An Economic Valuation Of The Jandakot Wetlands, Paul Gerrans
An Economic Valuation Of The Jandakot Wetlands, Paul Gerrans
Research outputs pre 2011
Economists implore the efficient allocation of resources. Paradoxically, where the issue of efficiency has become critically important in recent times, namely the allocation of the environment and its resources and amenity, the techniques of economists have been found wanting and less than fully developed. This paper seeks to address this apparent paradox and deficiency.
This paper provides an economic valuation of the Jandakot wetlands, located to the south of Perth. A referendum style contingent valuation method survey is used to estimate economic value attributable to the preservation of wetlands dependant on the groundwater resource. Event history analysis is explored and …
An Analysis Of Service Quality In Ansett Australia W.A. Division, Jodie R. Buckley
An Analysis Of Service Quality In Ansett Australia W.A. Division, Jodie R. Buckley
Theses : Honours
There is a lack of significant in-depth research, analysing service quality in the travel and tourism industry. This research attempts to contribute to the literature by analysing service quality using Ansett Australia (W.A. Division) as a case study. The approach uses the revised 1990 SERVQUAL instrument, originally developed by Parasuraman, Zeithaml and Berry (1986) and the conceptual model of service quality. The SERVQUAL instrument and conceptual framework form the basis of the theoretical framework and analysis. Three perspectives are considered in the analysis of service quality in Ansett Australia (W.A. Division), namely, front-line employees, management and frequent flyers. Through the …
The Self Reported Patterns Of Alcohol Consumption By Registered Nurses In Western Australia, K. Waters
The Self Reported Patterns Of Alcohol Consumption By Registered Nurses In Western Australia, K. Waters
Theses : Honours
The study of self reported patterns of alcohol consumption by Registered nurses in Western Australia is the first Australian study that attempts to quantify the amount of alcohol consumed by nurses. This study also examines the type of alcohol related problem that nurses most frequently experience, and investigates the relationships between problematic alcohol consumption and the demographic categories of age, gender, area of nursing practice and geographical location of residence. The conceptual framework that guides the study incorporates a model developed by Thorley, and considers factors related to the intrinsic properties of alcohol, the environment and the individual which contribute …
Do Women Retire? : A Feminist Critique Of The Social Construction Of Retirement, Pamela Weatherill
Do Women Retire? : A Feminist Critique Of The Social Construction Of Retirement, Pamela Weatherill
Theses : Honours
This research comes as a response to the paucity of discussion on women's experience of retirement. In consideration of the relationship between work and retirement, this study examines what a feminist perspective on women's experience of work can contribute to the androcentric conception of retirement. Women's experience of work is shaped by many forces, most particularly by the ideology of motherhood and the sexual division of labour. Together, these factors have ensured that women and men experience both paid and unpaid work in quantitatively and qualitatively different manners. While the construction of retirement has been around the largely male experience …
The Effect Of Facilitating Increased Involvement In Nursing Home Caregiving On Former Caregivers' Satisfaction With The Care Arrangement, Christine Toye
The Effect Of Facilitating Increased Involvement In Nursing Home Caregiving On Former Caregivers' Satisfaction With The Care Arrangement, Christine Toye
Theses : Honours
This study examined the effect of a programme that facilitated fanner caregivers' increased involvement with nursing home care giving on their satisfaction with the care provided for their relatives. It was guided by Ray's Adaptation Model of Nursing (Ray, 1984, 1989). The hypotheses stated that the programme would help former caregivers to adapt to the institutionalisation of their loved ones, as manifested by their increased satisfaction with aspects of the care arrangement (overall care, nursing care, relationships, and the environment). The convenience sample consisted of 31 former care givers of long term residents admitted to a metropolitan nursing home 1 …

The Identification Of Conceptual And Strategic Difficulties Encountered By Students When Using An Electronic Spreadsheet, Craig Clapham
The Identification Of Conceptual And Strategic Difficulties Encountered By Students When Using An Electronic Spreadsheet, Craig Clapham
Theses : Honours
The call for the use of computer technology in mathematics education has been heeded by the Ministry of Education in Western Australia. The syllabus documents for the Upper Secondary mathematics courses recommend the use of computer software packages for the teaching of the concepts involved in these courses. In particular, the electronic spreadsheet is suggested as a versatile and useful tool for simulations and problem-solving by students, although very little formal study has been undertaken to support or refute such beliefs. This study involved teaching a group of four Year 12 students to operate a spreadsheet, and then examined the …
Determining The Validity And Reliability Of An Instrument Designed To Measure Metacognitive Behaviours, Anne L. Martin
