“Basic Stuff I Should Know About My Kids, I Don’T Know”: Incarcerated Mothers’ Perception Of Incarceration’S Effects On Mother-Child Relationships, Narissa Haakmat
Online Theses and Dissertations
Tougher sentencing policies have resulted in a dramatic increase in the jail and prison populations in the United States over the past few decades. The number of women who are spending time behind bars have vastly increased as a result of this. Despite increased interest in this area of research, a variety of questions remain as to how women experience incarceration. Most women who are incarcerated are mothers, but few criminologists have explored how imprisonment affects motherhood and mothers’ perception of the mother-child relationship during incarceration. The research presented here contributes to this body of literature by exploring the effects …
Vaccinate Her? I Hardly Know Her!: Understanding Vaccine Hesitancy, Zachary M. Marcum
Vaccinate Her? I Hardly Know Her!: Understanding Vaccine Hesitancy, Zachary M. Marcum
Honors Theses
Vaccines are a first defense against highly communicable diseases such as measles. For vaccines to protect the population, a vast majority must be vaccinated to maintain herd immunity. Vaccine hesitancy is delaying vaccination from the suggested schedule or refusing vaccination outright. The hesitance is commonly portrayed as a lack of knowledge or scientific literacy. But highly educated people are still just as likely to be hesitant. The basis of hesitance is likely ethically similar to that of vaccination. Understanding the methods of the vaccine hesitant will better inform attempts to persuade them. Individuals have an obligation to the community to …
Blue Lives Memorialized: Collective Memory And The Production Of Ideology And Injustice In American Policing, Douglas Hyatt Peach
Blue Lives Memorialized: Collective Memory And The Production Of Ideology And Injustice In American Policing, Douglas Hyatt Peach
Online Theses and Dissertations
Police memorials are physical objects in public spaces, objects which seed our own cultural and personal ideologies, beliefs, and behaviors and which command our collective attention. Using qualitative research methodology, this visual ethnography looks at the unique and inherent power of police memorialization through the 2015 death of officer Daniel Ellis of the Richmond, Kentucky police department and the subsequent actions of the surrounding community and state officials. The purpose of this study was to document the widespread visual culture and iconography associated with memorialization, including the origin and placement of physical memorials made in honor of Ellis, thin blue …
Guerilla Government And Policy: Lessons From The Trump Administration’S Family Separation Policy, Omar Salinas Chacon
Guerilla Government And Policy: Lessons From The Trump Administration’S Family Separation Policy, Omar Salinas Chacon
Online Theses and Dissertations
In early 2017, two asylum officers went to reporters at Reuters to warn the public of a new immigration policy. This policy would see thousands of children separated from their parents; a humanitarian crisis engineered purposefully by the administration would be underway for the next years. Along the way, dissenters would try to stop the administration’s policy. In her seminal work The Ethics of Dissent: Managing Guerilla Government, O’Leary (2019) describes these types of events as guerilla government. Guerilla government occurs when public servants work against the desires of their superiors either out in the open or covertly. This is …
Hiding In Plain Sight: Ghosted Police Vehicles And The Perception Of Police Presence On College Campuses, Mackenzie Kibler
Hiding In Plain Sight: Ghosted Police Vehicles And The Perception Of Police Presence On College Campuses, Mackenzie Kibler
Online Theses and Dissertations
Previous research has shown that police presence, which involves visibility of law enforcement personnel, is often related to perceptions of individual safety and individual behavior. The purpose of this study was to explore perceptions of college students and campus law enforcement regarding visibility of and citizen/police interaction on Eastern Kentucky University’s campus. The first phase of this project was designed to measure student awareness and visibility of “ghosted” police vehicles, which are black with matte black markings on the doors and have few easily visible indicators of law enforcement vehicles, versus other police types of police vehicles on campus. The …
Big Fire, Big Water: An Evaluation Of Fire Service Tactics In High-Rise And Standpipe Equipped Structures, Nicholas J. Brondum
Big Fire, Big Water: An Evaluation Of Fire Service Tactics In High-Rise And Standpipe Equipped Structures, Nicholas J. Brondum
Honors Theses
Fighting fires in high-rise buildings poses numerous distinct challenges to the fire service. Fires are now growing faster and release more heat than ever before. To combat these fires, firefighters have numerous additional tasks created by the challenge of high-rise buildings compared to other structures. Even the simplest tasks such as supplying water and advancing hoses are much more difficult in these buildings. The results of this presentation were obtained through extensive literature review as well as extrapolated data from empirical research obtained through field testing conducted by the presenter and by nationally recognized research facilities such as Underwriters Laboratories …
Testing The Marshall Hypothesis: A Survey Among Justice And Safety College Students, Kimberly Alice Barrett
Testing The Marshall Hypothesis: A Survey Among Justice And Safety College Students, Kimberly Alice Barrett
Online Theses and Dissertations
In his concurrence with the Supreme Court ruling in Furman v. Georgia (1972), Justice Thurgood Marshall postulated that levels of support for capital punishment are associated with the amount of knowledge about the death penalty process. He suggested that exposure to information about capital punishment produces sentiments in opposition to capital punishment except in instances for which support is based on retributive beliefs. These notions have become known as the Marshall Hypothesis and have been empirically tested among a variety of populations. The research presented in this thesis adds to that body of literature by testing these ideas among a …
An Examination Of Clery Crime Statistics At Four Year Public Institutions Of Higher Education Served By Or Without Dedicated University Police Departments, Bryan Makinen
Online Theses and Dissertations
This paper was written to examine the impact of dedicated university police departments relative to reporting Clery statistics, fundamental information that prospective students and their parents can use in selecting an institution of higher education. The prospect of gaining knowledge and bettering one’s life occurs best when taking place in a safe and transparent environment. While college and university campuses are not immune to crime, similar to society as a whole, they are statistically safer places by which learning can occur.
The college years are instrumental in shaping the lives and mindset of America’s youth by exposing them to a …
Legalization Of Medical Cannabis And Potential Implications For Healthcare Delivery In The United States, Lauren N. Cornett
Legalization Of Medical Cannabis And Potential Implications For Healthcare Delivery In The United States, Lauren N. Cornett
Kentucky Journal of Undergraduate Scholarship
Cannabis legalization is currently a topic of significant interest within the American healthcare system. Existing research has demonstrated the effects of medical cannabis in alleviating manifestations of several common health conditions which affect many Americans, including cancer and chronic pain. Additionally, research has demonstrated that medical cannabis programs have positive implications for the objectives of government health initiatives such as the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Triple Aim. Economic benefits from cannabis taxation have also been documented in states with active medical cannabis programs. While federal restrictions inhibit extensive cannabis research, the legalization of medical cannabis has significant implications for …

