Seniors Language Paradigms: 21st Century Jargon And The Impact On Computer Security And Financial Transactions For Senior Citizens, David M. Cook, Patryk Szewczyk, Krishnun Sansurooah
Seniors Language Paradigms: 21st Century Jargon And The Impact On Computer Security And Financial Transactions For Senior Citizens, David M. Cook, Patryk Szewczyk, Krishnun Sansurooah
Australian Information Security Management Conference
Senior Citizens represent a unique cohort of computer users insomuch as they have come to the field of computer usage later in life, as novices compared to other users. As a group they exhibit a resentment, mistrust and ignorance towards cyber related technology that is born out of their educational and social experiences prior to widespread information technology. The shift from analogue to digital proficiency has been understated for a generation of citizens who were educated before computer usage and internet ubiquity. This paper examines the language difficulties encountered by senior citizens in attempting to engage in banking and communications …

International Field Experience – What Do Student Teachers Learn?, Jackie Fung King Lee
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
This inquiry aimed to examine the benefits of having international field experience for a group of Hong Kong postgraduate student teachers who joined a six-week immersion programme in New Zealand. Through participants’ reflections, interviews and programme evaluations, the present investigation found that the overseas field experience not only enriched their cultural understanding, pedagogical knowledge and skills, but also enhanced their language awareness, classroom language and recognition of different English varieties
An Analysis And Comparison Of Predominant Word Sense Disambiguation Algorithms, David J. Craggs
An Analysis And Comparison Of Predominant Word Sense Disambiguation Algorithms, David J. Craggs
Theses : Honours
This thesis investigates research performed in the area of natural language processing. It is the aim of this research to compare a selection of predominant word sense disambiguation algorithms, and also determine if they can be optimised by small changes to the parameters used by the algorithms. To perform this research, several word sense disambiguation algorithms will be implemented in Java, and run on a range of test corpora. The algorithms will be judged on metrics such as speed and accuracy, and any other results obtained; while an algorithm may be fast and accurate, there may be other factors making …
Enhancing Automated Red Teaming With Monte Carlo Tree Search, Daniel Beard
Enhancing Automated Red Teaming With Monte Carlo Tree Search, Daniel Beard
Theses : Honours
This study has investigated novel Automated Red Teaming methods that support replanning. Traditional Automated Red Teaming (ART) approaches usually use evolutionary computing methods for evolving plans using simulations. A drawback of this method is the inability to change a team’s strategy part way through a simulation. This study focussed on a Monte-Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) method in an ART environment that supports re-planning to lead to better strategy decisions and a higher average score
Structure Strategy Use In Children's Comprehension Of Expository Texts, John V. Holsgrove
Structure Strategy Use In Children's Comprehension Of Expository Texts, John V. Holsgrove
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This study reviewed a body of literature largely written between the mid 1970s and 1990s that was concerned with the rhetorical structure of written expository text and its relationship to memory and comprehension. This dissertation follows from an argument that the earlier research often confused memory and comprehension and that it was limited in its attempt to clarify the relationship between text structure and reading comprehension. The current study sought to provide a fuller description of the manner in which schoolchildren of different ages and abilities employ rhetorical structure in the comprehension process. In contrast to the earlier research this …
Creating Persuasive Messages To Promote Abstinence From Alcohol During Pregnancy, Kathryn France
Creating Persuasive Messages To Promote Abstinence From Alcohol During Pregnancy, Kathryn France
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
While the rates of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder within Australia are unknown, the rates of alcohol use during pregnancy and at-risk alcohol use by women of childbearing age highlight the need for universal prevention strategies addressing prenatal alcohol exposure. Though many awareness-raising campaigns for alcohol use during pregnancy have been conducted, predominantly in North America, they have rarely been developed using formative research nor have they been comprehensively evaluated (Saskatchewan Prevention Institute, 2009; Elliott et al., 2008). This lack of published information on the development and evaluation of campaigns makes it difficult to determine what communication elements are most credible …
Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Carers' Perceptions Of The Cultural Appropriateness Of Carer Support Services: An Exploratory Study, Andrea Creado
Theses : Honours
Research on service utilisation by primary family carers has highlighted that carers from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds face specific barriers in accessing services, such as lack of culturally appropriate services, communication issues, prejudice, feelings of failure and misunderstanding of mental illness. However, little is known about how to best overcome these factors from the carers' perspective. The aim of this study was to investigate the perceptions CALD carers had of the cultural appropriateness of carers' support services available in Perth. Ten primary family carers from CALD backgrounds participated in a semi-structured interview to explore their perceptions of existing …
Speaking In Thai, Dreaming In Isan: Popular Thai Television And Emerging Identities Of Lao Isan Youth Living In Northeast Thailand, Catherine Hesse-Swain
Speaking In Thai, Dreaming In Isan: Popular Thai Television And Emerging Identities Of Lao Isan Youth Living In Northeast Thailand, Catherine Hesse-Swain
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This is an ethnographic study of how Lao Isan youth living in the northeastern provincial capital Khon Kaen and nearby town Mahasarakham experience Thainess or khwampenthai in its most popular form – television. People who inhabit the northeast of Thailand interchangeably label themselves and are labelled by others as Isan, Thai Isan, Lao Isan, Thai or Lao, depending on the ethnic, political, social or familial nuances of any given situation. I use the term Lao Isan to refer specifically to Isan people of Lao origin or ethnicity. Lao Isan are subject to complex and often competing notions of Isanness, Laoness …