Determining The Validity And Reliability Of An Instrument Designed To Measure Metacognitive Behaviours, Anne L. Martin
Theses : Honours
This project was designed to study the role of metacognition in mathematical problem solving. More specifically, it was designed to determine the validity and reliability of an instrument proposed to identify metacognitive behaviours in Year 7 children solving problems. The instrument was used to analyse audio tapes of pairs of students working on a non-routine problem (i.e., a problem that cannot be solved solely by the direct application of the basic operations). Analysis of the audio tapes involved categorizing metacognitive decisions as: orientation, organization, execution, and verification behaviours. A "cognitive-metacognitive" framework (Garofalo & Lester, 1985) was used as a basis …
Influences On Outdoor Education Teachers' Content Selection, S. D. Thorpe
Influences On Outdoor Education Teachers' Content Selection, S. D. Thorpe
Theses : Honours
This study sought to identify what teachers perceive to be the major factors influencing their selection of content in outdoor education formal curricula in two Western Australian government senior high schools. The study uses comparative and descriptive measures, including a documentary analysis comparing Ministry of Education and school formal curricula. This analysis initially identified discrepancies with content selection, prompting the investigation, through interviewing, of teachers' perceptions of their causes. From the perceptions investigated, five categories of factors were identified: Time, cost; expertise; needs; and resources. These categories were integrated to form a substantive theory for influences on content selection by …
The Marginalisation Of Women: Factors Affecting The Discontinuance Of The Careers Of Female Police Officers, Vicki Wilkinson
The Marginalisation Of Women: Factors Affecting The Discontinuance Of The Careers Of Female Police Officers, Vicki Wilkinson
Theses : Honours
Women have participated in policing in Western Australia for seventy five years. The first two women were employed as “Police Matrons” in roles which were restricted to what were thought to be the “feminine” tasks of dealing with female offenders, families and wayward youth, and providing clerical support to male officers. By 1941 there was a total of 3 women police in Western Australia and by 1960 their numbers had grown to twelve, however their role had changed little since 1917 and they were still seen as having limited function. By 1975 pressure had grown, not only within the police …
The Development And Use In A Study Of An Instrument To Measure Teacher's Perceptions Of Their Effectiveness In Teaching Catholic Moral Principles To Middle And Upper Secondary Students, Peter Cassidy
Theses : Honours
The purpose of this study was to design an instrument and to use it in a study to measure teachers' perceptions of their effectiveness in teaching Catholic moral principles to middle and upper secondary students. As well, a final version of the instrument based on the results of the study and respondent feedback was to be developed. The study was justified on the following grounds: - less than half of Western Australia's Catholic secondary teachers of Religious Education are qualified to teach Religious Education. - Research findings (Fahy, 1980; Flynn, 1985; Angus, 1988) cast doubt on the effectiveness of moral …
Issues That Concern Prison Officers About Hiv Positive Prisoners In Western Australia, David Francis Cain
Issues That Concern Prison Officers About Hiv Positive Prisoners In Western Australia, David Francis Cain
Theses : Honours
In 1988 the Department of Corrective Services established an AIDS Standing Committee to draw up an HIV positive/AIDS policy. The Committee consists of ten members, two of whom are union members who represent the issues that concern 1,227 prison officers statewide. The Policy which was issued in 1989 medically isolated HIV positive prisoners from the mainstream prison population. The aim of this research is to identify and quantify the issues that concern prison officers about HIV positive prisoners in Western Australia. Such information will act as a medium through which these will be communicated to the AIDS Standing Committee. Structured …
Human Services: Australian Explorations, David Wiles
Human Services: Australian Explorations, David Wiles
Research outputs pre 2011
Human services is an emergent field of study and work in Australia. Its definition is difficult, needing ongoing theoretical and empirical clarification. Despite the contemporary decline of the Australian welfare state; human services has emerged in cultural congruence with historic Australian notions of a 'fair go', of social equity, and of social egalitarianism. Human services constitutes a nascent profession, which - in the main - helps people with problems including mostly members of the social 'underclass'. Human services draws upon a variety of models, but the generic 'problem-solving' methodology applies across all of its fields of service. Thus human service …

A Study Of Participants' Experience Of Yirra : An Adolescent Treatment Program, Bethany F. Byatt
A Study Of Participants' Experience Of Yirra : An Adolescent Treatment Program, Bethany F. Byatt