When Law Enforcement And Individuals With Autism Spectrum Disorder Meet: Asd Knowledge And Confidence In Law Enforcement Officers In The Commonwealth Of Kentucky, Nicholas P. Hoffmann
Honors Theses
The purpose of this study is to examine the current training practices, as well as the knowledge and confidence that law enforcement officers possessed with regards to interacting with individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) as reported by the officers. It is expected that the level of training will be highly inadequate in the Commonwealth of Kentucky due to lack of available training and resources available to officers, as well as the lack of mental health training requirements. This project does not seek to criticize officers, but rather to assess the current overall status of their training as well as …
The Tower: Prison Architecture And The Verticality Of Carcerality, Jordan Frazier
The Tower: Prison Architecture And The Verticality Of Carcerality, Jordan Frazier
Online Theses and Dissertations
The architecture of incarceration has undergone many well-documented changes since the late 18th Century. However, one of the constants has been the architectural symbolism of incarceration itself, and the role it plays in communicating ideas about punishment and control. In this thesis, I examine one of the most fundamental logics of control within this architecture that has largely gone unquestioned: verticality. Specifically, my interest lies in the role that verticality plays in the form of the prison gun tower, which I link to other measures of vertical dominance, such as the aerial drone, and the fortified hilltop. To better situate …
Federal Preparedness Grants: An Investigation Of The Impacts To Local And State Emergency Management Programs, Brian Alan Barnes
Federal Preparedness Grants: An Investigation Of The Impacts To Local And State Emergency Management Programs, Brian Alan Barnes
Online Theses and Dissertations
Disasters begin and end locally, but anecdotal evidence suggests that national disaster policies significantly influence state and local approaches. The federal government influences local and state emergency management through national emergency management doctrine as well as providing considerable grant programs to local and state governments who adopt the federal policies. The study attempts to explore some effects of this policy dichotomy.
A survey along with selective interviews were conducted of local and state emergency management officials in North Carolina to examine the impacts of select federal preparedness grants. From 70 surveys and 6 interviews, the following findings were identified. There …
Assessing Collateral Consequences Accompanying Sex Offender Registration, Mikayla Brooke Charles
Assessing Collateral Consequences Accompanying Sex Offender Registration, Mikayla Brooke Charles
Online Theses and Dissertations
Sex Offenders are often the most feared group of offenders. In response to this fear, sex offender registries were created as a method for monitoring convicted offenders and for providing communities with a sense of security by publicizing information about potential predators nearby. The underlying questions are whether or not notification and registration laws actually reduce crime and make the community safer. According to the literature, and to the current study, they do not. However, community safety and recidivism rates are not the only factors that pose concern attributed to registration and notification. Researchers alike have argued that these practices …