The Impact Of Student Created Slowmation On The Teaching And Learning Of Primary Science, Jeffrey Brown
The Impact Of Student Created Slowmation On The Teaching And Learning Of Primary Science, Jeffrey Brown
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Current research indicates that although innovations in science teaching are having a positive impact on science education in many Australian schools, national and international assessments show that student achievement is not improving (Hackling & Prain, 2008; Thomson, Wernet, Underwood, & Nicholas, 2008). Furthermore, there is little or no increase in the number of students choosing science as a post-compulsory study option or as a career path. There remains a need to further develop innovative teaching methods that promote the development of students‟ scientific literacy, engenders a joy of science learning through student engagement and encourages a desire to pursue further …
From Essay To Resumé : A Study Of Writing Genre And Discursive Positioning In Senior School English, Jennifer Shand
From Essay To Resumé : A Study Of Writing Genre And Discursive Positioning In Senior School English, Jennifer Shand
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
In 2004, the Western Australian government signalled its intention to increase the school leaving age from 15 to 17 by 2008 (Carpenter, 2004). During the period from 2004 to 2006, increasing numbers of young Western Australians completed twelve years of secondary school. For English faculties in Western Australian schools, this resulted in a notably diverse cohort of students undertaking compulsory English studies in their final two years of school. The central aim of this thesis was to examine what it means to be a writer in senior school English. In doing so, the thesis investigated the construction of student writing …
Hearts And Minds, Psuedo Gangs And Counter Insurgency: Based Upon Experiences From Previous Campaigns In Kenya (1952-60), Malaya (1948-60) & Rhodesia (1964-1979), Bill Bailey
Australian Counter Terrorism Conference
Pseudo gangs form the steely side of Hearts and Minds and were used with great effect in counter-insurgency campaigns in Kenya (1952-60) Malaya (1948-60) and Rhodesia (1964-1979). Although the use of pseudo gangs was not new to counter-insurgency tactics, with the British using a similar tactic in the Boer war (1899-1902), the use of such gangs was certainly perfected during these later campaigns producing good results. The Kenya Police Special Branch re-instigated this concept, developing its use during the ‘Emergency’. The principal concept was to ‘turn’ or co-opt insurgents through a series of inducements to change sides and join the …
Organisational Resilience: A Propositional Study To Understand And Identify The Essential Concepts, Bruce Braes, David Brooks
Organisational Resilience: A Propositional Study To Understand And Identify The Essential Concepts, Bruce Braes, David Brooks
Australian Security and Intelligence Conference
Increased exposure to turmoil has raised business, social and governmental concerns over the ability of organisations to anticipate and respond positively to disruptions. Organisations are spending increased sums of money to raise levels of security; however, Organisational Resilience is a vague, multidisciplined and diverse philosophy, requiring a multiplicity of skills and knowledge that reaches far beyond security alone. The resilience domain is still developing and expanding; however, early embodiments of Organisational Resilience, originating in the United Kingdom and the United States, were nothing more than a rebranding of business continuity management strategies, put together as a ‘resilience processes’, or ‘resilience …
Anomaly Detection Over User Profiles For Intrusion Detection, Grant Pannell, Helen Ashman
Anomaly Detection Over User Profiles For Intrusion Detection, Grant Pannell, Helen Ashman
Australian Information Security Management Conference
Intrusion detection systems (IDS) have often been used to analyse network traffic to help network administrators quickly identify and respond to intrusions. These detection systems generally operate over the entire network, identifying “anomalies” atypical of the network’s normal collective user activities. We show that anomaly detection could also be host-based so that the normal usage patterns of an individual user could be profiled. This enables the detection of masquerading intruders by comparing a learned user profile against the current session’s profile. A prototype behavioural IDS applies the concept of anomaly detection to user behaviour and compares the effects of using …
I Was Banging My Head Against A Brick Wall: Exclusionary Power And The Gendering Of Sport Organizations, Ruth Sibson
I Was Banging My Head Against A Brick Wall: Exclusionary Power And The Gendering Of Sport Organizations, Ruth Sibson
Research outputs pre 2011
The under-representation of women in sport management has increasingly been recognized by government and nongovernment organizations, and there has been some attempt to redress the imbalance. Research has indicated, however, that the gendering of sport organizations is not simply a numbers' game. The purpose of this study was to analyze the exercise of exclusionary power as an aspect of gender relations within a six member volunteer Board of Directors of an Australian local, grass-roots sport organization. Data were gathered using semistructured interviews, participant observation and documentary evidence over a 15-month period. This study identified that, although numerical under-representation of men …
A New Design For A Turing Test For Bots, Philip Hingston
A New Design For A Turing Test For Bots, Philip Hingston
Research outputs pre 2011
Interesting, human-like opponents add to the entertainment value of a video game, and creating such opponents is a difficult challenge for programmers. Can artificial intelligence and computational intelligence provide the means to convincingly simulate a human opponent? Or are simple programming tricks and deceptions more effective? To answer these questions, the author designed and organised a game bot programming competition, the BotPrize, in which competitors submit bots that try to pass a “Turing Test for Bots”. In this paper, we describe a new design for the competition, which will make it simpler to run, and, we hope, open up new …

