A Conceptual Model On The Relationship Between Human Resource Strategy And Turnover, Lee L. Hisey, Jude Bumgardner Mar 2023

A Conceptual Model On The Relationship Between Human Resource Strategy And Turnover, Lee L. Hisey, Jude Bumgardner

Journal of the North American Management Society

This paper proposes a conceptual model, explaining the effects of certain reactive or proactive human resource management strategies on an organization’s ability to acquire resources. The purpose of this model is to demonstrate how, in response to dysfunctional turnover, reactive human resource strategies moderate an organization’s ability to acquire resources, while proactive human resource strategies mediate the organization’s ability to acquire resources. The model proposes a moderating effect due to the ineffective strategies of an organization, such as increasing employee work effort in order to compensate for dysfunctional turnover. On the other hand, the model proposes that implementing proactive strategies, …

Faculty Perceptions On Professional And Student Development In Performance Evaluations, Gyongyi Konyu-Fogel, Valerie Wallingford, Carolyn Wiley, Ann Saurbier

Journal of the North American Management Society

In many higher educational institutions, one of the faculty requirements is to engage in continuous professional development. Faculty expectations may also include various student development activities. However, the impact of faculty and student development has not been emphasized in previous research, even though it has been noted to contribute to enhancing academic learning and performance. This study examines the perceptions of faculty at several Midwestern higher educational institutions by collecting data through surveys on the importance of faculty and student development in faculty evaluation decisions. The findings are used to make recommendations for administrators, faculty, and future research related to …

The Power Dynamics That Facilitate Or Inhibit Organizational Success, Mary Kovach Mar 2023

The Power Dynamics That Facilitate Or Inhibit Organizational Success, Mary Kovach

Journal of the North American Management Society

The purpose of this manuscript is to identify and define some the key power dynamics often facilitating or inhibiting organizational success. It is composed of qualitative and experiential research based on fifteen years of corporate business experience and graduate-level coursework. It is a conceptual paper based on one person’s experience; therefore, the leading limitation is generalizability, but is overcome by research based on references. Analysis demonstrates that of the five power dynamics, coercive power is inherently the most detrimental to an organization. While some of the five recognized power dynamics require positional power, two can be exemplified at any level …

It’S Time For Baby Boomer Small Business Owners To Retire: Or Is It?, Debra Mitchell, Kent Rhodes Mar 2023

It’S Time For Baby Boomer Small Business Owners To Retire: Or Is It?, Debra Mitchell, Kent Rhodes

Journal of the North American Management Society

This paper describes baby boomer small business owner succession as it relates to retirement from the perspective of the baby boomer business owner and society. Small businesses are key contributors to the U.S. economy and workforce. As society anticipates the retirement of the single largest part of the U.S. population, the “boomers,” many small business owners of that generation have, themselves, anticipated retirement. However, few business owners have prepared for retirement with a succession plan. Even in their 60s, many small business owners are delaying their retirement. This paper challenges conventional retirement norms and addresses the phenomenon of retirement through …

The Characteristics Of Corporate Board Of Directors: Are There Significant Trends Between Women And Men Over The Years?, Carolyn Wiley, Deborah D. Pavelka, Undine Stinnette

Journal of the North American Management Society

Corporate boards of directors provide a framework for successfully managing an organization. Memberships on corporate boards of directors are predominated by men. Worldwide, women face significant challenges in gaining access to the boardroom and leadership of prestigious committees on the board. While a significant amount of research has been carried out on the traits of senior managers, little has been done on the board of directors. The main question to be considered in our research pertains to the characteristics of women and men on corporate boards (WOCBs and MOCBs). These characteristics will be discussed along with implications and recommendations for …

