Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Background: Higher-quality plant-based diets (PBDs) are associated with lower risks of mortality and chronic disease, but whether ultra-processed food (UPF) content affects these associations remains unclear. We examined whether UPF content influences the relationship between plant-based dietary patterns and risks of mortality and major chronic diseases, accounting for nutrient quality. Methods: This prospective cohort study included 124,836 UK Biobank participants aged 40–70 years (recruited 2006–2010). Dietary intake was assessed using the Oxford WebQ 24-h recall. Four modified Plant-Based Diet Indices (PDIs) were derived to distinguish healthy (hPDI) and unhealthy (uPDI) patterns with high- and low-UPF content, using the Nova classification …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Introduction Nitrate and nitrite, present in ground and drinking water, as well as foods, may contribute to bladder cancer through the formation of carcinogenic N -nitrosamines. However, risk likely depends on both the source and endogenous nitrosating factors. Methods Among participants of the Danish Diet, Cancer, and Health Cohort (N = 54,610) with no history of cancer, source-specific nitrate and nitrite intakes (drinking water, plant sources, naturally occurring animal sources, and additive-permitted meat sources) were estimated from national water monitoring data and food frequency questionnaires using food databases. Bladder cancer cases were ascertained through the Danish Cancer Registry. Multivariable-adjusted Cox …

An Open-Source Evaluation Framework For Risc-V Co-Design-Based Decimal Arithmetic, Riaz Ul Haque Mian, Michiko Inoue

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Hardware–software co-design is a balanced strategy for computationally intensive algorithms such as decimal computing. It can provide several Pareto points for the development of embedded systems in terms of hardware cost and performance. In this study, we propose an efficient and accurate evaluation framework for decimal computing. The framework was designed and developed for hardware–software co-design decimal arithmetic using the RISC-V ecosystem. New binary and decimal-oriented instructions supported by an accelerator were developed. The framework can perform cycle-accurate analysis for performance and assess hardware overhead for co-design-based decimal arithmetic. Unlike previous studies that focused primarily on implementing and evaluating individual …

Constitutive Behaviour, Failure Mechanisms, And Life Cycle Assessment Of Internally Cured Fiber-Reinforced High-Strength Concrete, Kastro Kiran V, Dhanya Sathyan, Sanjay Kumar Shukla Aug 2026

Constitutive Behaviour, Failure Mechanisms, And Life Cycle Assessment Of Internally Cured Fiber-Reinforced High-Strength Concrete, Kastro Kiran V, Dhanya Sathyan, Sanjay Kumar Shukla

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

High-strength concrete (HSC) with low water-to-cement ratios undergoes self-desiccation, resulting in incomplete hydration, capillary porosity, and autogenous shrinkage that can compromise long-term performance. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) functions as an internal curing agent by releasing stored water as internal relative humidity decreases, thereby sustaining hydration within the cement matrix. However, the combined influence of PEG grade, dosage, and fibre type on the constitutive response, fracture behaviour, and environmental performance of M65 HSC remains insufficiently understood. This study investigated twelve concrete mixes incorporating three curing regimes viz. Conventional curing, spray curing, and PEG-based internal curing (IC) using PEG 4000 (1.5%) and PEG …

Ephemeral To Empowered? International Comparison Of Women’S Participation In Web Series Production, 2012–2019, Nicola Evans, Marion Mccutcheon, Emilia King, Joel Bassaget, Steinar Ellingsen

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Women are significantly underrepresented in above-the-line roles in film and television, but anecdotal evidence suggests they are gravitating to web series. To explore this, the authors built the largest known international archive of web series released during 2012–2019 and analysed women’s participation. In the top five web series producing countries in the West, women achieved or approached parity with men in producing, directing and writing, but not cinematography. Do achievements in low-budget, transitory media count for anything? Drawing on ephemeral media scholarship, we discuss the potential of such forms to disturb entrenched patterns of gender discrimination in screen industries worldwide.

Exploring Traditional Breast Cancer Risk Genes Among Aboriginal And Torres Strait Islander Women, Katie Meehan, Leanne Pilkington, Azim Khan, Nicholas Pachter, Lisa Spalding, Ayeisha Milligan Armstrong, Cameron Redfern, Andrew Redfern

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Background: Germline pathogenic variants in BRCA1/2 increase breast and ovarian cancer risk, but their prevalence in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (herein referred to as Aboriginal) families has never been studied. Consequently, their contribution to breast cancer in this population is unknown.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study included 259 Aboriginal women and 789 age- and remoteness-matched non-Aboriginal women diagnosed with breast cancer (2001–2016). We assessed family history, genetic service referral and testing rates, and pathogenic variant rates in the context of testing access.