Complexities Of Assessing Social And Emotional Competence And Wellbeing In Young Children, Lennie Barblett, Carmel Maloney
Research outputs pre 2011
Developing positive social and emotional growth and development in young children has always been a fundamental priority of early childhood practitioners. However, with an increasing economic and political focus on the foundational early childhood years, there has been a global push for the measurement of outcomes in early childhood education. This paper reports the findings of a major literature review to examine the assessment of social and emotional competence and wellbeing in young children. The review was conducted by a team at Edith Cowan University as part of project funded by the Western Australian Department of Education and Training. It …

Writing In Light: Giving Silences Their Say In Janette Turner Hospital's "The Last Magician", Niva Kaspi
Theses : Honours
The last magician (1992) by Janette Turner Hospital tells the story of Lucy, the novel's narrator, who is trying to piece together the mystery disappearance and possible murder of three people. Gabriel, Lucy's boyfriend, and Charlie Chang, a photographer, have gone missing while searching for Cat, Charlie's childhood friend. The story shifts between present time Sydney and a tragedy that took place a generation earlier in rural Queensland, involving the death of Cat's younger brother, Willy. The novel draws on conventions of the mystery genre, so that readers desire to know what has happened to several missing characters, even as …
Schools As Sites Of Race Relations And Intercultural Tension, Fethi Mansouri, Louise Jenkins
Schools As Sites Of Race Relations And Intercultural Tension, Fethi Mansouri, Louise Jenkins
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Australia’s education system endeavours to provide an environment in which students can learn in a safe and comfortable manner, free of fear of verbal or physical abuse. However, for many schools, the ability to create this safe environment has been undermined by a recent rise in society-wide intercultural tensions that inevitably permeate the school boundary. Empirical data from a national project about racism among Australian youth provides evidence that these intercultural tensions are generating an unsettling level of verbal, and in some cases, physical abuse in Australian secondary schools. These project findings inform the discussion presented in this paper that …
Fostering Nonverbal Immediacy And Teacher Identity Through An Acting Course In English Teacher Education, Kemal Sinan Özmen
Fostering Nonverbal Immediacy And Teacher Identity Through An Acting Course In English Teacher Education, Kemal Sinan Özmen
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
This research study focuses on integrating acting theories in pre-service English teacher education so as to improve nonverbal immediacy behavior and to contribute to the development process of teacher identity. Studies on incorporation of acting literature into teacher education provide educators with some significant findings clearly indicating that certain teacher competences can be fostered effectively by benefiting from acting theories and practices. While focusing on different aspects and competences of the teaching profession, these studies are in a general accord with the idea that teacher education programs should give more attention to actor preparation theories and techniques so as to …

