At its best, a university is a collection of individuals ‐‐ students and faculty ‐‐ focused on learning and discovering new knowledge. For this goal to be realized, a critical element is having faculty members deeply engaged in such discovery within their disciplines. Scholarship, in the form of journal articles, book chapters, monographs and similar endeavors, creative activity which can take an even wider range of forms, and funded research which explores the boundaries of disciplines all contribute to such engagement. Through such participation, faculty members stay at the growing edges of their fields, and in so doing, they enrich …

Living the Mission: EIU NCA Self Study Report 2014
Eastern Illinois State Normal School was founded in 1895. It became, successively, Eastern Illinois State Teachers College (1921), Eastern Illinois State College (1947), and Eastern Illinois University (1957). The university was first accredited by the North Central Association in 1915; in 1920, it began offering the Bachelor of Education degree. In 1953, the university received accreditation as a master's degree-granting institution; in 1954, its mission was expanded to include Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degree programs. In 1965, it was granted preliminary accreditation for a six-year program leading to a Certificate of Advanced Study. At that time, Eastern …

Effects
of different rest intervals between antagonist paired sets on
repetition performance and muscle activation. J Strength
Cond Res 28(9): 2529–2535, 2014—Recent evidence
suggests that exercising the antagonist musculature acutely
enhances subsequent performance for the agonist musculature.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of
different rest intervals between sets for exercises that involve
antagonistic muscle groups, a technique referred to as
antagonist paired sets (APS). Fifteen recreationally trained
men were tested for knee extension (KE) exercise performance,
with or without previous knee flexion (KF) exercise
for the antagonist musculature. The following protocols were
performed in random …
Idiosyncratic Risk And Development In Developing Countries, Minh Dao
Idiosyncratic Risk And Development In Developing Countries, Minh Dao
Faculty Research and Creative Activity
This paper examines the impact of idiosyncratic risk management on economic development in developing countries. Based on data from the World Bank, we use a sample of twenty-seven developing economies and find that selected indicators related to risk management at the household level do have a statistically significant effect on economic development in these countries. Regression results show that almost four-fifths of cross-developing country variations in purchasing power parity per capita gross national income can be explained by its linear dependency on the percentage of the population aged over 25 who have completed the tertiary level of education, education quality …

The Effect Of Welfare Policies And Hardships On Participation Rates Among The Poor, Matthew W. Cain
The Effect Of Welfare Policies And Hardships On Participation Rates Among The Poor, Matthew W. Cain
Undergraduate Honors Theses
For several decades, a new political prospective has emerged in the Political Science literature - Policy Feedback Theory. Put simply, Policy Feedback Theory looks at the way public policy affects politics. Existing policies can define the political environment, shaping the capacities, interests, and beliefs of political elites and states, which in tum influence the next round of policy-making. However, does public policy only change the politics of elites and states? Can public policy also change the politics of mass publics? Recent Political Science researchers are now examining this question.
Even though much ground has been gained in examining this question, …
Gut Helminths Of Two Species Of Light Geese In Illinois, Evan C. Boone
Gut Helminths Of Two Species Of Light Geese In Illinois, Evan C. Boone
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Parasite burdens in lesser snow geese (Chen caerulescens caerulescens) and Ross’s geese (Chen rossii) migrating through central Illinois were determined and compared to documented parasite burdens on the breeding grounds in northern Canada and the wintering grounds in southern Texas. The digestive tracts of 48 snow geese (38 lesser snow geese and 10 Ross’s geese) were collected from 4 February to 3 March, 2012, in Raymond, Illinois. Eight helminth taxa (two species of Trematoda, four species of Nematoda, and two species of Cestoda) were recovered. Five of the eight helminth taxa were common in both species …

Graduate Alumnus: Outstanding Graduate Alumni Awards - Class Of 2014, Graduate School Of Eastern Illinois University
Graduate Alumnus
Since 1951 Eastern has offered advanced study
with master’s programming. Since that first
offering thousands of students have earned
graduate degrees, and EIU graduate alumni
have changed the world we live in. In 2005
EIU celebrated more than 50 years of graduate
education by honoring 50 graduate alumni
as Outstanding Graduate Alumni. That same
year the Graduate Alumni Advisory Board was
created and met for the first time. Since those
initial 50 honorees, the Graduate Alumni
Advisory Board, the Graduate School, and EIU’s
graduate programs have continued to honor
the achievements and accomplishments of our
graduate alumni every year.

2014 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creative Activity Documents
The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared obesity as a global epidemic, estimating 2.3 billion people will be overweight, and 700 million people will be obese by 2015. With the rise in obesity, weight-loss programs are one avenue that consumers are using to battle the epidemic. Approximately 2/3 of adults in the Western population are trying to lose weight or avoid weight gain.
The purpose of this paper is to review the current research of four major weight-loss programs: Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Nutrisystem, and Medifast, regarding fundamentals of the programs, the programs safety for consumers use, effectiveness of the …

Faculty Research & Creative Activity
This study was a replication of a previous study (in which) participants were given relaxation and deep breathing training to help manage test anxiety. The study examined the correlations between relaxation strategies, gum chewing and variables including socioeconomic status, class rank, GPA, and importance of going to college. Participants included 96 high school students (36 males, 60 females), preparing for the ACT (American College Testing). Results indicated that the relaxation intervention had a significant effect in reducing test anxiety.
