Beta Upsilon Chapter of the Alpha Sigma Lambda honor society on Nov. 12. In a ceremony in GWU’s Tucker Student Center, 22 students and two honorary inductees joined the society as representatives of the University’s Degree Completion Program (DCP). Joining Alpha Sigma Lambda as honorary members were Dr. Sophia Steibel, vice chair of DCP Council and professor of Christian education and Jay Zimmer, chair of DCP Council and instructor of biology.

Gardner-Webb University’s human-trafficking awareness club, Release the Captives, will hold its second annual 5K “Rescue Race” at 9 a.m. on Sept. 16 on Gardner-Webb’s main campus. The proceeds of this race will help rescue enslaved children in Ghana through the Challenging Heights organization. Registration is $15 for GWU students and $20 for community members and can be completed online at www.rescueracegwu.com, or on the morning of the race beginning at 8:15 a.m.

Since she left Gardner-Webb University in 2003 with a bachelor’s degree in religious education, Jill Mayo Forbes of Hanahan, S.C., has worked in a variety of ministries and jobs from retail sales and wedding planning to student ministry, missions and teaching children and adults. Her studies prepared her for each of those roles, as well as her most important job of being a mother. “I use what I gained in the classroom every day as a mom. Every day,” she emphasized.

Called into ministry at 16, Megan G. Brown of Fridley, Minn., came to Gardner-Webb University with clear goals in mind. She would be the first in her family to earn a bachelor’s degree and then serve in youth ministry. Her plans started to unravel as she approached graduation in 2005.

The most beneficial course Andrea Thomas ’14 took at Gardner-Webb University was Honors Research and Thesis. Her project examined how sacred stories from Islam, Judaism and Christianity could be beneficial to the coping process for rape survivors of each respective tradition. “I loved being able to immerse myself in my project and create a paper from my own ideas,” she reflected.

Courtney Finocchiaro Stamey ’12 of Greensboro, N.C., is a bi-vocational pastoral resident who ministers in traditional, as well as unique settings. She divides her time between serving members of her congregation and working on a farm alongside of people with special needs. “My position has me with my feet in two places,” offered Stamey, an alumna of Gardner-Webb University.

When she examines a patient to determine a diagnosis, Natalie Pippin Britt ’08 relies on the critical thinking skills she developed as an undergraduate at Gardner-Webb University. The first-year resident in family medicine at Memorial Hospital in Savannah, Ga., began her educational journey as a religious studies major. She had considered vocational ministry, but soon realized her calling was outside the church.

Gardner-Webb University’s Life of the Scholar (LOTS) program invites the public to “Lethal Religion: The Explosive Mix of Politics and Religion in Judaism, Christianity and Islam,” a lecture by Dr. Charles Kimball on Tuesday, Sept. 20. His lecture at Gardner-Webb will begin at 6:30 p.m. in Blanton Auditorium inside Hamrick Hall on the GWU campus. Gardner-Webb University’s Degree Completion Program (DCP) acknowledged the efforts of several longtime instructors during the recent DCP Faculty Day Awards Program, held annually in August. Ten individuals were honored for both the quality and longevity of their service to Gardner-Webb, and the University commends them for their commitment to excellence in higher education programs. The Beyond the Call of Duty award is among the DCP’s highest honors and is given to an individual whose service and commitment to the goals of the program extend beyond one’s typical assignment.

Focusing on world religions gives her an understanding of different cultures and beliefs, while participating in theatre helps her become an effective communicator, developing skills in presentation and professionalism. Two weeks after graduating from the School of Divinity at Gardner-Webb University, Chase Robinson (’16) accepted the call to pastor Sandy Plains Baptist Church in Shelby, N.C. He transitioned to the role after serving as the church’s youth and children’s minister for three years. “I love being with people and building meaningful relationships,” reflected Robinson, who earned a Master of Divinity in Pastoral Studies. “My job gives me great opportunities to do so.”

Chase Robinson (’16) of Vale, N.C., came to Gardner-Webb University thinking he was on his way to the foreign mission field. As he began serving in student ministries and working in local churches, he discovered God’s calling was closer to home, and he wouldn’t be alone. His future included Mindy McNeely (’16), a young woman he met through Fellowship of Christians United in Service (FOCUS), a student ministry involving teams of students who lead youth retreats locally and regionally.