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Yirra is a residential treatment program for young people who are experiencing problems associated with their substance use. The design of this program was influenced both by consultation with other youth services, and by current literature and theories regarding the most effective approaches to delivery of youth substance use services. Yirra has been in operation since February, 1992, and to date has not been formally evaluated. This research represents the first stage of evaluation of Yirra. The Phenomenological approach to enquiry was aimed at gaining some understanding of the experience of being at Yirra, from the perspective of the young …
The Changing Role And Portrayal Of 'The Individual' In Historical Context In Jane Austen's Pride And Prejudice And Emma, George Eliot's Middlemarch And Daniel Deronda, And Thomas Hardy's The Mayor Of Casterbridge And Tess Of The D'Urbervilles, Juliana Payne
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
In an analysis of six novels published in the nineteenth century, the thesis examines the changing role and portrayal of the 'individual' in Victorian fiction. Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice (1813) and Emma (1816), George Eliot's Middlemarch (1872) and Daniel Deronda (1876), and Thomas Hardy's Mayor of Casterbridge (1886) and Tess of the d'Urbervilles (1891) are analysed in depth. The discussion focuses on how the social and historical context shapes the development of theme, character and plot in the novels, especially focusing on literary conceptions of character as an individualistic being within the wider framework of society. The emphasis is …
Comparative Evaluation Of Commercially Grown Lupin And Mung Sprouts, Sant B. Kaur
Comparative Evaluation Of Commercially Grown Lupin And Mung Sprouts, Sant B. Kaur
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
More than one million tonnes of lupin seed are produced per annum in Western Australia. Lupin can be considered as an alternative to staple pulse food items such as soybeans, peas, chick peas and mung beans. This research was designed to provide potential investors with objective scientifically obtained evidence of the feasibility, and marketing potential, of using lupin as a basis for the commercial development of value added foods, in this case commercially grown lupin sprouts. Sprouts were selected because sprouted lupins are comparable with mung bean sprouts, the market leader, as regards yield and consumer acceptance as a food …
The Experience Of Transferring To Adult Health Care For Adolescents With Cystic Fibrosis, Maree T. Russell
The Experience Of Transferring To Adult Health Care For Adolescents With Cystic Fibrosis, Maree T. Russell
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
As a result of improved treatment and management, adolescents with cystic fibrosis (CF) now have a longer life expectancy. Consequently, more adolescents will be transferred from paediatric to adult health care. Currently, transfer to adult health care takes place on an adhoc basis. Little research however, is available on adolescents with CF and the transfer process to adult health care. This transfer may be viewed as a significant life event for these adolescents and their families. A descriptive approach was used in this study to investigate the experience of transferring to adult health care for adolescents with CF. Seven adolescents …

The Induction Of Beginning Teachers In Western Australian Catholic Primary Schools, Matthew Faulkner
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The survey study was primarily exploratory and descriptive in nature and attempted to report on the perceptions of beginning teachers entering the Catholic primary schools in Western Australia in 1991. Their perceptions on the form of induction they received, and how their pre-service teacher education equipped them for this transition were attained. In addition, data from Catholic primary school principals, Catholic Education Office of Western Australia administrators and teacher institutions administrators were collected in relation to perceptions of the transitions from teacher training to teacher employment. The main sources of data collection were questionnaires and interviews. The data collated indicated …
Victorian Modern Cursive Handwriting In West Australian Schools, Deborah Ann Taylor
Victorian Modern Cursive Handwriting In West Australian Schools, Deborah Ann Taylor
Theses : Honours
The Victorian Modern Cursive script was introduced to Western Australia as the newly recommended handwriting style in 1990. The choice of this handwriting style, which is a foundation style similar to the Simple Modern Hand (Gourdie, 1981), was based upon the prediction that its use would facilitate the transition from beginners' script to full cursive writing. This assumption has not been tested in West Australian schools and hitherto no evaluation of the new handwriting model has been conducted. This study set out to evaluate and compare the legibility and fluency of cursive writing of a group of Year 3 children …
Implications Of Process Control And Decision Control In Victim Mediation And Restitution, F. L. Cefalo
Implications Of Process Control And Decision Control In Victim Mediation And Restitution, F. L. Cefalo
Theses : Honours
This study examines the perceptions of victims and non-victims towards legal procedures which provide a hypothetical victim of property crime varying opportunities to actively participate in the justice process. Some of the variations of victim participation in the procedures examined are comparable to opportunities for victim participation in the procedure victim offender mediation. Other variations represent court procedures In which participation in the justice process by victims of crime is not required. In an experimental scenario study, the first part of this study examines perceptions of fairness of different variations of victim participation in the justice process. The second part …
