The Influence Of Situational And Transformational Leadership On Successful Crisis Management, Kenneth M. Baylor
The Influence Of Situational And Transformational Leadership On Successful Crisis Management, Kenneth M. Baylor
Journal of the North American Management Society
This qualitative study engages the narrative method and concerns the interplay of Situational and Transformational Leadership and its influence on successful crisis management. The subjects are two distinguished former World War II Fighter Squadron commanders who participated in lead roles during the invasion of Europe. It includes a review of applicable literature on the theories and a discussion of research that applies to actual crisis situations in a variety of settings. The results demonstrate that Situational and Transformational Leadership have an influence on successful crisis outcomes in terms of both preparation and response. Further, their application is equally appropriate in …
Guanxi And Ethical Decision Making, Russ Urness, Perry Hahn
Guanxi And Ethical Decision Making, Russ Urness, Perry Hahn
Journal of the North American Management Society
Guanxi or gift giving in an international business context can mean the difference between continuing a working relationship versus prematurely discontinuing the working relationship. The analysis of gift giving indicates significant economic, cultural, judicial, and ethical differences exist between the United States and China. These differences can be mitigated through the use of a commonly accepted and frequently cited ethical decision making models proposed by Trevino (1986) which take into account cognitive development, individual, and situational moderators. The expected outcome in terms of ethical behavior should be consistent with the established company protocol and at the same time honor the …
The Shifting Paradigm Of Baby Boomer Retirement Planning, David M. Savino
The Shifting Paradigm Of Baby Boomer Retirement Planning, David M. Savino
Journal of the North American Management Society
The Baby Boomer generation has done it again. As with other phases of their lives where they pioneered new lifestyles and choices, they now have succeeded in redefining retirement. While many workers before have gone the traditional route of retiring at age 62 with Social Security, Baby Boomers are forgoing the typical retirement scenario to stay on the job to satisfy both economic and workplace quality of life issues. While for years the predominant assumption was that there would be a significant labor shortage created as the Baby Boomers hit Social Security age, the opposite seems to be true. Findings …
From Micro To Meso: Overuse Of Strengths – A Framework For Assessing And Improving Organizational Effectiveness, Mary K. Foster
From Micro To Meso: Overuse Of Strengths – A Framework For Assessing And Improving Organizational Effectiveness, Mary K. Foster
Journal of the North American Management Society
This exploratory theoretical paper adapts an individual level concept from executive coaching – the overuse of strengths – to explore its potential at the organizational level as a framework for assessing and improving organizational effectiveness. This study posits a multilevel homologous relationship between overuse of strengths and performance at the individual and organizational levels. Specifically, the framework is used to explore the potential effects of overuse of strengths given a scientific management and high performance work system (HPWS) organization. This exploratory conceptualization suggests that the overuse of strengths framework and a curvilinear “amount” scale may indeed provide fruitful direction for …
Identifying Pre-Retirees For Bridge Employment: Factors That Influence Post-Retirement Employment Decisions, Sharon Kendrick, Melody L. Wollan
Identifying Pre-Retirees For Bridge Employment: Factors That Influence Post-Retirement Employment Decisions, Sharon Kendrick, Melody L. Wollan
Journal of the North American Management Society
In a field study of 387 pre-retirees, four factors are demonstrated to be important as tools to aid Human Resource Managers and managers in predicting and influencing employees to consider participation in bridge employment: education levels of pre-retirees, training opportunities offered, role support from others (of particular importance supervisors and coworkers), and work family balance issues. Additionally, our findings draw attention to the importance of employment status (part-time versus full-time) and the number of years to retirement in predicting pre-retirees’ intentions to work in bridge employment.