Cultivating Teachers’ Beliefs, Knowledge And Skills For Leading Change In Schools, Suzanne Carrington, Joanne Deppeler, Julianne Moss
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Australian policy initiatives and state curriculum reform efforts affirm a commitment to address student disengagement through the development of inclusive school environments, curriculum, and pedagogy. This paper, drawing on critical social theory, describes three Australian projects that support the cultivation of teachers’ beliefs, knowledge and skills for critical reflection and leading change in schools. The first project reports on the valued ethics that emerged in pre-service teacher reflections about a Service-learning Program at a university in Queensland. The second project reports on a school-based collaborative inquiry approach to professional development with a focus on literacy practices. The final project reports …

Preparing Pre-Service Teachers For Multicultural Classrooms, Jessica Aimée Premier, Jenny Miller
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Cultural diversity is evident throughout schools in Victoria, Australia. Many students are new arrivals from war-torn countries including Sudan, Afghanistan and Iraq. To what extent do teacher training courses in Victoria prepare pre-service teachers to cater for the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) students? This paper reports findings from a qualitative study on pre-service preparation for teaching CALD students in mainstream secondary schools. It investigated ways in which CALD student needs are addressed in secondary teaching courses in Victoria. Data included course outlines, questionnaires completed by forty-one final year pre-service teachers, and interviews with four final year pre-service …

Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Reflective teaching practice has become a central theme in professional growth at the pre-service teacher education level almost everywhere. English language teaching (ELT) teacher trainers, like any other teacher trainers, have a powerful role to play in fostering reflection in their student teachers through the approaches and strategies they incorporate in their training, which can have implications related to the perceived worth of reflective practice. This quantitative study describes the responses of 90 final-year ELT student teachers and eight of their trainers at Sultan Qaboos University in the Sultanate of Oman, to a survey about the roles, approaches and strategies …
Towards A Classroom Pedagogy For Learner Autonomy: A Framework Of Independent Language Learning Skills, Hayo Reinders
Towards A Classroom Pedagogy For Learner Autonomy: A Framework Of Independent Language Learning Skills, Hayo Reinders
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
In recent years there has been a growing recognition of the importance of learner autonomy and the role of individual learners in directing their own learning process, both inside and outside the classroom (Alford & Pachler, 2007; Benson, 2000; Breen, 2001; Conacher & Kelly-Holmes, 2007). However, in practice it is not always clear how to support learners in this role, and how to ensure they are ready to assume it. This paper explores some of the teaching aspects related to the development of learner autonomy and proposes a framework of skills that could be used by teachers as a guide …

The Impact On Final Year Pre-Service Secondary Teachers Of A Unit In Teaching Literacy And Numeracy Across The Curriculum, Paul White, Maya Cranitch
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Addressing literacy and numeracy as social practices in different teaching content areas create challenges for teachers and teacher education. Literacy and numeracy skills and understandings are generally addressed incidentally in teacher education courses and often overlooked by teachers in secondary schools. This paper reports on a study which examined the impact of a unit called ‘Curriculum Literacies’ in the final year of a Secondary Bachelor of Teaching/ Bachelor of Arts course. The unit developed students’ personal skills and understanding of literacy and numeracy and their application to teaching in particular discipline areas. Findings show the unit had positive effects on …
