The Distribution Of Cadmium, Chromium And Lead In Crabs, Clams And Oysters From Calcasieu Estuary, Louisiana, Fritz Jaenike
The Distribution Of Cadmium, Chromium And Lead In Crabs, Clams And Oysters From Calcasieu Estuary, Louisiana, Fritz Jaenike
Masters Theses
In November 1978, specimens of oysters (Crassostrea virginica), clams (Rangia cuneata), crabs (Callinectes sapidus) and water and sediment samples were collected from Calcasieu Estuary, Louisiana. The concentrations of cadmium, chromium and lead were determined in the samples with an inductively coupled argon plasma direct reading emission spectrophotometer. Crab claw muscle, gill and carapace tissues were analyzed separately. Oysters and clams were separated into shell and whole soft tissue samples which were analyzed separately. The concentration order of the metals in crab carapace and in oyster shells was similar to that of the sediments, (Pb …
A Multimodal Approach For Counseling Rural Women: Models And Case Studies, Mary Vick Roth
A Multimodal Approach For Counseling Rural Women: Models And Case Studies, Mary Vick Roth
Masters Theses
THE PROBLEM
The purpose of this study was to develop a counseling model which would provide time-efficient and effective counseling services to meet the needs of rural women. Criteria were established for selected of a model and for evaluation of outcomes.
PROCEDURES
Research on previously-tested methods of counseling women as well as that on other counseling models was examined. Models were evaluated on the basis of established criteria. Discussion of use of the model selected was presented with three case studies illustrating its application. Evaluation of outcomes at the conclusion of therapy and on a follow-up basis concludes each case. …

Economic Feasibility Of Ethanol, Methanol And Alcohol-Gasoline Blends As Alternatives To Gasoline As Motor Fuels, Marjorie Diane Pettypool
Economic Feasibility Of Ethanol, Methanol And Alcohol-Gasoline Blends As Alternatives To Gasoline As Motor Fuels, Marjorie Diane Pettypool
Masters Theses
The major emphasis of this study is the economic feasibility of the use of alcohol-gasoline blends (gasohol) and alcohol fuels; but all major issues concerning the use of gasohol and alcohol fuels are explored. The specific objectives of the investigation include the determination of the specific performance properties of the fuels, their pollutant emissions (compared to gasoline), and their costs compared to gasoline.
While opponents to the use of alcohol fuels are more vocal than proponents, citing high cost and the lack of raw materials as objections, proponents believe new processes that can use any cellulose containing material as a …
Siderocapsa Major-- Fact Or Artifact?, Ray W. Swanson
Siderocapsa Major-- Fact Or Artifact?, Ray W. Swanson
Masters Theses
The validity of the genus Siderocapsa, a group of unicellular iron-depositing bacteria, has been a subject of debate for many years. Lack of photomicroscopic and cultural studies has kept this group in taxonomic obscurity. Bacteria were collected from the Campus pond, Eastern Illinois University, Charleston, Illinois, by a submerged slide/coverslip technique. These bacteria were identified as Siderocapsa major according to the description of Molisch (1909). Scanning electron microscopy of Siderocapsa major microcolonies has shown cells (0.5 by 1.15 μm), in a clear central well (2-6 μm), surrounded by an amorphous material which accumulates with the age of the colony. …
Bacteriophage Populations In Wastewater Effluent, Guy William Lawrence
Bacteriophage Populations In Wastewater Effluent, Guy William Lawrence
Masters Theses
Effluent samples were taken at various stages of sewage treatment at a local wastewater treatment plant. Primary, secondary, tertiary and post-chlorinated effluents were sampled. The agar overlay method was used to determine the numbers of plaque-forming bacteriophage particles on thirty-six species of enteric bacteria from the Eastern Illinois University stock culture collection. Twenty-three pure culture phage isolates were prepared from selected plaques and their host range specificity was determined. For every host organism tested, a fifty percent or greater reduction of bacteriophage was evident through the sewage treatment process. Results obtained from investigation of host range specificity indicate that potential …
Parent Visitation As A Public Relations Tool, Franklin Jack Kenny
Parent Visitation As A Public Relations Tool, Franklin Jack Kenny
Masters Theses
This paper is primarily a description of a daytime parent visitation program conducted at Stephen Decatur High School, Decatur, Illinois for parents of students new to the school. A traditional night time parent visitation program is described in less detail.
The daytime parent visitation was held over the lunch hour so parents could eat in the school cafeteria at the same time and the same food their children were eating.
The paper also details other activities of the program such as: a slide presentation, a tour of the building, an explanation of the course selection process and a question and …
Title I Is Working!, Marguerite Stapleton Lucas
Title I Is Working!, Marguerite Stapleton Lucas
Masters Theses
The field experience paper prepared on Title I on-site visitations, is divided into five sections. Section I is concerned with background information on Title I Elementary Secondary Education Act of 1965. This section contains the introduction, purpose of program evaluation and the functions of Title I.
It is important to note that Title I is an educational program designed to provide compensatory education for the disadvantaged. Title I money should be used to supplement and not supplant state and local funds.
Section II contains the log of activities of on-site monitoring visitations of Title I programs in the Illinois Local …
Analysis Of Lead In Freshwater Clams From The Embarrass River, Coles County, Illinois, Kwaku D. Nantwi
Analysis Of Lead In Freshwater Clams From The Embarrass River, Coles County, Illinois, Kwaku D. Nantwi
Masters Theses
Twenty-two freshwater clams of various genera were collected by hand from two sites on the Embarrass River located at 240 meters and 400 meters downstream from the dam at Lake Charleston and at depths of .4 and 2.5 meters. Ten grams of gill tissue from each clam was prepared by furnace ashing, dissolved in 30 ml. of acid mixture and analyzed for lead content using an atomic absorption spectrometer. The average lead concentration for the clams was 3.60 ppm, while that of the ambient water was 0.33 ppm indicating that these local bivalves show a lead biocentration of about ten …