Franchising: A New Twist With Old Roots, Martin Luytjes
Franchising: A New Twist With Old Roots, Martin Luytjes
Journal of the North American Management Society
In the relatively short time since its post-World War II emergence, franchising has become a significant factor in the global economy, representing one of the fastest growing methods of both expanding a business (as a franchiser) and starting a business (as a franchisee). U.S. franchise revenues account for more than 40% of all retail sales and total more than a trillion dollars in revenues annually (International Franchise Association, 2004a). Within the franchise industry, the fast food segment contributes a significant portion of revenues, over $120 billion, with the trend expected to increase due to global expansion (Nation’s Restaurant News, 2006). …
Cultural Literacy And Sound Due Diligence: Two Imperatives For Business Success In China, Redmond Humphrey
Cultural Literacy And Sound Due Diligence: Two Imperatives For Business Success In China, Redmond Humphrey
Journal of the North American Management Society
Doing business in China can be very complex and costly. However, businesses can reduce their risk by being patient, and improving their cultural literacy and the quality of their due diligence. Understanding China’s culture and its ethical and legal system is a necessity for those businesses considering establishing operations in China. Partner selection has received very little attention even though it is one of the major causes of alliance failure. This paper focuses on the importance of these issues and explains why businesses should exercise due care when deciding to invest directly in China.
Strategic And Visionary Leadership: Individual Differences In Cognitive Styles For Creating Mental Images And Strategic Visions, Tobias Huning, Coy A. Jones
Strategic And Visionary Leadership: Individual Differences In Cognitive Styles For Creating Mental Images And Strategic Visions, Tobias Huning, Coy A. Jones
Journal of the North American Management Society
This paper provides a new way of thinking about visionary leadership and executive decision making. First, the literature on visionary leadership is reviewed; then a discussion of cognitive styles that draws on the psychology literature is presented. We found differences between the “visualizer” and the “verbalizer” cognitive styles. The paper proposes a research methodology to explore the effect that these cognitive styles have on established characteristics of strategic managerial decisions.
Charles E. Merrill: The Father Of Main Street Brokerage, John D. Farlin
Charles E. Merrill: The Father Of Main Street Brokerage, John D. Farlin
Journal of the North American Management Society
A millionaire by the time he was thirty-one, Charles E. Merrill more than any other individual is responsible for the innovations and concepts that allowed the average American after World War II to participate in the stock market. He was also the first prominent Wall Streeter to predict the Great Crash of 1929. By February 1929, Merrill was so convinced the market top was near that he liquidated his firm's stock portfolio. He shared this conviction with his clients. His advice allowed many Merrill Lynch customers to escape the resulting Crash of 1929. His reentry into the brokerage business in …
Service-Learning And Volunteering: Does The Course Matter?, Paul L. Govekar, Michele A. Govekar
Service-Learning And Volunteering: Does The Course Matter?, Paul L. Govekar, Michele A. Govekar
Journal of the North American Management Society
One of the greatest challenges facing third-sector organizations is attracting and retaining sufficient, qualified volunteers to develop and deliver their programs. Often, college-educated individuals are uniquely suited for this volunteer role. Many colleges and universities are using Service-Learning (S-L) as a vehicle to educate students on the importance of social and community issues. In 2006, Campus Compact member university students contributed $7.1 billion, using the Independent Sector’s annual value of $18.77 per hour, with 91% of Campus Compact member universities offering some Service-Learning courses Some nonprofit scholars argue that Service- Learning at the collegiate level will increase the extent of …

Critical Spirituality, Moral Philosophy, And Business Ethics, Michael Whitty, Jerry Biberman
Critical Spirituality, Moral Philosophy, And Business Ethics, Michael Whitty, Jerry Biberman
Journal of the North American Management Society
Critical ethics, according to David Boje, require a restoration of moral philosophy as a core value to the theory and practice of business ethics. Managerial business ethics often lack an answerability that challenges systemicity, which produces inhumane "unethics." This essay supports answerability for the administered world of organization, power and politics. We join critical post-modern theorists in rejecting "managerialism" and the cultural industry. We advocate an ethics of responsibility that is drawn from moral philosophy and a free spirituality (by which we mean a trust in human potential, consciousness and human evolution). Just as ethics is often a grey area …
Educating Business Professionals For 2010 And Beyond: Six Critical Management Themes And Skills To Emphasize, Hamid Akbari
Educating Business Professionals For 2010 And Beyond: Six Critical Management Themes And Skills To Emphasize, Hamid Akbari
Journal of the North American Management Society
In this paper, based on the recent global and technological developments, I propose six main critical themes/skills which need to be emphasized much more than before for educating business professionals in management for 2010 and beyond. While there is interdependence among these six areas, I separate them for reasons of focus and understanding.
