As a mental health counselor, Andrew M. Woods (’14) is prepared for the unpredictable, because each person’s situation is unique and different. While he may not know what each day brings, he is confident in the education he received through the School of Psychology and Counseling at Gardner-Webb University. “In counseling and ministry you can encounter more struggles through the people you work with than can be imagined, not to mention the personal struggles in your own life,” observed Woods, owner of Woods Family Counseling and Healing Care in Black Mountain, N.C.

Kathryn “Katie Grace” Kibler (’11) of Winston-Salem, N.C., was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis six months before she was to enter Gardner-Webb University as a freshman. While she didn’t understand all the ways her life was about to change, her admissions counselor worked to get her registered with the Noel Program for students with disabilities, so she could receive necessary accommodations without delay. “At this point there was no doubt that Gardner-Webb was where the Lord had purposed me to be,” affirmed Kibler, who received a degree in studio art.

For the fifth consecutive year, a team of students from Gardner-Webb University participated in the North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (NCICU) Ethics Bowl. The event was held Feb. 5-6 on the Meredith College campus near Raleigh, N.C., and featured 22 colleges and universities from around the state with the theme “Ethics in Technology.” Dr. Kent Blevins, professor of religious studies, serves as coordinator for the Gardner-Webb team.

Gardner-Webb University provided theatre alumnus Nathan Rouse (’02) with a solid Christian education that has impacted both his work for the stage and his life. It was the University’s Christian foundation, as well as the beauty of its campus and surrounding countryside, that first attracted Rouse to Gardner-Webb from his native Georgia. He credits GWU’s role in his spiritual growth, while he majored in theatre and minored in religious studies, as a significant influence on both his career and his relationships with others.

As sports director of the Lake Norman (N.C.) YMCA, Alex Ellwood (’12) combines his degree in psychology from Gardner-Webb University with his love of sports. Gardner-Webb University is now accepting applications for admission to its new Accelerated Pastoral Ministries Program (APMP), which will provide students called to serve as pastors with both a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in five years of study. The APMP has received full approval by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), and the program’s Master of Divinity has been approved by the Commission on Accrediting of the Association of Theological Schools (ATS). Students may apply now for admission to the APMP for Fall 2016.

Mary Hellstrom came to Gardner-Webb University as a nursing major, but left with a bachelor’s degree in biblical studies. She switched majors her freshman year, and during the next four years at the University, she experienced both academic and personal growth. “It is one of the best choices I have ever made, hands down, following the decision to attend GWU in the first place,” she stated.

Jason Bruner (’05) was near the end of his career at Gardner-Webb University when his future became clear. Influenced by several professors in the Department of Religious Studies and Philosophy, he vividly remembers the moment teaching became a possibility. “I took several classes from the late Dr. Dan Goodman in the School of Divinity. It was in his classes that I first thought, ‘If I ever become a professor, I’d want to do it half as well as he does it,’” Bruner shared.

As a religious studies and philosophy major at Gardner-Webb, Scott Ryan received the Greek Award and the Christian Service Award. After graduation, he was accepted to Duke University Divinity School, where he received Master of Divinity and Master of Theology degrees and was honored with the Excellence in Bible Award for his graduating class. Ryan is currently a candidate for the Ph.D. in New Testament at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, with an anticipated graduation date of 2016, writing his dissertation on the Apostle Paul’s adaptations of divine conflict themes in the letter to the Romans.

Gardner-Webb University inducted more than 30 new members into the Gamma Beta Upsilon Chapter of the Alpha Sigma Lambda honor society for adult students on Nov. 15. During his sophomore year, Jacob Kirby (’16) felt a calling to switch his major from music education to discipleship studies. Gardner-Webb University and Isothermal Community College (Spindale, N.C.) announced a partnership that will further ease the transfer process for students who complete degrees in certain programs with coursework at both institutions. Officials for both schools signed agreements to create a seamless degree track for accounting, business administration, entrepreneurship, healthcare management, criminal justice, human services, elementary education, nursing and religious studies students who begin their studies at Isothermal (ICC) and finish them in the University’s Degree Completion Program (DCP). The latest Life Of The Scholar (LOTS) event at Gardner-Webb University will give the audience an inside look at theology and biblical interpretation in American history. GWU alum Dr. James P. Byrd, an associate professor of American Religious History at Vanderbilt University (Nashville, Tenn.), will speak on topics referenced in his latest book, “Sacred Scripture, Sacred War: The Bible and the American Revolution.” The lecture will be held Thursday, Oct. 23 at 6:30 p.m. in Hope Hall, located within the Tucker Student Center.
