Studies On Muropeptide Amino Acids Of Rhizobium Japonicum, Mohammed Alauddin

The isolation of Rhizobium japonicum cell walls was performed by ultrasonication and the enzymatic digestion with DNase, RNase and pronase separately. Crude cell walls were washed with M NaCl and 5% SDS and were isolated by 20,000 g centrifugation. Muropeptide amino acids were freed by hydrolysis at 121C for 10 minutes in 6N HCl.

Detection of Rhizobium japonicum murein layer amino acids was done by 2-dimensional instant thin layer chromatography on silica gel plates. The solvents found most favorable, were n-butanol: acetic acid: water and n-propanol: 34% ammonium hydroxide. Amino acid spots were developed by spraying ninhydrin on the chromatograms, …

A Survey Of Ectoparasites From Microtus Ochrogaster Ochrogaster (Wagner), Peromyscus Leucopus Noveboracensis (Fisher), And Cryptotis Parva Harlani (Say), Fred Basolo Jr.

Ectoparasites were taken from 50 white footed deer mice, Peromyscus leucopus noveboracensis (Fisher), 50 prairie voles, Microtus ochrogaster ochrogaster (Wagner), and 11 least shrews, Cryptotis parva harlani (Say), within a five mile radius of Charleston, Illinois from 23 January 1973 through 25 June 1973. A total number of 4,242 ectoparasites were recovered; 2,395 from Microtus ochrogaster, 542 from Peromyscus leucopus, and 1,305 from Cryptotis parva. The major groups of ectoparasites and their percent recovery were: Acari (excl. of Metastigmata) 81.50%, Metastigmata 2.95%, Anoplura 15.50% and Siphonaptera 0.50%. Gastro-Intestinal And Abdominal Helminths Of White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus) From Carroll And Jo Daviess Counties In Northern Illinois, Jeffrey Joseph Hodge

Forty-four white-tailed deer shot by hunters in November and December, 1971, in Carroll and Jo Daviess counties in northwestern Illinois were necropsied for gastro-intestinal and abdominal helminths. Five species of gastro-intestinal nematodes were found: Gongylonema pulchrum, Ostertagia odocoilei, Haemonchus contortus, Trichuris ovis and Nematodirus sp. Setaria yehi, a filiariad nematode, was found in the abdominal cavity. Moniezia benedeni was the only cestode found. No trematodes were recovered. Differences in numbers and kinds of parasites found in northern Illinois and southern Illinois are discussed. Prevalence increased with host age for certain species of parasites and decreased or …

The diurnal rhythm of adrenal ascorbic acid (DAR) displays an inverse relationship to the diurnal rhythm of circulating levels of plasma corticosteroids. Alloxan monohydrate, 175 mg/kg body weight was given subcutaneously to albino rats to determine the effect of the diabetic state on the DAR. A total of 200 female albino rats were divided into two study groups. Study Group I was composed of 150 animals divided into populations of 15, each including 3 controls. The purpose of the study was to determine through electromyography whether a non-pathological fault, such as lateral asymmetry at the pelvic level, would hinder, in significant manner, efficient functioning of the body.

A review of the literature revealed that although previous experiments had been conducted to determine the effects certain postural deviations had on the normal, efficient functioning of the body and that previous experiments had been conducted to determine which muscles performed which task as related to walking, none dealt with the specific effects of lateral deviations at the pelvic level on the upper leg muscles used in walking. …

The Personality Of Psychology Majors As Measured By The Mmpi, Bill W. Garmon

This study sought to investigate the personality traits of psychology students. No significant differences were found between a group of psychology majors and a control group on any of the scales of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory.

The findings do show that college students, as a group, are more deviant in their responses on the MMPI than the general adult population.

The subjects were 80 students enrolled in seven psychology classes at Eastern Illinois University.

The t ratio was used for evaluating the difference between means for each scale.

On January 1, 1973, 10 soil samples were collected from areas in Coles County, Illinois, in an effort to isolate soil amoebae. All 10 soil samples were cultured on bacto-nutrient agar and colonies of amoebae genera isolated were Acanthamoeba and Hartmannella. Amoebabacteria cultures prepared from soil isolates were injected into each of 10 adult mice which were sacrificed at the end of the nine days and examined for evidence of infection and pathogenicity. Lesions were observed in two mice and amoebae cysts and bacterial colonies were present in nine mice. Amoeba-bacteria cultures were purified using streptomycin antibiotic discs and …

Fluorescence in certain land snails has been found to arise from a bacteria carried by the snails. The bacteria, a genus of Pseudomonas, produce a pigment complex in iron-deficient media. The pigment complex consists of both fluorescent and non-fluorescent pigments. One of the fluorescent compounds was isolated and purified by paper chromatography using several different solvent systems.

Absorption and fluorescent spectra of the compound at a number of pH values were measured and the changes with pH of both the intensity and the color of the fluorescence were observed. The purified compound was ninhydrin negative but after acid hydrolysis …

The field for research on women offenders provides an extensive opportunity for scientific investigation. Many writers (Gibbons, 1971; Cunningham, 1964; Sutherland, 1968) have discussed the causes of crime and their resulting social implications. Organized mass presentations of the movement of crime among women is negligible. Today female incarcerates make up approximately 11 per cent (Lerner, 1972) of the total number in state and federal penitentiaries. Previous research (Cunningham, 1964) on female felons found poor self-concept, excessive dependency and pathological emotionality to be a consistent pattern in women criminals. Other research (Apfeldorf, 1971; Guze, 1959) found criminal and non-criminal groups could …

The purpose of this study was to try to determine whether or not the way that a homosexual recalled his parent child relationships might be a function of the population from which he was drawn.

The primary hypothesis of this paper was that attitudes would not differ significantly between homosexual and heterosexual groups. A secondary hypothesis was that attitudes would not differ significantly between groups in each area covered; therapy, social action, and non-social action.

Sixty male homosexuals and 60 male heterosexuals volunteered to participate in this study.

The major purpose of this study was to explore personality differences between American and Chinese college students.

Sixteen American college students and two groups of the same number of their Chinese counterparts, one of the Chinese student groups being in the United States for less than one year and the other group being in the United States for longer than two years, were randomly selected and matched by ages to be the subjects of this study.

Parasites From Gizzard Shad, Dorosoma Cepedianum, In Lake Charleston, Illinois, Francis M. Yabai Kaikumba

Eighty gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum) from Lake Charleston, Charleston, Illinois were examined for parasites. Eight fish were parasitized. Three fish contained the acanthocephalan Tanaorhamphus longirostris, three fish harbored cestodes of the genus Glaridacris and two fish had the nematode Camallanus oxycephalus. The latter is here reported for the first time from gizzard shad. Twenty fish were infected with the fungus Saprolegnia sp. The numbers of helminth parasites harbored by shad are less than reported for other forage fish. However, the incident of parasitism reported in this study is greater than that reported by previous workers.
