Belonging In Unashamed Authenticity, Nathan R. Kitchen Oct 2023

Belonging In Unashamed Authenticity, Nathan R. Kitchen

Together We RISE (Making Excellence Inclusive)

In 2020, the UCLA School of Law’s Williams Institute reported that 47% of LGBTQ adults were moderately or highly religious. This equates to 5.3 million religious LGBTQ adults in America. We cannot ignore this population.

When making the transition into young adulthood, many religious LGBTQ youth feel they must make a choice between their spiritual well-being or their queerness. As a university community interested in the success of the rising generation, we can provide support for religious queer young adults through understanding:

1. What is happening in this transition and why,

2. The well-being needs of religious queer young adults …

Developing Horizontal Expertise With Professional Learning Communities In Social Studies Teacher Preparation, Charles Tocci, Ann Marie Ryan Jun 2023

Developing Horizontal Expertise With Professional Learning Communities In Social Studies Teacher Preparation, Charles Tocci, Ann Marie Ryan

The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies

As teacher education programs become increasingly organized around accreditation and licensure standards, finding opportunities to be responsive to teacher candidates' needs and interests has become more difficult. This paper traces the evolution of a professional learning community for secondary social studies teacher candidates as a key feature of one teacher education program and analyzes the collaborative projects designed for the purpose of developing horizontal expertise. We find that professional learning communities can serve as dynamic spaces to co-construct learning experiences with candidates in ways that prepare them for future professional learning as practicing social studies teachers.

Creating Law And Order: A Content-Centered Manifest Destiny Activity, Presley Shilling, Jeffrey Byford, Alisha Milam

The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies

This content activity shows how Robert Stahl’s negotiation activity approach can promote decision-making in the social studies classroom. The effects of the activity on students’ ability to replicate the actions of settlers taking the journey to the western territories in search of gold. Incorporating Robert Stahl’s four decision-making phases, students negotiate social, political, and economic issues associated with the mining town of Bodie, California. In doing so, students must, individually or in small groups, decide and prioritize a series of proposals to better the living conditions, economic struggles, and social problems that have plagued Bodie for some time.

Undergraduate, 1st Place: Otolaryngologist And Speech-Language Pathologist (Slp) Collaboration In Head And Neck Cancer, Abigail Moore

2023 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creative Activity - Documents

Head and neck cancer (HNC) is an aggressive, complex diagnosis that accounts for approximately five percent of all cancers diagnosed in the United States (Kawashita et al., 2020;National Cancer Institute, n.d. A). There are various types of HNC and several tumor sites inwhich HNC can potentially occur. Because routine screening for HNC does not exist, it is difficult to diagnose and often found at advanced stages (National Cancer Institute, n.d. A).

Graduate, 1st Place: World War I War Front And Home Front: The Correspondence That Brought Them Together, Michelle Thole

2023 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creative Activity - Documents

The First World War was the first time American soldiers had participated in a war at a distance from home that did not easily facilitate home furloughs. Although the United States and Europe are physically separated by more than 3,500 miles, the relative distance between American World War I soldiers on the war front and their families on the home front was minor; the correspondence between them mitigated the physical and cognitive distance.

Historians of the First World War have explored soldiers’ contact with their families while in training camps and the US military’s intentional cultivation of a balance between …

The Strategic Application Of Alternative Grading To Improve Retention And Enhance Equity (Spring 2023), Teshome Abebe, Michael Gillespie

EIU Think Tank Reports and White Papers

Universities across the United States have been using the Pass/Fail grading system for a variety of reasons and in many different ways. There are so many uses of the system as there are universities.

In general, universities have used the Pass/Fail grading system to: help reduce stress and pressure on students; provide more flexibility in course selection and encourage students to explore and pursue interest without fear of damaging their GPA; reduce perceived discrimination and bias in grading, providing more equitable opportunities for all students regardless of race, socioeconomic status or prior academic background; and to improve retention rates by …

Stress And Employee Engagement, Kumar Subramaniam, Steve Roussas Mar 2023

Stress And Employee Engagement, Kumar Subramaniam, Steve Roussas

Journal of the North American Management Society

We explored strategies that HR leaders within a single healthcare organization in Franklin, Tennessee, used to reduce employee disengagement caused by stress and identified four themes related to business practice. The four themes were (a) integration of employee engagement practices into culture and business processes, (b) providing managers with the job resources they need, (c) intentionality, transparency, and honesty in communications, and (d) relying on supportive supervisor behavior. Senior executives and HR leaders should examine the feasibility of proactively implementing similar strategies to mitigate employee work place stress, reduce disengagement, and improve employee engagement and commitment to the organization.