Chs Country Operations’ International Business Strategy, Robert A. Lloyd

Journal of the North American Management Society

In 2012, U.S.-based CHS Country Operations executed their first steps in an international business strategy with the acquisition of Canadian agriculture retail company, DynAgra. In 2014 they purchased more retail locations from CPS and Viterra, and in the time since these international acquisitions, management at CHS has worked to bring the company’s core values and business culture to their new employees, customers, and market. Through a qualitative analysis of the company through interviews with key stakeholders in the acquisition and operation of the Canadian assets, a case study is formed to better understand the overall international business strategy of CHS …

Paradigm Shift In Human Resource Management: From Contingency Model To Strategy And Process Development, Gyongyi Konyu-Fogel Mar 2023

Paradigm Shift In Human Resource Management: From Contingency Model To Strategy And Process Development, Gyongyi Konyu-Fogel

Journal of the North American Management Society

Traditionally, human resource management has not been involved in strategic management. However, to be successful in today’s competitive global marketplace, organizations need human resource professionals with competencies in strategic thinking, system’s view, and team-building skills to create organizational environments that have capacity for learning, innovation, responsiveness, flexibility, and on-going value creation. This paradigm shift requires human resource professionals to find a "fit" between organizational strategy and structure, identifying value-adding processes and developing core competencies through people. This paper discusses some of the methods and practices that could move human resource management from a support function to a value-added activity based …

In Pursuit Of Crisis Readiness: An Examination Of Managerial Characteristics, Firm Size, Industry Domain And Strategic Type Within The Miles And Snow Framework, John A. Parnell, William "Rick" Crandall, Richard E. Crandall

Journal of the North American Management Society

A crisis refers to an unpredictable event that can seriously threaten an organization. Crisis readiness is an integral part of the crisis management process and refers to the level of preparedness an organization possesses in response to a potential catastrophic event. Findings from a survey of 275 managers in the United States revealed that top managers with production/engineering and general management backgrounds reported higher degrees of crisis readiness capabilities than did their counterparts with other backgrounds. Likewise, higher levels of crisis readiness were reported in larger, manufacturing organizations than in smaller, service organizations.

Journal of the North American Management Society

Using the lens of social exchange theory, this study examines the role of organization change, perceptions of politics (POPS) and interpersonal conflict at work (ICAW) on the LMX/job satisfaction relationship. Results indicate that organization change, POPS and ICAW each have a partial negative mediation effect on the LMX/job satisfaction relationship. Implications for management are briefly discussed.

The Impact Of Media Choice And Social Capital On Quality Improvement, Baiyun Gong, David S. Hoyte, Regina A. Greenwood Mar 2023

The Impact Of Media Choice And Social Capital On Quality Improvement, Baiyun Gong, David S. Hoyte, Regina A. Greenwood

Journal of the North American Management Society

In this paper, we analyze the differences between product and process quality improvement and suggest that the effectiveness of each type of quality improvement is facilitated by distinctive organizational contexts. Specifically, the level of organizational social capital and the richness of communication media are significant determinants of a successful quality improvement approach. Moreover, certain combinations of social capital and media may best fit with either product or process quality improvement. We discuss the possibility of constructing an organizational context that facilitates both types of quality improvement and call for future research to investigate this issue.

The project presented within offers a proposed experiential learning opportunity for students enrolled in this (or similar) course. Project learning objectives and specifications are presented. Teaching Notes are also provided.

The Fallacy Of Leadership Transparency, Jay Johnson, Jim Maddox Mar 2023

The Fallacy Of Leadership Transparency, Jay Johnson, Jim Maddox

Journal of the North American Management Society

The word “transparency” has become a staple of current organizational speak and a popular concept for leaders to incorporate into their leadership persona. They attempt to create the perception that information and the rationale for decisions will be clear and openly communicated. The purpose of this paper is to explore the apparent fallacy of leadership transparency. That is, that often times, the more the word transparency is used by leaders in an organization, the less actual transparency there is. The paper explores the allure of Leadership transparency and offers reasons why the fallacy occurs. In this context, the role of …

Supply And Demand Considerations For The U.S. Health Care Workforce: What May The Future Hold?, Michaeline Skiba, David P. Paul Iii

Journal of the North American Management Society

Five factors that influence supply and demand within the health care workforce are demographics, education, the healthcare delivery system, the economy, and context. These factors are interdependent and powerfully influence stakeholders involved in health care administration. All of them are in constant flux and heavily rely on the economy and context – two of the five factors that gained prominence since the Great Recession and determine strategy and policy related to future employment in all professional sectors. This paper reviews these factors from the vantage points of selected health care professions, and examines the opportunities and threats that lie ahead.

