The Effect Of Nutrition On The Morphology Of The Wool Follicle, Gail Moriarty Jan 1993

The Effect Of Nutrition On The Morphology Of The Wool Follicle, Gail Moriarty

Theses : Honours

This project was part of a larger CSIRO experiment which was examining the factors involved in the development of tender wool. In order to understand the effect of nutritional variations on wool quality, changes in cellular activity and morphology within the wool follicle were examined. Six sheep with a history of producing low staple strength wool (< 25 N/ktex) and six sheep with a history of producing high staple strength wool (> 30 N/ktex) were selected. The experiment ran for 18 weeks, for the first 10 weeks the sheep were fed a restricted ration to achieve a weight loss of approximately 175g/day. From weeks 11 to 18, the sheep were fed an iso-energetic ration containing …

The Effect Of Canteen Menu On Nutritional Knowledge, Attitudes And Behaviour Of Year Five Students, Sharon Mcbride Jan 1992

The Effect Of Canteen Menu On Nutritional Knowledge, Attitudes And Behaviour Of Year Five Students, Sharon Mcbride

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Eating habits are learned during childhood, and patterns of behaviour established in childhood have important health ramifications throughout life. Over half of all deaths in Australia are linked to diet with over-consumption of saturated fat, sugar and salt, and lack of fibre being identified as particular problem areas. Nutrition education is an important component of primary health education curricula, and yet school canteens, and integral part of the school environment, do not necessarily offer healthy food choices that support nutrition instruction in the classroom. This study investigated the effect of canteen menu on student knowledge and attitudes toward nutrition and …

A Case Study Of Two Year Six Classes Involved In A Health-Related Fitness Intervention, Andrew T. Medland Jan 1992

A Case Study Of Two Year Six Classes Involved In A Health-Related Fitness Intervention, Andrew T. Medland

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Children are not as active as they may appear and they do not voluntarily engage in moderate to high intensity activity as commonly perceived by the general public. With coronary heart disease risk factors now found to have origins in childhood there is a real need for children to adopt lifestyles that will produce healthier adults. In Perth the Western Australian Schools Physical Activity and Nutrition project (WASPAN) has been implemented, as a Year 6 intervention, addressing the problems of poor nutritional habits and low activity levels. The focus of this case-study was to describe the physical activity component of …

Research outputs pre 2011

An Investigation into the identification of indicators of quality care for outside school hours was undertaken.

Data was derived from a survey of 252 parents with children currently attending after school care in W.A., and compared with the indicators of quality developed by the Joint Review of the Commonwealth Department of Community Services and Commonwealth Public Service Board on Outside School Hours Care, Vacation Care and Adventure Playgrounds. Although parents identified specific indicators of quality care, the findings were consistent with those of the Review.

Comparing these findings with the extensive current research on pre-school care indicators of quality, suggested …

Recreation Benefits: The Benefit-Based Approach To Recreation Planning; Why Wellness; Personal/Social Relationships And Wellness, Elery Hamilton Smith Jan 1991

Recreation Benefits: The Benefit-Based Approach To Recreation Planning; Why Wellness; Personal/Social Relationships And Wellness, Elery Hamilton Smith

Research outputs pre 2011

The identification and measurement of the benefits which result from leisure and recreation is currently a major concern of both recreation researchers and recreation managers. It has always been assumed that recreation is beneficial; in fact, part of the basic ideology of recreation is that recreational activity is 'bad' for somebody and has also diverted attention from the very important task of developing a critical and valid understanding of what benefits actually result and how they are generated...

An Evaluation Of Comparative Strategies For Teaching Breast Self-Examination, Julia Agars

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This study addresses the issue of breast self-examination (BSE) in female nurses, as nurses who perform BSE are more likely to promote BSE to their clients. The purpose of the study is twofold: first, to assess the effects of three alternative methods of BSE instruction on nurses’ BSE practice; and second, to determine the influence of nurses’ health beliefs on their practice of BSE. Previous studies have indicated that various teaching strategies have improved BSE practice. However, the three methods of BSE instruction to be assessed on this study which includes booklet with written instruction, film and group discussion, and …

Do Nurses Write Nursing Diagnoses Correctly?, Graeme Neil Boardley Jan 1991

Do Nurses Write Nursing Diagnoses Correctly?, Graeme Neil Boardley

Theses : Honours

In this study it was proposed to examine the effect of educational intervention on nurses' abilities to write nursing diagnostic statements. Studies have shown that the way nurses write nursing diagnoses is an area of weakness in the overall documentation process, and this was perceived by the researcher as being true also in Western Australia. One reason for this, identified in the literature, appears to be lack of education in writing nursing diagnoses. This study was conducted in a 190-bed public hospital using an experimental research design, using control and experimental groups to test the hypothesis that nurses' abilities to …

Creativity In Aboriginal Students And The Implications For Language Teaching, Raeme Goves-Jacka