Diversity Initiative Schemas: Students’ Cognitive Representations Of Managing Diversity On College Campuses, Jeanetta D. Sims, Ashley Neese, Anna Henson, Atoya Sims, Treyce Glidden

Journal of the North American Management Society

Using schemas as a theoretical framework, this paper explores students’ cognitive representations of managing gender and racio-ethnic diversity initiatives on college and university campuses. Exploration of student schemas is necessary to inform higher education administrators of the existing expectations present among students since these expectations interplay with student responses and reactions to diversity management efforts. Using content analysis of students’ narratives, results concerning students’ cognitive representations are offered, and key managerial implications are shared for those in higher education leadership.

Managing Workforce Diversity In A New Age: The Challenges And Implications Of Ageism, David M. Savino Mar 2023

Managing Workforce Diversity In A New Age: The Challenges And Implications Of Ageism, David M. Savino

Journal of the North American Management Society

Managing workforce diversity is one of the major challenges facing human resource professionals today. Key among the many diversity challenges is the reality of dealing with a growing aging workplace population. As a result age discrimination and ageism has been a subtle and covert strategy of many organizations for years. The great recession brought the true realities of ageism to the surface in a distinct way with the number of reduction in force programs that seemed to wrongly target older workers disproportionately as evidenced by the number of age discrimination cases filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) during …

Gender Imbalance Improvements In Academia, Business, And Physical Education, Stephanie D. Trendowski, Thomas N. Trendowski, Joseph Trendowski Mar 2023

Gender Imbalance Improvements In Academia, Business, And Physical Education, Stephanie D. Trendowski, Thomas N. Trendowski, Joseph Trendowski

Journal of the North American Management Society

Traditionally, men have disproportionally held leadership positions in academia, business, and physical education. Fortunately, graduate programs in each field are providing women opportunities that were not apparent a few decades ago. We examine Business and Physical Education for transgressions of discrimination and provide evidence from personal interviews which indicate progress has been made for women in these fields. We provide several cross-disciplinary themes that transcend gender barriers to promote an equitable workforce in addition to field specific recommendations.

Introducing Students To International Business: The Fortune Global 500 Home Country Game, Michael E. Dobbs, Clint Relyea Mar 2023

Introducing Students To International Business: The Fortune Global 500 Home Country Game, Michael E. Dobbs, Clint Relyea

Journal of the North American Management Society

Students taking courses in international business or other courses with international modules within them are frequently less than excited to learn about the material, even though its importance to their future success may be growing quickly. To partially address this issue, we have developed a fun, interactive, competitive exercise based on the Fortune Global 500 to introduce international content to students. Students are asked to identify the home countries of twenty international businesses, some of whose products and services students have most likely used frequently. Participants realize more fully that whether they are cognizant of it or not, they engage …

The Effects Of Absenteeism On Organizations: A Longitudinal Study Spanning Eight Years, Lee L. Hisey, Jude Bumgardner Mar 2023

The Effects Of Absenteeism On Organizations: A Longitudinal Study Spanning Eight Years, Lee L. Hisey, Jude Bumgardner

Journal of the North American Management Society

This study spanned eight years—from 2009 to 2017—and examined the effects of absenteeism on employers. The sample was randomly selected from the Louisiana Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Employer database. Most of the employers indicated that absenteeism had no effect on their operations. However, results from one-sample t tests indicate that, as a result of absenteeism, there was a statistically significant increase in the following measures: customer complaints, level of rework, amount of time spent training, tardiness, number of team and employee efforts, work schedule alterations, and late deliveries to customers. One explanation for the discrepancy between the …