Abusive Supervision: Observer Perceptions Of Causes And Consequences, Richard J. Sabastian, Dennis Bristow, Caity Longfield
Abusive Supervision: Observer Perceptions Of Causes And Consequences, Richard J. Sabastian, Dennis Bristow, Caity Longfield
Journal of the North American Management Society
The research examined the circumstances under which observers believe a worker would remain in a situation where abusive supervision occurs and the perceived reasons why such supervision happens. Eight different vignettes were created by independently varying the age and experience of the worker (young and inexperienced or older and experienced), the status of the boss (high or low), and the benefits and compensation the worker received (high or low). In all vignettes the male boss abusively responds to a report completed by a female worker. Undergraduate men and women business students at a Midwestern university read one of the vignettes …
Unemployment And Absenteeism Pension Effects For Low Income Workers, Ronald M. Faust
Unemployment And Absenteeism Pension Effects For Low Income Workers, Ronald M. Faust
Journal of the North American Management Society
This study investigated the effects that expected absenteeism and unemployment, based on BLS and Census data, would have on the income and thus retirement contributions made into the OAI Social Security Retirement plan, and also into a private account, by a low-income worker. Low-income-worker is defined as one earning half the average annual wages subject to FICA taxes, or $17, 449 in the year 2004. Low income workers are reported to have significantly higher absenteeism and unemployment rates than do high income workers. The conclusion is that absenteeism and unemployment have about equal impacts on Social Security Retirement benefits and …
A Long-Term Study Of Sex Differences In Attitudes Towards Women’S Roles In The Military And In Combat, Edward F. Murphy Jr., Regina A. Greenwood
A Long-Term Study Of Sex Differences In Attitudes Towards Women’S Roles In The Military And In Combat, Edward F. Murphy Jr., Regina A. Greenwood
Journal of the North American Management Society
This study explored changes in attitudes towards women’s roles in society, particularly the military, from 1993 to 2004 using the Spence, Helmreich and Stapp (1973) Attitudes towards Women scale. The researchers surveyed 500 respondents in 1993 and 2,560 between 2002 and 2004, finding that, while both women and men became more equalitarian, women became even more equalitarian. Although both men and women believe that women belong in the military, female respondents felt that women would be just as good as men in combat while men felt that women should not be in combat occupations. The study concludes that traditional stereotypes …

Capacity Building For Organizational Accomplishment: Lessons From A Network Of Nonprofit Organizations, Jacqueline Stavros, Jane Galloway Seiling, Patricia Ann Castelli
Capacity Building For Organizational Accomplishment: Lessons From A Network Of Nonprofit Organizations, Jacqueline Stavros, Jane Galloway Seiling, Patricia Ann Castelli
Journal of the North American Management Society
Organizational capacity is based upon internal relationships which exist within an organization with the goal of enhancing structure through the talents and competencies of its people. Although at times used by profit organizations as a means to strengthen company performance and assist with strategic planning, the use of capitalizing on the value of organizational capacity in nonprofits has been largely ignored. A study was undertaken to capture the essence of capacity building specifically for nonprofits. An appreciative inquiry process was utilized with favorable results toward assisting an organization to accomplish its mission of serving stakeholders effectively by building on the …
Strategic Alignment: A Model For Linking Behaviors To Strategy To Drive Organizational Success, Jim Maddox
Strategic Alignment: A Model For Linking Behaviors To Strategy To Drive Organizational Success, Jim Maddox
Journal of the North American Management Society
A model linking behavior to strategy to help drive organizational success is described. To effectively implement strategy, all areas of the organization and all employees must be aligned and linked to the strategy. This model takes the linkage one step further and links strategy to specific employee behaviors. This creates line of sight and strategic alignment. This is an important first step in beginning to identify the critical behaviors necessary to achieve the organization’s strategies. Creating this line of sight communicates to each employee what their individual role is in helping to achieve the organization’s defined strategies. This understanding is …
The Efficacy Of Accommodating Deaf And Hard-Of-Hearing Employees In The Workplace Via Note Taking, Linda M. Balsamo
The Efficacy Of Accommodating Deaf And Hard-Of-Hearing Employees In The Workplace Via Note Taking, Linda M. Balsamo
Journal of the North American Management Society