Results: Family history data were available for more Aboriginal than non-Aboriginal cases (46% vs. 34%, p < 0.001), with no difference in reported first-degree relatives with breast (22.5% vs. 22.4%, p = 0.98) or ovarian cancer (4.2% vs. 2.2%, p = 0.29). Similar proportions were referred to genetic services for testing eligibility (5.4% vs. 7.2%, p = 0.392). Of those referred, similar proportions were offered testing (86% vs. 81%, p = 0.66). Across the full cohort, BRCA1/2 pathogenic variants were detected in 0.77% of Aboriginal versus 2.4% of non-Aboriginal women (p = 0.127); any pathogenic gene variant was detected in 0.77% versus 3.0% (p = 0.039).

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Conservation translocations require careful assessment of dietary resources to ensure population viability. Here, we used environmental DNA metabarcoding to characterise fungal assemblages across three major habitat types on Dirk Hartog Island, Western Australia, prior to the planned reintroduction of two threatened mycophagous species: the boodie (Bettongia lesueur) and woylie (Bettongia ogilbyi). We detected 243 fungal ASVs, of which 75 represented taxa that are likely to produce macroscopic fruiting bodies accessible to mycophagous mammals. Ectomycorrhizal fungi dominated all habitats, with Pezizaceae being the most abundant family—a pattern consistent with known dietary preferences of both species across multiple Australian locations. Fungal community …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Gastric cancer remains a major global health burden, ranking fifth worldwide in both incidence and mortality. While Helicobacter pylori is a well-established Group I carcinogen, increasing evidence suggests that non-H. pylori bacteria, including Streptococcus anginosus, may also contribute to gastric carcinogenesis. However, their comparative pathogenic roles and interactions remain poorly defined. In this study, public databases showed stage-dependent abundance changes of H. pylori and S. anginosus but no significant correlation during gastric cancer progression. We further quantified both bacteria in gastric fluid samples collected from 500 individuals using a non-invasive gastric string test and in fecal samples from an independent …

Transformative Phygital Service Research (Tpsr): An Agenda For Future Research, Saadia Shabnam, Sanjit K. Roy, Yonathan Silvain Roten, Gaganpreet Singh, Taewon Suh, Hairong Li

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Purpose – This paper aims to develop a transformative phygital service research (TPSR) framework to explain how hybrid physical-digital service systems shape consumer well-being, autonomy, dignity and inclusion. While prior phygital service research (PSR) advances understanding of hybrid experiences and human-centred ecosystems, key ambiguities persist around agency, governance and interpretive labour in algorithmically mediated interactions. Existing frameworks address value co-creation but lack clarity on how digitally enforced rules and redistributed labour drive transformation. TPSR addresses this gap by theorising contradiction-driven processes through which human–AI arrangements and socio-technical dynamics produce both empowering and erosive outcomes in phygital service environments. Design/methodology/approach – …

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

In this paper I discuss the perceived tensions in navigating an Explicit Instruction approach with a Culturally Responsive Pedagogy at the cultural interface. The study took place in a Year 6/7 classroom in the Torres Strait, Queensland, Australia. All students identified as EAL/D learners. As an experienced, yet non-Indigenous practitioner, I documented the perceived tensions I encountered in the discipline of English. Adopting an Action Research methodology, I explored the classroom struggles as I navigated the mandate of teaching explicitly, yet responsively. I used student dialogue sessions and a reflective journal to document my tensions. Results showed, despite being able …

Introduction: Blood biomarkers like phosphorylated tau (p-tau)217 offer high diagnostic accuracy for Alzheimer's disease (AD) but face implementation challenges in low-prevalence settings. We evaluated the Altoida NeuroMarker Platform as a digital cognitive triage tool before plasma p-tau217 testing.

Methods: XGBoost models were trained to predict mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and p-tau217 status in 688 individuals across Australia, Spain, and the United States using the Altoida NeuroMarker. p-tau217 status was dichotomized using a threshold of 0.04 pg/mL (LucentAD). We modeled a two-step workflow (Altoida, plasma p-tau217) to enrich downstream biomarker testing, assuming 30% prevalence of AD pathology.

Results: The Altoida NeuroMarker …

The number of children engaged in homeschool education is increasing, particularly in regional areas of Australia. Homeschool families currently access community-based activities such as theatre productions and sports programs, as well as public library services, to enrich their children’s learning. However, access to quality programs that support digital literacy skills remains limited and the benefits of these programs to home schoolers remain largely unexplored. This study examined the experiences of homeschool families with children aged 6–12 who participated in a series of stop-motion animation workshops held in a regional Western Australian public library. Data were collected from both participating parents …

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are synthetic chemicals that are highly resistant to biodegradation. Due to their bioaccumulation, long-term persistence, and adverse human health effects, they have been classified as organic pollutants. The leaching of PFAS into water sources has resulted in their detection in global drinking water supplies. To mitigate adverse health effects and minimise environmental damage, regulations regarding maximum allowable PFAS concentrations in water have been imposed. Traditional PFAS in water quantification methods, such as liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS), gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS), and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), have intrinsic limitations that pose challenges in such PFAS analysis. …