Motivational Theories Exemplified In School Of Rock, Mary Kovach Mar 2023

Motivational Theories Exemplified In School Of Rock, Mary Kovach

Journal of the North American Management Society

The primary purpose of this manuscript is to identify four contemporary motivational theories and demonstrate how each of these theories can be applied in current everyday situations. The intention of connecting these theories to relatable scenarios is based on a case study developed specifically for undergraduate business students. The majority of these students have not previously been exposed to these theories. The four motivational theories - including 1) Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, 2) David McClelland’s Needs Theories, 3) J. Stacy Adam’s Equity Theory and 4) Victor Vroom’s Expectancy Theory (Bolman & Deal, 2008, and Jones & George, 2015) - …

A Theoretical Model On The Effects Of Voluntary Turnover On Organizational Performance, Lee L. Hisey, Jude Bumgardner Mar 2023

A Theoretical Model On The Effects Of Voluntary Turnover On Organizational Performance, Lee L. Hisey, Jude Bumgardner

Journal of the North American Management Society

This paper presents a two-fold theoretical model to explain the effects of voluntary turnover on organizational performance. First, we use the Phase Component to determine whether an organization is over or under staffed, or whether an organization utilizes its human resources optimally. Next, we use the Performance Component to describe how antecedents, organizational performance, and organizational phase affect an organization’s ability to compete in the market place.

Building Consumer Competence And Trust: Hrd Professionals As Champions Of Change, Rubina F. Malik, Gouri Gupte, Brandy Edmondson, Vickie Cox Edmondson

Journal of the North American Management Society

Despite allocating significant institutional resources to establishing consumer trust, organizations often unintentionally fail to ensure that the social contract between the organization and its customers is upheld and that trust is the center of every transaction. This paper seeks to answer the questions of what role, if any, do organizations play in improving consumer competence and trust, and what substantive role can human resource development professionals play in that effort? Five consumer learning strategies using adult learning principles are set forth along with a decision-making framework that can support an organizational change in the power relationship between vulnerable consumers and …

The Impact Of Generational Perceptions Of Interactional Justice On Workplace Citizenship Behavior, Arlene Ramkissoon, Ronald M. Johnson Mar 2023

The Impact Of Generational Perceptions Of Interactional Justice On Workplace Citizenship Behavior, Arlene Ramkissoon, Ronald M. Johnson

Journal of the North American Management Society

This study is rooted in the concepts of social exchange theory and psychological contracts. It seeks to determine: (i) the effect of interactional justice on organizational citizenship behavior and (ii) if there is a generational impact on the effect of interactional justice on the dimensions of organizational citizenship behavior. The results show that interactional justice influences organizational behavior for the dimensions of altruism, conscientiousness, courtesy and civic virtue. There was also support for a generational relationship. Contrary to the hypothesized relationship, it was found that the connection between interactional justice and organizational citizenship behavior was stronger for members of Gen …

A Conceptual Model On The Relationship Between Human Resource Strategy And Turnover, Lee L. Hisey, Jude Bumgardner Mar 2023

A Conceptual Model On The Relationship Between Human Resource Strategy And Turnover, Lee L. Hisey, Jude Bumgardner

Journal of the North American Management Society

This paper proposes a conceptual model, explaining the effects of certain reactive or proactive human resource management strategies on an organization’s ability to acquire resources. The purpose of this model is to demonstrate how, in response to dysfunctional turnover, reactive human resource strategies moderate an organization’s ability to acquire resources, while proactive human resource strategies mediate the organization’s ability to acquire resources. The model proposes a moderating effect due to the ineffective strategies of an organization, such as increasing employee work effort in order to compensate for dysfunctional turnover. On the other hand, the model proposes that implementing proactive strategies, …

Faculty Perceptions On Professional And Student Development In Performance Evaluations, Gyongyi Konyu-Fogel, Valerie Wallingford, Carolyn Wiley, Ann Saurbier

Journal of the North American Management Society

In many higher educational institutions, one of the faculty requirements is to engage in continuous professional development. Faculty expectations may also include various student development activities. However, the impact of faculty and student development has not been emphasized in previous research, even though it has been noted to contribute to enhancing academic learning and performance. This study examines the perceptions of faculty at several Midwestern higher educational institutions by collecting data through surveys on the importance of faculty and student development in faculty evaluation decisions. The findings are used to make recommendations for administrators, faculty, and future research related to …