Livesafe: Increasing Bystander Intervention At Eastern Kentucky University, Katie Victoria Scott
Honors Theses
This paper reviews the procurement and implementation of the LiveSafe safety application at Eastern Kentucky University and its impact on increasing bystander intervention for the campus community. LiveSafe was launched on February 1, 2016, and all data is based off the first ten weeks of availability (February 1st to April 10th). Metrics that will be reviewed and compared include “safe walks,” reported tips, and emergency messages. Because of the novelty of cellphone safety applications, there is little scholarship on the empirical impact of these application or the perception of students in regards to their safety on campuses …
Policing Celebratory Behavior: Tactical Vs. Relationship, A Micro Study Of Lexington Kentucky Police Response, Gregg Nelson Jones
Policing Celebratory Behavior: Tactical Vs. Relationship, A Micro Study Of Lexington Kentucky Police Response, Gregg Nelson Jones
Online Theses and Dissertations
In the last three plus decades, considerable attention has been given to certain common phases in the life cycle of gatherings, demonstrations, and riots in the United States. Much of the study focuses on theoretical origin and social psychology associated with each type of event. There is considerably less empirical work regarding police reaction to these events, particularly concerning celebratory behavior following a sporting event. Celebratory incidents are less organized than their protests counterpart. A variety of fans with collective zeal gather in a common location without leadership or mission. Celebratory behavior has become commonplace amongst fans in cities with …

First Responder Training Transfer: Does Training Delivery Method Matter?, Brian Keith Simpkins
First Responder Training Transfer: Does Training Delivery Method Matter?, Brian Keith Simpkins
Online Theses and Dissertations
Technology-based training solutions are increasingly being utilized by organizations to achieve training objectives at lower costs as compared to traditional instructor-led training (ILT). This is especially true for the Nation’s first responder agencies that continue to face difficulties related to expanding training requirements that are pitted against limitations in agency financial and human resources. Despite the proliferation in the use of technology-based training solutions, such as web-based training (WBT), there is little research within the first responder community as to whether WBT is as effective as ILT in enabling trainees to transfer essential knowledge, skills, abilities (KSAs) from a training …
Fire Service Leadership And The Impact Of Civil And Criminal Litigation On Officer Recruitment And Retention, Cameron Edward Borchert
Fire Service Leadership And The Impact Of Civil And Criminal Litigation On Officer Recruitment And Retention, Cameron Edward Borchert
Online Theses and Dissertations
Litigation in any industry is a driving force in the need for change management. There are very few industries that have not felt the direct effects of liability and litigation. For generations the fire service has enjoyed a sort of protected status as a result of the general good will the public has offered. There are many reasons for this, not the least of which being that firefighters routinely will risk their lives in the service of others. However, in recent years, fire departments across the United States have experienced increasing incidents of civil and criminal litigation. The core issue …
An Assessment Of The Relationship Of Online Technical Resources Developed By The National Weather Service (Nws) And United State Geological Survey (Usgs) And The Analysis Of Their Usage By Kentucky Emergency Managers During Preparedness, Response, Recovery, And Mitigation, Keith Joy
Online Theses and Dissertations
Emergency management tasks are essentially uncertain. They require information sharing and quick decision making that incorporates coordination across a vast array of individuals and organizations. During an emergency, communication is key during all four phases of the emergency management process; preparedness, response, recovery, mitigation. In order to communicate effectively and systematically with the incident management team, emergency managers must establish situational awareness during a disaster. Obtaining optimal situational awareness requires emergency managers to use an assortment of technologies in order to relay the most accurate information in real time. The focus of this research is on those technologies and the …

Synthetic Cannabinoids: Law Vs. Science, Melissa R. Sterling
Synthetic Cannabinoids: Law Vs. Science, Melissa R. Sterling
Honors Theses
Synthetic cannabinoids are designer drugs which have been made to mimic the effects experiences by tetra-hydro-cannabinol (THC). These substances are sprayed on herbal blends and ingested through smoking. There are many different structures of synthetic cannabinoids because the Controlled Substance Act has outlawed certain structures. A chemist can alter an already known structure by changing a minor detail creating a new legal drug. The problem with these drugs is that they cause many adverse effects and are bad for public health. In order to decrease the use of these synthetic substances the legalization of marijuana is being considered. The issue …
Compliance Of Scba Training In The Lexington Fire Department, Jordan Peter Saas
Compliance Of Scba Training In The Lexington Fire Department, Jordan Peter Saas
Online Theses and Dissertations
From 2010 through 2013, an average of 90 firefighters died in the line of duty each year (USFA, 2014). Firefighters who are off-duty continue to die as well, however, it is extremely difficult to determine whether their deaths are a result of on-duty-related exposures or not. Medical and field research has consistently found associations between smoke inhalation and acute and chronic illnesses that highlight the dangers of on-duty exposure to smoke. This study investigates the early removal of the SCBA by firefighters in one fire department while operating at fire incidents. The findings indicate that firefighters are mostly aware of …

A Retrospective Analysis Of Paramedic Student Performance Under Simulated Stress, Nicholas Franklin Miller
A Retrospective Analysis Of Paramedic Student Performance Under Simulated Stress, Nicholas Franklin Miller
Online Theses and Dissertations
The paramedic profession is an inherently difficult, dangerous and stressful profession. The paramedic is constantly barraged with acute stressors during the performance of his duties. These stressors have predictable, documented, negative effects on performance. The acute and chronic exposure to stress can negatively impact the safety and the well being of the paramedic. These stressors, if not successfully managed, can also result in negative effects to patients. Despite the overwhelming presence of stress in the paramedic environment, most paramedics receive little or no training to successfully perform under stress. One exception was a program called Trauma Lanes that was held …
