Returns To Education In Rural America, Dilyara Jepbarova
Returns To Education In Rural America, Dilyara Jepbarova
Masters Theses
Rural areas are less developed than urban. It is well known that rural workers are more likely to suffer from the lower wages than their counterparts from metro areas. Policymakers wrestle with the issue of "brain drain" in rural areas and, therefore, a loss of tax income in rural counties. "Brain drain" happens when professionals leave rural counties for metropolitans to earn higher returns to education. This thesis will shed light on some sides of rural development connected with the returns to education.
The main goal of this research is to estimate and compare wages and returns to education in …
An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Athletic Identity And Academic Success Among Intercollegiate Athletes, Kimberly A. Garkie
An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Athletic Identity And Academic Success Among Intercollegiate Athletes, Kimberly A. Garkie
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine if a relationship existed between athletic identity and academic success at a small, NCAA Division I institution. Two hundred and twenty-eight student-athletes (143 men, 85 women), representing 15 intercollegiate sports at Eastern Illinois University, completed the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale (AIMS; Brewer, Van Raalte, & Linder, 1993) and these responses were correlated with the student athlete's Grade Point Averages. Results indicated that no statistically significant relationship was found between athletic identity scores and self-reported Grade Point Average (GPA). Limitations of the current study, as well as a need for future research regarding …

"The Lower Class Of Traitors Have Also Their Architects Of Plots": The London Irish, The United Irish, And The Creation Of Irish Identities, 1780-1800, Erin K. Crawley
"The Lower Class Of Traitors Have Also Their Architects Of Plots": The London Irish, The United Irish, And The Creation Of Irish Identities, 1780-1800, Erin K. Crawley
Masters Theses
This thesis explores the concepts of prejudice and contrasting identities in 1790s London, examining the interplay between English authorities, the United Irish, and the working Irish in London. The thesis examines the agency of the London Irish and the limits to their actions caused by the United Irish presence in London and the English response. First, it analyzes court cases, sessions papers, pamphlets, and trial publications to show where prosecutors, defendants, and witnesses make linguistic ascriptions of Irish, English, and metropolitan identity. This analysis shows that the working-class London Irish were primarily unskilled laborers, beggars, and disembarked soldiers living in …
Taking Out The Trash: Critiquing The Equipment For Living Of White Trash Films, Tasha Rose Dunn
Taking Out The Trash: Critiquing The Equipment For Living Of White Trash Films, Tasha Rose Dunn
Masters Theses
Over the past decade, class has become a lightning rod issue in the United States as the gap between the rich and the poor continues to widen. One of the main reasons for growing class segregation is the mere fact that U.S. culture carries enormous social anxieties about poverty and, in turn, blame the poor for being poor. As a result of hegemonic beliefs about class, crude discourses are formed and fostered through the mainstream media creating both inaccurate and damaging portrayals. Such damaging portrayals are immediately evident in a variety of mainstream Hollywood films produced in the past decade …
Factors Influencing The Academic Major Selection Of Undecided Students: A Phenomenological Study, Christina D. Thompson
Factors Influencing The Academic Major Selection Of Undecided Students: A Phenomenological Study, Christina D. Thompson
Masters Theses
This phenomenological, qualitative research study was designed to determine the most commonly selected academic major chosen by previously undecided students, the various factors that influenced the academic-major decision, and the similarities between the study participants. By comparing a Fall 2006 spreadsheet of undecided freshmen enrolled at Eastern Illinois University to a Fall 2008 spreadsheet of Eastern Illinois University students, the major choice of these previously undecided students was Communication Studies, determined to be the most highly selected academic major. Previously undecided students who had chosen Communication Studies were recruited for participation in this research. Data was collected through a demographic …
Natural Resources, Investment, And Growth In Low Income Countries, Dena L. Reavis
Natural Resources, Investment, And Growth In Low Income Countries, Dena L. Reavis
Masters Theses
Rents generated by natural resource endowments can be lucrative and highly productive sources of revenue for countries of all income levels. Countries able to develop sound investment strategies that efficiently allocate resource rents into highly productive activities can set themselves on paths of long-run stable growth. This study estimates the effects of several host-country characteristics on inflows of foreign direct investment and per capita incomes for low income countries finding that investments in human capital do attract inward foreign direct investment. Some evidence supports the hypothesis of a natural resource curse when the abundant resource is agriculture or food.
Ethnic Lesbian Identity Development: A Focus On African American And Latino Women, Alexandria Quinones
Ethnic Lesbian Identity Development: A Focus On African American And Latino Women, Alexandria Quinones
Masters Theses
The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate if there were differences in the developmental progression of a lesbian identity for ethnic women, specifically African American and Latino women, from that of majority lesbian women. Selected societal, familial and personal beliefs were examined to discover their influences on the women's development of a lesbian identity. Responses from ten women indicated there was a variation during their progression towards a lesbian identity in relation to the previous stage models based on majority homosexual individuals. Future recommendations for practitioners and researchers included considering environmental influences for expanding research models examining lesbian …