Deaf and hard-of-hearing employees often find it difficult to learn about important information, which is disseminated informally in their employing organizations. The purpose of this study was to examine information, which is impromptu or short in duration, that is transcribed by note takers. It examined the quality of the note taking both in quantity and content. The participants included 65 individuals with varying levels of contact with deaf and hard-of-hearing co-workers. Results indicated that note takers attend to verbal messages more than to textual or visual messages. Note takers tend to prioritize messages and transcribe those with a higher perceived …
The Relationship Of Quality Work Life Programs And Organizational Commitment: The Moderating Effects Of Personal Traits, Huang Tung-Chun
The Relationship Of Quality Work Life Programs And Organizational Commitment: The Moderating Effects Of Personal Traits, Huang Tung-Chun
Journal of the North American Management Society
This study aims to examine the impact of quality of work life on organizational commitment and further to explore the moderating role of personal attributes (gender, age, and education level) on the relationship between quality of work life programs and organizational commitment. Using a sample of 1229 from a leading DIY retailer in Taiwan, this study achieves some meaningful conclusions. The programs of QWL have significant and positive impact on employees’ organizational commitment. Additionally, the effects of QWL practices on organizational commitment for different groups are distinctive. For example, the dimensions of QWL such as ‘promotion and career development’, ‘job …

Bridging The Gap Between Theory And Practice: The Role Of Protocol Materials In Business Education For 2010 And Beyond, David O'Gorman
Bridging The Gap Between Theory And Practice: The Role Of Protocol Materials In Business Education For 2010 And Beyond, David O'Gorman
Journal of the North American Management Society
This paper proposes a way to significantly reduce the gap between theory and practice through the use of new technology and a thirty-year old concept called protocol materials. Protocol materials are video recordings of the real world that can be used in the classroom. Technology is evolving rapidly, and in a few years it will be possible to easily bring the real world of business into the classroom. This paper traces the origins of the protocol materials concept in the field of teacher education, and suggests the time is right for business education to adopt the Protocol Materials Process as …

Perceptions Regarding The Impact Of Workplace Attire On Workplace Outcomes, Katherine Karl, Joy V. Peluchette
Journal of the North American Management Society
The purpose of this study was to examine employee perceptions regarding the impact of workplace attire on workplace outcomes and how one is viewed by others. Results from a sample of MBA students indicate that today’s workers do see workplace attire as impacting workplace outcomes and how one is viewed by others. This is somewhat influenced by one’s gender and the value one places on attire. These results and directions for future research are discussed.

Promoting Ethical Corporate Behavior In A Global Context, Jonathon R.B. Halbesleben, M. Ronald Buckley, Michael G. Harvey, Milorad M. Novicevic
Journal of the North American Management Society
The goal of this paper is to provide executives with actionable strategies for promoting ethical corporate behavior through the recognition, understanding, and management of the social comparison process. To that end, we discuss how social comparison may influence the behavior of managers in ethical contexts and particularly how errors in social comparison (like pluralistic ignorance and false consensus) may increase the number of ethical dilemmas in organizations. We suggest that the appropriate management of social comparison could limit the occurrence of unethical behavior in organizations. We conclude with recommendations for executive actions to initiate programs that may facilitate the development …
Where Have All The Leaders Gone? A Holistic Leadership Model For These Uncertain Times, Jann E. Freed
Where Have All The Leaders Gone? A Holistic Leadership Model For These Uncertain Times, Jann E. Freed
Journal of the North American Management Society
After seeking the wisdom of “sages” about what is needed to be a leader in the changing economy, the themes that emerged were developed into a holistic model that builds on creating an environment where people want to work. It is a process model that emphasizes attributes important for making a living and making a life in these uncertain times.
Pointing The Finger At Leadership, Richard A. Barker
Pointing The Finger At Leadership, Richard A. Barker
Journal of the North American Management Society
The word leadership is often used incorrectly to refer to management, supervision, command, and statesmanship. Scholars rarely, if ever, make any distinction among these four different constructs. Most theories of leadership are really theories of supervision, and the words leadership and supervision are used interchangeably. This paper attempts to distinguish between the two.
