Diet, Gut Microbiota, And Intestinal Permeability: Emerging Mechanisms In Hypertension Pathogenesis, Esha Vashisht, Helen Nguyen, Francine Z. Marques, Matthew Snelson

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Hypertension is a leading contributor to global morbidity and mortality, arising from the interplay of genetic and environmental risk factors together with the dysregulation of multiple physiological systems involved in blood pressure control. Recent advances have established the gut as a central regulator, implicating the intestinal microbiota and barrier integrity in the modulation of blood pressure. Alterations in the gut microbial consortium, along with changes in levels of metabolites produced by the microbiota, have been associated with blood pressure regulation in animal models and human studies. Key microbial metabolites, including short-chain fatty acids, trimethylamine-N-oxide, and bile acids influence endothelial function, …

Increasing Body Size Unlocks Gelatinous Planktivory In A Key Coral Reef Fish Species, James Gahan, David R. Bellwood, Renato A. Morais, Leo Nankervis, Isabelle Ng, Alexandre C. Siqueira, Cecilia Villacorta-Rath, Sterling B. Tebbett

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Coral reefs depend on the assimilation of off-reef nutrients, particularly from zooplankton, to fuel on-reef productivity. Planktivorous reef fishes thus play a critical role in sustaining a key ecosystem function as the major consumers of plankton. The importance of gelatinous zooplankton to the nutritional ecology of larger-bodied planktivorous fishes is becoming increasingly apparent. Yet, the extent to which feeding on gelatinous plankton within these taxa is a product of ontogeny has not yet been addressed. It has been hypothesised that Caesio cuning, a key planktivorous species that contributes substantially to reef fish biomass on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, undergoes an …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Prokaryote-prokaryote symbiotic relationships influence interactions within microbial communities, affecting colonization, survival, and organization. Unlike competition, consortium species facilitate growth via metabolite cross-feeding. This study explored interactions between two early human gut colonizers: partially aerotolerant Bifidobacterium spp. and strict anaerobic Bacteroides spp., using omics techniques. Promotion of Bacteroides spp. growth by Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis was demonstrated through co-culture experiments in anaerobic conditions. Metabolomic analysis revealed over 150 unique metabolites present in B. animalis subsp. lactis supernatants are absent in other Bifidobacterium species, including 3-hydroxycapric acid, D-alanyl-D-alanine, 2-isopropylmalic acid, and D-glucose 2-phosphate. These compounds served as nutritional substrates, including carbon and …

Epigenetic changes, in particular DNA methylation, accumulate with age across different tissues, but whether these changes follow consistent patterns across different organs remains poorly understood. Here we show, through a meta-analysis of more than 15,000 human methylation profiles spanning 17 tissues, that aging produces both conserved and tissue-specific epigenetic signatures. We identify systemic shifts in methylation levels, increases in methylation variability, and growing molecular disorder across tissues. Network analysis revealed tightly connected gene clusters that are not modified by beneficial interventions, alongside a more modifiable cluster linked to NAD+ metabolism, supporting NAD+ as a potential therapeutic target in …

Engaging with families is a core responsibility of ECEC services and staff. By building positive, personal relationships with families, ECEC staff are able to share concerns or queries about the children in their care in a sensitive way.

One of the more sensitive topics that can come up is food – what they are eating, how much they are eating, their eating behaviours and skills, and everything in between. Through quick conversations at drop-off or via formal communication platforms, services can share a range of information about a child’s eating patterns and behaviours, and also gather information from families to …

Mealtimes in early learning settings are more than a routine to help children eat. They are important opportunities for connection, learning and development, and for supporting children’s confidence and comfort around food and eating. At the same time, services must balance safety, regulatory requirements, diverse developmental and cultural needs, family expectations and practical constraints such as time and staffing.

The Mealtime Environment and Practices (MEP) module has been developed to support Early Childhood Education and Care settings (ECEC), for children from birth to 5 years, to create mealtimes that are safe, calm, inclusive and responsive to each child, while reflecting …

It Will Only Work If Everyone Is On Board: A Needs And Context Assessment To Inform Exercise Oncology Implementation Within A Public Healthcare Organisation, Georgia L. White, Mary A. Kennedy, Bryan A. Chan, Hattie Wright, Grace L. Rose

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Introduction: Exercise has well-established benefits across the cancer continuum for people living with and beyond cancer, yet the exercise oncology field faces a research-to-practice gap. Understanding the factors that influence implementation in any given context is essential to ensure implementation strategies have the greatest likelihood of success. The study mapped onsite exercise oncology services, staff-reported implementation barriers and facilitators, organisational readiness, and experiences reported by people living with or beyond cancer, across a large public healthcare organisation.

Methods: Staff and people living with and beyond cancer across cancer care centres within the public healthcare organisation completed an online survey. Data …

It's The Most Diverse Job I’Ve Ever Had: What Do Registered Nurses Working In Australian Schools Do?, Anita Moyes

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Although nurses have been working in Australian schools for many decades, research has focused primarily on narrow aspects of clinical practice or service delivery in specific regions. The aim of this study was to identify the domains of practice registered nurses report in a typical working day in Australian schools, using interview data from a national sample. Forty-five nurses working in government and nongovernment schools in every state and territory of Australia participated. Interviews were analyzed using inductive content analysis ( Elo & Kyngas, 2008). Six distinct domains of practice characterized nursing work in Australian schools: (i) responding to diverse …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Major League Soccer (MLS) has experienced significant growth since its establishment 30 years ago. However, no research has investigated the on-field performance trends. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine the evolution of MLS match-play via technical and tactical key performance indicators, and investigate the differences between teams according to league finishing position. MLS on-field performance indicators were obtained across six seasons from open-source website FBref. Mean game values were collected from 21 match performance indicators for every MLS team over six seasons. Teams were also classified according to their league finishing position at the conclusion of each …
