Eastern Illinois University was established in 1899, and from its beginning recognized the importance of the botanical sciences. Two terms of botany were required for the four year program. Otis W. Caldwell, a botanist, was one of the original faculty members. He taught all of the biology courses and initiated the acquisition of a greenhouse. Caldwell was the first of a series of talented and dedicated botany professors including Edgar N. Transeau, Ernest L. Stover, Hiram F. Thut and John E. Ebinger. These and many other professors incorporated a field component into almost all classes. This dedication to the study …

Respiratory Effects Of 1-Propylxanthine On Neonatal Rats, Amanda Hance

Student Honors Theses

Neonatal apnea is commonly treated by methylxanthines like caffeine or theophylline, but these drugs have the potential to create serious side effects. As an alternative, a new xanthine analog, 1-propylxanthine (1-PX), was recently synthesized at Eastern Illinois University. The respiratory effects of 1-PX were investigated in 4- to 7-day-old rats to determine if 1-PX could be a respiratory stimulant. Each rat was placed in a heated body plethysmograph, and its respiratory rate and volume were measured using a flow transducer, pneumotachograph, and Power Lab data acquisition system. As energy prices rise and there is a push for energy to be produced from renewable resources, the contribution of Indiana’s corn and soybean industry often overshadows the impact that the State’s wood residues can have in response to these demands. Reports show that the wood products industry is the largest, by paid wages, of any agricultural industry in Indiana and employs 47,000 Indianans.1 In fact, Indiana has more than 4.5 million acres of forest land,2 compared to about 12.3 million acres of cropland.3 In addition to the millions of acres of forestland, Indiana has more than 1,600 wood products …

Edge Influence On Reproductive Success Of Symphoricarpos Orbiculatus, Breanne M. Nott

With continued forest fragmentation, edge effects play an important role in shaping the structure and composition of plant communities. Some forest plant species exhibit increased abundance at forest edges, while other species have a negative edge response. Despite welldocumented edge effects, there are few studies that document the underlying effects on population dynamics of individual species that result in edge responses. Two mechanisms may generate differential distribution of a species across an edge. Edges may 1) alter population demographics by influencing the plant’s uptake and allocation of resources, or may 2) influence the spatial pattern of seed dispersal. Coral berry …

Graduate Alumnus

Since 1951 Eastern has offered advanced study

with master’s programming. Since that first

offering thousands of students have earned

graduate degrees, and EIU graduate alumni

have changed the world we live in. In 2005

EIU celebrated more than 50 years of graduate

education by honoring 50 graduate alumni

as Outstanding Graduate Alumni. That same

year the Graduate Alumni Advisory Board was

created and met for the first time. Since those

initial 50 honorees, the Graduate Alumni

Advisory Board, the Graduate School, and EIU’s

graduate programs have continued to honor

the achievements and accomplishments of our

graduate alumni every year.

Historia Vol. 17, Eastern Illinois University Department Of History

Historia

Historia is a joint publication of Eastern Illinois University's History Department and the Epsilon Mu Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta. Edited entirely by EIU students, Historia is designed to offer undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to publish their work. Students who wish to work as Historia editors must enroll in HIS 4900 (Historical Publishing), which is offered each spring. Students who wish to submit articles or reviews for consideration are welcome to do so at any time.

Historia earned third place in Phi Alpha Theta's Gerald D. Nash History Journal Prize competition in Division I in 2011.
