The purpose of this paper is to attempt to determine the value of using phonetics in teaching children to read. Its place in the reading program in the past and present will be discussed. In attempting to determine the value of phonetics in the reading program, information will be presented from several sources. One source will be that of researchers, writers, and educators interested in an evaluation of phonetics in the reading program. The evidence and conclusions presented by these people will be presented and discussed. Another source of information will be that of the East Richland Unit. Having had …

In the fall of 1957, the Department of Physical Education for Men at MacMurray College, believing that an intramural program should be initiated, appointed Dr. Dan Unruh as Director of Intramurals. In the fall of 1958, the writer, was named to be his assistant in the promotion of a well rounded intramural program. The experience gained in this position made the writer realize the need for a more complete method of informing the students about the intramural program.

The Extent And Nature Of Use Of Tape Recorders In The Public Schools Of The Eastern Division Of Th Illinois Education Association, Calvin L. Stockman

The tape recorder is a relatively recent addition to the many sensory teaching techniques used by the classroom teacher. Before the introduction of the magnetic tape recorder, most recordings were done on wax or plastic discs. This was followed by recording on a tiny strand of wire. Both of these systems left much to be desired in portability of equipment, fidelity of sound, and the limited recording time. The invention that placed a thin layer of iron oxide on paper tape and later plastic tape has revolutionized the kinds of equipment possible for schools and has considerably increased the uses …