Executive Compensation In Higher Education: Effects Of Institutional Characteristics And Performance On Presidents’ Compensation, Michael E. Dobbs, Elizabeth M. Schwindenhammer Mar 2023

Executive Compensation In Higher Education: Effects Of Institutional Characteristics And Performance On Presidents’ Compensation, Michael E. Dobbs, Elizabeth M. Schwindenhammer

Journal of the North American Management Society

While CEO compensation has been widely explored (Huang, 2010), there is also debate about whether university presidents are equitably paid given university budget cuts and rising tuition rates (Ehrenberg, Cheslock, and Epifantseva, 2001; Cotton, 2012). We explore possible determinants of compensation for university presidents of 419 private and 160 public universities. We hypothesize about the effects of enrollment, endowment, and employee size; graduation and retention rates; and other institutional factors on presidents’ compensation and use regression analysis to test these hypotheses. We find strong support for a positive effect of enrollment on university presidents’ pay levels, but this effect is …

The Use And Usefulness Of Social-Network-Site Recruiting, Allison Tharp, David Boggs Mar 2023

The Use And Usefulness Of Social-Network-Site Recruiting, Allison Tharp, David Boggs

Journal of the North American Management Society

Human resources recruiters use many different methods to identify and attract desirable applicants to their organizations. The use of online social networks, such as LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter, for recruiting purposes is one of the newer methods that organizations are using. This paper argues that employees recruited through online social networks are less likely to turnover than average; also, it argues that social networking sites (SNS) decrease the selection cycle time when hiring and are an effective means to recruit passive job candidates. Social recruiting produces the benefits identified by merging the speed of the Internet with the quality and …

Performance Evaluation And Promotion Criteria: Perceptions Of Faculty Evaluation In Promotion Decisions, Valerie Wallingford, Gyongyi Konyu-Fogel`, Mary B. Dubois

Journal of the North American Management Society

Performance evaluation and promotion of faculty can be difficult in higher education. The evaluation of faculty performance often creates confusion as the criteria for promotion are often poorly understood. Disagreements over effective, equitable performance evaluation tools and possible biases of how faculty may get promoted have been a concern in many institutions, possibly creating legal liabilities that underlines the need for designing promotion criteria that are effective and easily understood by administrators and faculty. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the perceptions of faculty promotion practices and processes used in higher education institutions in the Midwest region of …

Managing Risky Behavior: How Organizations Manage Workplace Violence, Carolyn Wiley Mar 2023

Managing Risky Behavior: How Organizations Manage Workplace Violence, Carolyn Wiley

Journal of the North American Management Society

OSHA defines workplace violence as any act or threat of physical violence, harassment, intimidation or other threatening and disruptive behavior that occurs at a worksite. Such violence costs American businesses approximately $36 billion a year. This is not expected to decrease unless organizational leaders begin to understand and to establish preventive measures. Management of violence in the work environment has to be a priority. The nature of the workplace and of working conditions is rapidly changing. Contemporary work environments are characterized by more stressful contexts with information and knowledge-based work and more stressful outcomes such as downsizing and organizational restructuring …

Web-Based Accountability: An Integration Of Extant Knowledge, Research Gaps And Future Directions, Brandi N. Guidry Hollier, Lise Anne D. Slatten

