History of EIU

Eastern Illinois University has undergone a vast transformation

during its first 75 years. Beginning in one building on a

40-acre campus valued at $227,000, it grew to a campus of 316

acres with 35 modern buildings valued at some $61,000,000.

Eastern started as an institution whose main purpose was to train

teachers for the schools of East Central Illinois, but in three

quarters of a century it grew into a full fledged university composed

of one college, and seven schools, including a strong

Pesticide Effects In A Simulated Soil Ecosystem, Raymond J. Samp

The screening of pesticides to determine which were most inhibitory to bacteria was accomplished by testing the effects of 10 pesticides on 9 different organisms using the disk assay method. Results showed that Gram positive bacteria were more sensitive to all pesticides tested than were the Gram negative bacteria. In addition, the hormone herbicides were found to be the most inhibitory to these bacteria and 2,4-D (2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid), a hormone herbicide, was chosen for subsequent in vivo studies.

The Water Quality And Benthic Macroinvertebrate Fauna Of Lake Charleston, Coles County, Illinois, Paul Barding

The benthic macroinvertebrate fauna and 15 water quality parameters for five sites on Lake Charleston, Coles County, Illinois were examined for 26 weeks from March 14 through September 5, 1974. None of the water quality parameters studied showed sufficient deviations at any particular area on the lake to merit demarcated water quality zonation. The lake, with its continuous mixing and shallow depth, represented a fairly stable and continuous environment. The benthic macroinvertebrate fauna was determined as fairly diverse and some indication of seasonal variation was apparent. Conodonts Of The Mecca Quarry Shale, Timothy Charles O'Neill

Conodonts were found to be abundant in the Middle Pennsylvanian, Mecca Quarry Shale, Parke County, Indiana. Nine forms were identified in this black fissile shale from a locality along Montgomery Creek near the town of Mecca. These elements are: Hindeodella parva, Idiognathodus delacatus, Gondolella sp. a, Ozarkodina delacatula, Lonchodina clarki, Ligonodina typa, Lonchodus simplex, Metalonchodina bidentata, and Neoprioniodus conjunctus.

Ratios of elements to each other were determined and used to arrive at an idea of what conodont assemblages were present. At least three asemblages are presented; Scottognathus, Duboisella, and Illinella …

Determination Of The Ld-50 Level For 2,4-D On Wild Type Culex Pipiens Mosquito Larvae In Illinois, William H. Ettinger

The LD-50 levels for 2,4-D and Ronnel were determined and compared on the larvae of Culex pipiens Linneaus mosquitoes. The World Health Organization technique for the 24 hour bioassay was employed. Ronnel served as an indicator of susceptibility to pesticides and it was found that 2,4-D is toxic to mosquito larvae with an LD-50 level of 1.95 p.p.m. It was also found that a concentration of 20 p.p.m. ethanol or greater causes lethality in the larvae.