Theses : Honours

The current level of scholastic success of Aboriginal students in Western Australian schools is overviewed together with some concerns regarding Aboriginal cognition. The issues which appear to inhibit in Aboriginal children the sort of cognitive development which is beneficial for schooling are reviewed. These are seen as cultural discontinuity, Vygotsky's belief in the cultural transmission of language, political constraints and the concept that different cultures with different needs produce different modes of thinking. Aboriginal child rearing practices are also reviewed together with the definition, process and product of creativity. The review also deals with the creative person, the creative environment, …

The Effect Of An In-Service Lecture On Diabetes On Nurses' Attitudes To Diabetes Patient Education, Jennifer A. Walters Jan 1989

The Effect Of An In-Service Lecture On Diabetes On Nurses' Attitudes To Diabetes Patient Education, Jennifer A. Walters

Theses : Honours

Patient education has been shown to be a major factor in improving the compliance and self-care skills of diabetic patients, thereby improving the quality of life for the patient. Nurses have an important role in diabetes patient education. Research has indicated, however, that barriers such as lack of knowledge and negative attitudes may prevent nurses from effectively delivering this care to their patients. The purpose of this experimental study was to determine whether increasing the knowledge of registered nurses through an in-service lecture on diabetes would improve their attitudes towards diabetes education. The conceptual framework for the study proposed that …

Attitudes Towards Migrants And Needs In Teacher Training : Some Research Findings, R. W. Sealey Jan 1980

Attitudes Towards Migrants And Needs In Teacher Training : Some Research Findings, R. W. Sealey

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The area of immigrant education has become a major source of interest, concern, comment, and research in recent years. This interest has its origins in the concern felt and views expressed at various conferences that many pupils in our schools are in need of an educational approach which will take cognisance of their linguistic and cultural differences.

Nutrition And The Primary School Child, Andrew P. Hills Jan 1980

Nutrition And The Primary School Child, Andrew P. Hills

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

With a greater range of foodstuffs available today, it is necessary to educate children in choosing the correct foods to eat, and why they should eat them in preference to others. The concept of nutrition is related closely to the growth and well being of the child and subsequently should be an important part of a child's primary school education.

A Survey On Children's Ability To Distinguish Television Commercials From Programme Material, Churchlands College Of Advanced Education Jan 1978

A Survey On Children's Ability To Distinguish Television Commercials From Programme Material, Churchlands College Of Advanced Education

Research outputs pre 2011

It is clear from the available evidence that television advertising does have an influence on children.Numerous research studies have demonstrated that children seem to learn from commercials, and that advertising is at least moderately successful in creating positive attitudes towards and the desire for products advertised. A strong determinant of children's perception of television advertising is the child's age. Research studies clearly establish that children become more skilled in evaluating television advertising as they grow older, and that to treat all children from 2 - 12 as one group makes important, perhaps crucial differences...

Energy Expenditure Of Grade Four School Children In Western Australia, T. W. Odgers, S. C. Langelaan, J. Henzell, C. Chapman Jan 1976

Energy Expenditure Of Grade Four School Children In Western Australia, T. W. Odgers, S. C. Langelaan, J. Henzell, C. Chapman

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

A composite team from the Public Health Service, the West Australian Institute of Technology, and the Graylands Teachers College conducted surveys on grade 7 children in 1974, and grade 4 children in 1975. The intention of the surveys was to find some relationship between the energy expenditure and the energy intake of each age group. As there is little information concerning the activity patterns of West Australian children the findings of these surveys would serve as a basis for more detailed reports into the physical fitness, activity and dietary balance of children in today's changing society. The study reported below …

Survey Of Education Of Aboriginal Children In Selected Western Australian Schools : (Preliminary Survey), C. Makin, D. Ibbotson Jan 1973

Survey Of Education Of Aboriginal Children In Selected Western Australian Schools : (Preliminary Survey), C. Makin, D. Ibbotson

Research outputs pre 2011

Information was sought late in 1972 about problems encountered by teachers in schools with a fairly high proportion of Aboriginal children. For this purpose a questionnaire was designed to elicit information about the school situation, the surrounding community, enrolment, age and experience of the teaching staff and actual pedagogical problems encountered and methods of dealing with them. Another principle aim was to ascertain the extent to which the curiculum had been adapted to local situations and to determine what implications this might have for pre-service and in-service training.

Social Science Source Book, Colin J. Marsh Jan 1971

Social Science Source Book, Colin J. Marsh

Research outputs pre 2011

During 1970, first year students at Mount Lawley Teachers' College undertook a course entitled. An Introduction to the Social Sciences. Courses in Social Science and Social Studies are not new, having been tried with varying degrees of success in other states of Australia and in overseas countries. However, in the course at this college, a multidiscipline approach has been planned, with Metropolitan Perth as the focal point of the study.

Too often, students enter a teachers' college with a 'wad' of factual knowledge about History or Economics or Geography. In the hustle and bustle of preparing for external examinations, they have …