Journal of the North American Management Society

Because Internet-based technologies are readily used by businesses, research scholars have begun to focus on the specific use of such technology by nonprofit organizations for accountability purposes. A central focus of this paper is to review some of the most significant extant literature on web-based accountability, with particular emphasis on conceptual and empirical studies focusing on the nonprofit sector. Much of this research is situated within the public relations literature, as some of the primary elements of online accountability are directly related to establishing relationships and disclosing information to stakeholders. Finally, this paper presents research gaps and future research propositions …

Service-Learning As A Practical Approach To Teaching Auditing, Andrew G. Bashore, Matthew A. Phillips

Journal of the North American Management Society

Business pedagogy can be more effective for students and business through a hands-on, practical approach rather than traditional lectures. The Pathways Commission of the AICPA and AAA recommended we “develop curriculum models, engaging learning resources, and mechanisms for easily sharing them as well as enhancing faculty development opportunities in support of sustaining a robust curriculum” (American Accounting Association 2012 p. 12; Hawawini 2005). In this article, we present a method to teach auditing. We identify a few articles integrating service-learning opportunities into a business school environment (Tonge and Willett 2012; Govekar and Rishi 2007). Our student teams performed agreed-upon procedures …

The results indicate that the externally ranked schools had a higher number of statements highlighting the welfare of their workforce in their strategic documents, thus affirming the importance of employees.

The Relationship Of Organizational Justice And Interpersonal Attraction In Survivors’ Acceptance Of Co-Worker Terminations, Charles S. White, Richard S. Allen, Randy Evans Mar 2023

The Relationship Of Organizational Justice And Interpersonal Attraction In Survivors’ Acceptance Of Co-Worker Terminations, Charles S. White, Richard S. Allen, Randy Evans

Journal of the North American Management Society

The main purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of organizational justice and interpersonal attraction in survivors’ acceptance of co-worker terminations. Four scenarios were tested manipulating high and low levels of the two independent variables (organizational justice and interpersonal attraction) and their effects on the dependent variable (level of acceptance of coworker terminations). Findings indicate justice during the termination process is more important than how much the coworker was liked on the survivors’ acceptance of coworker terminations. The practical implication is that organizations must be careful to insure that terminations are done in a just manner in order …

Assessing Trio/Student Support Services Leadership, Institutional Structure, And Student Six-Year Graduation Relationships, Valerie Wallingford

Journal of the North American Management Society

The U.S. Department of Education allocates over $300,000,000 annually to TRIO Student Support Services projects. However, little research has been conducted regarding specific factors that lead to project success. This study investigated whether there was higher six-year student graduation rates when TRIO/SSS directors possessed transformational leadership characteristics and when the TRIO/SSS projects were more integrated into the hosts’ institutional structures. To examine these correlations, 209 TRIO/SSS directors in the upper mid-west were asked to complete the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire and a researcher-developed survey regarding each project’s six-year graduation rates and the degree of project integration within their institutional structure. The …

Content analysis of 114 respondents revealed 13 themes: those actively considering medical tourism, the perceived benefits, nature of procedures, follow-up care, quality of care, cost, safety, insurance, facilities, family support, language barriers, U.S. government policy crisis, and a final category of those who would never consider medical tourism under any circumstances. Implications for HR management of employee health plans and marketing in the hospitality industry are discussed.

Using Personality To Identify High Technology Career Preference In Military Recruits, Heather H. Jia, Davide E. Fleming Mar 2023

Using Personality To Identify High Technology Career Preference In Military Recruits, Heather H. Jia, Davide E. Fleming

Journal of the North American Management Society

Given increasing budget constraints, it is vital that employers get the most bang for their buck in recruiting efforts and that they result in hiring employees that possess the necessary skills. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the United States military which faces cutbacks while still needing to recruit soldiers who possess the skills needed to operate the modern military. This paper develops a set of propositions aimed at guiding empirical research into how military recruiters can use currently administered personality tests to ensure that they are enlisting the recruits needed to perform high technology occupations now needed.