Non-Selection As A Factor Contributing To Retirement From Australian Sport, Maree B. Fish
Non-Selection As A Factor Contributing To Retirement From Australian Sport, Maree B. Fish
Theses : Honours
Retirement from sport is inevitable and will occur at some stage in every athlete's career. Retirement may be voluntary or involuntary and signifies a lifestyle change that may be a major impact for many athletes. Involuntary retirement may occur in relation to chronological ageing, injury or non-selection. This study undertook an in-depth examination of one type of involuntary exit from sport, that of non-selection. The purpose of this study was to explore, in-depth, the reactions and experiences of Australian athletes who were subject to non-selection from their sport. Supporting this main investigation were three sub questions which focused on factors …
Attitudes Towards Mathematics Of Vietnamese And Non-Vietnamese Senior Secondary Female Students, Robert G. Palmer
Attitudes Towards Mathematics Of Vietnamese And Non-Vietnamese Senior Secondary Female Students, Robert G. Palmer
Theses : Honours
Throughout Australia and indeed in many parts of the world, there is a growing realisation that girls tend not to achieve their full potential at school, especially with regard to higher level mathematics units. Many girls limit their post-school options by choosing not to continue with mathematics when it ceases to be compulsory in Years 11 and 12. They also choose less difficult mathematics units and participate at a level below their potential. Much of the research has focused on gender differences in attitudes towards mathematics, and on participation and achievement in mathematics, but not on ethnic differences. The purpose …
Adult Migrant Learner Perceptions Of Dyadic Interaction In The Learning Of English As A Second Language In Australia, Philip G. Nichols
Adult Migrant Learner Perceptions Of Dyadic Interaction In The Learning Of English As A Second Language In Australia, Philip G. Nichols
Theses : Honours
Student to student dyadic interaction (pairwork) is a recommended activity in the second language learning classroom but if learners do not find it useful or enjoyable, then its effectiveness is reduced and the learners' motivation diminished. In this study a survey questionnaire with both open and closed questions was used to ask 207 intermediate and advanced adult migrant learners of English of diverse ethnicity about their perceptions of pairwork. Twenty-four learners from the sample were interviewed. The results revealed that most students found pairwork useful and enjoyable, but that perceptions differed according to region of origin and to previous language …
Part-Time Work: The Attitudes, Perceptions And Opinions Of Year 11 Students, Marilyn Ralph
Part-Time Work: The Attitudes, Perceptions And Opinions Of Year 11 Students, Marilyn Ralph
Theses : Honours
A large number of full-time secondary students of all types have part-lime jobs although research shows that these jobs are not sought or shared proportionately amongst the student sub-groups. Previous research suggested that social class or socio-economic status (each defined in different ways by different researchers) had an effect on whether or not students engaged in part-lime work. However none suggested why this might be so. The purpose of this study was lo investigate the factors which influenced the decisions which students from different socio-economic backgrounds made about paid part-time work and to determine whether there were differences amongst these …
Dostoevsky Speaks For Ford: A Dialogic Interpretation Of The Good Soldier, Michael Bonner
Dostoevsky Speaks For Ford: A Dialogic Interpretation Of The Good Soldier, Michael Bonner
Theses : Honours
This thesis offers an original interpretation of Ford Madox Ford's novel, The Good Soldier, which focuses on the dialogic and intertextual qualities of Ford's writing. A representative body of previous critical analyses of the novel are reviewed to demonstrate that earlier interpretations, which have assessed the novel according to limited theories of epistemology or language, are inadequate to examine the social criteria for meaning that the novel invites. One of the tasks of this research is to show that the probable origins of Ford's dialogistic narrative modality lie in the writing of Fyodor Dostoevsky. Biographical materials are used to show …
Visualisation Of Inshore Marine Water Depth Data, Karen Powell
Visualisation Of Inshore Marine Water Depth Data, Karen Powell
Theses : Honours
The literature review performed as part of this Project concentrated on two objectives. The first objective was the identification of techniques applicable to the visualisation of the inshore marine water depth data obtained from the Department of Marine & Harbours (M&H). The second objective involved examining how colour is best used within data visualisation. The experimentation investigated a simple method for interpreting movement between depth surveys undertaken by M&H. Although it achieved the objective of creating a longer and smoother animation, it was concluded that the movement of the harbour floor was not accurately represented. The Project applied an optical …
